( 1 Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing offer "soon" to Sayadaws

Yangon, 26 March- Family members of the State Peace and Development Council and Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) led by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing offered "soon" to the State Ovadacariya Sayadaws, the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaws, the State Central Working Committee of the Sangha Sayadaws and title recipient Sayadaws at the Tatmadaw Dhammayon on Arzarni Street, Bahan Township, here this morning.

 

Also present on the occasion were the State Ovadacariya Sayadaws, the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaws led by Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Myingyan Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita, the State Central Working Committee of the Sangha Sayadaws, title recipient Sayadaws and nuns, Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Daw Khin Than Nwe, wife of Lt-Gen Tin Oo, members of the State Peace and Development Council, Commander of Yangon Command and their wives, ministers and their wives, the Yangon Mayor and wife, senior military officers of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and their wives, the Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs, the director-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads and guests.

Adviser to the State Peace and Development Council U Arnt Maung acted as master of ceremonies and read out the agenda of the ceremony. First, the ceremony was opened with three-time recitation of Namo Tassa. Then, on behalf of the Myingyan Sayadaw, Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Maha Aungmye Bonsan Kyaung Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Panninndabhivamsa invested the congregation with the Five Precepts. Next, Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited parittas.

Afterwards, the Senior General and wife and party presented offertories to Sayadaws. Then, Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddammajotika Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained. The ceremony ended with three-time recitation of Buddha Sasanam Ciram Titthatu. After the ceremony, the Senior General and his wife and party offered day "soon" to Sayadaws.

Secretary-1 pays homage to title recipient Sayadaws

Yangon, 26 March-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt paid homage to Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Sayadaw Bhaddanta Dhammasiri (Naga Hnakaung Sayadaw) and Agga Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Ven Khamchane Virachitto of the Lao People's Democratic Republic who will attend the 1363 ME religious title presentation ceremony, at Shwehintha Hall on Kaba Aye Hanthathiri Hill at 6 pm today.

The Secretary-1 offered provisions to the Sayadaws, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Dham-masiri (Naga Hnakaung Sayadaw) presented six sets of Tri-Pitakat Treatise in Yun Shan version for the Sayadaws to the Secretary-1. Then, the Secretary-1 offered one set of Tri-Pitakat Treatise in Yun Shan version donated by the Naga Hnakaung Sayadaw to Ven Khamchane Virachitto of the Lao PDR. Next, the Laotian Sayadaw donated a Buddha image to the Secretary-1. Later, they shared merits gained.

Secretary-1 receives Chairman of China National Tourism Administration

 

 Yangon, 26 March- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Chairman of China National Tourism Administration of the People's Republic of China Mr He Guangwei and party at the guest house of the Ministry of Defence at 2 pm today.

 Also present were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Immigration and Population Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department. The guests were accompanied by Charge d'Affaires ai of the PRC Embassy Mr Tang Ying.

Secretary-1 receives Bangladeshi delegation

Yangon, 26 March - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Minister of Commerce of the People's Republic of Bangladesh Mr Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and party at the guest house of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today. Present together with the Secretary-1 were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and present together with the guests was Ambassador of PRB Mr Ahmed Rahim.

( 3 ) Myanmar delegation arrives back from Mexico

Yangon, 26 March -The delegation led by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein after attending the International Conference on Financing for Development, organized by the United Nations, held in Monterrey, Mexico, from 18 to 22 March arrived back here by air this afternoon.

 Members of the delegation were welcomed back at the Yangon International Airport by Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, directors-general and managing directors under the Ministry of F&R and their families.

 The conference was attended by ministers and members of the delegations from 170 countries, Myanmar delegation led by Minister U Khin Maung Thein, Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung and Director U Nyo Myint, Permanent Representative of the Union of Myanmar to the United Nations in New York U Kyaw Tint Swe and led by Counsellor U Nyunt Swe of Permanent Representative of the Union of Myanmar to the United Nations, officials from international monetary organizations, delegates of social organizations and entrepreneurs.

 Preliminary meetings of ICFD were held at Cintemex Convention Centre in Monterrey, Mexico, from 18 to 20 March. ICFD Summit was held at the same venue on 21 March. At the summit, President of Mexico Mr Vincente Fox Quesade and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan acted as members of panel of Chairmen and made speech. Then, heads of state and delegates made speeches, Minister U Khin Maung Thein also delivered a speech at the conference which concluded successfully on 22 March.

( 4Industry-1 Minister receives Chinese guests

Yangon, 26 March- Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received President Mr Yanli Ma and party of China Metallurgical Construction (Group) Corporation at his office this afternoon. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises.

H & T Minister receives Japanese guest

Yangon, 26 March- Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin received President Shigemoto Okuda of Japan Myanmar Economic Cooperation Co Ltd at his office at noon today. They discussed the tour of Japanese tourists from Osaka in Myanmar. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, Managing Director U Kyi Tun of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and officials.

" Soon " offered to members of the Sangha

Yangon, 26 March - Directorate of Trade of the Ministry of Commerce offered a day's meal to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha at Mogok Soonsarhsaung of the State Pariyatti Sasana University this morning. Present were Rector Sayadaw of the University Agga Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Vannita and members of the Sangha, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, advisers, departmental heads and staff families. The minister and deputy minister presented offertories to the Sayadaws and K 100,000 to the official for offering "soon " to the members of the Sangha.

