Yangon, 23 July - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Mohamed Hosni Mubarak, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, on the occasion of the National Day of the Arab Republic of Egypt which falls on 23 July 2002.

Yangon, 22 July - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe accepted the credentials of newly-accredited Ambassador of the Republic of India Mr Rajiv Kumar Bhatia at Zeyathiri Beikman, Konmyinttha at 10 am today.

( 3 ) Leading Committee for Organizing Conference on Myanmar- Malaysia Economic Opportunities and Technical Cooperation meets

Yangon, 22 July - The Leading Committee for Organizing the Conference on Myanmar-Malaysia Economic Opportunities and Technical Cooperation held its first meeting in the meeting hall of Zeya Thiri Beikman on Kon-myinttha this evening. Chairman of the Leading Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the meeting.

The Secretary-1 said that a conference on Myanmar-Malaysia Economic Opportunities and Technical Cooperation will soon be held in Myanmar. As the conference is of significance and importance, the Leading Committee comprising the ministers concerned has been formed to hold it successfully. In addition, the Work Committee for Organizing the Conference has been set up as well. Minister Brig-Gen Abel will chair the work committee, and instructions have been given to take necessary measures. Malaysia and Myanmar have been engaged in the economic and technical cooperation programmes; the study of economic and technical development in Myanmar needs to be included in the schedule. Then, the Secretary-1 urged those present to put forward measures taken by ministries concerned for the Conference and matters to be taken care of by Yangon City Development Committee.

Afterwards, Chairman of the Work Committee Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel reported on the tentative programme of the Conference, matters to be discussed sector wise and the list of resource persons from Myanmar and Malaysia and formation of subcommittees. Joint Secretary of YCDC U Kyi Win reported on the Yangon City development project to be implemented in cooperation with Malaysia. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the Secretary-1.

Yangon, 23 July - On the occasion of the National Day of the Arab Republic of Egypt, which falls on 23 July 2002, U Win Aung, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Ahmed Maher El Sayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt.

( 5 ) Coop Minister meets with officials of township coop societies

Yangon, 22 July - Minister for Cooperatives Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe attended a meeting held at the Dhammayon of the ministry on Kyadawya Street, Bahan Township this afternoon.

At the meeting, he met with officials and gave instructions on development of cooperative societies. The meeting was also attended by the director-general of the Cooperative Department, the director-general of the Cottage Industries Department, the managing director of Cooperative Exports and Imports Enterprise, the chairman of Central Cooperative Society, and officials of cooperative societies from 13 townships. Speaking on the occasion, the minister said in accord with the cooperatives aim, efforts are to be made to reach the goal. The Cooperatives Syndicate and other societies should coordinate together for the progress of the tasks of fundamental cooperative societies, he said.

Then, officials reported to the minister on formation of the society and future tasks. After Deputy Director of the Cooperative Department U Sein Win reported on tasks of district cooperative societies, chairmen of societies from 13 townships also made reports on future tasks. The directors-general then gave suggestions to the reports and the minister made concluding remarks.

Minister looks over preparations for opening Smart School at basic education schools

Yangon, 22 July - Minister for Education U Than Aung looked over the preparations of basic education schools for opening the Smart School in Kamayut Township and Hline Township this afternoon.

At first, the minister arrived at No 2 Basic Education Primary School in Kamayut Township where he was welcomed by Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and U Myo Nyunt, directors-general of the departments under the ministry, departmental officials, the headmistress and teachers. Then, the minister and party inspected the preparations relating to Smart School there. Headmistress Daw Kathy Soe Thein and teachers reported on arrangements for giving lecture programme of the Smart School and the minister gave necessary instructions. The minister and party proceeded to University of Education Practising School in Hline Township, and inspected the preparations for opening the Smart School.

The minister heard reports on the lecture programme of the Smart School by Rector of University of Education (Yangon) Dr Khin Zaw and officials, Headmistress Daw Khin Win Aung and teachers. The minister gave instructions on opening of the Smart School.

