(1)   People crowd pagodas, recreational facilities

YANGON, 14 June - Famous pagodas and monasteries were crowded with monks and devout people and recreational facilities with holiday-makers today, Sunday.

Monks and people from far and near visited the Shwedagon Pagoda.

They performed meritorious deeds such as keeping sabbath, sitting in meditation, counting beads, offering flowers, water and scented water and donating cash.

Tourists also visited the pagoda. Similarly, monks and devout people thronged Kaba Aye Pagoda, Tooth Relic Pagoda (Yangon), Koehtatgyi Pagoda, Chaukhtatgyi Shwethalyaung Pagoda, Ngahtatgyi Pagoda, Thanlyin Kyaikkhauk Pagoda, Kyaikhmawwon Yele Pagoda and Shwephonepwint Pagoda.

The people, individually or in groups, and families visited the People's Square and People' s Park, and at Shweyinbyin Modern Amusement Park, they played modern games.

Thakayta Shukhintha Amusement Park, Hlawga Wildlife Park, Yangon Zoos, Maha Bandoola Park and Bogyoke Aung San Park were also packed with holiday-makers.

YANGON, 14 June - Minister for Labour Vice-Admiral Tin Aye arrived back here by air after attending the 86th session of the International Labour Organization Conference held in Geneva from 2 to 18 June.

He was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, department heads of the Ministry of Labour and officials.

The 12-member Myanmar delegation led by Vice-Admiral Tin Aye attended the 86th session of the ILO Conference.

(3)   Myanmar badminton team leaves to compete in Kuala Lumpur Asian Youth Championships

YANGON, 14 June - Myanmar badminton team left here by air for Malaysia today to take part in the Asian Youth Championships in Kuala Lumpur 15-21 June.

The team comprises Manager U Htet Paing (Yangon City Development Committee), Coach U Khin Maung Win (Ministry of Transport) and players Aung Bo Bo Zaw (Yangon City Development Committee), Zaw Maung Maung Soe (Ministry of Transport), Win Ko Tun (Ministry of Transport) and Nowin Ko (Mandalay City Development Committee).

They were seen off at the Yangon International Airport by officials of Myanmar Badminton Federation and their families.

(4)   Trainees of Marine Course for New Generation (Mandalay Camp) visit Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 14 June - Altogether 101 trainees of Tatmadaw (Navy) Marine Course for New Generation (Mandalay Camp) jointly conducted by the Union Solidarity and Development Association and Office of Commander-in-Chief (Navy), together with supervisor Division EC Member U Kyaw and instructors arrived at Yangon Central Railway Station this morning.

They were welcomed by Vice-Chairman of Central Supervisory Committee for Marine Courses for New Generation Captain Tha San, General Staff Officer (Grade I) (Operation) of Office of Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Commander Nyan Tun, General Staff Officer (Grade I) (Operation and Training) Commander Hla Kyi, officials and Yangon Division, District and Township USDA members.

The trainees had lunch at No.1 Transit Centre and they later visited the Shwedagon Pagoda where they were welcomed by officials of Board of Trustees and U Thein Zaw explained the history of the pagoda.

Division USDA executive U Kyaw and members presented K 5,000 for the pagoda to U Thein Zaw.

They also visited Buddhology Museum and Yangon Zoological Gardens.

(5)   Written exam for selection of outstanding police held

YANGON, 14 June - Written examination for selection of outstanding police at divisional level for 1998 was held at the Office of Yangon Division Police Commander this morning.

Altogether 52 members of police force took the examination.

On behalf of Yangon Division Police Commander Police Col Tin Win, Deputy Police Commander Police Lt-Col Kyaw Myint Cho and officials supervised the examination.

(6)   Minister meets staff of MR, IWT

YANGON, 14 June - Chairman of Supervisory Committee for Myanma Railways and Inland Water Transport Services to Operate Full Capacity Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe and Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint arrived at Gawwain Port in Mandalay on 13 June.

The minister was welcomed by Managing Director of Inland Water Transport U Tun Aung Myint and officials. The minister and party inspected condition of passengers and cargo transport on board the Pyigyidagun-3 bound for Bhamo.  The minister met passengers on board. He went to Yadanabon Shipyards and met superintending engineer and officials of IWT.  The minister spoke of committee's efforts for convenience of passengers and speedy services of Myanma Railways and IWT, discharging duties and earning income for the State.

He inspected hovercraft transport service, functions of MR at Myohaung Stadon in cooperation with San Thawda Co and MFF Co and warehouses.

(7)   Commander attends monsoon collective tree-planting ceremony

YANGON, 14 June - Monsoon collective tree-planting ceremony was held in Dhammayon of Pathein University in Ayeyawady Division yesterday morning.

Present were Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Brig-Gen Thura Shwe Man, Deputy Commander Col Tint Swe, Tatmadaw officers, commandants of Pathein Station, division, district and township level departmental officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross Society and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, students and local residents totalling 2,000. Director-General of Forestry Department U Myint Sein spoke on the occasion. Then, the Commander and officials planted the trees in the campus of Pathein University.

The Commander inspected. the tree-planting and cordially greeted the volunteers.

The Commander gave instructions to the officials.

(8)   Repaved Kiu Ywam street out back into service in MyitKyina

YANGON, 14 June - Kiu Ywam Street repaved on self-reliance was put back into service in Adin Village in Myitkyina Township on 9 June morning.

Present were Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tin Soe, Tatmadaw officers, state, district and township level departmental officials, street repaving committee members, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and social welfare association, ward elders, local residents and guests totalling over 12,000.

Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win delivered an opening address.

Township executive officer of Myintkyina Township Development Committee Captain Myo San reported on efforts for repaving the street and Chairman of Tatkon Village Peace and Development Council U Hsam Naw thanked the officials.

Director of Kachin State Development Affairs Department U Myint Toe presented the commemorative pennants to Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tin Soe.

U Hsam Naw and Engineer U John Aung of Myitkyina Township DAD formally opened the street.

The Commander and officials inspected the street and cordially greeted the local residents.

(9)   Construction of roads inspected in Insein

YANGON, 14 June - Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, accompanied by Deputy Head of Engineering Department (Roads/Bridges) U Kyaw Naing and officials, inspected construction of short cut road linking Mindhamma Road and Pyay Road, Aung Theikdi link road Insein Road and Mindhamma Road, extension of East Gyogon Road and central highway this morning.

Engineers in-charge reported on progress of work. Col Maung Pa gave instructions on completion of roads as scheduled in accord with the standards, proper drainage and making efforts for convenience of the public.
