( 1 ) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Vietnam

Yangon, 2 Sept - On the occasion of the 57th Anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, which falls on 2 September 2002, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, has sent messages of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Tran Duc Luong, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and to His Excellency Mr Phan Van Khai, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

( 2 ) Secretary-1 inspects construction of Yangon West University in Htantabin Township, Fame Pharmaceutical Factory in Hlinethaya Industrial Zone

Yangon, 1 Sept - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office inspected construction of Yangon West University in Htantabin Township and development of Hlinethaya Industrial Zone this afternoon.

Secretary-1 arrived at the construction site of Yangon West University. He was welcomed by Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe, the ministers and the deputy ministers and departmental officials. Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt reported on management affairs of Yangon West University. Minister U Than Aung gave a supplementary report. Managing Director of Wa Wa Win Construction Co U Shwe Hlaing reported on the scale model of archway of the university and construction of lecture halls. Deputy Director-General of Irrigation Department U Khin Zaw reported on measures undertaken for proper drainage, Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe on transport arrangements for students and faculty members and Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt on construction of gravel road on Hlinethaya-Htantabin Road section.

The Secretary-1 then gave instructions on planting of windbreak and Thitseint trees. The Secretary-1 and party inspected extended lecture hall-6 under construction and gave instructions. The Secretary-1 and party arrived at Fame Pharmaceutical Factory at the corner of Mingyi Maha Minkhaung Road and Nawadei Road in Hlinethaya Industrial Zone No 3. They were welcomed by Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and officials of Fame Pharmaceutical Co. Managing Director Dr Khin Maung Lwin reported on background history of the factory, area, strength of staff, investment, the factory, products of the factory and research at the first phase, production of western medicines at the second phase, cooperation of international pharmaceutical companies and winning of prizes on pharmaceutical production.

Next, Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo reported on assistance to be provided by the Ministry of Health and Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Kyaw Win on cooperation of Fame Pharmaceutical Co and the Ministry of Industry-1 and tasks to be carried out. In his address, the Secretary-1 said he, the ministers, the deputy ministers and officials came to the zone to inspect the development of Hlinethaya Industrial Zone and fulfil the requirements. The Fame Pharmaceutical Co is now systematically producing traditional medicines with the use of modern techniques in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry-1 and the Ministry of Livestock Breeding and Fisheries. Efficacious traditional medicines have been widely used for many years in eastern countries including Myanmar. He said the government gave encouragement to production of efficacious traditional medicines according to its standard set and boosting production of high quality medicines. Therefore, Myanmar traditional medicines have become popular and they are now widely used, he said.

He called on private pharmaceutical entrepreneurs to produce efficacious traditional medicines, to conduct research, to extend their business and make efforts for successful penetration of foreign market. The Secretary-1 inspected medicated honey room, natural honey filling room, honey pasteurizing room, capsule filling rooms 1 and II and capsule polishing room, mixing room, labelling and packaging room, final packaging room, washing room, drying room, delivery staff, quality control unit, professional library, herbal processing, water treatment room and raw materials warehouse on the ground floor and first floor of the factory. The Secretary-1 and party were conducted round the factory by Managing Director Dr Khin Maung Lwin and Production Manager Daw Mya Mya Thein.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected herbal plantation in the factory compound, warehouses and honey cafeteria. The Fame Pharmaceutical Co in cooperation with Myanmar Pharmaceutical Factory produces bottle of provimin, provimin blister, vitazone elixer, mezincal, TZ balm, bandage, cotton wool, spirit, real mouth wash and vinegar. The company also produces pure natural honey, citric honey, garlic honey, ginger honey, special honey for women, asparagus honey, ginseng honey, tinospora cordifolia honey and licorice honey in cooperation with beekeeping unit of the Ministry of Livestock Breeding and Fisheries. Moreover, it produces Ganocan, Immugin, Tiloflam, Neurogin, Bee pollen, Spirulina honey, Glucose powder Clove mouth wash and Ganogesic balm.

