(1) Government spends huge sums of funds to ensure better transport in Rakhine State

YANGON, 19 Jan.- Rakhine State Union Solidarity and Development Association held a mass rally to  support the national and rural development tasks of the Government at the ground near  Minkyaung  Bridge Ahmyintkyun Village in Sittway Township on 14 January morning.

Over 10,450 members of USDA from townships in Sittway, MaraukU, Ponnagyun, Pauktaw,  Kyauktaw, Minbya, Myebon, Rathedaung, Maungtaw, Buthidaung, Thandwe, Taungup, Kyaukpyu,  Gwa, Yanbye, Manaung and An in Sittway District, Maungtaw District, Thandwe District and  Kyaunkjpyu District marched in Mayghawady, Dwarawady, Ranmawady ant Dhanyawady columns to  the grounds.

Rakhine State USDA Secretary U Oo Kyaw Yin presided over the rally together with Rakhine State  USDA Executive U Min Min Kyaw, ant Sittway District USDA Secretary U Tun Win. Rakhine State  USDA Executive Daw Myint Myint Tha acted as master of ceremonies and Gwa Township USDA  Executive Daw Su Hlaing Win acted as co-master of ceremonies. Secretary U Oo Kyaw Yin made an  opening speech.

Then, Thanwe township USDA Secretary U Sann Lwin tabled the motion calling for participation of  USDA members in rural development tasks.

He said that the Government is implementing the annual health plan. The tasks to give oral polio vaccine  to under- 5 children was carried out for the seventh time, All  over the country this year. Groups at the  different levels of USDA, together with officials of the Health Department, participated in the project. In  the agriculture sector, the conventional cultivation system in Rakhine State has been turned into double  cropping with the aid of irrigation facilities to uplift the living standard of the people in rural areas. The  main agricultural produce such as paddy, pulses and beans and other crops are being cultivated on a  commercial scale. In the livestock breeding sector which is connected with the agricultural sector, the  fresh and sea water prawn breeding tasks are being extensively carried out in Rakhine State at present.  Due to foreign exchange earned from the prawn breeding tasks, the economic status of breeders  increases quickly. Now, there are over 80,000 acres of prawn breeding ponds in Rakhine State. It is a  pride for Rakhine State to be able to engage in the prawn breeding tasks more than other states and  divisions. In conclusion, he said five rural development tasks are the basic requirement of the State. Only  when these tasks can be successfully carried out, will the gap between rural and urban areas be  decreased and poverty
alleviated.

Therefore, he said, he table the motion calling for participation of USDA members in rural development  tasks. Afterwards, Rakhine State USDA Executive Daw Swe Swe Than seconded the motion tabled by  Thandwe District USDA Secretary U Sann Lwin calling for participation of USDA members in rural  development tasks. She said that many villages in Rakhine State cannot use sufficient water from the  wells since the state is located in the salty water area. So, rural people's availability of drinking water  relied on the lakes which stored rain water. Now, four dams have been built in Rakhine State by the  Government with a view to ensuring availability of sufficient drinking water. Moreover, arrangements are  being made to build two dams and embankments stretching over 200 miles were also built to prevent  the flow of salty water. USDA members and rural people cooperated in sinking tube-wells and  hand-pumps and plans to sink more wells are under way. Under the cooperation programme between  the Government and UN, 150 upgraded lakes, 274 shallow wells, five deep wells and 61 artesian wells,  totalling 490 were sunk in Rakhine State from 1997-98 to 2000-2001 for water supply in the rural  areas.

With a view to ensuring smooth transportation in rural areas of Rakhine State, the Government has spent  a large sums of funds in construction of tarred roads, gravel roads and earth roads. Moreover, the  tarred road stretching 8.5 miles, gravel road stretching 123 miles and six furlongs and earth road  stretching 64 miles and five furlongs have been built in rural areas. As a result of the endeavours of the  State, today's transportation between rural and urban areas is better than in the past. Regarding  education sector, there were over 2,300 basic education high, middle and primary schools in 1988. In  2001, there were over 2,600 basic education high, middle and primary schools had been in existence.

