(1) Summer paddy cultivation, purchase of paddy in Hmawby Township under way
YANGON, 12 Jan - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo met township departmental officials and gave instructions on cultivation of summer paddy, purchase of paddy and township development work in Hmawby Township today.
Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, together with Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and officials, arrived at the office of Hmawby Township Peace and Development Council at 1 pm.
They were welcomed there by Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint, division, district and township level officials of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Soe Lin and members and departmental officials.
The Secretary-2 was briefed by U Soe Lin on the target for summer paddy cultivation for 1997-98 in the township and progress of work, availability of water and fuel and other requirements.
Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Director of Yangon Division Irrigation Department U Tin Maung Win, Col Kyaw Tint and officials gave supplementary reports on purchase of paddy, progress of work in summer paddy cultivation, utilization of irrigated water and making field tours.
The Secretary-2 called on officials of the various departments to conduct field tours to see to it that farmers cultivate summer paddy on the prescribed acreage during the cultivation season.
He also spoke of the need for officials of District and Township Peace and Development Councils and the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation to attend to the. need of fuel and water for the farmers.
He called for raising momentum in purchase of paddy through the new system and regional development work.
In Yangon Division, a total of 210,000 acres are targeted to cultivate summer paddy in 1997-98, and to date, about 150,000 acres have been placed under summer paddy.
In Hmawby Township, 12,863 acres are targeted to place under summer paddy, and to date, 7,590 acres have been placed under summer paddy.

(2) Renovation of hostels for parade columns coordinated
YANGON, 12 Jan - A meeting on renovation of hostels for the 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day parade columns and competitors of military bands contest was held at the Saya San Hall in Kyaikkasan Grounds this evening, attended by Chairman of the 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day Observance Leading Committee Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Management Committee for Observance of the 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Acting Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Hlaing Win, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Vice-Quartermaster-General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint and senior military officers, heads of departments and guests.

(3) Minister inspects Myanmar Fritz Werner Industries Co
YANGON, 12 Jan - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, together with officials, arrived at Myanmar Fritz Werner Industries Co Ltd at No 6B, Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this afternoon.
They were welcomed there by Managing Director U Than Tun and directors.
The minister and party inspected production of toilet rolls at Wrapping Paper Mill of the Myanma Paper and Chemical Enterprise.
He looked into the arrangements for serving lunch to employees by the welfare society of the mill.
In the meeting hall U Than Tun reported on a brief account of Myanmar Fritz Werner Industries Co Ltd jointly formed by the Myanma Heavy Industries and Fritz Werner Company of Germany.
The minister attended to the requirements.

(4) Greening of arid regions in progress
YANGON, 12 Jan - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin supervised functions at a tropical crop research farm in NyaungU Township, Mandalay Division, yesterday.
Accompanied by officials, he stressed the need to strive for producing quality rice, groundnut, sesamum and beans and pulses.
At a fruit farm, he looked into the requirements of officials in planting plum and grape.
The minister then oversaw building of Weilaung Creek Dam near Weilaung Village, Taungtha Township, Myingyan District, urging officials to complete the project on time and meeting the required standards.
Officials briefed him on progress in building the dam.
The dam is included in Nine Arid Districts Greening Project in central Myanmar to boost irrigation, clean water supply, economy, health and social standards of the region
He inspected water storage, outlet canals and outlet structure at Sindewa Dam, which has a capacity to irrigate 3,800 acres.
In Kyaukpadaung Township, he attended to the needs in building small-scale dams to extend slope cultivation at Seiktain, Chaungma and Sanpya farms, stressing the need to set up model farms for the benefit of farmers.
The minister inspected strawberry, orange and papaya plantations in Popa Farm.
In Kyaukpadaung Townships he supervised building of the main dam, spillway and outlet conduit and concrete laying at Pin Creek Dam Project.

