Yangon, 11 July - On the occasion of the anniversary of the People's Revolution Day of Mongolia, which falls on 11 July 2002, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Natsagiiyn Bagabandi, President of Mongolia.

( 3 ) Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than tours Ayeyawady Division

Yangon, 10 July- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than of the Ministry of Defence and party, accompanied by Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Brig-Gen Htay Oo, left Myanaung for Ingapu at 7 am yesterday.

They proceeded to Yaykyi township hall. Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and party met chairmen of Yaykyi and Kyonpyaw Township Peace and Development Councils and members, departmental personnel, social organizations, chairmen of Ward Peace and Development Councils and members and local people and discussed regional development. Chairman of Yaykyi and Kyonpyaw Township Peace and Development Council U Soe Lwin and Chairman of Kyonpyaw Township Peace and Development Council U Soe Lin reported on location, climate, transport, education, health, social sectors and matters relating to agriculture, livestock breeding, prevalence of law and order and peace and tranquillity. Commander Brig-Gen Htay Oo also reported on economic enterprises, matters relating to agriculture, livestock breeding, education, health, transport, flow of commodity and practising thrift.

In his speech, Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than said economic development plays a vital role in building a peaceful modern developed nation. As ours is an agro-based nation, agricultural development is important. In economic sector, Ayeyawady Division is the one on which the State relies and those who work in the division are forces for economic progress. He spoke of the need to make efforts for continued progress. Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and party observed collective paddy transplanting at the farms of farmers U Maung Yone and U Tut in Kaingchaung Village tract in Yaykyi Township. Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and party discussed agriculture and fish and meat sectors in meeting with farmers from Yaykyi, Kyaunggon and Kyonpyaw Townships.

Commander Brig-Gen Htay Oo reported on methods for progress of agriculture and effective use of fertilizers. Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than spoke at length on the government's endeavours for development of agriculture, cooperation of local authorities, extended cultivation, mixed cropping, use of local-made fertilizers, EM Bokashi and pesticides.

Next, Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and party inspected showroom on agricultural implements of Myanma Agriculture Service and companies. Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and party went to the briefing hall near Bo Myat Tun Bridge in Nyaungdon Township where Director-General of Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems U Chit Khin reported on bank erosion and preventive measures. Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than then gave instructions. Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and party inspected 100-acre model jute plantation in Natpay Camp in Hteikwagyi Village in Nyaungdon Township.

Division Manager of Myanma Jute Enterprise U Kyaw Myint and officials reported on work. Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and party went to the construction site of Maubin University and Managing Director of Dagon International Co U Win Aung reported on construction of two-storey lecture hall and four-storey main lecture hall. Managing Director of Shwekyarbyan Construction Co Dr Zaw Tun reported on lecture halls of government technological college (Maubin) and completion of the foundation of the main building. Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than then gave instructions on completion of the project in time and construction of the halls in accord with the standards sets.

Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and party went to the construction site of 200-bed District People's Hospital (Maubin). Project Director U Aung Min of Htutkhaung Construction Co Ltd reported on construction work. Head of Ayeyawady Division Health Department Dr Than Aung reported on wards at the hospital and Project Director U Aung Min on targets and future tasks. Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than gave instructions. Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and party arrived back here in the evening.

Medical ward of the Sangha opened at Mawlamyine Traditional Medicine Hospital

 Yangon, 10 July - A ceremony to open the medical ward of the Sangha of Traditional Medicine Hospital was held in front of the hospital in Mawlamyine on yesterday morning, attended by Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Maung Bo of the Ministry of Defence. Also present on the occasion were Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Brig-Gen Thura Myint Aung, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Myo Hla, senior military officers, Secretary of Mon State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Maw Maw, Director-General Dr Thein Swe of Traditional Medicine Department, officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, social organizations and wellwishers. First, the Commander and the Director-General formally opened the medical ward. Then, Maj-Gen Maung Bo and officials inspected the ward. The medical ward was built at a cost of K 12 million donated by the wellwishers.

( 4 ) 4th ASEAN Cultural Sub-committee Meeting on 31 July-2 Aug

Yangon, 10 July - Coordination meeting on holding the Fourth ASEAN Cultural Sub-committee Meeting of the ASEAN Committee of Culture and Information, to be hosted by Myanmar, was held at the Ministry of Culture this afternoon. Present were Minister for Culture U Tin Winn, deputy ministers, departmental heads, officials of the sub-committees. Chairman of the Central Committee for Holding the Meeting Minister for Culture U Tin Winn delivered an address.