The Secretary-1 and party went to Myanmar ELE Steel Industries in Industrial Zone No 1. They inspected production of steel beam, purlin, rafter, iron sheets, iron grille, and steel pipes. They were conducted round by Managing Director U Kyaw Pe and officials. Next, Managing Director U Kyaw Pe reported on production of steel items and future tasks. In his discussions, the Secretary-1 said national entrepreneurs are striving for progress of work in the combination with their experience and technology. He called on ELE Co boost production of high quality import-substitute goods and to seek foreign markets. The government would provide necessary assistance to the entrepreneurs.

The Secretary-1 and party left Hlinethaya Industrial Zone in the evening.

( 4 ) Merit-sharing ceremony of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee's meeting hall and library held

Yangon, 1 Sept - The merit-sharing ceremony of the meeting hall of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and the new building of Pitakattaik was held at the Pitakattaik on Thirimingala Kaba Aye Hill this morning.

First, the ceremony was opened with the three-time recitation of Namo Tassa and Vice-Chairman Myitkyina Sayadaw administered Five Precepts to the congregation and recited the parittas. Minister U Aung Khin supplicated on the purpose of the donations. Then, the minister and wife handed over the documents related to the Pitakattaik Kyaungsaung to Myitkyina Sayadaw.

The deputy minister and wife presented offertories to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangaha. Secretary Magway Sayadaw delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained and the ceremony ended with the three-time recitation of Buddha Sasanam Ciranthithatu. Then, "soon" was offered to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha.

Waso Golf Tournament held

Yangon, 1 Sept - Under the patronage of Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein and Deputy Minister Professor Dr Mya Oo, Waso Golf Tournament of the Golfers Association of Myanmar Medical Association was held at Myanmar Golf Club at 9th Mile at 6 am today. Altogether 88 golfers participated in the tournament sponsored by Wincal Pharmacetural Co Ltd, Fortune International Ltd and Concordia International Co Ltd. After the tournament, President of the Golfers Association of MMA Dr Khin Maung Aye explained matters related to the competing teams. The minister presented prizes to the winners.

Bronze busts of artistes opened

Yangon, 1 Sept - Minister for Culture U Tin Winn attended a ceremony to open the bronze busts of Alinka Kyawswa Daw Saw Mya Aye Kyi and Liberty Daw Mya Yin held at Mandalay National Theatre yesterday morning.

The minister formally opened the ceremony and made a speech. He said preservation of cultural heritage and propagation of fine arts were being given priority in the time of the State Peace and Development Council. University of Culture (Yangon) and (Mandalay) had been opened for the propagation of fine arts. Traditional cultural performing arts competitions had been held every year for the emergence of talented artistes.

Secretariat member of USDA attends opening of new building of rural health centre in Loikaw

 Yangon, 1 Sept - Secretariat member of Union Solidarity and Development Association U Khin Maung Thein, accompanied by Central Executive Committee members U Than Shwe and Brig-Gen Thein Aung, Chairman of Kayah State Peace and Development Council Col Thein Swe, Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung attended opening ceremony of new building of rural health centre of Pankan Village in Loikaw Township yesterday morning.

 

Secretary of Kayah State USDA U Kyaw Swe and Kayah State medical officer Dr Tin Win Kyaw and local resident opened the new building for rural health centre by cutting a ribbon .Next, Secretariat of USDA U Khin Maung Thein presented cash for the rural health centre to a local resident. Then CEC member U Than Shwe accepted USDA membership applications presented by organizer of Pankan village tract U Pauksi.

Next, the secretariat member and party attended opening of the new school building in Htaythama Village. Afterwards, Secretariat member U Khin Maung Thein explained matters relating to development of rural agriculture and livestock breeding, promotion of education, improvement of health standard, water supply in rural areas, smooth and secure transport and future tasks of USDA.

Next, CEC member Brig-Gen Thein Aung delivered an address at the ceremony and Secretariat U Khin Maung Thein donated stationery to the students. The headmistress Daw Rosy Kay spoke words of thanks.

Billboard put up to hail USDA Meeting

Yangon, 1 Sept - Hailing the Annual General Meeting (2002) of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, a ceremony to put up a billboard was held at the Junction of Yangon-Mandalay highway and No 3 highway in Mingaladon Township, Yangon (North District) this morning.

