( 1 ) Secretary-1 attends opening ceremony of factories in Mandalay Industrial Zone

Yangon, 26 Feb- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by the ministers, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads and officials, left here by Tatmadaw aircraft this morning and arrived at Mandalay International Airport in TadaU, Mandalay Division, at 9.30 am.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed there by member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Ye Myint of the Ministry of Defence, Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen Ye Myint, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win, military and civilian officers and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party arrived at University of Traditional Medicine (Mandalay) in Aungmyethazan Township where they were welcomed by Director-General Dr Thein Swe of Traditional Medicine Department, the pro-rector and faculty members. At the hall of the university, Commander Brig-Gen Ye Myint, the director-general and officials reported on the area of the university campus, location of the buildings, the lay-out plan for extended construction of the main buildings and arrangements for construction tasks.

The Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions. Next, the Secretary-1 inspected the site chosen for construction of the main buildings of the university on the campus and left necessary instructions. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the teaching herbal garden on 2.6 acres of land where over 500 kinds of herbal plants are grown. Then, the Secretary-1 and party inspected construction tasks of the Government Technological College in Patheingyi Township. At the briefing hall, the Secretary-1 heard reports on construction of new buildings presented by Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung and gave necessary instructions.

Next, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the buildings. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Canda Muni Pagoda in Mandalay. At the briefing hall, Col Soe Lwin of Mandalay Station reported on renovation of Canda Muni Pagoda, maintenance work of Dhammazedis and stone inscriptions of the pagoda. Minister for Culture U Tin Winn presented a supplementary report. The Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions. Next, the Secretary-1 and party inspected renovation and maintenance tasks of 1,774 Dhammazedi stone inscriptions of the Suttas, Vinaya, Abhidhamma, Attha-katha and Dhika of the Lord Buddha undertaken by Hermit U Khanti in 1275 ME. After paying reverence to the Canda Muni Buddha Image, the Secretary-1 inspected tasks for renovation of the pagoda and donated cash to the fund of the pagoda.

 Then, the Secretary-1 and party arrived at the work site of the sports and physical education science institute (Upper Myanmar-Mandalay) construction project under the Ministry of Sports. At the briefing hall, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint reported on location, area and scale model of the project, construction of hostels for students, sports grounds, stadiums and courses to be conducted and Director of Asia World Co Ltd U Maung Kyay on progress of construction.

The Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions and inspected the project site. The Secretary-1 and party next proceeded to Mandalay Model Industrial Myothit. The Secretary-1 attended the opening ceremonies of Paddy Ear Brand bicycle tyre and tube factory of the Flying Wheel Industrial Production Ltd and Swallow Textile Factory of the CYT Industrial Production Ltd at the respective factories of the Industrial Zone 1 of the Industrial Myothit in the afternoon.

 Also present were Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Commander Brig-Gen Ye Myint, the mi-nisters, the deputy ministers, the Mandalay Mayor, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental officials, members of division, district and township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel, USDA members, social organizations, entrepreneurs and employees. The opening of Paddy Ear Brand bicycle tyre and tube factory of the Flying Wheel Industrial Production Ltd took place at the factory at 2.30 pm. Commander Brig-Gen Ye Myint, Managing Directors of the Industrial Production Ltd U Law Kya and U Sein Win Maung formally opened the factory.

Next, the Secretary-1 formally unveiled the signboard of the factory. Managing Director U Sein Win Maung extended greetings and explained facts about the products. The Secretary-1 and party inspected the work site. The factory produces 10,000 different sizes of tyre and 7,000 different sizes of tubes per day. The Secretary-1 and party arrived at the Swallow Textile Factory of the CYT Industrial Production Ltd. The opening of the Swallow Textile Factory was held at the factory at 3 pm.