 He said the meeting was to coordinate tasks among the ministries concerned and officials of the sub-committees for successfully holding the meeting and for enabling all the delegates and observers of the ASEAN Secretariat to experience stability of the State and peace and tranquillity and Myanma cultural heritage. He then invited suggestions. Next, Chairman of the ASEAN Culture and Information Committee Director-General U Myint Thein Swe of Department of Cultural Institute reported on arrangements for holding the meeting. Those present took part in the discussions. The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the minister. The Fourth ASEAN Cultural Sub-committee Meeting will be held at the Traders Hotel from 31 July to 2 August.

Traditional medicine instructors course opened

Yangon, 10 July -Organized by the supervisory committee of Bago Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association, a ceremony to open the traditional medicine instructor training course was held at the hall of Toungoo Peace and Development Council in yesterday morning.

It was attended by Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Brig-Gen Aung Min, Secretary of the division Lt-Col Aung Min and members, Director of the Traditional Medicine Department of the Ministry of Health Dr Daw Myat Myat Ohn Khin, Chairman of the supervisory committee for Bago Division MCWA Head of the Health Department of the division Dr Maung Maung Myint and members, local authorities, members of MCWA, USDA and social organizations, guests and trainees. After the address delivered by the commander, Dr Daw Myat Myat Ohn Khin reported to the commander on effectiveness of Myanma traditional medicines, and Dr Maung Maung Myint on subjects and lectures for the course. The course is being attended by 60 trainees, who are members of MCWAs of Toungoo District.

20th work coord meeting of Supreme Court held

Yangon, 10 July- The second day session of the 20th work coordination meeting of the Supreme Court and state/division judges took place at the meeting hall of the Supreme Court this morning. It was attended by Chief Justice U Aung Toe, vice-chief justices, judges of the Supreme Court, directors-general and directors, advisers, state/division judges, deputy directors and head of office. Respective state/division judges made reports on judicial affairs and progress of work so far carried out. A general round of discussions were held. Afterwards, the meeting came to an end with concluding remarks by Chief Justice U Aung Toe.

( 5 ) Industry-1 Minister inspects factories in Magway

Yangon, 10 July - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by officials, arrived at the construction site of Pwintbyu Textile Mill project of Myanma Textile Industries in Pwintbyu Township, Magway Division, yesterday morning and inspected completion of the main building and 33 KV power sub-station, other buildings and warehouses. Later, the minister met with officials concerned at the briefing hall of Pwintbyu Textile Mill (project). U Than Tun, Project Director, reported on progress of the project works and engineering works with the use of charts.

Next, MTI Managing Director U Oo Thein Maung gave a supplementary report. The minister gave instructions on timely completion of the project. Pwintbyu Textile Mill is located on the Lekaing-Pwintbyu Road near Kanthagyi Village, two miles from Pwintbyu Township and it is situated on 681.71 acres of land. The project is being implemented under the contract between MTI and Tianjin Machinery Import & Export Corporation of China signed on 16 July 2000. The minister together with Chairman of Minbu District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Maung Win and officials inspected the construction site of Ayeyawady River Bridge linking Minbu and Magway at 7.30 am.

 Later, he also inspected production process of the soft drink factory of Myanma Foodstuff Industries with the use of dosing machine, filling machine and capping machine in Magway. At the Soap Factory of Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries, the minister saw over production process of Shwewa Soap, Carbolic Soap and Hmwe Soap. There, he discussed with the production of quality goods and bosting production. Afterwards, the minister inspected preparatory tasks of Myanma Umbrella Factory which will be opened soon, and production process of umbrellas at the factory.

The minister inspected sale at Winthuza shop and Dyeing and Printing Factory in Magway. At the factory, the minister inspected the boiler and met with the officials. Central Executive Committee Member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association U Aung Thaung met with secretaries and executives of Natmauk and Myothit Township USDAs and gave instructions on the organizational works and future tasks. At 2 pm, the minister inspected the sale of goods at Bagan-NyaungU Winthuza shop. Then, the CEC member met with secretaries, organizers and executives of Kyaukpadaung and Bagan-NyaungU Township USDAs at NyaungU District USDA office. First, the executives and organizers reported on political, economic and social affairs in their regions to him. After hearing reports, the CEC member attended to the needs and give instrucions on the future plans.