It was attended by Chairman of the Organizing Group of the Information Sub-committee of the meeting Managing Director of Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise U Bo Kyi, executive committee member of Yangon Division USDA U Tin Maung Win, executive committee member of Yangon (North) District USDA U Zaw Win Tun, secretaries and executives of Hlegu Township and Mingaladon Township USDAs, local authorities, departmental officials, members of social organizations, students and people totalling over 1,000. Executive committee member of Yangon Division USDA U Tin Maung Win and Chairman U Myint Swe of Hlegu Township Peace and Development Council formally unveiled the billboard.

( 5 ) Dispensary and a labour room opened in Kyimyindine Township

 Yangon, 1 Sept - A dispensary and a labour room were opened in Seikkyi U Mya Ngazin Ward on the other side of Hlaing river in Kyimyindine Township this morning, attended by Patron of Yangon Division Union Solidarity and Development Association Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe.

Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe explained construction of the dispensary and labour room in Kyimyindine Township by Yangon Division USDA in accord with the guidance of the Head of State on implementation of five rural development tasks and future tasks on development of wards on the other side of Hlaing River. CEC member of the USDA Yangon Division in-charge Col Maung Pa presented certificates of honour to the donors who contributed donations. Chairman of Kyimyindine Township Peace and Development Council U Tin Win handed over related documents to Deputy Minister Professor Dr Kyaw Myint.

Next, organizer of USDA in Seikkyi U Mya Ngazin Ward U Thein Zaw thanked for construction of the dispensary and labour room. Afterwards, the commander formally unveiled the signboard of the dispensary and labour room. The commander, the deputy minister and the vice-mayor formally opened the dispensary and labour room and inspected them. The dispensary and labour room were constructed at a cost of K 2.1 million under the arrangement of Yangon Division USDA. The commander and party inspected lakes for drinking water in Sethsan Ward.

The commander and party presented offertories to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Visada of Aung Mingala Kyaungtaik. The commander and party inspected construction of new building for basic education primary school in Sethsan Ward and met departmental officials, members of USDA, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, members of Women's Affairs Work Committee, Red Cross and Fire Brigade and local people. Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Tin Win reported on measures undertaken for development of wards and villages, Col Maung Pa on water supply for those wards and villages, Deputy Minister Dr Kyaw Myint on fulfillment for development of health sector and donor U Kyaw Khin on donation of the new building.

The commander spoke at length on measures to be undertaken for development of education, health, transport, water supply and economic development sectors, the government's 30-year education objectives and national development.

Commander attends ceremony to mark completion of ploughing in Taunggyi Township

Yangon, 1 Sept - A ceremony to mark the completion of ploughing was held in conjunction with the monsoon paddy transplanting contest and the get-together for local farmers at the monsoon paddy model plantation in Shwenyaung Village-tract in Taunggyi Township, Shan State, on 29 August morning.

Commander Brig-Gen Khin Maung Myint and Taunggyi Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Hla Nay formally opened the paddy transplanting contest and watched the contest. Then, the commander inspected display of farm implements including power tillers, making natural and bio fertilizer and shops of agricultural equipment. At the briefing hall, Taunggyi Township Chairman U Hla Nay reported on work being carried out in agricultural undertakings and requirements to the commander who attended to the needs. Then, the commander gave instructions on cooperating with the public, extension of agricultural undertakings, using advanced agricultural methods and minimizing the loss and wastage. Then, the prize presentation ceremony followed.

Next, the commander and officials presented prizes and cash awards to prize winning teams. In the afternoon, the commander and party inspected Ayethaya Dam in Taunggyi where Assistant Director of Irrigation Department U Myo Win reported on construction of the dam and condition of irrigation to the commander who attended to the needs. The dam can irrigate 350 acres of land in summer and 600 acres of land in the rainy season.

Regional development tasks in Rakhine State inspected

Yangon, 1 Sept - Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western Command Brig-Gen Maung Oo, accompanied by officials concerned, inspected construction of Kinpon Bridge in Gwa Township on 28 August morning.

At the briefing hall, Junior Engineer U Myint Htwe reported on work being carried out for the project to the commander, who fulfilled the requirements. The Commander also gave instructions on meeting the set standard and worksite safety to officials. On 29 August morning, the commander presented books on Tripitaka Treaties donated by Maha-saddhammajotika Dhaja U Goenka and offertories to Presiding Sayadaw of Myoma Wayluwun Pariyatti Sarthintaik Bhaddanta Kuvera after receiving the Five Precepts from the Sayadaw at the Kyaungtaik. Then, the Sayadaw delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained.