As 11 e-education learning centres were opened, new generation youths can learn information and
technology subjects to keep abreast of the time. Similarly, the Government has opened 30 basic  education high, middle and primary schools in the border areas of Rakhine State with emphasis on  development of border areas and national races. In the health sector, eight township hospitals (16-bed),  23 station hospitals, 99 rural health care units and 396 rural health care branches were opened. At  present, the Government laid down plans for the children to be free from polio disease and gave the oral  polio vaccine to children under-5 for the seventh time in the rural areas of Rakhine State. In the livestock  breeding sector, sea prawn breeding benefit the local people in the state in earning more foreign  exchange than other tasks.  Prawn is being bred in over 80,000 acres of ponds in Rakhine State and it is the largest amount of acres  in the country. Then, the mass rally passed the resolutions in support of the State's development tasks,  rural development tasks laid down by the State and participation of USDA members in national and  rural development tasks. Later, the rally came to an end with chanting of the slogans.


(2) Appointment of Ambassador agreed on

YANGON, 19 Jan.- The Government of the Union of Myanmar has agreed to the appointment of Mr  Tewfik Abada as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Democratic Republic  of Algeria to the Union of Myanmar in succession to He Mr Maamar Ahmed. Mr Tewfik Abada will be  concurrently accredited to the Union of Myanmar with residence in Hanoi, Vietnam. He is married and  has two children.

Minister receives Japanese guest

YANGON, 19 Jan.- Minister for Education U Than Aung received Executive Managing Director Mr Teruo  Masuda of the Non-Profit  Organization "JVA ( Japan International  Volunteer Association ) at the  Diamonds Jubilee Hall of Yangon University yesterday afternoon. Also present were Duty minister U  Myo Nyunt, directors- general under the ministry and officials of Japanese Embassy. JVA will build an  extension to No 41 Primary school  in North Okkalapa Township. The No 29 primary school in  Mingaladon Township was built by JVA in 2001.

Ninth e-ASEAN Working Group Meeting concludes

YANGON, 19 Jan.- The Ninth e-ASEAN Working Group Meeting of ASEAN countries continued for the  second and final day at Myanmar Information and Communication Technology Park in Hlaing Township  this morning.

Officials of ASEAN Secretariat and representatives of the e-ASEAN Working Group participated in  the implementation of future tasks included in e-ASEAN Framework Agreement and signed the  agreement. The meeting ended in the afternoon. The third demonstration of e-ASEAN Road show was  held at Myanmar ICT Park in the afternoon.

Present were Vice-Chairman of e-National Task Force Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and  Resettlement U Hlaing Win, members of e-National . Task Force, Chairman of e-ASEAN  Working  Group and members, members of e-ASEAN Task Force, officials of Myanmar Information and  Communication Development Company, officials of Myanmar Computer Scientists Association and  guests.

Deputy Minister U Hlaing Win and Chairman of e-ASEAN Working Group Dr Pichet Durongkaveroj,  Vice-Chairman of Multimedia Development Corporation of Malaysia member of e-ASEAN Task  Force Dr M Ghazie Ismail spoke on the occasion. ICT Project of Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and  Myanmar, ASEAN Training Network, ASEAN Regional Internet Exchange, e-Farmers, ASEAN  e-Tourism Portal, Presentation Smart Transact W e- ASEAN Com, i-Venture ASEAN Voice Net  were demonstrated.

Outstanding students honoured

YANGON, 19 Jan.- A ceremony to present prizes to outstanding students, who are children of Tatmadaw  families of the Ministry of Defence (Army, Navy and Air), was held at the hall of the ministry today,  attended by Maj-Gen. Thura Shwe Mann of the Ministry of Defence. Also present were directors and  officials of offices and departments under the ministry, parents and outstanding students.  First, members  of the State Peace and Development Council Maj- Gen. Thura Shwe Mann spoke on the occasion.  Thon, Maj- Gen. Thura Shwe Mann, directors and senior officers presented prizes to outstanding students 68 primary school students, 19 middle school students, 9 high school students (9th standard),  23 high school students (l0th standard) and 18 university/ college students totalling 137.