 Commander Brig-Gen Ye Myint, Managing Director of the factory U Tun Naing formally opened the factory. Then, the Secretary-1 formally unveiled the signboard of the factory. The Secretary-1 and party inspected the factory and the ceremony came to an end. The factory produces 4.8 tons of thread a day. The Secretary-1 and party visited Super Mandala Jeep assembling main unit in Mandalay Industrial Zone-1. They inspected jeeps and production of spare parts. Unit in-charge U Maung Maung Soe reported on work.

 The Secretary-1 and party met industrialists at Kanaung industrial hall in Mandalay Model Industrial Myothit. Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander Brig-Gen Ye Myint reported on strength of industrialists, kinds of products and formation of committees for development of industrial zones. U Maung Maung Soe of Producers and Mechanic Cooperatives Society reported on manufacturing of Super Mandala Jeep, its quality and parts assembled, manufacturing of jeeps up to 50, production of parts needed, distribution in local market, future tasks and requirements. Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint reported on assistance to industrial development.

The Secretary-1 said the Head of State Senior General Than Shwe had given guidance on provision of assistance to national industrialists in 18 industrial zones established throughout the country for regular development of industrial production with momentum. He said in order to provide assistance to the development of national industries Myanmar Industrial Development Supervisory Committee was formed. Based on agriculture, efforts are to be made for progress in other industrial production under the national economic policy laid down by the State, he said. Only when the country becomes an industrialized nation, will a modern developed nation emerge, he said. Therefore, he said, the government has been providing assistance to national industries as far as possible.

 The Secretary-1 urged national entrepreneurs to make concerted efforts to become major industries from small and medium ones with the use of wealth and know-how. Next, the Secretary-1 accepted K 10 million donated by Managing Director U Kyaw Myint of Tiger Head Cement Plant for basic education primary schools, K 5 million by Managing Director U Tun Naing of CYT Industrial Production Co Ltd and K 5 million by Managing Director U Sein Win Maung of Paddy Ear Brand Industrial Production Ltd. The Secretary-1 and party visited the booths on products of the Ministry of Industry-1 and industrial products of private factories in industrial zones. The Secretary-1 and party arrived back here in the evening.

( 2 ) Regional development tasks inspected in Magway and Mandalay divisions

Yangon, 26 Feb - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Ye Myint of the Ministry of Defence, together with officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, Director-General of the Development Affairs Department under the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Myo Myint and departmental officials, inspected regional development tasks in Magway Division on 23 February morning.

 Accompanied by Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Zaw Min, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected repairs of Bwetgyi Creek bridge on Pyay-Aunglan motor road. Deputy Superintending Engineer of Public Works U Ngwe Tun and Magway Division Senior Engineer U Kyaw Thaung reported on progress of work. Maj-Gen Ye Myint gave necessary instructions.

 Then, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected the work site of Bwetgyi Dam Construction Project being undertaken by the Construction Group-3 of the Irrigation Department near Dandaunt Village, Aunglan Township, Magway Division. Director of the group-3 U Tun Aung Lwin and Assistant Director of Taungdwingyi Township Irrigation Department U Soe Myint reported on construction of the main embankment, conduit pipe, control tower, spillway and irrigation system and arrival of heavy machinery and fuel oil. Col Zaw Min gave a supplementary report. After fulfilling requirements, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected building of the embankment and conduit pipe.

 They then inspected progress in construction of village-to-village western Yoma road from the dam. Next, they inspected villages on the western Yoma road. Maj-Gen Ye Myint met with local people, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Maternal and Child Welfare Associations and students and attended to their needs. In the evening, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected tarring of Taungdwingyi-Myothit motor road where Magway Division construction Senior Engineer U Kyaw Thaung reported on progress of work and future tasks. Maj-Gen Ye Myint fulfilled the requirements.

Then, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected all-round renovation of historic Aungmyin Zeya Pagoda in Taungdwingyi where engineer U Than Aye reported on progress of work, fund raising and financial statements and work to be carried out. Maj-Gen Ye Myint gave instructions on purchase of materials for the project and fulfilled the needs. On 24 February, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected construction of Institute of Medicine in Magway. At the construction project site, project director U Maung Kyay of Asia World Co and project engineer U Chan Sein and officials reported on progress of work and work being carried out.

