( 1 ) Maj-Gen Maung Bo meets departmental officials in Mon State

YANGON, 6 June - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Maung Bo of the Ministry of Defence held a meeting with local authorities, departmental officials and factory managers at the office of Mon State Peace and Development Council on 3 June afternoon,

Present were Chairman of Mon State Pence and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Brig-Gen Thura Myint Aung, Secretary Lt-Col Aung Maw Maw and members, chairmen of Mon State, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, Mon State level departmental officials and factory managers.

Maj-Gen Maung Bo made an address on the occasion. In his speech, he said the government is making efforts for emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation; in doing so; departmental personnel are to speed up their efforts in per. forming duties assigned with the patriotism in the production sector, it is needed to produce standard goods; efforts are to be made to extend agriculture meat and fish, mineral and forest sectors in order to exceed targets; officials concerned are to make field trips to the grass-roots level to supervise tasks; and to fulfill requirements in keeping with the time; and to successfully implement tasks, departments are to co-ordinate with local people and to organize them to participate in implementing projects. Then, the meeting came to an end.

( 2 ) Attacks to be launched by Tatmadaw to recapture Tatmadaw outposts and people's militia camps explained to military attaches

YANGON, 6 June -A Press briefing on the attacks to be launched by the Tatmadaw to recapture the Tatmadaw outposts and people's militia camps which were lost to SURA during the joint attack by SURA drug-trafficking terrorist group and Yodaya army. on 20 May, was held at Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road here this afternoon.

Present were Vice-Chief of Military Intelligence Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, senior military officers, Dean of the Military Attaché Corps Military Attaché of Malaysia Colonel Harun Birn Hitam, Military Attaché of the Russian Federation Colonel Vasily  Savenkov , Military Attaché of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Sr Col Le Van Vy, Military Attaché of Indonesia Colonel Amiruddin Usman, Military Attaché of the Republic of Korea Colonel Yoon Han Hong, Military Attaché of Japan Colonel Hideaki Kitahara, Military Attaché of Pakistan Colonel Ihsan Ui Haq, Military Attaché of Thailand Colonel Kasem Nakpun, Military Attaché of the People's Republic of China Colonel Liu Jingang, Deputy Military Attaché of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Major Khamsing Soseng-In, Deputy Military Attaché of the Russian Federation Captain Nilai V Akimov (RFN) and Assistant Military Attaché of the United States of America Capt James Mc Andrew. Maj-Gen Kyaw Win extended greetings. Deputy Head of Department of the Ministry of Defence Lt-Col Si Thu explained the attacks to be launched by the Tatmadaw to recapture the Tatmadaw outposts and people's militia camps which were lost to SURA during the joint attack by the SURA drug-trafficking terrorist group and Yodaya army on 20 May.

Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and Lt-Col Si Thu replied to the queries raised by the military attaches of Malaysia, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Korea, Pakistan the USA and Japan.

Then, the military attaches viewed the maps showing the strongholds of SURA opium-trafficking terrorist insurgents inside Yodaya, camps of KNU insurgents under the assumed name of refuge camps and the camps of KNU/Yodaya army.

( 3 ) GEC Syndicate holds annual meeting

YANGON, 6 June - The Government Employees Cooperatives Syndicate Ltd held the annual general meeting for fiscal 2001-2002 at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Cooperatives on Bogyoke Aung San Road here this morning. U Chit Swe, Chairman of the GEC Syndicate Ltd, presided over the first session of the meeting and Managing Director U Tin Aye acted as master of ceremonies.

It was attended by directors-general of the Cooperatives Department and the Cottage Industries Department, deputy directors of state/division, chairmen of the cooperatives banks, members of the Board of Directors of the GEC Syndicate Ltd and officials. U Chit Swe made an opening address and presented the report of the Board of Directors and the annual statement of accounts.

In the afternoon, the second session of the meeting continued and Minister for Cooperatives Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe gave a speech.

