(1) Efforts urged for development of computerised teaching, effective, systematic use of software in schools

YANGON, 14 Mar - The opening ceremony of the instructor course for teaching English with the use of CDS jointly conducted by Higher Education Department, Basic Education Department and Institute of Education of the Ministry of Education assisted by Capital Mac Centre was held at the Institute of Education on Pyay Road this morning, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Ministers at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, U Than Shwe and Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Hlaing Win, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, officials of the department and organizations under the Ministry of Education, rectors and other officials, Vice-President Mr Nick Randall of Dyned International Co Ltd, Managing Director U Denis Win Thein of Capital Mac Centre and course instructors.

(2) Secretary-1 attends ceremony to honour artistes who participated in "A-hla-zone-a-chain" play

YANGON, 14 Mar - Artistes who participated in "A-hla-zone-a-chain" play presented at the National Theatre from 1 to 5 February under the sponsorship of Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs were honoured on the lawn of Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel this evening, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Ministers, the attorney-general, the deputy ministers, members of Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs, artistes, departmental officials and guests.

(3) Cash and kind for 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day

YANGON, 14 Mar - The cash donation ceremony for Tatmadawmen was held at the Office of the Directorate of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this afternoon as a gesture hailing the 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day, attended by Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day, Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Present also were Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Judge Advocate-General Maj-Gen Than Oo, Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Vice-Quartermaster General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, Defence Services Inspector-General Brig-Gen Win Myint, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, senior Tatmadaw officers, Deputy Minister for Information U Thein Sein, well-wishers and officials.

(4) Development work in Htantabin Township gets top-level supervision

YANGON, 14 Mar - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended a ceremony presenting work for development of Htantabin Township in Htantabin this morning. Present also were Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Electric Energy Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Deputy Minister. for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, senior military officers, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint, department heads, service personnel of district and township departments and farmers.

(5) 20.728 kilos of heroin seized

YANGON, 14 Mar - Members of Defence Services Intelligence seized 55 packets of heroin weighing 18.409 kilos from a Toyota van (9Ka/4369) at the Naungnon checkpoint in Shan State on 7 March night.

The authorities uncovered the heroin hidden in a secret compartment of the car and arrested four persons-Maha Aw, Saw Win Aung, Sai Lut and Sai Wang-in connection with the heroin.

Similarly, a combined team comprising DSI member, Lashio Anti-drug Squad members and Customs personnel, acting on a tip-off, stopped and searched a blue Toyota Hilux car (Daukchaik/6935) traveling from Muse to Mandalay.

They found heroin weighing 2.319 kilos on the car and arrested the driver, Sai Sam Mon, 29, of K/6 l Kaungnaung Ward, Muse, and conductor Kyaw Myint, 29, of Htantabin Village, Pyawbwe.

Police booked them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(6) Minister inspects cellular and CDMA station

YANGON, 14 Mar - Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin inspected cellular and CDMA station of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications in Shwegondine this afternoon.

Officials of MPT briefed the minister on CDMA, cellular and trunk radio services.

The minister heard their reports and then gave instructions on maintenance of the CDMA station.

He then inspected maintenance work of phone lines in the city and gave instructions.

The minister previewed the booth of the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs at the 53rd Armed Forces Day Exhibition at Defence Services Museum.

(7) Minister for Energy inspects Thanlyin Oil Refinery

YANGON, 14 Mar - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, accompanied by Deputy Minister U Tin Tun and officials inspected No 1 Oil Refinery (Thanlyin) this afternoon.

The minister inspected refinery of more crude oil and boosting of finished goods production. He spoke of taking special care on wastage and loss in refinery and transport.

The minister inspected tanks for crude and fuel oil lubricants, capacity and reserve storage of fuel.

(8) Myanmar trounce Brunei 4-1

YANGON, 14 Mar - Myanmar trounced Brunei 4-1 in the opening match of Group A qualifiers for the Second Tiger Cup soccer tournament at Thuwunna Youth Training Centre Stadium at 4 pm today.

Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Director General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw, Chairman of Myanmar Brewery Ltd Col Aung San and officials were among the spectators.

Col Thaung Htaik, President of Myanmar Football Federation, and Col Aung San formally opened the qualifiers.

The host Myanmar Xl scored their goals in the first half.

Mid-fielder Myo Myint Htwe scored the opening goal, and captain Myo Hlaing Win made it 2-0 minutes later.

A moment later, Myanmar striker Aung Khaing received Myo Myint Htwe's pass and then fired the ball into Brunei's net for the third.

Myanmar's goals came to an end when Tun Tun Soe scored the fourth just before the end of first half.

Brunei got its consolation goal in the second half.

After the Brunei goal, the two teams could not score any goal till the final whistle. The Man of the Match award went to Myo Myint Htwe.

Myanmar leads the group with three points from one match and has to play Laos on 18 March for the final match of the group, which includes Myanmar, Brunei and Laos.

Brunei meets Laos on 16 March for the second match.