(3)  More rover-crossing bridges being built at all necessary places to set up nation-wide transport network

Donthami rail-cum-road bridge linking Kayin and Mon States on Yangon- Hpa-an Road  commissioned into service

YANGON, 19 Jan. -A rail-cum-road bridge on Donthami river connecting Kayin ant Mon States was  commissioned into service this morning.

The 600-foot-10ng bridge was opened near Duyinseik village in Thathon Township, Yangon-Hpa-an  Road, it has a 13-footwide motorway flanked by 4foot pedestrian lanes on both sides. Construction of  the bridge started on I April 2000 and completed on 20 December 2001. Its clearance is six feet high  and 77 feet wide.

Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command  Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Aung and Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung formally opened the  bridge.

Also present were Chairman of Kayin State Peace and Development Council Col Maung Shein, heads  of  department of the Ministry of Rail Transportation, departmental personnel, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Women's Affair  Committee, Red Cross, Auxiliary Fire Brigade and social organizations, nurses, band troupes, Kayin  traditional dance troupes, royal drum troupes, students, and local people totalling. over 6,000.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister U Pan Aung said it depends much on the transport to successfully  realize the 12 objectives in a short period.

He quoted Head of State Senior General Than Shwe as Saying "The government is striving for
development of the transport infrastructure which is the main requirement for socio-economic progress  of  the citizens. Transport development has contributed not only to further improvement of trade and  production, but also to development of the socio-economy and mutual relations of the people. A  network of motor roads and railroads which were built under the strategic plans have  become the  Union highways. At the same time ports have been upgraded and new airports extended. More  river-crossing bridges have been built at all necessary places to set up a transport  system linking all the  regions of the nation." He said the Senior General has given much priority to the transport sector,  quoting another guidance of the Head of State as saying, "A bridge can be used one day earlier and will  benefit the people one day sooner, if it can be completed one day ahead of the targeted period."

The minister said the reinforced concrete bridge has 100 feet long spans. In accord with the guidance,  engineers and staff of Myanma Railways have made overtime efforts to complete the facility within 20  months. Of  the many bridges the government has built in the entire nation, Thanlwin River Bridge  (Hpa-an) between Hpa-an and Myainggalay,  Gyaing River Bridge (Gyaing-Zathabyin) connecting the  state with Mawlamyine, Hlaingwa Creek Bridge between Mudon and Myawady, Mekane Creek  Bridge, and Gyaing River Bridge (Gyaing-Kawkareik Bridge) on Hpa-an-KawkareikMyawady road  are in Kayin State. The 7,200-foot bridge of Thanlwin River which will include both motor rail roads inking Mottama and Mawlamyine is under construction.

He thanked MR staff ant exports of the project, local  people and departmental personnel for their
harmonious efforts to build the bridge of Commander Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Aung said it was the
ceremony to inaugurate the second rail-cum-road Donthami Bridge linking Kayin and Mon States and  to open renovated ThatonMyaing-galay Railroad. The Thaton-Myainggalay Railroad was opened in  1988. Only the rail car could use the bridge. Progress has been made in the state due to the  establishment of factories and workshops, Therefore, the rail-cum-road Donthami Bridge was built and  Thaton Myzinggalay Railroad was renovated, he said.

He quoted Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe as saying  that there was fewer contacts among the people of different regions and development gap due to  transport difficulty. That is why bridges are being built, he said.