New station hospital opened

Yangon, 26 March - As a gesture of hailing the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, an opening ceremony of a 16-bed station hospital in Thuyethamein Village, Waw Township, Bago Division, was held at the hospital yesterday attended by Central Executive Committee member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, local Tactical Operation Commander Col Zaw Win Myint, Deputy Director-General of the Health Department Dr Hla Pe, Chairman of Bago District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Tint, officials and local people. The hospital was built at a cost of K 16.8 million.

( 5 ) Three-R literacy course concludes in Kengtung Township

Yangon, 26 March - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Aung Htwe of the Ministry of Defence attended a ceremony to mark the completion of the Three-R literacy course held at a monastery in Wamtaung Village, Mailat village-track, Kengtung Township, Shan State (East), at 8 am on 23 March. Present on the occasion were Deputy Commander of Triangle Region Command Brig-Gen Myint Swe and senior officers, local authorities, departmental officials, guests and local people. Brig-Gen Myint Swe made a speech on the occasion. Local battalion Commanding Officer Lt-Col Aung Gyi reported to the deputy commander on matters related to conducting the Three-R course. The trainees of the course demonstrated their reading skills. Then, Maj-Gen Aung Htwe handed over a bookcase and books donated by the local battalion to the village library to the chairman of the Mailat Village Peace and Development Council. Next, the commanding officer presented certificates of honour to instructors of the course. A local people spoke words of thanks. The ceremony came to an end. In consonant with the five rural development tasks, a total of 26 Three-R centres were opened in 13 villages of Mailat village-track. Altogether 485 trainees attended the courses, which began on 3 November 2001.

Maj-Gen Tin Aye attends departmental coord meeting

Yangon, 26 March- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Tin Aye of the Ministry of Defence attended the coordination meeting of departmental officials of Kyaukse Township, Kyaukse District, Mandalay Division, at Hsinmin Cement Plant in Kyaukse on 22 March. Also present were Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, Tactical Operations Commander of the Central Command Col Thein Hlaing, division, district and township level departmental officials and officials of ten factories under the Ministry and the cement plant project. Speaking on the occasion, Maj-Gen Tin Aye said that the government is making concerted efforts to ensure emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation day and night. And Head of State Senior General Than Shwe has given guidance on construction of important factories for national development.

 On completion of the factories there will be industrial zone development and transport charges among townships will decrease, he added. There will be development in villages and townships with the industrial zone development in Kyaukse Township, he noted and urged departmental officials to cooperate for completing the project in time and to present requirements of the project. Then, the deputy minister reported on functions of the ten factories and the departmental officials on assistance to be rendered for the project. Afterwards, Maj-Gen Tin Aye gave necessary instructions. Maj-Gen Tin Aye spent the night in Mandalay.

Chinese tourism delegation arrives

Yangon, 26 March - The tourism delegation led by Chairman of the National Tourism Administration of the People's Republic of China Mr He Guangwei and party arrived here by air at 9.25 am today. They were welcomed at the Yangon International Airport by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, officials of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, Charge d' Affaires ai Mr Tang Ying and officials of the PRC Embassy in Yangon.

( 6 ) Maj-Gen Maung Bo inspects Heinda and Kalonhta Mines

 Yangon, 26 March- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Maung Bo of the Ministry of Defence, Col Htain Win of Dawei Station and officials inspected Heinda Mines in Dawei Township on 23 March. General Manager of Taninthayi Division No 2 Mining Enterprise U Khin Maung Lay reported on work done at the mine and cooperation with Myanmar Ponpipet Co. Maj-Gen Maung Bo gave instructions. Heinda Mine lies 33 miles east of Dawei. No 2 Mining Enterprise undertakes mineral production in cooperation with Myanmar Ponpipet Co starting from July 1999.

 The amounts of mineral extraction were 62.3003 tons of tin in 1999-2000, 497.5207 tons of tin in 2000-2001 and 484.3184 tons of tin up to February 2002. On 24 March, Maj-Gen Maung Bo went to Kalonhta Mines. General Manager of Taninthayi Division No 2 Mining Enterprise U Khin Maung Lay and Project Manager U Aung Thein reported on extension of work and mineral extraction. Maj-Gen Maung Bo fulfilled the requirements. Kalonhta Mine lies six miles and four furlongs east of Yebyu. A and A Natural Resource Development Co started mineral extraction in May 1998.

 The company has extracted 21.1223 tons of tin up to February. Arrangements have been made for boosting mineral extraction in cooperation with Mingwha Co of China. Maj-Gen Maung Bo inspected roads and bridges along Yebyu-Kaleinaung-Kanbauk Road. In the afternoon, Maj-Gen Maung Bo inspected construction of Kanbauk-Zardi-Nabule Road on self-reliance basis and gave instructions on durability of the roads and bridges and upgrading of the roads. The 33-mile road is in the west of the Kaleinaung-Dawei Road. On completion of the road one can easily go by car to Kanbauk, Zardi, Nabule, Maungmagan and Dawei.