 After that, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party proceeded to the runway construction project site in Magway. At the briefing hall, Director of the Civil Aviation Department U Win Oo reported on work being carried out. Then, project director U Maung Kyay reported on the project. After fulfilling the requirements, Maj-Gen Ye Myint inspected land preparation, the cement-mixer and paver. Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) Construction Project site. At the briefing hall, Chief Engineer (Project) U Han Zaw of Public Works reported on arrangements for construction of the approach structure, progress of work and work being carried out.

 Then, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party looked into the project on Minbu side and gave instructions on ensuring work site safety, requirements and timely completion. Next, Maj-Gen Ye Myint met with division level departmental officials at the town hall in Magway. Also present were Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen Ye Myint, Chairman Col Zaw Min, local authorities, departmental officials, executives of USDA, members of MCWA, the Working Committee for Women's Affairs and others.

Speaking on the occasion, Maj-Gen Ye Myint said that the five major development tasks transport, education, health, rural water supply and economy are to be fully carried out for rural people. He called on departmental personnel in cooperation with local residents and social organizations to implement those tasks with might and main and goodwill accepting them as national duties and to seek means and ways for successful implementation of those tasks.

Then, Col Zaw Min reported on work being carried out in agriculture, transport and rural development sectors in Magway Division. Commander Brig-Gen Ye Myint gave a supplementary report. In the evening, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party visited the Mya Thalon Pagoda in Magway and offered flowers, water and scented sticks.

Next, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party proceeded to the office of Magway Division USDA and met with the association executives. Present were the association Secretary U Thwin Lin and executives and members of district/township/ward USDAs. Member of the Panel of Patrons of USDA (Central) Maj-Gen Ye Myint spoke of the need for USDA members to pay serious attention to the five major rural development tasks and to participate in carrying out these tasks with goodwill and Union Spirit in accordance with the future tasks laid down by the association. Secretary U Thwin Lin reported on work being carried out by the association. Commander Brig-Gen Ye Myint gave a supplementary report. Then, Maj-Gen Ye Myint cordially greeted the association members.

 On 25 February, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party arrived at the office of Natmauk Township Peace and Development Council in Magway Division where the township engineer U Ngwe Thaw and the district engineer U Kyaw Thaung reported on progress in construction of Yemon-Zeebyugon-Kyaukpadaung road section. Then, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected tarring and paving of gravel to the road section. Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected the earth road through Natmauk Township in Magway Division, Mahlaing , Wundwin and TadaU townships in Mandalay Division and arrived in Mandalay in the evening. While inspecting the earth road, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party cordially greeted local people, members of village Peace and Development Councils, USDA members and villagers and discussed durability of the road.

( 3Maj-Gen Maung Bo tours Papun, Hpa-an, Myawady in Kayin State

Yangon, 26 Feb- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Maung Bo of the Ministry of Defence, accompanied by officials, left Hpa-an for Papun by helicopter on 23 February afternoon. They were welcomed there by Tactical Operations Commander Col Khin Kyu of South-East Command, officials, local authorities and departmental officials. At Mohein Hall in Papun, Maj-Gen Maung Bo met with departmental officials and gave instructions on regional development matters. Chairman of Papun Township Peace and Development Council U Min Swe reported on progress in development of the township. Maj-Gen Maung Bo attended to their needs and gave instructions on smooth transportation, education, health, economic, social tasks and regional development to be carried out.

 Next, Maj-Gen Maung Bo and party left Papun and arrived back in Hpa-an in the afternoon. On 24 February morning, Maj-Gen Maung Bo and party went to Sasana Hitakari Mebaung Monastery in Hpa-an. They paid homage to State Ovadanariya Mebaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Indariya and donated provisions to the Sayadaw. Then, they arrived at Basic Education High School No 2 in Hpa-an to attend the opening ceremony of multimedia teaching centre of the school and unveiling ceremony of Myanmar education goal stone inscription.