Then, the commander met with Rakhine State/district/township level departmental officials at the meeting hall of Thandwe District Peace and Development Council Office and gave instructions on rural development tasks and farming undertakings. Afterwards, Rakhine State level departmental officials reported on work being carried out for regional development in their respective regions to the commander who fulfilled the needs.

Next, the commander attended the ceremony to present teaching aids to the high/middle/primary schools in Thandwe Township held at Dwarawady Hall in Thandwe. Chairman of Thandwe District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Than reported on work being carried out for uplifting the education standard in the district. Then, the commander accepted K 1.41 million and 9 sets of computer donated by wellwishers, departments and companies.

Next, officials concerned accepted cash, TV sets, Video deck and others donated by wellwishers. Then, Commander Brig-Gen Maung Oo spoke words of thanks and the ceremony came to a close.

Multi-media classrooms of Meza BEHS (Branch) open

 Yangon, 1 Sept - The opening ceremony of Myanmar Education Goal stone inscriptions and multi-media classrooms of Meza Basic Education High School (Branch), Indaw Township, Katha District, Sagaing Division, was held at the branch school on 28 August.

After the ceremony, Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Brig-Gen Soe Naing inspected the multi-media classrooms, made a speech and donated cash. Multi-media classrooms were already opened at 93 basic education schools in Sagaing Division. Then, the commander went to Meza monastic education school where he presented offertories to the Sayadaw and donated exercise books and pencils to 301 students.

( 6 ) Provisions donated to monasteries in Yangon

Yangon, 1 Sept - The ceremony to donate provisions to Kwinchaung, Aung Mingala, Jotana Yama, Saddhamma Wunthayon, Pariyatti and Jabuyadana Pariyatti monasteries in Ahlon Township, Yangon West District was held at the Sasana Hitakari Kwinchaung Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Hsinmin Ward this afternoon. It was attended by Sasanadhaja Siripavara Dhammacariya Maha Gan-thavacaka Pandita Sayadaw Bhaddanta Tejavamta of Kwinchaung Sarthintaik and Sayadaws, Chief of Staff (Navy) Rear-Admiral Soe Thein, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun and senior military officers, departmental heads, chairmen of Yangon West District and township Peace and Development Councils, members of social organizations and others. Chief of Staff (Navy) Rear Admiral Soe Thein, the deputy minister and senior military officers presented provisions to the Sayadaws. On behalf of families of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air), the Chief of Staff (Navy), Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Colonel General Staff (Air) Col Ye Chit Pe offered provisions to the Sayadaws.

Then, Sayadaws accepted the donations made by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the YCDC, Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, Yangon West District and township Peace and Development Councils, Myanma Timber Enterprise (Head Office), the Ministry of Electrical Power, the Auditor-General's Office, Myanma Salt and Marine Chemicals Enterprise, the Indigenous Medicine Department, Hman Cho medical house, Htet Lin medical house, Kay Thi Pan medial house, Kyaw indigenous medicine, Htun Shwe Wa medical house, the medical houses in the township, Myanmar Rice Wholesalers Association, OK rice trading, Myanmar and Yangon Division Fisheries Federation, Township Cooperative Department, Furniture Factory Nos 1, 2 and 3, township Union Solidarity and Development Association and Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Sandhi medical house.

Then, Presiding Sayadaw of Kwinchaung Sarthintaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Rajainda delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained. Then, the ceremony came to a close. Today's donations included 290 bags of rice, 98 viss of edible oil, 700 viss of iodized salt, 70 bottles of fine salt, 1,621 bottles of medicine, 162 viss of beans and pulses, and K 4,202,050. A similar ceremony was held at the hall of Aung Pariyatti Sarthintaik monastic school on Bogyoke Aung San Road in Ward 3, Hlinethaya Township this afternoon, to present provisions to Aung Pariyatti, Thayagon, Sasana Hita, Thaunggyi, Akyaw, Okkantha Yama Shwe Kyaung Sarthintaiks in Hlinethaya Township, Yangon North District. Presiding Sayadaw of Okkantha Yama Shwe Kyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Suceiddha Nyana administered the Five Precepts to the congregation.

