(1) VIII Student Sports Festival commences in Haka with mammoth, colourful spectacle Sporting spirit and get-together of young brethren essence of fairplay and togetherness

YANGON, 29 Mar - The opening ceremony of the VIII Student Sports Festival was held on a grand scale yesterday at the Vamthu Mong Sports Stadium in Haka, Chin State, in accordance with the objectives-to help implement the aim of the State "Myanmar Sports-the World to Conquer"; to turn out more fit and healthy students; to contribute sporting movement of the State; to enhance sports standard of the State; to turn out selected, outstanding athletes and to further strengthen Union spirit and patriotism.

Patron of Student Sports Festival Organizing Leading Committee Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an opening address and Patron of Student Sports Festival Organizing Leading Committee Minister for Education U Than Aung formally opened the festival.

(2) Care for orthopaedic patients

YANGON, 29 Mar - Hailing the 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day, U Aye Zaw Win, Dr Daw Khin Sandar Win and family provided breakfast for the patients of Defence Services Orthopaedic Hospital (500 beds) this morning.

They also presented 'Good Morning' bread to the patients. The Emperor group entertained the patients in the evening.

Commandant of the hospital Col Than Myint and wife Daw Thaung Myint presented gifts to the donors.

(3) Dinner marks Tenth Founding Anniversary of ICST

YANGON, 29 Mar - A dinner to mark the Tenth Founding Anniversary of Yangon Institute of Computer Science and Technology under the Ministry of Science and Technology was hosted at Diamond Jubilee Hall of Yangon University this evening.

Present were Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Ministers at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chief Justice U Aung Toe, Attorney-General U Tha Tun, deputy ministers, rectors of universities, department heads, computer technicians, officials of private computer companies and guests.

Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Hlaing Win spoke.

Rector of ICST Dr Kyaw Thein presented a commemorative gift for Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt accepted on his behalf by U Hlaing Win.

Rector Dr Kyaw Thein also presented a commemorative gift to U Thaung.

The cultural troupe of the University of Culture entertained the guests during dinner.

The Rector of ICST presented a flower basket to the cultural troupe.

(4) Agreement to extend loan of $ 10m signed

YANGON, 29 Mar - An agreement to extend a loan of ten million US dollars by the Government of India to the Government of the Union of Myanmar was signed at the Ministry of Finance and Revenue this morning.

Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saram and Director-General of Budget Department U Kyaw Hlaing signed the agreement.

The loan will be used for production of machines and technical services of Ministry of Rail Transportation and Ministry of Industry-2.

Present were Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, counsellors of Indian Embassy, Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, the directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises and guests.

(5) Minister for Industry-l tours Seikkyi-Khanaungto

YANGON, 29 Mar - Central Executive Committee member of Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung arrived at rice mill (150-ton) on U Tun Oh Ward in Seikkyi-Khanaungto Township this morning. He met departmental officials, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Township and Ward Peace and Development Councils, EC and organizers of Township USDA, members of Red Cross and Fire Bridge.

Afterwards, the minister accepted the donations for Township USDA.

The donations were-K 40,000 by Township Peace and Development Council, K 10,000 by Township Entrepreneurs Association, K 10,000 by Factory Manager U Aung Than Oo Daw Nwe Nwe Win and family, K 10,000 by U Aung Maung-Daw Kyin Su and linoleum worth K 15,000.

Then, Minister U Aung Thaung looked into the requirements.

The minister proceeded to Hmam Kyaung on Thayettaw Kyaungtaik in Lanmadaw Township where he inspected construction of Hmam Kyaung being built by General Maintenance Works.

(6) ICRC officials call on Deputy Minister

YANGON, 29 Mar - Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung received a three-member delegation of the International Committee of Red Cross in Geneva, Switzerland, at the Ministry of Home Affairs at 9 am yesterday.

The ICRC officials were Mr Bertrand Leyart of Switzerland, Mr Jens Asbjom of Denmark and Dr Jose Echevarria of Spain.

They discussed their planned second tour of border areas in Myanmar.

Also present were Director-General of the Prisons Department U Kyaw Tun, Deputy Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Brig-Gen Hla Tun, President of Myanmar Red Cross Society Dr Hla Bu and officials.

(7) K 2.5 million for renovation of Five Nikaya Tripitaka Sarthintaik

YANGON, 29 Mar - The cash donation ceremony for the renovation of Five Nikaya Tripitaka Sarthintaik established by Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Myingyan Sayadaws Bhaddanta Sobhita was held at the sarthintaik on Paleyadana Street in Dagon Myothit (South) this afternoon.

Present were members of the Sangha led by Bhaddanta Sobhita, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister U Aung Khin, Director-General of Religious Affairs Department U Arnt Maung, well-wishers and officials.

Chairman Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita administered the Five Precepts.

On behalf of the well-wishers, Ko Han Lin supplicated on the donation.

Then, well-wisher Chinese Buddhist monk Ashin Suvanna donated K 2.5 million to the sarthintaik for the third time.

Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa accepted the donation and presented a certificate of honour to well-wisher.

Bhaddanta Sobhita also presented Dhamma gifts to the Chinese Buddhist monk.

Then, Bhaddanta Sobhita delivered a sermon and all shared merits.

(8) Computer exhibition continues

YANGON, 29 Mar - Computer exhibition to mark the tenth founding. anniversary of Yangon Institute of Computer Science and Technology continued at the Diamond Jubilee Hall of Yangon University this morning.

Computer experts U Thein Oo and U Thaung Tin lectured on IT in Myanmar: Demand Side vs Supply Side and role of education and computer of ASEAN nations.

Visitors and students viewed development in computer technology in Myanmar and sophisticated computer techniques at the exhibition.
