(1) Senior General Than Shwe tees off in Tatmadaw Golf Tourney
YANGON, 1 Feb - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe, accompanied by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and Chief of Bureau of Special Operation and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, arrived at Mingaladon Defence Services Golf Course this morning.
The 1997-98 Defence Services Commander-in-Chief's Trophy Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Golf Tournament continued for the second and final day there.
The Senior General and party were welcomed by Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Military Appointments-General Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Advocate-General Maj-Gen Than Oo, ministers and senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence.
The Senior General teed off in the golf tournament and left the course at 11 am.

Next, the Secretary-1 presented prizes to U Kyaw Aung who accepted on behalf of U On Pe (Tet Toe), winner of Award for lifelong Contribution to Literature, Kyaukpadaung Soe Myint, Shwe Da Maung Lay Yi, Taungdwin Maung Thin Kyaw, first, second and third in collected poems genre; Nandar Soe (Sinbyugyun), U Nyunt Han, on behalf of Min Hein Hto and Ma Lay (Paukkhaung) in novel genre and Nay Myo Thant, Tekkatho Nang Phyu Phyu Tun and Aung Soe (Veterinarian) in collected stories genre.
Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung presented prizes to Dr Kyaw Sein, U Aung Thant and U Aye Ko (Irrigation) in treatise genre and Maung Maung Thein, Cho Cho Lwin and U Thaung Ngwe in Research literature genre.
Minister U Than Aung presented prizes to outstanding students in Myanmar literature Ma Nyunt Nyunt San of Hline Campus, Maung Zaw Win Kyaing of University of Distance Education (Pakokku Branch), Ma Ni Ni Aye of Hinthada College, Mi The Aye Khaing of UDE (Mawlamyine Branch) and outstanding students Ma Mya Khet and Ma Ei Ei Thant of University of Culture.

(3) Secretary-1 inspects development work, preservation of cultural heritage
YANGON, 1 Feb - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt left here by Tatmadaw flight on 31 January morning and arrived at Bagan-NyaungU Airport at 9.10 am.

The Secretary-1, the ministers and party went to project to sink a tunnel for a railroad through Ponnya Hill in Gangaw Township.

(4) London-Myanmar Open Professional Golf Tournament coordination meeting
YANGON, 1 Feb - A coordination meeting on the third London-Myanmar Open Professional Golf Tournament to be jointly organized by Myanmar Golf Federation and Asia Professional Golfers Association (APGA) was held at Bagan Golf Course in Bagan this evening, attended by Patron of Organizing Leading Committee for Golf Tournament Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Present also were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander Brig-Gen Soe Win, ministers, senior Tatmadaw officers, deputy ministers and members of organizing leading committee and the work committee.
Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-1 said the London-Myanmar Open Professional Golf Tournament 1997 was successfully held in Yangon, and the third Tournament 1998 would be held from 5 to 8 March in Bagan in central Myanmar, and added that, the world nations would then witness stability and development of Myanmar.
He said the participants and visitors would also witness the rich ancient cultural heritage in Bagan, restoration of the heritage through the third tournament, which would refute falsehood about Bagan spread by destructive elements.
Bagan and Mandalay are well known for their ancient cultural heritage in the world, the world will know the true situation of Bagan and Myanmar through the third tournament to be held in Bagan and it will contribute to Myanmar's tourism industry, he added.
He urged the officials to coordinate and cooperate to achieve success of the tournament, and called on the golfers to take part in the tournament studying Myanma cultural heritage.
Then, Chairman of Leading Committee Brig-Gen Win Hlaing and committee member Thura U Maung Ko presented reports on the preparations.
It was followed by supplementary reports presented by officials.
The Secretary-1 gave instructions after hearing the reports.

(5) Secretary-2 attends 1996-97 annual PTA meeting of Mingaladon Township BEHS No 2
YANGON, 1 Feb - The Parent-Teacher Association of the Basic Education High School No 2, Mingaladon Township, held its annual meeting for 1996-97 this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Present also were Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Vice Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Director of Public Relations and Psychological Warfare Col Khin Aung Myint, Director of People's Militia and Frontier Forces Col San Lin and senior military officers, Director-General of Basic Education Department U Bo Win and officials, school administrative officer Col Sein Win and executives of Parent-Teacher Association, parents and pupils.
Col Sein Win delivered an opening address.
New executives of PTA were elected and approved.
Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party gave away prizes to outstanding pupils.
Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung reported on academic, organizational and administrative matters.
Col Khin Aung Myint, U Bo Win and parents put forward suggestions about turning out outstanding pupils.
Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave instructions on promoting education standard, improvement of school buildings, fulfilling the requirements of school furniture and financial matters, development of practical skills, teaching industrial subjects and working for staff welfare within the framework of rules and regulations.

(6) Construction of Aung Zeya Bridge project proceeding on schedule
YANGON, 1 Feb - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo this afternoon inspected construction site of Aung Zeya Bridge project which will link Hlinethaya Township and Insein Township.
First, Superintending Engineer (Project) U Khin Maung briefed Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo on progress of work.
Managing Director of Public Works U Tint Swe briefed the Secretary-2 on project works, Director-General of Waterways Department U Pe Than on the flow of water in Hline River, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and Director-General of Department for Human Settlement and Housing Development U Arnt Kyaw on urban project.
Then, the Secretary-2 inspected construction work being undertaken and gave suggestions.

(7) Cultivation of summer paddy under way in Bago Division
YANGON, 31 Jan - Chairman of Bago District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tun Aye inspected summer paddy cultivation in DaikU, Nyaunglaybin and Kyauktaga townships on 28 January.
Accompanied by Assistant Director U Myint Thein of Bago District Irrigation Department and officials, he first inspected summer paddy fields irrigated from Kwin Creek near Tawkywein in Kyauktaga Township and cordially met the farmers and fulfilled their requirements.
He inspected Kwin Creek reservoir which irrigates 3,000 acres of summer paddy in Phyu Township and 382 acres in Kyauktaga Township.
They then inspected 230 acres of summer paddy near Khingyi Model Village in Kyauktaga Township and 150 acres in Shansu Village-tract, Nyaunglaybin Township.
Lt-Col Tun Aye cordially met farmers and instructed officials to fulfil their requirements.
Afterwards, he inspected summer paddy cultivation in Pauktabin. Pyinbongyi and Kaingta villages, DaikU Township, and attended to the farmers' requirements.