The Attaran Steel Suspension Bridge and Gyaing-Zathabyin Suspension Bridge were opened in Mon  State with the guidance of the Senior General. Now Ye River Bridge which plays vital robe in  Ye-Dawei Railroad is being built. And Thanlwin River Bridge (Mawlunyino) which will be the longest bridge in Myanmar is also under construction, In 2001-2002, 116 miles of rural roads wore  constructed, In the whole country altogether 136 bridges including 180 foot-long and above bridges  were built, There were 2,793 miles of railroads in the past and now there are 3,859 miles.

With the smooth and secure transport, there will be close relationship and flourishing of Union Spirit in  the region. The government haws laid down the twelve political economic and social objectives and is  implementing them with added momentum, up holding  Our Three Main National Causes, Therefore living  standard of the people has now improved.

He s8id Ch8irman Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance on five tasks on rural development. Now  one and all can hear and see the mass rallies to support national development and rural development  tasks everywhere.

The commander said the government is building roads and bridges that contribute towards national
development and national solidarity as a national task.

He thanked engineers, workers, service personnel and departments that rendered assistance to the
construction of the bridge. He said the bridge would contribute towards raising the development
momentum of the Union and improvement of socio-economic life of the national people. Col Maung  Shein said the government is striving to build a peaceful modern and developed nation, ensuring a
proportionate progress among all the urban, rural and border areas of the nation. Local products will  reach markets in time only if there is a good transport. The government is also fulfilling the requirements  of the health and education sectors. As peace and stability is prevailing in Kayin State more roads and  bridges are being constructed in the region. Due to the completion of the bridges and roads, smooth and  speedy transport can be ensured in the entire nation including Kayin State. Smooth and speedy  transport has also led to fostering Union Spirit and economic progress. At present the government is  implementing the rural development programmes. U Than Tun of Mon State and U Ngwe Than of  Kayin State, on behalf of the local people, spoke words of thanks. Minister U Pan Aung unveiled the  plaque.


(4) LPDR goodwill delegation concludes visit

YANGON, 19 Jan. -At the invitation of Deputy-Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, after  paying a goodwill visit, member of the Central Executive Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary  Party, Governor of the Borikhamxay Province of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Thongbanh  Sengaphone and wife Madame Thonglaou Sengaphone and party left here by air this morning. The  delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Director-General of the Protocol  Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Thura U Aung Htet, Director-General of the Political  Department U Thaung Tun, officials of the ministry, Charge' d' Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the LPDR  Mr Khamsouay Keodalavong and Lao Embassy officials.


(5)  Minister inspects production of generators

YANGON, 19 Jan. - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen. Saw Lwin arrived at No-2 Machine Tools Factory  of the Myanma Machine Tool and Electrical Industries on Parami Road in Hline Township yesterday  afternoon. The minister was welcomed there by Deputy Minister Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw and directors-general and managing directors of the ministry. Then, the minister inspected the production of  generators (5 KVA up to 50 KVA) and test running of the production of 75 KVA and 100 KVA  generators. The minister was conducted round the factory by the deputy minister and Managing Director  U Kyaw Win of MMTEI. The minister left instructions on timely production of generators meeting the  set standard.

Mettananda Free Clinic and Library opened

YANGON, 19 Jan.-A ceremony to open Mettananda Free Clinic and Library was held at Ngakyanpyan  (Dawei) Sasana Yeiktha on Dhamma-yon Street in 16/3 Ward, Thingangyun Township, this morning.  Present were Sayadaw Bhaddanta Dhammapiya (MA USA) of Mettananda Vihara Dhamma Yeiktha,  Freemount City, California, officials, physicians, nurses, wellwishers and guests. Managing Director U  Tin Kha of News and Periodicals Enterprise formally opened the clinic. The clinic was opened at a  capital of K 3 million. Free medical treatment will be given to members of the Sangha, nuns,  ushers-into-heaven and the needy. In charge of the clinic Dr Myat Aung and Dr Daw Than Myint will  give medical treatments to patients from 10 am to 12 noon on Mondays and Fridays. Then, Writer Chit  San Win formally opened the library. The library was opened at a capital of K 3 million with the aim of  developing language skills and general knowledge of the users. It will be opened five days a week  except Mondays and Thursdays for free use.