They were welcomed there by members of Kayin State, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Working Committee for Women's Affairs, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, member of the School Board of Trustees, teachers and students, the band and dance troupes. First, outstanding students opened the stone inscriptions bearing Myanmar education goal and sang the song " Myanma School ".

 Then, the ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre of the school was held. Headmistress Daw Mya Mya Thi and Chairman of SBT U Ye Myint formally opened the multimedia classrooms. Next, Maj-Gen Maung Bo unveiled the signboard of the multimedia teaching centre of the school. Afterwards, Maj-Gen Maung Bo and party inspected performance of the students at the multimedia classrooms.

Maj-Gen Maung Bo and party also inspected the domestic science, agriculture and fine art room and accepted the gift presented by the students. Then, Maj-Gen Maung Bo viewed performance of the students at the music room. Then, the ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre and the stone inscription bearing Myanmar education goal followed at Padamya Hall of the school.

 Headmistress Daw Mya Mya Thi reported on construction of the multimedia teaching centre and the stone inscription. Chairman of SBT U Ye Myint reported on efforts made for emergence of the multimedia teaching centre. Tenth standard student Maung Saw Yazar Tun reported on implementation of the education goal. Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung gave instructions on matters related to the Myanmar education goal. Then, Maj-Gen Maung Bo presented teaching video tapes and books to the headmistress.

 Next, the donation ceremony was held. Maj-Gen Maung Bo accepted K 2.1 million donated by Kayin State Peace and Development Council, K 3 million by SBT and wellwishers and K 600,000 by Shwe Naygyi Co. He then gave instructions on uplift of education standard of the students. After the ceremony, Maj-Gen Maung Bo and party had the documentary photo taken together with the teachers, the students and the members of SBT. Maj-Gen Maung Bo and party went to Thingan-Nyinaung by helicopter and then proceeded to Myawady by car. At the Yeiktha of Myawady Township Peace and Development Council, Maj-Gen Maung Bo and party met with township authorities.

Chairman of Myawady District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Soe reported on development of Myawady Township. Maj-Gen Maung Bo fulfilled the requirements. At Thaungyin Hall of Myawady District Peace and Development Council, Maj-Gen Maung Bo and party met with district and township departmental officials, members of USDA, MCWA, WCWA, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades and left instructions on township development matters. Next, Maj-Gen Maung Bo inspected extended construction of Myawady Township Hospital visited the wards.

Afterwards, Maj-Gen Maung Bo and party inspected the site for construction of the new building of Myawady BEHS. Township Education Officer U Mahn Aung Pyi Soe and Headmistress Daw Tin Aye conducted them round the site. Then, Maj-Gen Maung Bo and party inspected the gymnasium of the township.

They also inspected repair of the archway at Myanmar-Thai Friendship Bridge and development tasks being undertaken in Myawady. Next, they arrived back in Hpa-an. In the evening, Member of the Panel of Patron of USDA (Central) Maj-Gen Maung Bo met with secretaries, executives, organizers and members of Hpa-an District, Township and Ward USDAs at Dawna Hall of Kayin State USDA Office and explained economic, social and political progress of the State and duty of the USDA members.

( 4Maj-Gen Aung Htwe and party pay obeisance to Maha Myatmuni Buddha Image in Leikha

Yangon, 26 Feb- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Aung Htwe of the Ministry of Defence and Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by Brig-Gen Thein Lwin of Loilem Station and officials, arrived at Leikha, Loilem District, Shan State (South), on 23 February evening.

 They were welcomed there by Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Brig-Gen Khin Maung Myint and officials. Then, Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, Commander Brig-Gen Khin Maung Myint, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and officials paid obeisance to Maha Myatmuni Buddha Image in Leikha and donated gold foils to the image. Next, Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, the Commander and the minister presented cash to the funds of the Image through the Pagoda Board of Trustees.

