(1) Secretary-1 receives UNHCR Director

YANGON, 28 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Director of Regional Bureau for Asia and Pacific of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Mr F Fouinat and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 5 pm today.

With the Secretary-1 were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw and Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

The guests were accompanied by Chief of Mission of UNHCR Office in Yangon Mr Canh Nguyen Tang.

(2) Saddan Reservoir Projects inspected

YANGON, 28 Jan - Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Thein Zaw, accompanied by Magway District Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Htay Win meet officials at Taungdwingyi Township Peace and Development Council office on 20 January.

They discussed beautifying and greening of the town and inspected construction of the town hall.

Col Thein Zaw and party went to Saddan Reservoir Project site in Myothit Township and inspected construction of dam, forest conservation in watershed and greening.

In meeting with departmental personnel and social associations, Chairman Col Thein Zaw called for cooperation in the project for success. He also inspected nursery of Township Forest Department, cotton purchase at Township Purchase Centre and fire prevention measures.

In the afternoon, the chairman inspected greening of watershed areas of Natmauk diversion weir and Natmauk-Yenangyaung Road and discussed rural water supply and construction of small dams and fulfilled the requirements.

(3) Reminder for cars with temporary registration

YANGON, 28 Jun - Temporary registration numbers are issued to motor vehicles or motor cycles imported or manufactured by local factories to enable them to drive to the godowns, workshops or showrooms in accordance with the 1964 Motor Vehicles Act and for necessary preparations before regular registration numbers are issued to them. The Road Administration Department has taken the measure in accordance with Section 14 (b) of the 1989 Motor Vehicles Law.

The prescribed dates for some vehicles with temporary registration numbers are found to have expired. Hence, owners of vehicles which have exceeded 30 days from the dates on which they were issued temporary registration numbers are to contact the RAD (Head Office) as soon as possible to obtain the registration numbers.

The department is reported to have warned that it will cancel the temporary registration numbers and will not register vehicles including department-owned cars if they fail to conform.

(4) Shoppers throng Cooperative Fair (Mandalay)

YANGON, 28 Jan - The Cooperative Fair (Mandalay) continued for the fourth day at new Thiri Mandala Market in Aungmyethazan Township yesterday.

The fair drew large number of visitors and Jade Producers Cooperatives Societies, Kachin State, Bago Division, Mandalay Cooperatives Syndicate and Taninthayi Division Cooperatives Societies sold ornament, forest products, regional products, handicrafts and marine products.

Nearly 200,000 people including tourists and trainees of Management Refresher Course for EC members of Mandalay Division Union Solidarity and Development Association visited the fair.

Two billion kyats have been realized through contract, K 3.268 billion through cooperative export import enterprise and K 15.8 million from the private shops.

(5) 104,509 baskets of paddy purchased in Gyobingauk

YANGON, 28 Jan - Chairman of Thayawady District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myint Than inspected paddy purchased from farmers at the paddy purchase centre in Letpadan Village-tract, Gyobingauk Township, yesterday.

Accompanied by Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Khin Tun, Assistant Divisional Manager of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading Capt San Htay Maung and officials, he observed the paddy purchase work and gave instructions to officials.

So far, 104,509 baskets of paddy have been purchased in the township.

He also met farmers at the residence of Obosu Village Peace and Development Council Chairman U San Tin and explained to them the new paddy purchase system. In the afternoon, he met rice millers and merchants of the township.

(6) Yangon Maha Thingyan Festival to be held on grand scale

YANGON, 28 Jan - A coordination meeting on holding of Yangon Maha Thingyan Festival on grand scale took place at the City Hall this afternoon.

It was attended by Secretary of Organizing Leading Committee for Holding Yangon Maha Thingyan Festival and Chairman of Work Committee Joint Secretary of Yangon City Development Committee U Kyi Win, YCDC Members U Aung Soe and Col Thaung Wai, officials and guests.

U Kyi Win spoke on the occasion, saying this year's Thingyan Festival would be held on grand scale as in the previous years.

Officials of subcommittees concerned presented reports on sector-wise arrangements for the festival. Under the supervision of the Organizing Leading Committee, this year's Yangon Maha Thingyan Festival will be held with pandals at which entertainment will be presented to revelers in accordance with Myanma culture.

(7) Japanese gifts for development of Karatedo in Myanmar

YANGON, 28 Jan - Karatedo instructor Mr Youshizo Tatetsu of Japan Karatedo Federation presented a 21-in Sony Trinitron TV and a video cassette recorder player Sony Viewtopia set worth K 290,000 to Myanmar Karatedo Federation this morning.