Dagon Soft Drinks and Ice Factory, Win Thuza Shop inspected

Yangon, 22 July - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, at Dagon Soft Drinks and Ice Factory of Myanma Foodstuff Industries on U Wisara Road in Sangyoung Township at 8 am today.

The minister gave instructions on tasks to be carried out in accord with international standard and techniques. Then, the minister and party inspected production of tinned Fantasy, Fruito, Fantasy Orange and Sparkling soft drinks and packaging machines. At the briefing hall, Factory Manager U Myint Soe reported on production and distribution, installation of new machines, availability of raw materials and stockpile. Managing Director U Kyaw Myint of Myanma Foodstuff Industries reported on the change in the design of tinned soft drinks.

The minister gave instructions on boosting promotion of import-substitute soft drinks, distribution of products to the markets at reasonable price, meeting of consumers' demand and innovative matters. Afterwards, the minister and party inspected sales of Hanthawady Win Thuza Shop in Sangyoung Township and gave necessary instructions.

Minister inspects livestock breeding, fisheries tasks in Mandalay Division

Yangon, 22 July - Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, arrived at Myabayin condensed milk factory which can produce 7,000 viss of condensed milk a day, in Yesu ward, Kyaukse Township, on 19 July morning.

The minister and party inspected production process and drain for waste water and the minister gave necessary instructions. Then, the minister and party proceeded to Mandalay Division Fish Breeding Farm-2 in Kume, Myittha Township. Officials reported on breeding ponds and cultivation of vegetables in the farm compound. The minister inspected fish delivery camp and nursery ponds of fish fry. In the afternoon, they arrived at Yezin fish breeding farm in Pyinmana Township. After hearing reports, the minister gave instructions on production of fingerlings, breeding technology to be conducted to local breeders and efforts to be made for exceeding the target of fingerlings production. Yesterday morning, the minister attended the ceremony to set fingerlings free into Chindwin River at Kyaukhsaung Jetty on the Strand Road in Monywa. Altogether 5.1 million finger-lings and fish fry were freed into the river.

Afterwards, the minister inspected poultry farming tasks of private breeders in Monywa Township and attended to their needs. In the afternoon, the minister saw over the fish breeding ponds of North-West Command and the poultry farms near Monywa-YeU Road. This morning, the minister inspected Patheingyi Poultry Farm in Patheingyi Township. Next, the minister met service personnel of departments and enterprises under the ministry in Mandalay at the hall of Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department in Pyigyidagun Township.

Workshop on Human Rights and Responsibilities opened

Yangon, 22 July - The Workshop on Human Rights and Responsibilities took place in Mandalay from 22 to 26 July. The opening ceremony of the workshop was held at Mandalay Swan Hotel on this morning. Present on the occasion were Chairman of the Myanmar Human Rights Committee Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Patron of Mandalay Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association Supervisory Committee Daw Myat Ngwe, Australian Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Trevor Wilson and 25 officials of the ministries concerned and Non-Governmental Organizations. The workshop is being held with the support of Aus AID.

( 6 ) USDA CEC member meets USDA members in Magway

Yangon, 22 July - Member of Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, went to the USDA office in Aunglan Township on 20 July and met with secretaries and executives of Thayet, Aunglan, Kanma, Mindon, Hsinpaungwe and Minhla townships associations. 6,000 membership applications from six townships in Thayet District were presented by respective township secretaries and executives of the association.

Then, the CEC member went to the USDA office of Taungdwingyi Township, where he encouraged trainees of the computer course being conducted by the association. Next, he heard reports of township secretaries and executives on rural development undertakings and gave instructions on work programmes to be carried out by the association for rural development tasks. On 21 July, the CEC member, together with the chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council, arrived at the USDA office of Magway Division, where he met with district secretaries and executives of the association. Later, Minister for NPED U Soe Tha went to the Planning Department in Magway Division, where he met with department staff and gave instructions on work programmes to be implemented in accord with the 2002-2003 targeted plans.