 Afterwards, Maj-Gen Aung Htwe and party went to PhaungdawU Kyaungtaik. They paid homage to Chairman of Leikha Township Sangha Nayaka Committee PhaungdawU Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kovida and members of the Sangha of monasteries in Leikha and took the Five Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannava of Okkyaung. Then, Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, Commander Brig-Gen Khin Maung Myint, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Brig-Gen Thein Lwin of Loilem Station and Command Staff Colonel of Eastern Command Col Win Hlaing offered provisions to the Sayadaws. Next, they shared merits gained after taking a sermon delivered by Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannava.

Yangon, 26 Feb- Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin received owner of Yangon Commercial Tower Managing Director Mr Toshio Yoneda of Hopeson Myanmar Co Ltd at his office at 1 pm today. Also present at the call were Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, Managing Director U Kyi Tun of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and officials.

Yangon, 26 Feb- Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay met Sri Lankan Ambassador Mr Ubhayasekara Mapa at his office at 10 am today. Also present at the call were YCDC members U Aung Soe, Col Thaung Wai, Col Tin Soe and heads of department and Adviser to the Mayor U Kyaw Shein.

Chief of Armed Forces Training meets parade grounds decoration work groups

Yangon, 26 Feb- Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Ceremony member of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Kyaw Win met with members of work groups for decoration of the parade grounds at the meeting hall of the Resistance Park where the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Parade will be held, at 3 pm today.

Also present at the meeting were Deputy Chiefs of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint and Brig-Gen Thein Swe, Vice-Chairman of the Parade Committee Parade Commander Brig-Gen Hla Tun, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint and officials of the work groups. At the meeting, Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Kyaw Win gave instructions on making
preparations for the parade grounds. Officials reported on progress of work and work to be done. The Chief of Armed Forces Training attended to their needs. Then, Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and party inspected the Resistance Park and the Myoma Grounds and gave necessary instructions.

( 6 Fifth Meeting of Directors-General of Civil Aviation Sub-Regional Air Transport Cooperation of CLMV held

Yangon, 26 Feb -The opening ceremony of the Fifth Meeting of Directors-General of Sub-Regional Air Transport Cooperation among Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myan-mar and Vietnam (CLMV) was held at the Sedona Hotel, here this morning.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Immigration and Population Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, deputy ministers, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, Ambassador of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham, Ambassador of Cambodia Mr Nim Chantara, Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Pham Quang Khon, directors-general and managing directors of the departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Transport, principals, the responsible officials and the delegates led by the directors-general of the Sub-Regional Air Transport of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe said he was glad to host the meeting. Efforts are to be made for aviation cooperation.

 There are many tourist destinations and places of cultural interest in Myanmar, he said. He invited the regular and chartered flights from Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam to the Yangon and Mandalay International Airports. Then, leaders of the respective delegations from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam spoke on the occasion. Afterwards, leaders of the respective delegations discussed matters related to co-operation in air transport at the meeting, which continues tomorrow.

Applications invited to Myanmar Maritime University, Myanmar Aerospace Engineering University

Yangon, 26 Feb- The Myanmar Maritime University under the Ministry of Transport will be opened in August 2002. A total of 100 students each for six five-year courses for BE (Naval Architecture), BE (Marine Engineering), BE (Port & Harbour Engineering), BE (River & Ocean Engineering), BE (Marine Electrical System & Electronics) and BSc/BSc (Hons) (Nautical Science) will be accepted at the university.

The Myanmar Aerospace Engineering University under the Ministry of Science and technology will be opened in August 2002. The university will accept 100 students each for three five-year courses for BE (Aerospace-Propulsion & Flight Vehicles), BE (Aerospace-Avionics) and BE (Aerospace-Electrical Systems and Instrumentation). Those who got 340 marks and above in the 2001 matriculation examination can submit applications to the Application Scrutinizing Board (Higher Education Department of Lower Myanmar), not later than 15 March 2002.