The gifts will be used for advancement of Karatedo in Myanmar. Mr Youshizo, who arrived here under the arrangement of Japan Foundation, also presented two Sony cassette recorder, to be presented one each to the best Karadedo boy and the best Karatedo girl in Student Sports Festival to be held in Chin State this year.

He presented the gifts to President of MKF Police Col Khin Maung Tun at the federation at Aung San Stadium.

Police Col Khin Maung Tun gave a speech and Mr Youshizo explained the purpose of his donation.

General-Secretary of MKF Staff Officer of Sports and Physical Education Department U Soe Win and executives were also present.

(8) Cash donation for NRH

YANGON, 28 Jan - Well-wisher U Aung Than of Aung Fan Belt Shop in Bayintnaung Market donated K 100,000 for National Rehabilitation Hospital through Medical Superintendent Dr Ye Hlaing at the hospital on Kyaikwaing Pagoda Road in Mayangon Township this morning.

Dr Ye Hlaing thanked the donor and presented a certificate of honour.

(9) Travel and tour company black-listed

YANGON, 28 Jan - It was announced that Every Day Travels & Tours Company Limited registered at Companies Registration Office was blacklisted for its unlawful registration of two foreigners as company staff and application of visa extension for them.

The blacklist of the company with registration number 1255/94-95 (23-2-95) at 133, 20th Street, Latha Township, came into affect from the date of the announcement, it is learnt.

(10) Billboards on elimination of narcotic drugs being set up in Hline Township

YANGON, 28 Jan - Under the arrangement of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control, a ceremony to set up billboards on elimination of narcotic drug and to present paintings was held at No 1 Basic Education High School of Hline Township this morning.

Officials of the CCDAC, Township Education Officer U Thein Myint, heads of BEMS and BEHS and students attended the ceremony.

They set up the billboards at BEHS No 1, BEHS No 3, BEMS No 3 and BEMS No 8 at 10 am.

Then, officials of the CCDAC handed the paintings to be hung in school halls to heads of respective schools.

(11) Four sets of flood-lamps donated to Lawka Manicual Pagoda

YANGON, 28 Jan - On behalf of Myanmar nationals living in Singapore and Dhammacakka Wut Association, Engineer U Ko Hsan of Singapore Branch Office of Hitachi Plant Engineering and Construction Co Ltd, presented four sets of 250-watt flood-lamps, electric wires and other equipment for Lawka Manicula Pagoda in Lumbini Park in Nepal to Ambassador U Tin Lat in Kathmandu on 4 January, Golden Jubilee Independence Day.

They presented four sets of 1000-watt flood-lamps before. Those wishing to donate cash and kind to religious buildings in Lumbini Park may contact Ministry of Religious Affairs and Myanmar Ambassador to Nepal.

(12) Eight members of armed groups exchange arms for peace

YANGON, 28 Jan - The State Peace and Development Council is striving for national reconsolidation, upholding the Three Main National Causes, and implementing the 12 political, economic and social objectives for emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation.

After realizing the goodwill and endeavours of the Government, armed group members are exchanging arms for peace, abandoning their destructive acts which do not benefit the nation.

Lt San Phe and Sergeant Tin Win of No 3 Company, No 11 Battalion of KNU armed group, exchanged arms for peace at a Tatmadaw camp in Taninthayi Township on 3 January, bringing along with them one .30 carbine, one M-2 rifle, two magazines and 18 rounds of ammunition.

Commanding Officer Sai Nyunt and members Sai Lyan (a) Sai Ywet, Sai Than, Sai Lok, Sai La and Aik Sai of No 4 Battalion, Ywet Sit group of remaining MTA and SURA armed groups, together with four assorted arms, four magazines and 58 rounds of ammunition, exchanged arms for peace at a regional Tatmadaw camp in Tachilek Township on 13 January.

Officers of respective military camps welcomed them warmly and attended to the needs.

(13) Wall magazine of Insein District IPRD

YANGON, 28 Jan - Information and Public Relations Department has been carrying out the three tasks of information, entertainment and education.

A wall magazine of Insein District Information and Public Relations Department aimed at imparting knowledge to the public was unveiled at Yangon North District IPRD Office on Mingyi Road in Insein Township this morning.

Present were Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council and members, Assistant Director of IPRD Thura U Swe Win, Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council, EC members of District and Township Union Solidarity and Development Association, Principals of Basic Education High School No 1 and 2, teachers and students.

Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council formally unveiled the wall magazine.

Myanmar Perspectives, daily papers, weekly journals, articles, poems, documentary photos of Insein Township, cartoons and paintings are on display.

A similar ceremony was held in Shwepyitha Township IPRD office this morning.

Present were Assistant Director of IPRD Thura U Swe Win, Township USDA members, teachers and students. Staff Officer U Khin Aung of North District IPRD formally unveiled the wall magazine.
