(1)   Myanmar youths to take part more in international, ASEAN competitions Eight prize winners show Myanmar youths' talent equal to that of ASEAN counterparts

YANGON, 30 Apr - Prize winners in ASEAN 30th Founding Anniversary commemorative essay, poster and photo contests were honoured at Yangon University Diamond Jubilee Hall today with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The contests were sponsored by ASEAN Secretary-General's Office in Jakarta in cooperation with Secretariats of member nations.

Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt expressed pleasure to honour those to whom honour is due.

The title of essay contest was "My Vision of ASEAN in the year 2020", colour poster contest "A United and Cohesive ASEAN" and colour photo contest "Towards a Dynamic Progressive, Cohesive ASEAN", he said.

University students of ASEAN nations competed in the essay contest, students of ASEAN nations aged 13 to 17 in colour poster contest and citizens of ASEAN nations in photo contest, he said.

Two-hundred-twenty-one contestants of nine ASEAN nations took part in essay contest, 512 in poster contest and 873 in photo contest, he recounted.

Entries to the three contests were scrutinized by judges at a meeting held in the General-Secretary's Office on 20 and 21 January 1998, he recalled.

Myanmar student Maung Aung Gyi of Final Part I, Institute of Medicine-1 (Yangon), won first prize in essay contest, a Singaporean second and a
Filipino third, he said.

In poster contest, a participant from the Philippines was first, Maung Aye Maung Maung, a tenth standard student of Basic Education High School l, Kyauktan Township, Myanmar, second a contestant of Malaysia third and Myanmars Maung Nyein Chan Aung of BEHS 1, Kyauktan, Maung Shu Maung of BEHS 3, Tamway Township, Maung Zaw Min Thein of BEHS l, Bahan Township, Maung Chit Ko Ko of BEHS 1, Thingangyun Township, and Ma Aye Myat Mon of BEHS 1, Dagon Township, also won special prices, he added.

There was no first prize winner in photo contest, he said. An Indonesian won second prize in the contest, a Malaysian third and Myanmar NyaungU Than Htay special prize, he added.

Maung Aung Gyi and Maung Aye Maung Maung attended the prize giving ceremony which was held in the Secretary-General's Office in Jakarta on 27 February 1998, he said. Maung Aung Gyi was presented $ 5,000 and Maung Aye Maung Maung $ 1,500, he added.

NyaungU Than Htay won $ 500 for his special award and $ 250 each was presented to Maung Nyein Chan Aung, Maung Shu Maung, Maung Zaw Min Thein, Maung Chit Ko Ko and Ma Aye Myat Mon, he said.

Their victory at the contest was the pride of the nation, proving Myanmar youths' talent is not less than their counterparts, he declared.  Their efforts have uplifted the nation's dignity, showing the high quality of Myanmar youths, he added.

The prize winners totaling eight will be honoured at this ceremony, he said, urging student youths to participate more in international and ASEAN competitions.

Their prize-winning works will be displayed at "Myanmar and the ASEAN" Exhibition on the second floor of Yangon University Diamond Jubilee Hall for a week beginning today, he noted.

In conclusion, he urged the entire Myanmar youths to continue to take part in international and ASEAN competitions actively, to show that the ability of Myanmar youths is equal to international standard and to participate in the respective sectors in human resources and nation-building endeavours.

The Secretary-1 presented certificates of honour and cash awards to them.

Maung Aung Gyi, on behalf of all prize-winners, thanked the nation.  Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board U Maung Maung Gyi, Deputy Ministers for Education Dr Than Nyunt and Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, ASEAN diplomats, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments, officials of Higher Education Department and Basic Education Department, technicians, Patron of Myanmar Correspondents Club U Sein Win and members, education officers, school heads and families of the prize-winners were also present.

Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party had a souvenir photo taken together with the prize winners.

The Secretary-l cordially greeted them.

Minister U Than Aung formally opened "Myanmar and the ASEAN" Exhibition at the hall.

They visited the exhibition, displaying documentaries on Head of State Senior General Than Shwe's goodwill visits to ASEAN nation posters and documentaries on ASEAN and prize-winning works of Myanmar youths at ASEAN 30th Founding Anniversary commemorative essay, poster and photo contests.

(2)   Secretary-1 receives Minister for Home Affairs Maj-Gen Asang Laoly of Laos

YANGON, 30 Apr - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received goodwill delegation led by Minister for Home Affairs Maj-Gen Asang Laoly of Laos at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4.30 pm today.