Commerce Minister meets exporters

Yangon, 25 Feb - Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone together with Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan arrived at the office of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Merchant Street, here and made a speech to entrepreneurs this afternoon. Present on the occasion were directors-general, managing directors, the president of the UMFCCI, vice-presidents, CEC members and exporters from Myanmar Fishery Federation, Myanmar Rice Merchants Association, Myanmar Beans and Pulses Merchants Association, Fishery/Prawn and Timber Association. President U Win Myint of the UMFCCI reported on undertakings of the federation. Then, Chairman of Panel of Patrons of the federation Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone explained seeking means and ways to boost export to the entrepreneurs. Afterwards, those present took part in the discussions and the meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister and the president.

( 7 ) 7th Buddha Pujaniya of Maha Wizaya Pagoda opened

Yangon, 26 Feb- The opening ceremony of 17th Buddha Pujaniya of Maha Wizaya Pagoda was held in conjunction with the Htamane (sticky rice) Preparing Contest at the southern archway of the pagoda this afternoon, attended by Chairman of Maha Wizaya Pagoda Construction Committee Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Myint Swe. Also present were Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Defence Services Records Office Commandant and No 4 Military Region Commander Brig-Gen Myo Myint, No 3 Military Region Commander Col Yan Naing Oo, authorities, officials, members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees, the chairman of organizing committee for Htamane Preparing Contest, Htamane Preparing teams and guests.

The commander, the minister and party opened the ceremony by reciting Namo Tassa three times. The commander, leader of the Pagoda Board of Trustees Chairman of Yangon Division All Bus Lines Control Committee Lt-Col Phone Kyaw (Retd) and Chairman of Yangon West District Chairman of the organizing committee for Htamane Preparing Contest Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein opened the Buddha Pujaniya and the Htamane Preparing Contest. Then, the commander, the minister and party visited the Gandhakuti Taik of the pagoda.

 The commander offered fruits and lights to the pagoda. Next, the commander, the minister and party went round the pagoda and watched the contest. A total of 39 Htamane Preparing teams are taking part in the contest. After the contest, Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein and officials presented first, second and third prizes to Ahlon Township, Pabedan Township and Kamayut Township respectively. The Buddha Pujaniya will be held up to 28 February. During the Pujaniya period, fruits, 5,000 oil lights will be offered to the pagoda. Altogether 25 wut associations will recite religious verses. Tipitakadhara Sayadaws will administer Dhamma Desanas (sermons) and the con-secration ceremony for the pagoda will be held.

Payment of hotel taxes scrutinized

Yangon, 26 Feb - A Scrutiny Committee for ensuring payment of taxes by hotels with cent per cent foreign investment in Myanmar scrutinized the payment of taxes for the Novotel Hotel, Sedona Hotel and Swan Hotel in Mandalay on 23 and 24 February. The committee comprises Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Managing Director of Border Trade Department U Nay Win, Director of Customs Department U Than Nyunt and Director of Internal Revenue Department U Win Maung. The committee urged the hoteliers to pay taxes in full regularly and helped overcome their sector wise difficulties.

Basic Multimedia System Development Course opened

Yangon, 26 Feb - The opening of CICC On-site Training on " Basic Multimedia System Development " Course, organized by Myanmar Computer Scientists Association and sponsored by the Center of the International Cooperation for Computerization (CICC), Japan, was held at Myan- mar Information and Communication Technology Park Building at 9 am yesterday. ( 8 ) 24th Inter-State / Division Golf Team Championship continues

Yangon, 26 Feb -The 24th Inter-State and Division Golf Team Championship organized by the Sports and Physical Education Department and Myanmar Golf Federation and mainly sponsored by Isuzu Motors Ltd, Japan, continued for the second day at Yangon Golf Club in Danyingon here this morning. Among the spectators were MGF President Brig-Gen Win Hlaing, General Secretary U Aung Kyi and executives, guests and fans. After the second round, Yangon Division team was leading the tournament with 463 strokes, followed by Bago Division team with 474, Mandalay Division team with 475, Magway Division team with 491 and Shan State (South) team with 505 in the team scratch event. In team handicap event, Kachin State team stood at the first position with total nett 407 strokes, Taninthayi Division team the second with 414, Mandalay Division team the third with 418, Mon State team the fourth with 423 and Magway Division team the fifth with 424.