Chief of Staff (Navy) Rear Admiral Soe Thein, the Vice Quartermaster-General and senior military officers presented provisions to the Sayadaws. On behalf of families of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air), the Chief of Staff (Navy), Director Brig-Gen Aung Thein of Directorate of Resettlement and Colonel General Staff (Air) Col Ye Chit Pe offered provisions to the Sayadaws. Col General Staff (Air) Col Ye Chit Pe explained the purposes of the donations. Then, Presiding Sayadaw of Thayagon Pariyatti Sarthin-taik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Tejavamta delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained. Then the ceremony came to a close. Today's donations included 223 bags of rice, 101 viss of edible oil, 400 viss of iodized salt, 37 bottles of fine salt, 1,446 bottles of medicine, 112 viss of beans and pulses and K 1,506,050.

( 7 ) CCDAC Joint-Secretary visits Shwepyitha Youth Training Camp

Yangon, 1 Sept - The group led by Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Joint-Secretary Police Col Kham Aung visited Shwepyitha Youth Training Camp in Wethtikan, Pyay Township in Bago Division (West) yesterday morning.

The group comprised Adviser (Drugs & HIV/AIDS) Dr Moruf Adelekan of the UN International Drug Abuse Control Programme Office and party from Vienna, who arrived here to review performance of the UNDCP in Myanmar, Resident Representative Mr Jean-Luc Lemahieu and officials of UNDCP in Yangon, officials from the Health Planning Department, the Social Welfare Department, NGOs, Myanmar Anti-Narcotic Association and the Border Area Development Association. The CCDAC Joint-Secretary and party arrived at the camp at 12.30 pm where Deputy Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Brig-Gen Zaw Win and officials welcomed them. At the hall of the camp, the joint-secretary explained to the guests history and objectives of the camp.

Camp In-charge Police Maj Lein Ohn briefed them on structure and tasks of the camp, and officials from SWD on procedures of youth training. The guests raised queries and Dr Ba Thaung of Yangon Psychiatric Hospital and officials concerned replied to them. The guests were conducted around the camp by Psychiatrist Dr Tin Tin Phyu of Yangon Psychiatric Hospital.

After having souvenir photos taken, the group left there for Yangon in the afternoon.

( 8 ) Tachilek District wins four-district U-17 football championship shield

Yangon, 1 Sept - The final match and prize-presentation ceremony of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Chairman's Shield four-district U-17 football tournament was held at Myoma ground in Keng Tung on 28 August afternoon. It was attended by Chairman of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Commander of Triangle Region Command Brig-Gen Khin Zaw and senior military officers, local authorities, departmental officials, members of social organizations, students and fans. After the match, officials presented prizes to victorious teams and individual athletes. The commander presented the championship shield to Tachilek District team and the ceremony came to a close.

( 9 ) Drug dealer sentenced

Yangon, 1 Sept - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Railway Police Force, acting on information, seized Ba Kyaw with 71.5 grams of heroin on No 4/5 platform at Mandalay Station at 1:35 pm on 20 March 2002. In connection with the case, action was taken against Ba Kyaw, 34, son of U Aung Tha of Nant Nying Village, Bamauk Township under Section 15/19 (A) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Mandalay Railway Police Station. Mandalay District Court handed down 12 years' imprisonment on him on 3 June 2002 under Section 19 (A).

Heroin and stimulant tablets seized

Yangon, 1, Sept - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Yangon Special Anti-drug Squad, acting on a tip-off, searched the house of Kalagyi (a) Htay Aung, son of U Myint Oo of No 105 , building No-2, Banyadala Street, Aung Mingala Ward, Tamway Township and seized 5.916 grams of heroin.

Action is being taken against Kalagyi (a) Htay Aung, 40, and his accomplice Soe Nyunt, 35, son of U Thaung of No 49, Mogaung Pagoda Street, Ward-14, Yankin Township under Section 15/19 (A)/21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Tamway Police Station.

Similarly, a combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myitkyina Special Anti-drug Squad, acting on information, seized LaPai Zaw Pon, 25, son of U John Zaw Hsai of Ward-4, Hsenwi with 19744 stimulant tablets. Action is being taken against him under Section 15/19(A) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Phakant Police Station.
