(1) Secretary-l inspects renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda, construction of Women's Home
YANGON 3 April - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council this morning inspected at tend renovation of the Shwedagon pagoda and Construction of Women's Home and gave instructions.
Accompanied by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin and officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, Patron of Work Committee for All-round Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt arrived at the Southern Stairway of the Shwedagon Pagoda at 9.15 am.
They were welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, heads of department and members of the Board of Trustees.
The Secretary-1 inspected finishing touches of Myanma handicrafts at Southern Stairway. He proceeded to the pagoda platform where he inspected renovation of Southern Stairway Areyonkhan Tazaung, Gawnagamana Myatswaphaya Gandakuditaiks Sasanika buildings, Shwedagon Pagoda Museum, Pitakataik, arrangements for renovation of Mawguntaik, renovation of the lift at the Northern Stairway, renovation and construction of Northern Stairway and fencing the Thwehsaykan.
The Secretary-1 and party went to Women's Home on Thanlwin Street in Kamayut Township where they were welcomed by Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs. Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, heads of department, Director-General of Social Welfare Department Col Sit Myaing, Administrator of the home and officials.
Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone briefed the Secretary-1 on construction of briefing room, three-storey building, expansion of weaving room, sanitation and arrangements for progress of the Women's Home.
Officials of the Public Works briefed the Secretary-1 on architectural design of the buildings and progress of work.
The Secretary-l attended to the needs and inspected construction of water storage tank, expansion of weaving room, weaving work, jewellery work and construction of three-storey hostel.

(2) Dinner to honour outstanding Red Cross youths at get-together for 1998
YANGON, 3 April - Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the dinner to mark camp-folding of outstanding Red Cross youths get-together for 1998 at Defence Services Orthopaedic Hospital (500-bed) in Mingaladon at 6.30 pm today.
Present also were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister at the Office of the Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein. Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, senior Tatmadaw officers, officials of the Office of State Peace and Development Council, heads of department, President of Myanmar Red Cross Society Dr Hla Bu and EC members, Central Council members, members of the Get-together Organizing Committee, outstanding Red Cross youths and guests.
MRCS President Dr Hla Bu delivered the concluding address.
Then, on behalf of the outstanding Red Cross youths, Ma Nyein Yadana Moe of Kyaikhto Township in Mon State expressed words of thanks.
Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, ministers and guests had dinner together with outstanding Red Cross youths.

(3) Tipitakadhara Sayadaw's Silver Jubilee to be celebrated
YANGON, 3 May - Well-wishers today donated K 6.3 million for holding the ceremony to mark the Silver Jubilee of Tipitakadhara Sayadaw Ashin Sumangala Lankara's obtaining Tipitakadhara Tipitaka Kovida title.
The Sayadaw, who is Presiding Sayadaw of Mayangon Township Tipitaka Maha Gandhayon Kyaungtaik, received Tipitakadhara Tipitaka Kovida title in 1335 ME and the ceremony to mark the Silver Jubilee of his receiving the title will be held at Tipitaka Maha Gandhayon Kyaungtaik on the 15th Waxing of Kason 1360 ME, 10 May 1998.

(4) Sacred umbrellas hoisted atop Shwedagon Northern Stairway pyatthat stupas
YANGON, 3 May - A Ceremony to hoist the sacred umbrellas atop the stupas on the pyatthat of the Northern Stairway of the Shwedagon Pagoda- was held there this morning.
Ten Ovadacariya Sayadaws of the Shwedagon Pagoda recited parittas and shared merits.
At the auspicious time, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Commander of Yangon Commander Col Hsa Hsint, members of the Board of Trustees and religious associations hoisted the sacred umbrellas atop the two stupas on the pyatthat.

(5) Minister oversees shifting of 66 KV power line
YANGON, 3 May - Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, accompanied by Chief Engineer of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise U Yan Naing and officials, inspected removal of Pylon No 42 of Seinpanmyaing 66 KV power line which is in the way of the approach road of Thingangyun Bridge across Ngamoeyeik Creek, erecting of two new pylons and shifting of 66 KV power line in Thakayta this morning.
Service personnel of MEPE have been carrying out these tasks since 2 May.