The minister also went to the construction site of USDA office in Minbu District and the Planning Department of Minbu District. The CEC member then attended a membership application presentation ceremony. 2,640 membership applications from basic education high schools and basic education middle schools in Salin Township were presented by member student representatives.

Then, the minister fulfilled the requirements for the extended construction of school buildings and inspected the multimedia classrooms in the basic education high school in Salin Township.

( 7 )  Commander attends consecration ceremony of Kohtatgyi Pagoda

Yangon, 22 July - A ceremony to consecrate Atula Dhipati Maha Munisacca Kohtatgyi Pagoda was held in conjunction with the first Waso robes offering ceremony in Sangyoung Township, Yangon West District, this morning. Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe attended the ceremonies and offered Waso robes and alms.

Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe arrived at the pagoda at 6.45 am and offered flowers, water and lights. Chairman of the Committee for All-round Renovation of Kohtatgyi Pagoda Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein reported on the history of the pagoda and renovation tasks. The commander gave instructions on the upkeep of the pagoda and offered Shwethingan to the pagoda. The Waso robe offering ceremony was held at Thandithukha Dhammayon of the pagoda. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kesara administered the Five Precepts to the congregation, and the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited the Parittas.

The commander and officials offered Waso robes and alms to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha. Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Bhaddanta Kumara delivered a sermon, followed by the sharing of merits.

Ayeyawady Naval Region Command HQ offer Waso robes

Yangon, 22 July - Under the patronage of Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Kyi Min and wife Daw Aye Aye, the family of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters held its 50th Waso robe offering ceremony at Mararizaya Yanmyoaung Dhammayon of the headquarters this morning.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Ganda Malar Bhivamsa administered the Five Precepts to the congregation. Then, the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited the Parittas. Afterwards, the officials offered Waso robes and alms to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Ganda Malar Bhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by the sharing of merits.

Waso robes offered to members of the Sangha in Kunlon, Hopang and Mongmao regions

Yangon, 22 July - Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command Brig-Gen Myint Hlaing and officials inspected maintenance of HsenwiKunlon Road on 20 July. The commander then attended the fifth Waso robes offering ceremony of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races at Parami Dipani Hall of Mya Thein Tan Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Hopang.

Waso robes were offered to members of the Sangha in Kunlon, Hopang and Mongmao regions. The congregation received the Five Precepts from member of the Central Working Committee of the Sangha Gandhavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Sobhita. Members of the Sangha then recited the Metta Sutta. The commander presented 13 sets of Waso robes for members of the Sangha in Mongmao region to Sayadaw Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Bhaddanta Silabala and 50 bags of rice and offertories for Mya Thein Tan Pariyatti Sarthintaik.

The commander presented K 1 million for Mya Thein Tan Missionary Pariyatti Sarthintaik to member of the Board of Trustees U Thein Lwin, and Tactical Operations Commander Col Sein Win; wellwishers, Waso robes and offertories to members of the Sangha and novices in Namtip, Nawee, Kunlon and Hopang regions. Member of Shan State Working Committee of the Sangha Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Bhaddanta Silabala delivered a sermon, followed by the sharing of merits. At 10.30 am, the commander met departmental officials, service personnel, members of War Veterans Organization, the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Fire Brigades and social organizations at Hopang Township Peace and Development Council Office. Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Myint Soe reported on development of the township.

Chairman of District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Soe Win gave a supplementary report. The commander called for concerted efforts for regional development. The commander observed cultivation of hybrid paddy and pepper plantations in the township. He discussed food sufficiency, boosting per-acre yield and rural development tasks. The commander inspected construction of a two-storey building of affiliated Namslat Village Basic Education High School in Hsenwi Township.