(5) Minister goes on inspection of MEB branches
YANGON, 12 Jan - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein visited the Myanma Economic Bank Branch in NyaungU on 10 January.
He met the staff and called on them to discharge their duties without delay and he fulfilled the requirements.
The minister and party proceeded to Kyaukpadaung and Chauk and inspected the MEB branches there.
They arrived Sagaing yesterday and met the staff of the MEB branch there.
At the Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Office later, they met Finance and Revenue employees of Sagaing and Monywa. The minister explained prevailing political, economic and social conditions in the country. He called on the employees to work harder to over fulfil the targets.
In the afternoon, the minister and party held a meeting with Finance and Revenue employees of PyinOoLwin area at the MEB Branch (1) in Mandalay.
The minister told them about the projects being implemented and urged them to fulfil the targets.
Next, he toured the bank and called for systematization of banking services and security at the work place.
Afterwards, the minister went to the Mandalay Division Internal Revenue Department and spoke of the need to collect revenues according to the rules.

(6) Minister inspects filling stations in Mandalay
YANGON, 12 Jan - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, accompanied by Managing Director of Myanma Petroleum Products Enterprise U Aung Hlaing and officials, arrived at Chanmyathazi Airport in Mandalay this morning.
He met employees and their families at Mandalay Yenan Yeiktha.
He also met personnel of Mandalay Division MPPE and Divisional Distribution and Sales Office and managers of filling stations in Mandalay.
General Manager of MPPE U Soe reported on set-up of Mandalay Division MPPE, office buildings, fuel tanks, security and fire prevention measures and availability and distribution of fuel and the divisional distribution and sales officer on daily distribution at fuel at filling stations in Mandalay Division and requirements.
The minister called on all to discharge their duties with sincerity and diligence.
He called for smooth dealings with the public, and urged officials to be systematic in keeping fuel in store and security and fire prevention measures.
Later, the minister inspected fuel storage and filling stations, and attended to the requirements.

(7) Collection of correct data on human resources vital for building modern, developed nation
YANGON, 12 Jan - Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, accompanied by Deputy Minister U Maung Aung, visited the Population Department on Maha Bandoola Street here this afternoon and met the staff.
He told them that the Population Department has been constituted as a new one to meet the requirements of the State. He spoke of the need to enumerate census based on age groups and different strata. All would be able to build a modern and developed nation only after compiling and collecting correct data on human resources, he said. He noted human resources development should be initiated on self-reliance.
He also spoke of the need to cooperate with friendly non-governmental organizations. He emphasized that it would be necessary to work in cooperation with UNFPA of the United Nations to compile and store data with the use of computers. He said the department would have to implement short-term and long-term plans and programmes through the combination of science and technology and human resources.
Speaking next, Deputy Minister U Maung Aung dealt with the organizational set-up, assignment of duties, use of computers and training of technicians.
The minister and the deputy minister clarified points asked by the staff.

(8) Industry-1 Minister inspects factories
YANGON, 12 Jan - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung supervised functions at a garment factory in Mayangon Township, this morning.
Accompanied by Deputy Minister U Thein Tun and officials, he heard a report on power of production machines, production capacity, distribution and welfare programmes of employees presented by the factory manager.
The minister stressed the need to strive to boost production and to apply innovative and cooperative means.
Later, he inspected weaving division, dyeing division, colour control division, finishing division and designing division.
At an adhesive tape and bandage factory, he looked into the requirements presented by officials.
He inspected production divisions and urged officials to keep the factory clean and to take fire prevention and safety measures.

(9) Minister for Mines tours northern Shan State
YANGON, 12 Jan - Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint inspected the mines and mills of the ministry in northern Shan State from 9 January till today.
On 9 January, he arrived at Namtu Metal Refinery of No 1 Mining Enterprise and inspected various sections and workshops.
He toured Bawdwin Mines on 10 January and inspected ore mining, refinery, mechanical workshop and ventilators.
Meeting officials at respective mines, the minister instructed them to work hard for exceeding the 1997-98 production targets and prevent loss and wastage.
He also presented bonuses to workers and personnel.
The minister toured the basic mining on-job training school at Namtu on yesterday and Manhsan Hydro-Electric Power Station of No 1 Mining Enterprise today.

(10) Minister tours Mandalay Division
YANGON, 12 Jan - CEC member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone together with officials, visited Meikhtila District in Mandalay, Division from 9 to 11 January.
The minister inspected function of USDA and work of department under the ministry.
Then, he gave instructions to officials.
