(1) Indoor Tennis Court opens at Theinbyu Tennis Plaza

YANGON 4 Feb - An indoor tennis court was opened at Theinbyu Tennis Plaza in Mingala Taungnyunt Township this morning, attended by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present also were Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, heads of departments, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw, presidents of Myanmar Sports Federations, trainees of Sports and Physical Education Institute, athletes and guests.

Director (Playground and Gymnasium) of SPED Lt-Col Than Zaw reported on construction of the sports facility.

Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win formally opened it. The Secretary-1, the ministers and guests then inspected it. They watched skill demonstration of athletes.

The Indoor Tennis Court, 140 feet long and 100 feet wide, with two stands, toilets, three dressing rooms and a meeting hall, holds 300 spectators.

Construction started in November 1996 and the facility costs K 18.4 million.

(2) Armed Forces Day Commemorative Military Band Contest commences

YANGON, 14 Feb - The 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Seventh Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Contest opened at the People's Square today with an address by Chairman of the Leading Committee for Observance of Armed Forces Day Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present at the opening ceremony were Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, Chairman of the Management Committee for Observance of 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Military Appointment-General Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Judge Advocate-General Maj-Gen Than Oo, Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Commandant of the National Defence College Maj-Gen San Aung, Chairman of the Leading Committee for Organizing the Military Band Contest Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, senior military officers, officials of the Management Committee and Subcommittee for Observance of Armed Forces Day, Tatmadawmen and families, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades and guests.

The competing military bands took their designated places at the People's Square at 7.40 am.

(3) Minister visits monastic education schools

YANGON, 14 Feb - Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, accompanied by Director General of the Department for the Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Sann Lwin, Deputy Director-General of the Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint and directors, deputy directors and officials, visited monastic education schools in Hline Township this morning.

On arrival at Kyanginkyaung Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Hline Township, the minister and party were welcomed by Yangon Division Education Officer (Inspection) U Tin Myo Lwin, Chairman of Hline Township Peace and Development Council U Nyan Oo, Hline Township Education Officer U Thein Myint, ward authorities and officials.

The minister and party received the Five Precepts administered by Kyangin Sayadaw Bhaddanta Indaka.

The minister supplicated on matters related to monastic education and religious affairs, and presented offertories to the Sayadaw.

He also donated K 20,000 for the monastic education school.

Then, the minister and party toured the monastic education school.

Next, they proceeded to Nyaungsi Yekan Monastery in Hline Township.

They encouraged students of the monastic education school, and donated exercise books.

Later, they presented offertories to Presiding Sayadaw Bhaddanta Candamala.

The minister donated K 20,000 for the monastic education school.

(4) Myanmar delegation leaves for Brunei

YANGON, 14 Feb - A Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Education U Than Aung left here this morning to attend the meeting of South-East Asia Ministers of Education Organization to be held in Brunei from 15 to 17 February.

The delegation was seen off at the airport by Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister U Than Shwe, Deputy Ministers for Education Dr Than Nyunt and Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Ambassador of Brunei Pengrian Dato Paduka Asmalee Ahmad and officials.

(5) Tourism entrepreneurs urged to strike a balance between self-interest and others' interest

YANGON, 14 Feb - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met entrepreneurs of domestic and foreign tourism companies at the Karaweik this morning.

Present also were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General U Khin Maung Latt, Managing Director Col Kyi Tun and departmental officials.

The minister urged entrepreneurs to strike a balance between self-interest and others' interest in doing business, and added on the one hand, they need to do business in their interest, and on the other, they are obliged to contribute to the interest of the State, prevent the image of the State from being tarnished and maintain the region as a tourist destination which is rich in historical and cultural heritage.

In doing business, they are required to strictly adhere to laws, rules and regulations and directives issued by the ministry, he said and added if any companies are doing business only in their interest without communicating with the ministry, their licences will be revoked.

The South-East Asia region faces currency crisis, which may hamper the development of tourism industry, he remarked and stated the number of tourists arriving Myanmar is on the increase, and the ministry will provide necessary assistance to the tourism companies.

Then, Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and U Khin Maung Latt spoke.

The officials replied to queries of the entrepreneurs.

YANGON, 14 Feb - Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung received Chairman of YEMC Lin Zai You and party at his office this evening.

