(1) Secretary-l receives national race leaders of Kachin State Special Region 1
YANGON, 28 Feb - Chairman of Work Committee for the Development of the Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received national race leader of Kachin State Special Region 1 U Za Khun Ting Ring and members U Zaw Hlaing, U Lar San and U Nyein Aye at Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road at 4 pm today.
Present also were Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Deputy Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, heads of departments and officials.
They discussed development of transport, education and health sectors in the region, eradication of narcotic drugs and cultivation of opium substitute crops.

(3) Secretary-l attends opening of summer swimming course at Kokine Swimming Club
YANGON, 28 Feb - Summer swimming course of Kokine Swimming Club was opened at the club in Bahan Township this morning, with an address by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Present were Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council and Chairman of Kokine Swimming Club U Khin Shwe and members.

(4) Myanmar Rice Millers Association holds Annual General Meeting
YANGON, 28 Feb - The ninth Annual General Meeting of Myanmar Rice Millers Association was held at Karaweik Hall this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Also present were Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Ministers at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, and officials of the State Peace and Development Council and departments.
Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than delivered an address.
Chairman of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry U Khin Maung Yi also spoke.
The new Central Executive Committee of Myanmar Rice Millers Association was formed with U Win Myint as Chairman and U Tin Maung Win as Secretary.
The meeting concluded with MRMA Chairman U Win Myint's address.

YANGON, 28 Feb - A foundation laying ceremony for the construction of eight-storey building of Maha Theindawgyi Pariyatti Sarthintaik was held there in Pabedan Township this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Member of the State Calendar Advisory Committee U Kyaw read the stone inscription.
Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo planted a gold casket containing nine precious gems at the designated place.
At 7.29 am Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, Ministers at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin and Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye laid the cornerstones.
Then, Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than put the stone inscription in place.
Later, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party showered confetti on the foundation stones.
After the foundation-laying ceremony, a donation ceremony for the construction of the new building was held and Presiding Sayadaw of Maha Theindawgyi Pariyatti Sarthintaik administered the Five Precepts.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees U Han supplicated on arrangements for the construction of the new building and the donation.
Then, well-wishers presented donation totaling KS 13 million to Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and officials.
Later, merits were shared.

YANGON, 28 Feb - Tatmadaw families and well-wishers donated rice, edible oil and cash to Mary Chapman's School for the Deaf in Thantaman Street, Dagon Township, today.

YANGON, 28 Feb - Final-year student Maung Aung Gyi of Institute of Medicine 1 and high school student Maung Aye Maung Maung of Kyauktan Township Basic Education High School 1 arrived back here by air this evening after receiving awards at the prize presenting ceremony of the 30th Anniversary ASEAN Founding Anniversary Commemorative Essay, Poster and Photo Contest held at the Office of Secretary-General of ASEAN in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 27 February.
They were welcomed by Deputy Ministers for Education Dr Than Nyunt and Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director-General of Higher Education Department U Myo Nyunt, Director-General of Basic Education Department U Bo Win, Director-General of ASEAN Affairs Department U Aye Lwin, Director-General Of Medical Science Department Dr Kyaw Myint, rectors, officials and families of the two.
Among 220 contestants of nine nations, Maung Aung Gyi won the first prize in essay contest and the contestant of Singapore was second and the contestant of the Philippines third.
In poster contest, Maung Aye Maung Maung was the second prize winner Maung Nyein Chan Aung of Kyauktan Township BEHS 1, Maung Shu Maung of Tamway Township BEHS 3, Maung Zaw Min Thein of Bahan Township BEHS 1, Maung Chit Ko Ko of Thingangyun Township BEHS 1 and Ma Aye Myat Mon of Dagon Township BEHS 1 won special prizes and those of the Philippines and Malaysia the first and the third respectively.
In colour photo contest, NyaungU Than Htay of Myanmar won the special prize.
Maung Aung Gyi collected US $ 5,000 from the contest and Maung Aye Maung Maung US $ 1,500.

(8) SPA Motorcycle Ltd meets the Press
YANGON, 28 Feb - SPA Motorcycle Ltd of Myanmar met the Press concerning the 23rd International Award for the Best Trade Name presented to the company by Trade Leaders Club of Geneva, Switzerland, at FMI Centre on Bogyoke Aung San Street this morning.
It was attended by officials of the News and Periodicals Enterprise, Director of the company U Soe Myint and officials and guests.
U Soe Myint explained about the award and then replied to the questions raised by those present.

(9) Deputy Minister for A&I tours Chin State
YANGON, 28 Feb - Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung met service personnel of offices in townships and districts under the ministry in Kalay on 21 February.
The deputy minister and Deputy Minister for Science and Technology Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko inspected apple and mulberry plantations and silk production in Tiddim on 22 February.
The deputy minister discussed cultivation of mulberry and breeding of quality silk worm with silkworm breeders.
He presented prizes to silkworm breeders who sold most for 1997-98 in Tunzan Township.
The deputy minister attended Htidaw hoisting ceremony of Kakuthan Pagoda on 25 February.
He inspected preparations for Student Sports Festival, rehearsal and booths of ministries.

(10) Cash, medical books presented to MMA
YANGON, 28 Feb - In memory of late Professor Dr Khin Maung Win, daughter Daw Khin San Win and granddaughter Ma Win Win Nwe of No 45 Ward, Dagon Myothit (North) presented K one million and books on medicine at new auditorium of Myanmar Medical Association on Theinbyu Road this morning.
Chairman. of MMA (Central) Professor Dr Myo Myint accepted the cash and gifts and presented a certificate of honour to the donor.
Present also were EC members of MMA.
