(1) Secretary-1 oversees Bo Myat Tun Bridge Project, regional development undertakings

YANGON, 5 Apr - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected construction of Bo Myat Tun Bridge and regional development undertakings in Nyaungdon this morning.

Accompanied by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Ministers for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung and U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig- Gen Aye Myint Kyu, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, department heads and officials, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt arrived at Yadana Eya Hall of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation in Hsarmalauk Village, Nyaungdon Township.

They were welcomed there by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander Brig-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, division, district and township authorities, departmental personnel and officials.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt was briefed by Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, U Ohn Myint and officials on reclamation of wetlands in Nyaungdonkyun, Maubin District, Ayeyawady Division, and cultivation of crops including paddy, beans and pulses and jute.

The Secretary-1 gave instruction.

Later, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the land reclaimed according to the wetlands reclamation pilot project in Nyaungdon and cultivation of crops.

Afterwards, they inspected Asiatha prawn breeding undertaking in Hsarmalauk Village.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party went to Bo Myat Tun Bridge Project in Nyaungdon.

They were welcomed there by Superintending Engineer (Project) of Public Works U Pe Than and service personnel.

U Pe Than reported on salient points of the project, progress of work in implementation of the project and requirements.

Later, the Secretary-l and party inspected construction work.

Bo Myat Tun Bridge with reinforced concrete piers and steel beams links Thaungdan Village on the eastern bank of Ayeyawady River with the place near Kyeinbinhse Village on the western bank of Ayeyawady River in Nyaungdon Township, Ayeyawady Division.

The total length of the bridge is 8,544 feet, with the 6,164-feet-long main bridge and 2,380-feet-long approach structures, 28-feet-wide motor-way and two five-feet-wide pedestrian lanes.

The safe passage under the bridge is 360 feet wide, clearance is 57 feet high and the bridge can bear 60-ton loads.

Construction of the bridge began on 1 February 1996, and efforts are being made to complete construction work as scheduled.

The bridge on Yangon-Pathein Highway links Yangon with Ayeyawady Division and Rakhine State, and will contribute a lot to economic development of the State.

The Ayeyawady River is a natural barrier against sending agricultural produce from the delta region to Yangon. Bo Myat Tun Bridge is thus built. On completion of the bridge, agricultural produce can be sent from the delta region to Yangon within a short time.

After that, the Secretary-1 and party went to Ponnamaramazay Kyaungtaik in Nyaungdon.

They paid obeisance and presented offertories to Sayadaws and members of the Sangha led by Joint Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Osadhabhivamsa.

Then, they inspected preventive measures being taken against erosion of the river bank in Nyaungdon.

Director-General of Waterways Department U Pe Than and Assistant Director of Development Affairs Department U Than Oo explained measures taken against the danger of erosion- of the river bank.

Later, the Secretary-1 and party inspected Panhlaing Sluicegate.

(2) 30-mile Lashio-Kontha section of Mandalay-Lashio-Muse Union Highway commissioned

YANGON, 5 Apr - The 30-mile Lashio-Kontha section of Mandalay-Lashio-Muse Union Highway undertaken by Diamond Palace Co Ltd was commissioned yesterday morning.

Present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command Brig-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Deputy Commander of North-East Command Brig-Gen San Thein, regional tactical operations commanders and senior military officers, regional authorities, Patron of Diamond Palace Co Ltd U Tin Thein and members of the Board of Directors, members of the cultural troupes, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Kachin, Shan, Wa, Kokang, Palaung, Bamar and Lishaw nationals, teachers, pupils and locals of Lashio and Hsipaw, nationals of the villages and the public totaling over 10,000.

(3) Single unit residences of Tekkatho Yeikmon Garden City project handed over to owners

YANGON, 5 Apr - A ceremony to hand over single unit residences completed on the second phase of Tekkatho Yeikmon Garden City Project to owners with the grant, jointly sponsored by Department for Human Settlement and Housing Development and Olympic Co Ltd, was held at the Garden City in Dagon Myothit (East) this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Present also were Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council and departments, Chairman of Olympic Co Ltd U Aik Tun and officials and owners of single unit residences.

U Aik Tun briefed the Secretary-2 on Tekkatho Yeikmon Garden City project and presented souvenirs to the owners.

On behalf of the owners, U Tun Myint spoke words of thanks.

Then, the Secretary-2 and party inspected scale model of Tekkatho Yeikmon Garden City Project and single unit housing complex.

