(1) DSA cadets urged to acquire skills to implement noble aims of State
YANGON, 24 Feb - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye inspected Defence Services Academy in PyinOoLwin Township, Mandalay Division, yesterday morning.
Accompanied Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, senior military officers of Army, Navy and Air and Ministers, the General helicoptered to PyinOoLwin from Monywa Township, Sagaing Division, on 22 February evening.
On arrival at PyinOoLwin, they were welcomed by Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and officials.
The next morning, the General met Commandants of DSA, Defence Services Institute of Technology and military training schools of PyinOoLwin Station, military officers, professors, lecturers, assistant lecturers, instructors and cadets in Convocation Hall of DSA.
They should strive to become skilled persons in implementing the noble aims of the State, which are, the emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation and the powerful, qualified, modern and patriotic Tatmadaw, he stressed, explaining do's and don'ts.
He then cordially greeted officials and cadets.
The General attended to the needs in conducting computer courses for cadets and extension of buildings at DSA.
This morning, he inspected military training schools in the township.
Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, together with Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and officials, inspected chosen sites to build training schools in Pyin Oo Lwin on 22 February evening.
Maj-Gen Ye Myint briefed him on situation of a chosen site to build the schools near Zeebingyi village in the township.
Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing reported on the chosen site, area, power supply and plans for construction of an advanced police training institute, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone on construction of the Central Fire Services Training School and Head of Department U Hla Min of Central Institute of Civil Service on building of Upper Myanmar CICS.
The Secretary-2 looked into their requirements.
At a check point at 24-Mile in the township, he urged personnel to give Special consideration to the convenience of travelers and smooth and speedy flow of goods in checking to prevent smuggling of valuable natural resources abroad and untaxed goods into the nation.
Minister Col Tin Hlaing inspected District Commissioner's Office in PyinOoLwin and explained to personnel on functions of General Administration Department yesterday.
Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone also inspected a pre-primary school in Thumingala Ward, a nunnery (Zayankyaung Sarthintaik) in Myananda Ward and self-reliance-run pre-primary schools on No 1 Base Military Hospital (700-bed) and Defence Service Administrative Training School.

YANGON, 24 Feb - Myanmar Education Committee held its meeting No 1/98 at the Universities Central Council Hall of the Higher Education Department at 3.45 pm today and Chairman of MEC Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an address.

Addressing the meeting, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said unscrupulous subversives are spreading baseless rumors about education. He asserted that they are completely untrue.

YANGON, 24 Feb - Member of the Central Panel of Patrons of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met trainees of USDA Special Refresher Course No 1 and Management Course No 13 for Executives at the Central Public Relations Unit in Hmawby this morning.
The Secretary-1 said USDA members are to combine the lectures with practical work and spoke of nurturing themselves to be persons qualified to serve the country in the future.
He spoke at length on political, economic and social development, national solidarity, measures taken for emergence of a modern, developed nation and international situation.
Present were Secretary-General of USDA U Than Aung, CEC members, the course-in-charge and trainees.

(4) Myanmar Energy & Machinery Expo '98 opens
YANGON, 24 Feb - A ceremony to open Myanmar Energy & Machinery Expo '98, sponsored by the Ministry of Energy, was held at Tatmadaw Convention Centre at 8 am today.
Present also were Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Deputy Ministers for Energy U Tin Tun and Brig-Gen Thein Aung, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, staff of the embassies concerned, Directors-General and managing directors of concerned departments and enterprises, officials and guests.
Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi, co-sponsors Managing Director of CP Exhibition of Hongkong Mr Andrew Kny and Managing Director U Shein Win of Silver Kris Co Ltd of Yangon formally opened the exhibition.
Altogether 60 companies of 17 countries show sectors of oil and gas, electric power, textile, leather, plastic, foodstuff, instruments for wood-based industries.
The exhibition is open to the public from 24 to 26 February. Admission is free.

(5) Exams of Master's, post-graduate diploma courses under way
YANGON, 24 Feb - Examinations of master's courses and post-graduate diploma courses for 1997-98 academic year of Yangon University, Mandalay University, Institute of Economics, Mawlamyine University and Taunggyi University under the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education are being held from 23 February to 7 March.

(6) Deputy Prime Minister receives Ambassador of Japan
YANGON, 24 Feb - Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun, on behalf of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, received Ambassador of Japan Mr Yoichi Yamaguchi, who has completed his tour of duty, at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 9 am to day.
Present also were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe and Director-General U Khin Maung Win of Political Department.

(7) Minister for Foreign Affairs to attend Second Ministerial Meeting on Haze
YANGON, 24 Feb - Myanmar delegation led by Chairman of the National Commission for Environmental Affairs and Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw left here by air this morning for Kuching to attend the Second Ministerial Meeting on Haze to be held on 25 February in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.
The minister was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe, heads of departments under the ministry and officials.

(8) Myanma, Japan sign exchange of notes on debt relief
YANGON, 24 Feb - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein and Ambassador of Japan Mr Yoichi Yamaguchi signed an exchange of notes on debt relief at the ministry this morning.
Japanese Government was to grant Yen 2 billion as debt relief to the Myanmar Government which repaid the amount for the loan in February. The grant was the 19th of its kind granted by the Japanese Government as debt relief assistance.
The cash assistance will be spent on purchasing machinery and equipment, raw materials and accessories for the ministries and organizations.
Also present were Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun and officials of Japanese Embassy and departments concerned.

(9) Fourth kidney transplant operation successfully performed
YANGON, 24 Feb - The fourth kidney transplant operation took place at the new Yangon General Hospital on Bogyoke Aung San Street here at 11.45 am today.
The operation was performed by professors, physicians, specialists, nurses and state
The kidney transplant was operated on patient 54 year-old U San Aung of 25, Khanmahsaung Street, Taunglonbyan Ward, Mingala Taungnyunt Township. The patient's son 25-year-old Ko Phyo Wai Aung donated the kidney for his father.
Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and officials arrived at the operation theatre and encouraged the patient. They praised professors, physicians and staff and fulfilled the requirements. The ministers later conversed with Daw Ni Ni the wife of the patient, and family.
Anesthetists were Professor Daw Thein Thein Khaing, Dr Mya Aye Kyu, Dr Kyi Kyi San and Dr Kyaw Kyaw Soe.
Professor U Than Aye, Dr U Toe Lwin and Dr Daw Htay Htay Myint operated on Ko Phyo Wai Aung to remove one kidney which was kept by Dr Phone Myint.
Professors U Than Aye and U Khin Tun, Dr U Win Myaing and Dr U Kyaw Swa Hlaing successfully transplanted the kidney in patient U San Aung at 4 pm.
Professor U Paing Soe, Dr Khin Maung Htay, Dr Tin Shwe and Dr Aung Zin Oo gave medical treatment to the patient.
The fourth kidney transplant operation was performed jointly by professors, physicians, specialists and senior nurses Daw Than Nyunt and Daw Kyu Kyu Mon and staff altogether numbering 35 with the supervision of Medical Superintendent Dr Min Swe.
Both the patient and the donor are doing well.

(10) Syringes and electric organ presented to MMCWA
YANGON, 24 Feb - Japan-Myanmar Economic and Culture Promotion Association presented 1,000 sets of syringe for use at maternity clinic and an electric organ for child care unit at Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association on Banyadala Road in Tamway Township this morning.
Representative of Board of Directors Mr Jiro Shiobara of the JMECPA presented the gifts to Vice-Chairperson of MMCWA Dr Khin Win Shwe.
Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe then presented a certificate of honour to the donor.
Present were CEC members of MMCWA, officials of Japanese Embassy and donors.
