(1)   ASEAN Steering Committee holds Meeting No.2/98

YANGON, 13 June - The ASEAN Steering Committee held its Meeting No.2/98 at the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) this afternoon, attended by Chairman of the Steering Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Judge Advocate-General Maj-Gen Than Oo, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departmental heads.

Secretary of the Steering Committee Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe acted as master of ceremonies.

First, Minister U Ohn Gyaw spoke about the meetings attended by delegations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in preparation for the Sixth ASEAN Summit and the 31st ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting.

Afterwards, Minister Brig-Gen Abel presented a general review of the ASEAN economic meetings.

Discussions focused on prompt exchange of data on seismic surveys for earthquakes of high intensity among ASEAN members, participation of Myanmar in the seismic network project and organizing the 19th Meeting of ASEAN Industrial Cooperation Work Group, among others.

Deputy Minister U Nyunt Swe then explained payment of the ASEAN membership contributing, financial accounts on implementation of ASEAN tasks and formation of the Leading Committee for BIMST-EC.

The ministers, the deputy ministers and departmental heads discussed the matters related to the respective delegations' attendance of ASEAN meetings and urgent tasks.

After coordinating the tasks, the Secretary-1 gave suggestions on sending of delegations to the meetings that need be attended due to technical requirement, the need for the ministries to constantly assess the currency crisis in other ASEAN members and provide all-out assistance in the task for boosting agricultural production.

(2)   Hline Basic Education Primary Schools 2 and 26 get new buildings

YANGON, 13 June - Ceremonies to open new school buildings of Basic Education Primary School Nos.2 and 26 in Hline Township and to hand over new school buildings to Ministry of Education were held at respective places this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present also were Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung,

Minister for Education U Than Aung, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Ministers for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, heads of department, Yangon District and Hline Township Peace and Development Councils, executives and members of Hline Township Union Solidarity and Development Association, EC members of Parent-Teacher Association, members of Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Red Cross and Fire Brigade, guests, teachers and pupils.

A ceremony to open new school building of Basic Education Primary School No.2 in Hline Township, donated by U Tun Naing Aye-Dr Yin Yin Win and family, was held at the school on Yangon-Insein Road in No 9 Ward, Hline Township at 8:30 am today.

Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister U Than Aung and well-wisher U Tun Naing Aye formally opened the new building.

Then, a ceremony to hand over new building to Ministry of Education was held at the new school building.

Staff Officer of Myanma Radio and TV Daw Than Than Win explained about the construction of new building.

U Tun Naing Aye presented related documents of the new building to Director- General of Basic Education Department U Bo Win.

Director-General of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development U Arnt Kyaw presented documents related to land grant to U Bo Win.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave instructions to Headmistress Daw Tha Nu Aye and teachers on academic matters. The Secretary-l, the ministers, the Vice-Mayor, the deputy ministers and party inspected new school building and attended to their needs.

The five-storey new school building is 65 feet long and 25 feet wide.  It has five classrooms and other rooms constructed at a cost of K 15 million.

It emerged in accord with the policy of Myanmar Education Committee. A similar ceremony was held at No.26 BEPS at Mya Kantha Housing Project in Ward 5, Hline Township, at 9:45 am today.

Present were Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, the ministers, the mayor, the deputy ministers, department heads, officials, guests, members of USDA, teachers and school children.

Maj-Gen Saw Tun, U Than Aung and Chairman of Olympic Co Ltd U Aik Tun formally opened the new building of No.26 Basic Education Primary School.

Then, a ceremony to hand over the new school building to the Ministry of Education was held in the new building.

U Aik Tun explained the purpose of donation of the new school building.

U Aik Tun handed over documents related to the new school building to Director-General of Basic Education Department U Bo Win.

Director-General of the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development U Arnt Kyaw handed documents related to landholding. grant to U Bo Win.

Headmaster U Moe Myint accepted two computers, one air-conditioner and school furniture and stationery worth 1.5 million kyats donated by U Aik Tun and K 50,000 by U Aung Lin and Daw Khin Khin family of 156, Bo Ywe Street, Latha Township.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met the headmaster and teachers, and discussed academic matters.

Later, the Secretary-l, the ministers, the mayor, the deputy ministers, department heads and officials inspected the new building.

Olympic Company Ltd donated the building of No.26 BEPS of Hline Township, 283 feet long and 30 feet wide, built at a cost of over 50 million kyats on a plot of 1.13 acres.  The building is a reinforced concrete one including 14 classrooms, one office room, one recreation room for teachers and one computer room.

In meeting heads of schools and teachers, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said new school buildings, where school children can pursue their education in a peaceful atmosphere, have emerged because of the goodwill of the well-wishers, and added that is to say, favourable conditions have emerged, which will contribute much towards better education of the school children.

He noted teachers are responsible for promoting the all-round development of the children, and called upon them to make continuous assessment of individual child and to broaden the horizons of the children in accord with the level of their intellectual abilities.

(3)   Secretary-1 receives ICRC official

YANGON, 13 June - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Representative of International Committee of the Red Cross Mr Jean Michael Monod at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence this evening.

Present together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director- General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(4)   Extension, upgrading of phone lines stressed

YANGON, 13 June - A ceremony to share merits for inauguration of three-storey Ottama Purisadipini building donated by the State Peace and Development Council for Naga Hlainggu Kalaywa Tawya Sarthintaik was held at the new building of the Sarthintaik in Mayangon Township this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe.