Tekkatho Yeikmon Garden City project began on 1 January 1996 and 96 single unit residences and short houses completed on the first phase were handed over to owners in April 1 997.

105 single unit residences were handed over on second phase today.

The target on the third phase is 70% complete. It includes 150 single unit residences and short houses and 128 low-cost single unit houses.

(4) Use of Firewood Substitute Fuel and Import Substitute Industry Exhibition opens at Forest department

YANGON, 5 Apr - The seven-day Use of Firewood Substitute Fuel and Import Substitute Industry Exhibition sponsored by the Ministry of Forestry, the Ministry of Science and Technology and Township Peace and Development Council opened at the Forest Department on Bayintnaung Road in Insein Township today, with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, senior military officers, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint, departmental heads, advisers, district and township authorities, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, officials of the ministries and private companies producing firewood substitute briquettes, import substitute manufacturers and special guests.

(5) Minister for Culture tours Bago

YANGON, 5 Apr - Minister for Culture U Win Sein, together with Deputy Director-General of Archaeology Department Cmdr Min Swe, visited the construction site of Kambawzathadi Palace of King Bayintnaung in Bago this morning.

Assistant Director of Bago Section of Archaeology Department U Thein Lwin explained excavation of the palace site, archaeological finds and measures taken for greening of the environs.

Assistant Engineer of Division Construction-14 U Win Naing Thant reported on the construction of the palace.

Next, the minister inspected archaeological finds and Bamarathana Throne Hall.

Afterwards, the minister visited Hanthawadi Bodh Gaya Maha Bodhi Pagoda built by King Dhammacedi and Thattahtana ancient pagodas, and inspected stone inscriptions.

Later, the minister and party inspected Monsaleinda Lake and stone inscriptions and gave instructions.

(6) 3.276 litres of Phensedyl seized

YANGON, 5 Apr - A combined team comprising members of Homalin special drug squad, personnel of regional intelligence unit, regional battalion and police members, acting on a tip-off, searched Aye Aye Myint powered boat which was about to leave for Htamanthi Village, on 9 March.

A total of 3.276 litres of Phensedyl including 19 125-millilitre bottles and 18 50-millilitre bottles of Phensedyl were seized from the bag carried by Chit San, 32, son of U Ba Htwe, Htamanthi Village.

Action was taken against him at Homalin Police Station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(7) Minister for Commerce meets MAPT officials in Aungban

YANGON, 5 Apr - Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than met southern Shan State Manager U Aung Kyaw Moe and officials of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading in Aungban on 3 April.

They discussed purchase, storage, milling and distribution of paddy, tasks for fiscal 1998-99 and targets.

The minister then fulfilled the requirements.

(8) Construction of five-storey building of Yangon (Khawegyan) School for the Blind discussed

YANGON, 5 Apr - Leading Committee for construction of five-storey building of Yangon (Khawegyan) School for the Blind of Myanmar Christian Fellowship of the Blind held its meeting at the school in Mayangon Township this evening, attended by Patron of Leading Committee Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone.

Also present were Chairman of Leading Committee Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, Vice-Chairman Commander of No 1 Military Region Lt-Col Thura Win Myint, Acting Director-General of Social Welfare Department Lt-Col Khin Aung, Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein, Chairman of Mayangon Township Peace and Development Council U Myint Than and members, Chairman of Myanmar Christian Fellowship of the Blind U Hla Lwin and members.

The deputy commander reported on construction; and General Secretary of Myanmar Christian Fellowship of the Blind U Thein Lwin and Engineer U Than Sein Tun of Grace Construction on progress of work and future tasks.

The minister then discussed donation, materials, durability, arrangements for safety of the blind and speedy implementation.

(9) Construction of Yoneseik and Duyingabo Sugar Mills inspected

YANGON, 5 Apr - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin inspected construction of Yoneseik and Duyingabo Sugar Mills in Aunglan Township on 2 April.

The minister inspected main factory and foundation. The managing director of Myanma Sugarcane Enterprise and the manager reported on work.

The minister, accompanied by the chairman of Pyay District Peace and Development Council, inspected the site for Nawade Sugar Mill near Mya Village in Pyay.

He inspected progress of work and storage of water in the tank. He discussed tasks for completion of the factory in time and minimizing wastage and loss of materials.

The minister also discussed cultivation of paddy and cotton and irrigation from reservoirs during his inspection tours of Sagaing, Magway, Mandalay and Bago Divisions from 31 March to 2 April.