Present also were Deputy Minister Col Than Zin, Managing Director U Than Shwe of Myanma Ceramics Enterprise and officials.

(7) Cash, relief supplies presented to fire victims

YANGON, 14 Feb - A ceremony to present cash and relief supplies to fire victims of Ward 5, Mayangon Township, was held at Primary School No 24 in the township yesterday evening. It was attended by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, secretaries and executives of Yangon West District and Township USDAs, township authorities and departmental officials.

Minister Col Tin Hlaing accepted over K 130,000 and relief supplies worth K 23,000 donated by Township/Ward USDAs and Peace and Development Councils, departments and well-wishers for the victims.

(8) Minister inspects construction of sports ground, gymnasium

YANGON, 14 Feb - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win inspected construction of sports ground and gymnasium here this morning.

Accompanied by Director-General Col Hla Myint Kyaw of Sports and Physical Education Department, OSD of Ministry of Sports Col Thaung Htaik, Adviser Col Ngo Ciin Pau and officials, the minister inspected construction of the gymnasium of Myanma Traditional Sports Federation near Theinbyu Tennis Plaza, the training camp of Myanmar Rowing Federation at Inya Lake and the stands of Padonma Sports Ground in Sangyoung Township.

During the inspection tour, the minister called for timely completion of the construction and met the rowers undergoing training for international tournaments.

(9) Hostels for parade columns inspected

YANGON, 14 Feb - On behalf of the Chairman of the 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day Observance Leading Committee, member Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo inspected hostels for Armed Forces Day Parade columns this morning.

Brig-Gen Maung Nyo and senior military officers (Army, Navy and Air) inspected hostels at Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters, Kyaikkasan Grounds, Maintenance Air Base Headquarters, Mingaladon Combined Camp and No 1 Transit Camp, gathering point at Myoma Grounds and the Resistance Park.

(10) Plastic factory No 2 inspected

YANGON, 14 Feb - Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Col Than Zin and Managing Director of Myanma Pharmaceuticals Industries Col Kyaw Myint and officials inspected plastic factory No 1 in Mayangon Township this morning.

Manager U Saw Lwin reported on production, finance and management. The deputy minister fulfilled the requirements.

He then discussed boosting of production, minimizing wastage, cleanliness and welfare.

(11) USDA CEC member meets USDA members in Yankin

YANGON, 14 Feb - Central Executive Committee member of Union Solidarity and Development Association U Thaik Tun lectured on the objectives of the association to members of Yankin Township USDA at Teachers' Training School at 7.30 pm yesterday.

It was attended by Secretary of Yangon East District USDA U Tin Hlaing and executives, Chairman of Yankin Township Peace and Development Council U Kyaw Swa, Township Police Officer Police Deputy Superintendent Ko Lay, Secretary of Yankin Township Union Solidarity and Development Association U Than Win, executives and members, secretaries of township USDAs in Yangon East District and executives, members of Fire Brigade and Red Cross, chairmen of Ward Peace and Development Councils and members, teachers and trainees of the school.

(12) Chairman of Working Committee for Providing Medical Care to parade columns inspects hostels

YANGON, 14 Feb - The working committee for providing medical care to parade columns of the 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day Director of Medical Services of the Ministry of Defence Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han and members visited the hostels at Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters, Kyaikkasan Sports Grounds, No 1 Transit Centre, Maintenance Air Force Base and Compound Mass of Yangon Command this morning.

Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han and party inspected sanitation and providing medical care to Tatmadawmen of Armed Forces Day parade columns.

Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han called for preparations to provide medical care to Tatmadawmen.

(13) Chairperson of Japan-Myanmar Friendship Association party visit Women's Home

YANGON, 14 Feb - Chairperson of Japan-Myanmar Friendship Association Mrs Yoshiko Ohtaka and party visited Women's Home of the Social Welfare Department on Thanlwin Road, Kamayut Township, at 2 pm today.

They were welcomed by Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Dr May May Yi, Adviser to ladies' and women's group of MNWCWA Dr Khin Sandar Win, Assistant Director Daw Htoo Yaw of the Social Welfare Department and officials.

Administrator Daw Nu Kyi briefed the visitors on the Women's Home. The visitors observed work of the home. Later, Mrs Ohtaka and party went shopping at the booth of the home.