Minister inspects cooperative garment factories

Yangon, 10 July - Minister for Cooperatives Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, accompanied by departmental officials, arrived at the garment factory of Shweyi Linn Cooperative Ltd on Kanaung Minthagyi 3rd lane in Shwepaukkan Industrial Zone, North Okkalapa Township, this morning. At the briefing hall, Chairman of the Cooperative Ltd U Wan Yi reported on tasks being carried out. The minister gave necessary instructions and inspected the factory. Then, the minister and party inspected the garment factory of Shwezinaye Garment and General Trading Cooperative Ltd in North Okkalapa. Next, they proceeded to Lion City Garment Factory and General Trading Cooperative Ltd in Insein Township. The minister and party inspected the factory.

( 6 ) CPT Minister tours Mandalay, Sagaing and Magway divisions

Yangon, 10 July - Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Thein Zaw inspected the microwave station and auto telephone exchange of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications at Mandalay International Airport on 7 July. Then, he proceeded to Mandalay and saw over the auto telephone exchange in Mandalay Myothit and left necessary instructions.

 Next, he inspected Pyigyidagun auto telephone exchange, GSM mobile radio station and DECT radio telephone station in Mandalay and gave instructions to the officials on extended installation of telephone lines, installation of public phones in Mandalay and ensuring communication in suburban and rural areas. Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Chairman North-West Command Commander Brig-Gen Soe Naing and the minister on 8 July looked into the auto telephone exchange in Sagaing and production process at telephone cable factory in Sagaing Industrial Zone.

The minister then inspected telephone exchanges in Myinmu and ChaungU and gave instructions on ensuring installation of auto telephone exchanges. Afterwards, he went to Monywa and inspected progress of construction of Monywa Industrial Zone auto exchange and left instructions for speedy completion.

The minister also inspected Monywa auto telephone exchange. Later, the minister headed for Yesagyo in Magway Division and inspected the microwave station and auto telephone exchange. He then gave instructions on ensuring installation of telephone lines in the surrounding areas. Yesterday, the minister inspected Pakokku auto telephone exchange and left instructions on extended installation of telephones and installation of telephones at Pakokku Industrial Zone. CEC Member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Brig-Gen Thein Zaw met with members of Pakokku District USDA and explained the aim and tasks of the association. Then, the minister inspected installation of machinery at Tantkyitaung microwave station and left necessary instructions.

Minister inspects railroad sections

 Yangon, 10 July -Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung on 7 July inspected railroads and bridges between Toungoo and Pyinmana-Taungdwin-gyi stations and gave necessary instructions. Then, he met with divisional officials, engineers and workers at the project office in Taungdwingyi and gave instructions on maintenance works and welfare of the staff. On 8 July, he inspected railroad and bridges between Magway and Pyay stations and left instructions.

 

Exporters and importers briefed

 Yangon, 10 July - The briefing on trading for exporters and importers was held at the Ministry of Commerce at the corner of Strand Road and Shwebontha Street at 2 pm today. Present were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, advisers, directors-general and managing directors, the president of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and executives, rice and paddy entrepreneurs, edible oil entrepreneurs, fisheries entrepreneurs and export and import entrepreneurs totalling over 400. First, Secretary of Trade Policy Council Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha explained matters related to trade policies.

Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein briefed those present on banking services and revenue tasks and Chairman of the Committee for Ensuring Prompt and Regular Freight-handling and Operating Full Capacity Minister Lt-Gen Min Thein explained that the entrepreneurs are to undertake the tasks in accord with rules and regulations. Similarly, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone explained that export and import entrepreneurs are allowed to import goods through earnings from exports. It is necessary that the entrepreneurs are to carry out the import business after acquiring correct import licence. The foreign companies established with the permission of Myanmar Investment Commission have been allowed to export products of their enterprises and to import required raw materials. If the entrepreneurs follow procedures of the tasks correctly, the business will be smooth.

The Government has issued laws, orders, notifications and procedures related to the tasks of entrepreneurs and businessmen. And success of the State, the people and themselves will be achieved in the long term if the entrepreneurs cooperate with the Government. The meeting then ended in the afternoon.

( 7 ) Paper-reading session on development of hiking and mountaineering to be held

Yangon, 10 July - The coordination meeting to hold the paper-reading session on proposal for development of Myanmar hiking & mountaineering tour, co-organized by Forest Department, Myanmar Travelling Entrepreneurs Association, Myanmar Hiking and Mountaineering Association and Universities Hiking and Mountaineering Sub-committee and under the supervision of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, was held at the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism this afternoon. Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu gave instructions on papers and preparations for the paper-reading session. The session will be held on 31 July.