 Aung San Win of Yangon Division was leading with all total 149 strokes, followed by Zaw Win (Bago) and Thein Zaw (Yangon) with 152 each, Kyaw Thiha (Magway) with 157 and Aye Ko (Mandalay) with 158 in the men's individual scratch event. In men's individual handicap event, Tun Shan of Taninthayi Division was leading with 134 strokes, followed by That Naing Win (Kachin) with 135, Yaw Ba (Kachin) and Zaw Min (Ayeyawady) with 137 each, Aye Chan (Taninthayi) and Myo Naing (Mon) with 139 each. The championship continues tomorrow.

Myanmar and Indonesia to meet in semi-final

Yangon, 26 Feb - The semi-final matches of the first ASEAN Youth (U-17) Soccer Tournament for the year 2002 will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 28 February. In the first match of semi-final, the selected Myanmar youth team will play against the second of group-B Indonesia youth team at 5.30 pm Malaysia Standard Time. The host Malaysia team will meet the first of group-B Lao youth team in the second match on that day.

( 9 ) MWJA Central Executive Committee meets

Yangon, 26 Feb - The meeting (2/2002) of the Central Executive Committee of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association was held at the meeting hall of the MWJA this afternoon, attended by Chairman of MWJA U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung), Vice Chairmen U Tin Kha (Takkatho Tin Kha), U Than Maung (Than Maung) and U Myint Thein (Myint Thein Aung), Secretary U Hla Tun (Hla Tun- Twantay) and central executive committee members.

U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung) presided over the meeting and CEC member U Khin Swe (Shwe Sun Nyo) acted as the master of ceremonies. First, Meeting Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung) made an opening address and Secretary U Hla Tun reported on the implementation of the resolutions of the CEC meeting (1/2002). Then, office group and central work group reported on matters related to the organization, finance, publishing, funds and international relations. The meeting came to a close with a concluding remark by the Meeting Chairman U Hla Myaing. Hailing the 3rd MWJA Conference, CEC member Daw Khin Khin Sein (Yuwady Khin Sein Hlaing) donated K 10,000 to MWJA.

Poppy fields destroyed in Laukkai, Kongyan townships

Yangon, 26 Feb - Tatmadaw columns in cooperation with local national races have destroyed poppy fields and raided the camps where drugs are produced yearly. In June 2001, altogether 219 men and 13 women totalling 232 were arrested in Laukkai in Kokang Region by members of Special Region-1, in Shan State (North) for elimination of drugs and peace and tranquillity of the region. In cooperation with members of Drug Elimination Group, action was taken against production, storage and purchasing of drugs with added momentum at border area and in the region since September 2001.

This year, Tatmadaw-men, members of Special Region-1 in Shan State (North) and local people destroyed 2011.25 acres of poppy fields from 23 January to 19 February 2002. At present, the Government in cooperation with national race leaders made arrangement for extended cultivation of poppy substitute crops such as mango, cashew, orange, lychee, pineapple, corn, walnut, sweet nut, tea, paddy, sugar cane and rubber and extended breeding of cattle and fish for the convenience of local people in Kokang region. Moreover, in cooperation with Japan, as poppy substitute crop, buckwheat has been cultivated on a commercial scale. In 2000, 1,650 acres of buckwheat had been grown in the region and over 3,500 acres of land had been put under buckwheat in 2001-2002. The Japanese Government presented ´ 800 million for the development of Kokang region and the project to upgrade Laukkai-Kongyan Road and install power line in Kyashishu Village has been implemented.