Present also were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig Gen Thura Myint Maung and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

The guests were accompanied by Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham.

(3)   Cash donated for development of Myanmar Women's Development Association (Wingaba)

YANGON, 1 May - The third cash donation ceremony for the development of Myanmar Women Development Association (Wingaba) was held at the association on Wingaba Street in Bahan Township this evening, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Present also were Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the office of the Prime Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint and departmental officials, well-wishers, Chair person of the Association Daw Aye Aye Soe and EC members and members.

(4)   Pre-Primary school of Mingaladon Air Base opened

YANGON, 30 Apr - A ceremony to open pre-primary school of Maternal and Child Welfare Association branch of Mingaladon Air Base to mark Mothers and Children's Day, was held-the hall of Mingaladon Air Base at 9 am today.

Present also were Vice Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (Central) Dr Khin Win Shwe, Daw Khin Swe Nyunt, wife of Commander-in-Chief (Air), senior officers of Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Air) and their wives and well-wishers.

Nine well-wishers donated K 330,050.

Daw Khin Swe Nyunt and Daw Nyunt Nyunt Yi, wife of Mingaladon Air Base Commander, Accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the donors.

Then, Dr Khin Win Shwe formally opened the pre-primary school.

(5)   Lao Minister for Home Affairs meets Ministers, Mayor

YANGON, 30 Apr - Minister for Home Affairs Maj-Gen Asang Laoly of Laos and goodwill delegation, currently here at the invitation of Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, met Minister U Ohn Gyaw, Minister Col Thein Nyunt and Mayor U Ko Lay today separately.

Lao Minister for Home Affairs Maj-Gen Asang Laoly and party called on Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw at his office at 1.15 pm today.

(6)   Minister for NPED tours Bago, Magway Divisions

YANGON, 30 Apr - Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, together with Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Zaw Tun and officials, inspected offices under the ministry in Bago and Magway Divisions from 25 to 29 April.

He also attended USDA membership application submitting ceremonies held in Pantaw Village of Mindon Township, Yaybok Village of Minbu (Saku) Township, Pwintbyu, Salin, Seikpyu, Ywashay Village of Myaing Township, Inbin Village and Chaukkan Village-tract of Pakokku Township and Aunglan Township.

The minister accepted a total of 41,362 applications from the respective villages and towns.

He also inspected Planning Department offices of Minbu District, Pakokku District, Magway Division and Magway District and gave instructions on departmental work.

The minister attended the opening ceremony of Shinbin Laymyethna Phayagyi Road built by USDA in Tanyaung Village, Salin Township.

On 28 April, together with the Commander of No 101 LID and officials, the minister and party attended the opening ceremony of 5570-foot Kuthinayon Road in Pakokku. The minister also observed one-month Basic Spoken English Course being conducted at Pakokku Township Basic Middle School No 3.

On 29 April, he observed Basic Aviation Course No 3 for New Generation being conducted at Magway Township Basic Education High School No 2.

The five-week course was opened on 27 April. A total of 70 trainees are attending it.

The minister also attended the opening ceremony of new office building of Aunglan Township USDA and formally opened it.

(7)   Benefit-sharing agreement on purchasing tin and tungsten singed

YANGON, 30 Apr - A benefit-sharing agreement on purchasing tin and tungsten was signed by Taninthayi Division Mineral Production and Trading Co Ltd and No 2 Mining Enterprise at the office of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council on 28 April.

Present were Chairman of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Director-General of Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration Department U Soe Myint, Chairman of Board of Directors of Taninthayi Division Mineral Production and Trading Co Ltd U Kyi Sein and officials.

Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Deputy Minister U Myint Thein spoke on the occasion. U Kyi Sein and Managing Director U Soe Myint signed the agreement.

(8)   PRC-aided tractors for paddy cultivation

YANGON 30 Apr - Officials of Agricultural Mechanization Department are making arrangements to transport Chinese aided tractors and parts worth ten million yuan to monsoon paddy cultivation areas in States and Divisions.

Purchased from China Tianjing International Economic and Technical Cooperation Corporation with assistance provided by People's Republic of China, the gifts including 85 units of 80-horse-power tractors and parts have been checked by experts of PRC and. AMD for systematic assembling.

The machines were conveyed from Yangon port to AMD warehouses in KyaikKaloh on 29 April.