Commander meets departmental officials in Mongphyat District

Yangon, 10 July -Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Chairman Triangle Region Command Commander Brig-Gen Khin Zaw met with Mongphyat District and Township level departmental officials and discussed matters related to regional development at the office of District Peace and Development Council on 7 July. Also present at the meeting were Brig-Gen Phone Swe of Mongphyat Station and district and township level departmental officials. The commander elaborated on efforts to be made for exceeding the targets, participating in regional development tasks hand in hand with the local people, successful implementation of projects for substitution of shifting cultivation into highland cultivation; dissemination of modern agricultural methods to local farmers for boosting production of crops; and promotion of education and health care sectors. Then, officials concerned reported on tasks being done sector-wise. The commander attended to the needs. After the ceremony, the commander visited Tachilek Nagahnakaung Sayadaw and paid respects and presented offertories to him.

Railroad sections and roads inspected in Kachin State

Yangon, 10 July - Kachin State Peace and Development Council Chairman Northern Command Commander Brig-Gen Maung Maung Swe, together with Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation U Pe Than and departmental officials, inspected maintenance of Kachin State section of Myitkyina-Nantsiaung railroad on 7 July morning. Then, the commander, the deputy minister and party met with those in charge of railroad sections under Myanma Railways at Mogaung Station and gave instructions on maintenance of railroads, systematic replacement of sleepers and timely arrival and using railroad stones, and fulfilled the requirements. Afterwards, the commander, the deputy minister and party saw over the railroad from Mogaung Station up to Nantsiaung Station. They looked into the Myitkyina-Shwebo Road (Kachin State section). Senior Engineer U Soe Tint of Myitkyina District Public Works reported on repairing of the road section and creek bridges. After fulfilling the needs, the commander inspected the road section and the bridges under repair.

( 8 ) Divisional MPF holds meeting

Yangon, 10 July - The 2002 Mandalay Division Myanmar Police Force coordination meeting was held at Aung San Hall of Mandalay Division MPF in Chanaye-thazan Township on 8 July morning. Present were Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen Ye Myint, Mandalay City Development Committee Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win, Deputy Chief Justice U Khin Maung Latt, Command Staff Colonel Col Bo Ni, Commandant of MPF Central Police Training School Police Brig-Gen Win Myaing, Division Secretary Lt-Col Tin Ohn, Commissioner of Mandalay Division General Administration Department U Kyin Lin, Division MPF Commander Police Col Hla Myo and officials. First, Brig-Gen Ye Myint and Police Col Hla Myo gave speeches. Officials reported on their respective sectors. Then, the Division MPF Commander gave necessary instructions.

At 3 pm, the commander attended the prize presentation ceremony of the Central Command Commander's Shield Soccer Tournament. After the final match, the deputy commander and officials presented prizes to outstanding players and first and second prizes to respective teams. Then, the commander presented the championship shield to the first prize winning team.

Chess competition concludes

Yangon, 10 July - A prize presentation ceremony of 13th International Chess Competition of the Ministry of Home Affairs was held at the meeting hall of the Prisons Department in Insein Township this afternoon. Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing attended the ceremony and made a speech. It was also attended by the directors-general and deputy directors-general of units and departments under the ministry, the president and officials of the Myanmar Chess Federation, chess players and guests. At the ceremony, officials presented prizes to the best players he third prize to the General Administration Department (A) team, the second to Bureau of Special Investigation Department and the first to Prisons Department (A) team. The minister presented the championship shield to the Prisons Department team.

( 9 ) 1,100 stimulant tablets seized in Momauk

Yangon, 10 July - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit, local battalion and Bhamo Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, on 7 July afternoon searched one Indaunglagyar at the entrance to Lagyaryan Village in Momauk Township and seized 1,100 stimulant tablets from his bag. Action is being taken against Indaunglagyar, 26, son of U Indaungladwe of Nanhsanyan Village, Waimaw Township, under section 15/19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Myothit Police Station, Momauk Township.

5.09 kilos of marijuana seized in Ngaphe

Yangon, 10 July - A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Magway Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched a house that belongs to U Boe Ywe, in Padan village, Ngaphe Township, at 4 pm on 5 November 2001 and nabbed Maung Maung, Maung Win and Hla Win together with 5.09 kilos of marijuana. Ngaphe Police Station filed Maung Maung, 35, son of U Lon of Shauktaung village, Ngaphe Township, Maung Win, 40, son of U Tin Oak and Hla Win, 34, son of U Ohn of Padan village under Sections 15/19 (A)/ 20 (A)/21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. On 21 May 2002, Minbu District Court sentenced Maung Maung, Maung Win and Hla Win to 15 years'each under Section 19 (A) and 20 years'  each under Section 20 (A) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law to serve separately.
