( 8 ) Two Myanmars who escaped enslavement of Yodaya helmsman arrive back Yangon safely
Two were subject to abusive language, kicks, punches, boiling-water splashes and whips of Yodayas even for small mistake
Malaysian ship rescues them while drifting in sea for about three days

Yangon, 17 July - Two Myanmar sailors working on board a trawler of Yodaya were rescued by a Malaysian ship in July while drifting in the sea for about three days. The two Myanmars, Aung Myo Htwe (a) Pha Le, 22, son of U Maung Shwe, and Kyaw Win Tun, 19, son of U Hse Bya, jumped off the trawler as they could not bear the tortures inflicted on them by Yodaya sailors of the fishing boat while working on it in July.

The Malaysian ship safely transported them to Singapore. With the help of the Myanmar Embassy in Singapore and the Red Cross, they arrived back here by air on 12 July. The Myanmars, Aung Myo Htwe (a) Pha Le and Kyaw Win Tun, went to Ranong in Yodaya via Kawthoung in Myanmar to find a job there. Ten Myanmars including the two arrived at Kapoe in Yodaya in early June through the contact of some labour agents. Later, they were transported to Bannan jetty, and were sent to the sea on board a Yodaya fish transport ship.

After sailing three nights and fours days, the ship met with a trawler at the sea. The two were put on board the trawler. For 20 days, they worked on board the trawler under the instructions of 12 Yodayas, who were on board the ship. In the early July, the two Myanmars were transferred to another trawler. The nature of all the Yodaya helmsman, machinist, foreman and workers on board the ship were rough. The Yodayas ordered the two Myanmars to continuously work all the time. The two also found that the Yodayas were taking Yaba, (stimulant tablets) and smoking the powdered ecstasy pills.

As the two Myanmars were not skilled in the work, they were subject to abusive language, kicks, punches, boiling-water splashes and whips of the Yodayas even for a small mistake. Aung Myo Tun suffered a whip wound on his right waist as he was beaten by a leather belt. As Kyaw Win Tun understood Yodaya language a little, he knew from a Yodaya that they were bought by the helmsman for 10,000 bahts; that they would have to work on board the trawler from for three years without payment; that they would be killed if they refused to work. The two Myanmars came to understand that their situation would become worse, if they continued to work on board the ship.

So, they took four buoys each from the fishing net in the night and jumped into the sea together the buoys. A Malaysian lubricant tanker found the two after they were drifting in the sea for about three days. The Malaysian ship took them to Singapore. After arriving at Singapore, they contacted the Myanmar Embassy. From there, they arrived back here with the help of the Embassy.