The ceremony was attended by Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Myingyan Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita and member Sayadaws, Presiding Sayadaw of Naga Hlainggu Kalaywa Tawya Sarthintaik Dwipitakadhara Agga Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Jagarabhivamsa, members of the Sangha and samaneras, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt and wife, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and wife, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, senior officers of the Ministry of Defence, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, invited guests and well-wishers.

(5)   Myanmar delegation discusses promotion of bilateral trade in Malaysia

YANGON, 13 June - A Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than left here for Malaysia on 7 June.

On arrival at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, Malaysia, they were welcomed by Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of External Trade' and Industry of Malaysia Hon Ahmad Kamaruzaman Mohamad Baria, Myanmar Ambassador to Malaysia U Saw Tun and party.

On 8 June morning, the minister and party visited Economic Planning Unit (E.P.U.) under the Office of the Prime Minister.

They heard a report on laying down and implementation of plans for economic development presented by Secretary Ms Zaharaton Raja Zainal Abidui, and had discussions.

Later, the minister and party went to Petronas.

They met officials led by the senior vice-president, and had discussions.

Later, they met the president of Petronas.

In the afternoon, the minister and party went to Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) under the Ministry of External Trade and Industry of Malaysia.

They heard a report on the corporation.

The minister explained matters related to economic prospects in Myanmar.

Then, the minister and party attended a seminar on trade and investment opportunities in Myanmar sponsored by National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM) and Malaysia South South Association (MASSA) at the Istana Hotel.

The seminar was attended by over 40 merchants from Malaysia.

At the seminar, Secretary of MASSA Dato Y Bmg Datuk T Y Lee extended greetings.

The minister explained matters related to trade and investment opportunities in Myanmar.

Then, the minister and party and merchants had discussions.

On 9 June, Myanmar delegation led by the minister called on Minister for Agriculture Hon Datuk Amer Dr Hj Sulaiman Hj Daud.  They discussed matters of mutual interest.

In the afternoon, the minister and party visited the rice mill under the Bernas Organization in Selangor State.

Later, the Myanmar delegation called on Minister for External Trade and Industry Hon Dato Seri Rafidah Aziz.

Myanmar delegation and Malaysia group led by ministers held discussions.

Then, they signed an agreement on bilateral trade between the two countries.

Minister Maj-Gen Kyaw Than replied to queries raised by media persons.

On 10 June morning, the minister and party visited Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia (PORIM) and Malaysia Industrial Development Authority (MIDA).

In the afternoon, they studied production of Protom car.

On 11 June morning, Myanmar delegation went to Penang by air, where they studied port services at Penang Port Authority.

In the afternoon, the minister and party called on Chief Minister of Penang State Hon Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.

Afterwards, the minister replied to queries raised by journalists.

In the evening, Myanmar delegation visited Myanmar monastery in Penang and presented offertories.

On 12 June morning, Myanmar delegation left for Bangkok.

In Bangkok, they studied the factory and a 50-ton rice mill of Rice Engineering Supply Co Ltd.

Myanmar delegation arrived back here yesterday evening.

(6)   Tree-planting ceremony held in Insein

YANGON, 13 June - A tree-planting ceremony was held at the corner of Mingyi Street and the Main Road in Insein Township this morning.

Present were Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor of Yangon U Ko Lay, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Joint Secretary U Kyi Win and committee members, heads and employees of departments under YCDC, employees and families of Insein Township Development Committee exceeding 650.

The mayor, the vice mayor, the YCDC joint secretary and officials planted trees at the designated places.

Over 3,000 trees were planted along the Main Road between Mingyi Street and West Gyogon Street and over 1,200 trees along the Main Road between Parami and Nanattaw.

Then, Chairman of YCDC Mayor U Ko Lay gave instructions on making the lake between the Main Road and Insein Locomotive Shed pleasant and beautiful.

(7)   Deputy Premier leaves to attend ASEAN Joint Investment Promotion Event

YANGON, 13 June - Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice Admiral Maung Maung Khin with Secretary of MIC and Minister at the Office of State Peace and Development Council Chairman Brig-Gen Maung .Maung and Joint-Secretary of MIC U Maung Maung Yi as members left here by air this evening for Japan to attend ASEAN Joint Investment Promotion Event to be held in Tokyo.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun, officials of MIC and Japanese Embassy and their relatives.

(8)   Minister for Mines inspects Ywama Steel Mill

YANGON, 13 June - Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint inspected Ywama Steel Mill yesterday.

The minister was welcomed by acting Director-General of No.3 Mining Enterprise U San Tun, Manager U Nay Aung and officials.

The minister inspected machines, production of wire nails and security doors.

He gave instructions on production of ferro-manganese at PyinOoLwin No.1 Iron and Steel Plant, continued production for earning income before leasing to private entrepreneurs, welfare and security matters.

(9)   Cash donations for Second Conference of MWJA

YANGON, 13 June - Well-wishers U Kyaw Myint, Daw Naing Naing (Daw Khin Htay Naing) and Daw Tin Tin Oo of Thabawathatti Medical Hall and Thabawa Yadana Uyin today presented K 55,555 and 100 packets of traditional medicine, Muslim Affairs Organization (Yangon Division) K 1,000 and Executive Editor U Thaung Tin (Shwemyeik Thaung Tin) of Pyithaya magazine K 2,000 for the Second Conference of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association.

Chairman of MWJA U Myo Thant (Maung Hsu Shin) and Vice-Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung) and Joint Secretary Daw Mya Mya Than (Ma Hnin Phwe) accepted the donations.