( 4 ) Multimedia teaching centre of Botahtaung BEHSs 2 and 3 open

YANGON, 6 June -A ceremony to open a multimedia teaching centre was held at Basic Education High School No 3 in Botahtaung this afternoon, attended by Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe.

Headmistress Daw San Tin and Chairman of the school board of trustees U Myint Swe formally opened the ceremony.

'The commander then formally unveiled the signboard of the centre. Afterwards, the  commander and guests viewed around the centre.

The commander and Minister U Than Aung spoke on the occasion.

A similar ceremony was held at BEHS No 2 in Botahtaung. It was. attended by Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Ministers for Education Brig- Gen Soe Win Maung and U Myo Nyunt, Commandant of No 4 Military Region. Command Brig-Gen Myo Myint, Director-General U Tin Win of No 3 Basic Education Department (Yangon City), departmental officials, local authorities, members of social organizations, members of the school board of trustees, members of the parent-teacher association, the head mistress, teachers and students.

Headmistress Daw Than Than Nwe and Chairman of the school board of trustees Maj Tin Win formally opened the centre.

The commander then formally unveiled the signboard of the centre. Afterwards, the commander and guests looked around the centre.

Later, a cash donation ceremony was held.

The commander and the minister accepted K 8,735,000 donated by the well-wishers.

Today's donations were K 5.2 million by the well-wishers, K 2,265,000 by the School Board of Trustees of BEHS No 3 and well-wishers, K 400,00} by U Khin Aung Kyaw-Daw Thwe Thwe Lay and family, K 260,000 by Chairn1an U Khin Maung Lay and Managing Di- rector Daw K)iu Kyu of Gandamar Co, K l00,000 by Patron U Khin Maung Hla - Daw Khin Kyi Htay of the Parent- Teacher Association of  BEHS No 2, K 110,000 By member of the School Board of Trustees of BEHS No 3 U Aung Myint and wife Daw Mya Mya Mu, K 200,000 by U Tin Yu - Daw Htay Htay Mon and family, K 100,100 by teachers of BEHS No 3 and a computer set, K 100,000 and 20 dozen exercise books by Daw Khin Khin Sein, old student of BEHS No 3.

( 5 ) Commander inspects construction work in Lashio

Yangon, 6 June - Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command Brig-Gen Myint Hlaing, accompanied by Deputy Commander Col Hla Myint and officials, arrived at the construction site of maternity ward of State People's Hospital in Lashio on 26 May.

Acting Medical Superintendent U Ye Myint and officials from Asia World Co Ltd reported to the commander on tasks being carried out. Then, the commander gave instructions and attended to the needs. Later, the commander went to Shwegangaw self-reliant market construction committee, where officials reported to him on reconstruction of the market. The commander then fulfilled the requirements.

( 6 ) Publishing of Armed Force Day commemorative books cordinated

Yangon, 6 June - A work co-ordination was held to publish English-translation of books to mark the 56th and 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Culture this morning. Chairman of Working Committee for Holding the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Poem and Arts Competition Deputy Minster for Culture U Soe Nyunt presided over the meeting.

In his speech, the deputy minister said that the Working Committee has been making efforts for ten years in publishing translated works on the Armed Forces Day commemorative-books in line with the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe. He then called on those present to strive for publishing the 56th and 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day commemorative books as soon as possible. Officials of the Higher Education Department, the News and Periodicals Enterprise and Myanma Radio and Television and Col Ko Ko (Myanma Air Force) reported on progress in translating manuscripts into English for the books and work being done; and Managing Director U Myint Thein of the Printing and Publishing Enterprise on progress of computer typesetting for the books.

Then, the deputy minister gave instructions on making efforts to publish the 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day commemorative book in June 2002 and the meeting came to an end.