Maj-Gen Tin Aye inspects gems mining camps in Mogok

Yangon, 26 March- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Tin Aye of the Ministry of Defence, accompanied by officials, arrived at Yadana Gadegadar gem mining camp in Kyaukpyatthat Sanpya village, Mogok Township, on 23 March morning. At the briefing hall, Director Lt-Col Sein Than and officials reported on locations of gems mining camps, strength of staff and machinery, income and gems trading. Maj-Gen Tin Aye gave necessary instructions.

Then, Maj-Gen Tin Aye inspected gems, mining tasks and gems sorting. Next, Maj-Gen Tin Aye proceeded to Ngayant-in Pansho gems mining camp and inspected gems and mining tasks. At Linyaunggyi gems mining camp, Maj-Gen Tin Aye inspected gems mining and gems. Afterwards, Maj-Gen Tin Aye went to the jewellery shop of MG Ruby Co Ltd in Mogok. He inspected jewellery items at the shop. Then, Maj-Gen Tin Aye arrived at Shwepyiaye gems extraction camp. He inspected gems mining and gems sorting and gave necessary instructions to officials of the camp.

( 7 ) Bangladesh Trade Fair opens

Yangon, 26 March- The opening ceremony of Bangladesh Trade Fair sponsored by Export Promotion Board of Bangladesh with the permission of the Ministry of Commerce was held at Yangon Trade Centre in Mingala Taungnyunt Township this morning. Present were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister of Commerce of Bangladesh Mr Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and party, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, departmental officials, ambassadors and military attaches, national entrepreneurs, officials of companies from Bangladesh and guests. Ministers Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and Mr Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury formally opened the fair. Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone said the fair was held under the joint sponsorship of Bangladesh Embassy in Yangon and the Ministry of Commerce.

 He said the trade fairs are rendezvous for buyers and sellers. He welcomed the trade fair and said it was an effective way for export market. Markets will be found in the two countries and the fair will also forge close relations between the two neighbouring countries, he said. He said the fair would serve as a bridge for promotion of bilateral trade. He said he believed that mutual confidence and benefits would be achieved among the people of the two countries. He expressed thanks to participants and said he hoped that more trade fairs would be held in the years to come. Minister Mr Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury thanked the government and the Ministry of Commerce. A dance troupe from Bangladesh entertained the guests and the minister and party had photos taken. The minister and party observed personal and household goods, steel sheets and nails, On line banking service of Arab Bangladesh Bank Co and Asia Wealth Bank Ltd, garments, medicines, printing ink, soft drinks and cosmetics. The fair opens daily from 10 am to 5 pm till 30 March. Admission is free.

Management Multiplier Course opened

Yangon, 26 March- USDA CEC member Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint delivered an address at the opening ceremony of USDA Executives' Management Multiplier Course No 11 at Dagon Myothit (East) Township USDA Office this morning. Then, the CEC member accepted donations of wellwishers. In Dagon Myothit (East) Township, 3,200 trainees are attending the national culture and morals courses at 11 places.

Title recipient Sayadaws from abroad arrive

Yangon, 26 March- Sayadaws from abroad, who will accept religious titles offered by the Government at the religious title offering ceremony to be held on 28 March, Fullmoon Day of Taboung, 1363 ME, arrived here by air yesterday evening. The Sayadaws were Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kelasa of Sri Lanka, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Khemin-da of Japan, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Jotalankara of the USA and Most Ven Kham Chane Virachitto of Lao PDR. The Sayadaws were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Director-General U Sann Lwin of the Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana, officials and disciples of the Sayadaws.

( 8 ) Ministers receive Chinese delegation

Yangon, 26 March -Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, together with Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung held consultations with visiting Chairman of the National Tourism Administration of the People's Republic of China Mr He Guangwei and party at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at 3.30 pm today. The two sides exchanged views on matters relating to tourism promotion and cooperation between the two countries. Also present on the occasion were the deputy ministers and officials concerned from the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance and Revenue, Ministry of Immigration and Population, Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Information, Charge d' Affaires ai of the PRC Embassy Mr Tang Ying and members of the Chinese delegation. In the evening, Minister U Win Aung hosted a dinner in honour of the Chinese delegation at Karaweik Palace.

( 9 ) Minister tours Hlinethaya Industrial Zone

Yangon, 26 March- Chairman of Myanmar Industrial Development Committee in-charge of Hlinethaya Industrial Zone Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin arrived at the Hlinethaya Industrial Zone Management Committee Office in Hlinethaya on 24 March. Vice-Chairman of the management committee U Myat Thin Aung and members reported on tasks carried out in the zone and requirements of industries. The minister attended to their needs. Then, he proceeded to Top Soap Factory in the zone. Officials reported on production process of the import-substitute soap powder. Next, the minister arrived at the footwear factory and inspected production of various kinds of rubber footwear. Officials reported on production work. At the paint factory of United Paint Group, Managing Director U Aye Han of the group reported to the minister on facts about the factory and production tasks with the use of slides. The minister then inspected production of paints.
