(1) Secretary-1 receives Sales Director of Fritz Werner

YANGON, 29 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Sales Director of Fritz Werner Company Mr Paul Dieter Christ and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 5 pm today.

Present also together with the Secretary-1 were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(2) Basic English Proficiency Course on Pitakat concludes

YANGON, 29 Jan - Basic English Proficiency Course on Pitakat No 3/97 sponsored by the Ministry of Religious Affairs concluded at the Foreign Missionary Division of Department for Promotion and Propagation of Sasana this afternoon.

The concluding ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Director-General of Department for Promotion and Propagation of Sasana U Sann Lwin, Deputy Director-General of Department of Religious Affairs Dr Myo Myint, officials, course instructors and trainees.

Deputy Minister U Aung Khin delivered an address and presented awards to the outstanding trainees.

Director-General U Sann Lwin presented certificates.

(3) U Win Aung presents credentials

YANGON, 30 Jan - U Win Aung, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Kingdom of Norway, presented his Credentials to His Majesty King Harald V, King of Norway, on 20 January 1998, in Oslo.

(4) Minister for Electric Power inspects functions of MEPE

YANGON, 29 Jan - Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, accompanied by Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise, inspected installation of new lamp-posts and changing cables in Nya and Tatalingyeik Wards, North Okkalapa Township, this evening.

Then, the minister met members of Township and Ward Peace and Development Councils and ward-elders.

He told officials to complete the work as quickly as possible and future programmes.

Then, the minister and party also inspected installation of new lampposts, changing cable and chosen site where new transformer will be installed in Ward 2 and Khawechan ward in Mayangon Township.

He also gave instructions.

(5) Cooperative Fair (Mandalay) continues

YANGON, 29 Jan - Cooperative Fair (Mandalay) continued for fifth day at Thiri Mandala New Market yesterday.

Observers and buyers crowded Bago Division booth selling export crops, stoves at Nahtoegyi Township booth, various commodities at booth of Mandalay Division GEC, dairy products at the booth of Mandalay Division Cooperative Syndicate, jade ornaments at Kachin State booth and electronic goods and computers at Mandalay Cooperative Store No 1 booth and private booths.

Fashion show and entertainment programmes of Fine Arts Department, students of pre-primary schools and Cooperative Regional College and Myoma Band and comedians. Over 200,000 people including foreigners visited the fair and a total of K 8,038 million including K 5.89 million for exports have been realized through contract and K 19.7 million till today. Mandalay Division Cooperative Society got a contract to export 500 tones pigeon pea worth US S 127,500.

(6) Book Fair on 2-27 Feb

YANGON, 29 Jan - As a gesture hailing the 51st Anniversary of Union Day, Sarpay Beikman Board of the Printing and Publishing Enterprise will organize Book Fair from 2 to 27 February as a special programme to sell books.

Various kinds of books published by Sarpay Beikman, News and Periodicals Enterprise, Myawady Literature House, Religious Affairs Department and private publishing houses will be available at special discount price at the book fair which will be open to the public from 9 am to 5 pm daily during those days.

(7) Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosts dinner in honour of contributors

YANGON, 29 Jan - Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted dinner in honour of contributors to the Ministry's Golden Jubilee Magazine published by the ministry in the new building this evening.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Patron of Leading Committee for Organizing MOFA Golden Jubilee U Ohn Gyaw attended the dinner and delivered an address.

Present also were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe, heads of departments of the ministry, members of Leading Committee for Golden Jubilee, authors and guests.

First, Minister U Ohn Gyaw extended the greetings.

Then, the minister, Director-General of Department of Myanmar Missions Abroad U Nyo Win and Chairman of Leading Committee for Golden Jubilee Director-General of International Organizations and Economic Department and Director-General of Foreign Languages Department U Nyunt Maung Shein presented souvenirs to authors.

(8) Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council tours townships

YANGON, 29 Jan - Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Thein Zaw inspected projects in Chauk, Seikphyu, Pwintbyu and Minbu (Saku) townships in the division on 21 January.

He arrived at Ayeyawady River Bridge (Anawrahta) Project that will link Chauk with Seikphyu.

At the project office, the officer-in-charge and other officials briefed him on progress of work.

Afterwards, Col Thein Zaw and party inspected the project site, construction of piers and approach road on Seikphyu bank.

They later inspected Seikphyu-Salin Road, nurseries for summer paddy project in Pwintphyu Township, irrigation from Meizali Dam for summer paddy and Mon Creek Bridge Project.

Col Thein Zaw heard reports on progress of work presented by departmental officials and fulfilled the requirements.

He later toured the sandalwood plantation in the compound of Sandagu Natha Kyaungdawya Pagoda in Pwintbyu Township.

He proceeded to Minbu (Saku) Township and met district and township authorities at Mann Shwesettaw Festival temporary office.

He heard reports on all-round renovation of Upper Settawya and Lower Settawya and later inspected construction of lodging units for pilgrims and renovation of Upper Settawya and Lower Settawya.

The annual Mann Shwesettaw Pagoda Festival Will be from 1 February to 17 April.

(9) Meetings on accurate baseline data collection on poppy cultivation, addicts held in states, divisions

YANGON, 29 Jan - The Central, Committee for Drug Abuse Control has launched the accurate baseline data collection on poppy Cultivation and addicts 1998 as a national campaign and the coordination meetings on the project are being held in various states and divisions.

The meetings to coordinate the accurate baseline data collection were held at Rakhine State Peace and Development Council in Sittway on 9 January chaired by Commander of Western Command Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, at the Prisons Department in Myitkyina on 12 January chaired by Secretary of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Aye, at Kayin State Peace and Development Council Office in Hpa-an on 13 January chaired by Secretary of Kayin state Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Yin, at Bago Division Peace and Development Council Office in Bago on 13 January chaired by the Secretary of Bago Division Peace and Development Council, at Mon State Peace and Development Council Office in Mawlamyine on 13 January chaired by Commander of South-East Command Brig-Gen Myint Aung, at Yangon Division Peace and Development Council in Yangon on 16 January chaired by Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, at Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Office in Lashio on 17 January chaired by Commander of North-East Command Brig-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, and at Mandalay Division Union Solidarity and Development Association Office in Mandalay on 19 January chaired by Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint.

(10) 137,330 baskets of paddy purchased in Pantanaw Township

YANGON, 29 Jan - Farmers collectively sold 1,583 baskets of paddy at Mayan Village Paddy Purchase Centre in Pantanaw Township on 27 January.

Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Than Sein and officials observed the paddy purchase and cordially met the farmers.

So far, a total of 137,330 baskets of paddy have been purchased in the township.

Kawa Township

Farmers from 95 villages of Kawa Township are continuously selling paddy at purchase centres.

Township authorities, USDA, Auxiliary Fire Brigade and Red Cross members and officials are helping them for their convenience in the sale of paddy.

A total of 223,372 baskets of paddy have been purchased from farmers in the township on 27 January.

Among townships of Bago Division, Kawa Township is the first township which bought biggest amount of paddy.

(11) "How to take the exam" lectures on maths and physics to be published

YANGON, 29 Jan - "How to take the exam" lectures on mathematics and physics for students who will sit for the Basic Education High School Exam will appear in Sunday Supplements (1 February issue) of the Myanma Alin and the Kyemon.

(12) Minister for A & I receives Director of Dhaka-based CIRDAP

YANGON 29 Jan - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin received Director Dr A V S Reddy of Dhak-based Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) at his office today.

Myanmar became a member of CIRDAP in 1995 and is actively participating in the tasks in cooperation with other member countries.