( 8 ) Myanmar-China goodwill volleyball tournament begins

Yangon, 22 July - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint attended the first match of Myanmar-China goodwill volleyball tournament at the National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna this evening. Present were Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Aung Thein Lin, members of panel of patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation, officials of the Ministry of Sports and Myanmar Volleyball Federation and Embassy of the People's Republic of China, guests and sports fans. General Secretary of MOC Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik, Counsellor Mr Tang Ying of the PRC embassy, President of MVF U Tun Myint Naing and captain of Chinese volleyball team greeted the players. National B team of the PRC beat selected team of MVF 3-2. On 25 July, combined team of MVF will play against the national B team of the PRC.

A&I, Shan Yoma, MPF teams stand first in National Basketball Championship Tournament

Yangon, 22 July - Organized by Myanmar Basketball Federation, the match for third place and the final match of National Championship Basketball Tournament 2002 was held at Kyaikkasan Gymnasium at 9 am today. Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and officials, In the final match of senior men's division, Agriculture and Irrigation team beat Swam Swam team 82-58 and stood first while Yangon Command team stood third.

Shan Yoma team edged Shadows team 72-67 and came in first in the final match of U-20 men's division, and LSK team stood third. In women's event, Myanmar Police Force team stood first while Agriculture and Irrigation and Yangon Command teams stood second and third respectively. Maung Maung Myint of A&I team in senior men's division, Pyi Phyo Lwin of Shadows team in U-20 men's division and Aye Ma Ma Myo of MPF team in women's event took away best defender awards. Likewise, best rebounder awards went to Win Aung of A&I team in senior men's division, Khun Toe Nyi of Shan Yoma team in U-20 men's division and Mya Hnin Htwe of MPF team in women's round match respectively. Most valuable player awards were fetched by Zaw Naing Htwe of Swam Swam team in senior men's division, Nyi Nyi Aung of Shan Yoma team in U-20 men's division, and Win Min Mya of MPF team in women's round match. Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint presented championship trophies to the winning teams.

Commander presents prizes to winners in Sepak Takraw & Chinlon Tournaments

Yangon, 22 July - The final matches and the prize presentation ceremony of the Yangon Command Commander's Shield Sepak Takraw Tournament and Chinlon Tourney were held at the Hline Gymnasium this morning, attended by Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe.

First, the commander and party watched the final matches of the sepak takraw event. At the prize presentation ceremony, No 2 Military Region Commander Col Tin Oo Lwin, No 3 Military Region Commander Col Yan Naing Oo, No 1 Military Region Commander Col Khin Maung Soe and No 4 Military Region Commander Brig-Gen Myo Myint presented prizes to respective winners and winning teams. Then, Chairman of Yangon Command Sepak Takraw Event Supporting Committee Lt-Col Tin Kyaing presented gifts to referees of MSTF. On behalf of MSTF, Referee U Tin Win presented sports gears and chinlons to Lt-Col Tin Kyaing.

Later, the commander presented the championship trophy and the championship shield to No 1 Transit Centre chinlon team and No 16 Infantry Regiment sepak takraw team respectively.

Myanmar, Chinese youths to meet at soccer friendly

Yangon, 22 July - The Myanmar youth-A soccer team and the Chinese youth team will meet in the friendly soccer match at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna at 4 pm on 23 July. The Chinese youth team is formed mostly with players of the team who passed the Asian Soccer Qualifier held in Singapore in March 2002. In the qualifier, the Myanmar youth and the Chinese youth drew 1-1. The Chinese youth passed the qualifier due to scoring one more goal than the Myanmar youth because the Chinese youth beat host Singapore 2-0 and the Myanmar youth beat Singapore 1-0.

( 9 ) 2,450 stimulant tablets seized

Yangon, 22 July - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on a tip-off, searched Arkyo, son of U Wunse of Ward 12, Hsenwi Road, Lashio and Zaw Win (a) Sein Hla, son of U Thaung of No 141, Aung Chantha Ward, Shukhintha Road, Taungyi, at Wuntan Ward, Monghsu Gem Land, Monghsu, Shan State (South), on 9 July and seized 2,450 stimulant tablets from them. Action is being taken against them by the police station concerned under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