( 7 ) Observance of Myanmar Women's Day coordinated

Yangon, 6 June - Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs held a co-ordination meeting for observance of Myanmar Women's Day, which falls on 3 July, at the Social Welfare Department at No 64 on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this afternoon. It was attended by Chairman of the Working Committee for Holding Myanmar Women's Day Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement U Hlaing Win, Vice-Chairpersons Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and Professor Daw May May Yee, members, advisers and guests.

The deputy minister delivered a speech on the occasion. The leaders of Myanmar Women's Day commemorative activities groups  the tree-planting group, the year 2002 annual women's affairs magazine publishing group and the songs and educative TV plays broadcasting group reported on tasks carried out. The working committee members also took part in the discussions. Then, the leaders of the supporting groups for holding Myanma Women's Day  the invitation and accommodation group, the decoration group, the information group, the entertainment and transport group and the documentary photos displaying group reported on work done, followed by a general round of discussions. The meeting ended with closing remarks by the chairman.

( 8 ) Book for Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Literary Award (Translation) for 2001 prescribed

Yangon, 6 June - The scrutinizing committee for the Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Award for the year 2001 has invited manuscripts for the translation competition. Four chapters selected from the book written by Abraham Rosmanpaula G.Rubel were reproduced in the form of a small book under the name of 'The Tapestry of Culture' and were published. It will be available at K 130 at Sarpay Beikman book shop from 7 June.

Those wishing to take part in the competition are to translate it into Myanmar language and send it to the -chief-editor of Sarpay Beikman Building at No 529/531 on Merchant Street in Yangon not later than 16 September 2002 (Monday). Rules and regulations for the competition can be bought at K 30 at the editorial division of Sarpay Beikman Office. Those who live in other states and divisions can get both the rules and regulations and the book at K 180 by post. It is required to send two copies of manuscripts together with two passport size photos by 16 September 2002.

( 9 ) Marijuana seized in Ahlon Township

YNGON, 6 June - A  combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Yangon Division Special Anti-drug Squad and Ahlon Police Station, acting on information, inspected Aung Zaw Zaw Tun and Myo Win near Thakin Mya Park bus-stop on Lower Kyimyindine Road in Ahlon Township on 22 May and seized 326.68 gm of marijuana inside the knapsack of Aung Zaw Zaw Tun.

Action is being taken against Aung Zaw Zaw Tun, 24, son of U Htay Win of No 1261, Nilar 1st street, 57 Ward and Myo Win, 32, son of U Tm Nyunt of No 863, Sanyei1snyein 1st street, 53 Ward in Dagon Myothit (South) Township under section 15/19 (A)/21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Ahlon police station.

Raw opium seized in Loikaw

YANGON, 6 June -A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Taunggyi Special Anti-drug Squad and the local police force, acting on information, inspected PaO Yadana Airconb-us with number plate 3 Kha/8722 at Aungban-Loikaw road on 22 May morning and seized 6.859 kilos of raw opium in side the knapsack of Win Htaik, a passenger at seat No 24 of the bus.

Action is beina taken against Win Htalk, 18, son of U Ohn Hlaing of Phayapyu  Village in Loikaw Township and owner of the raw opium Myo Aung of Lai Village in Pekhon Township, who is at large, under section 15/19 (A)/21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Kalaw police statiopn.

99 litres of Yodaya-made Pholcodine seized in Hopong

Yangon, 6 June - A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, inspected an aircon-bus with number plate Sa/9716 and a Hilux with number plate Na/4290 at the junction of crops-tax tollgate in Hopong on 26 May and seized 99 litres of Yodaya-made Pholcodine liquid on the Hilux.

The investigation on driver of the aircon-bus Htay Hlaing, son of U Aung Shwe of Sittathuka Ward in Shwehyaung, led to the arrest of Ko Htut (a) Htut Khaung, son of U Aung Ngwe of Sittathuka Ward in Shwe-hyaung and Po Cho, son of U San Ba of Nyaungshwe Hawgone Ward in Taunggyi, who arrived to carry the drugs. Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psy-chotropic Substances Law by the police station concerned.