(6) Minister visits Myanma Gems Museum
YANGON, 3 May - Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, together with Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo, visited Myanma Gems Museum this morning.
The minister inspected salesrooms and the Emporium Hall.
He gave instructions on making necessary arrangements for showrooms which can attract the attention and interest of visitors, selling genuine jewellery, creating attractive designs, making the museum, the Emporium Hall and compound beautiful and pleasant and taking systematic security measures.

(7) Myanmar Labour delegation arrives back from Vietnam
YANGON, 3 April - Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Labour Vice-Admiral Tin Aye arrived back here by air yesterday evening form Vietnam after attending the 12th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting from 22 to 30 April in Hanoi.
The Minister was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, departmental officials of the ministry and officials of Vietnamese Embassy.
Director-General of Labour Department U Tun Shwe, Deputy Director-General of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration Dr Tun Shin, Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development and PSO to the Minister Capt Nay Tun also arrived back with the minister.

(8) Minister for Transport tours Kawthoung, Myeik Dawei
YANGON, 3 May - Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, accompanied by Director-General of Department of Civil Aviation U Win Maung and officials, left for Kawthoung by air and arrived there at 8.30 am yesterday.
He was welcomed there by Officiating Tactical Operations Commander Lt-Col Zaw Min, Chairman of District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Myint and departmental personnel.
Later in the airport lounge, Mr Vikrom Aisiri of VES Group Co Ltd and Director U San Maung of Airport Construction Project briefed him on the project.
The minister gave suggestions on Myanmar artifacts to be installed at the airport building, preparations to be made for inauguration ceremony of the airport 'building, construction of the apron to be completed before the rainy season and other work.
Later, the minister inspected expansion of the runway and gave instructions on work.
He proceeded to Tawwin Wharf Project of Myanma Port Authority.
Officials presented reports to him on progress of work in construction of the wharf.
He then viewed mooring of the boats at the wharf, loading and unloading of goods and warehouses.
The minister and party later inspected Myoma Wharf and Bayintnaung Wharf of MPA, and transport of passengers and goods and earnings at Myanma Five Star Line Office.
They flew to Myeik in the afternoon.
They were welcomed there by Tactical Operations Commander Col Tin Latt, Chairman of Myeik District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Htay and departmental personnel.
At the airport, they inspected the construction for expansion of the runway.
They proceeded to Dawei where they were welcomed by Tactical Operations Commander Col Than Win, Chairman of District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Myint and departmental personnel.
The minister left instructions on expansion of the runway.

(9) Outstanding Red Cross youths visit Buddha's Tooth Relic Pagoda
YANGON, 3 May - Under the final day programme of outstanding Red Cross youths get-together for 1998, outstanding Red Cross youths led by Camp Manager U Hla Myint visited Buddha's Tooth Relic Pagoda in Mayagon Township this morning.
They were welcomed there by members of Board of Trustees who briefed them on history of the pagoda.
.Then, they donated cash over K 10,000 to members of Board of Trustees for the pagoda fund and carried out sanitation work at the pagoda.
The outstanding Red Cross youths went to Shukhintha Amusement Park where officer in-charge Capt Min Aung extended greetings.
Camp Manager U Hla Myint presented commemorative pennant to Capt Min Aung.
Then, the delegation visited the amusement park and left.

(10) Site chosen for museum marking eradication of narcotic drugs
YANGON, 3 May - The site for construction of a museum to mark the eradication of narcotic drugs was chosen at the junction of Hanthawady Road and Kyundaw Road in Kamayut Township this morning.
Present were Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Director-General of Myanma Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, directors-general of the departments under the Ministry of Home Affairs, senior police officers and officials of Topline Technics Ltd.
Sayadaws and members of the Sangha led by Principal Sayadaw of Yangon Division Abbot Training School Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kovida recited scriptures.
The Principal Sayadaw administered the Five Precepts and delivered a sermon.
Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and officials donated K 48,000 and offerings for Yangon Division Abbot Training School.
Merits gained were then shared.