(6) Maj-Gen. Soe Win meets USDA members in Mandalay, Sagaing Divisions

YANGON, 19 Jan.- State Peace and Development Council Member Maj-Gen. Soe Win of the Ministry of  Defence met with Union Solidarity and Development Association members of Meiktila District and  Meiktila Township at Kandaw Mingala Hall in Meiktila on 13 January morning and gave necessary   instructions for USDA members' active participation in national and rural development tasks. He also  fulfilled the requirements. On 16 January, Maj-Gen. Soe Win and party inspected the Myoma village  road construction site on Monywa-Kalaywa highway.

On 17 January morning, Maj-Gen. Soe Win, together with Deputy Commander of North-West
Command Brig-Gen. Soe Myint and Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Secretary  Lt-Col Ye Htut, met with District / Township USDA members in Sagaing Division at Zeya Thiri Hall in  Monywa and discussed matters on national and rural development tasks. Maj-Gen. Soe Win,
accompanied by Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Central Command
Commander Brig-Gen. Ye Myint, met with District / Township USDA members in Mandalay Division at  the office of Mandalay Division USDA on 18 January morning. Maj-Gen. Soe Win gave instructions on  transport, education, health, sufficiency of drinking water as well as agriculture and livestock breeding  for promoting the living standard of rural people. He also fulfilled the needs. At 3 p.m., he met with  Mogok Township USDA members at the same venue and spoke words of encouragement.

National races visit Defence Services Museum

YANGON, 19 Jan. - At the invitation of Chairman of the Working Committee for Development of
Border  Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin  Nyunt, a study group of Mro and Khami national races from Buthidaung and Maungtaw townships in  Rakhine State, visiting here to pay homage to famous pagodas and to study the development of the  State, visited the Defence Services Museum this morning and they were conducted round the museum  by responsible officials. Afterwards, the study group proceeded to the Drug Elimination Museum at the  corner of Hanthawady and Kyundaw roads. In the afternoon, the study group visited Myanmar Radio  and  Television.  They were welcomed there by Director-General U Khin Maung Htay of MRTV and the   function of MRTV were demonstrated to them with the aid of video tapes. Then, the study group  proceeded to the Thamada Cinema Hall and watched movie.


(7) Union Day Dinner Entertainment Sub-committee meets

YANGON, 19 Jan. -Sub-committee for Entertainment at the 55th Anniversary Union Day Dinner held a  meeting at the Ministry of Culture on 17 January afternoon. Present on the occasion were Chairman of  the sub-committee Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Secretary of the sub-committee  Director-General of Fine Arts Department U Kyaw Win, Director of Myanmar Radio and Television U  Ko Ko Htwe, musicians Bogalay Tint Aung, Academy Gitalulin U Ko Ko, Vice-Chairman of Myanma  Motion Picture Asiayon U Myint Naing and members of the sub-committee. Chairman of the  sub-committee Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt made an opening speech. Those present held  discussions on entertainment programmes to be presented at the National Theatre on 13 and 14  February. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by Deputy Minister U Soe Nyunt.


(8) Yangon Command Commander tours Twantay Township

YANGON, 19 Jan.-Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Yangon  Command Commander Brig-Gen. Myint Swe inspected agriculture and livestock breeding  works and regional development tasks in Twantay Township, Yangon South District, this  morning. Accompanied by Secretary of the Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint and members, and  departmental officials, the commander arrived at Twantay at 8.30 am. Then, he proceeded to  Shwemayin region where fish breeding ponds are being undertaken by Yangon Command. At  the briefing hall, in-charge of the breeding farm Maj Thet Hlaing reported on digging of fish  breeding ponds, and breeding and marketing of fish.

Head of Twantay Township Fisheries Department U Tin Maung Maung reported on breeding  of fish on 24,865 acres of fish breeding ponds in Shwe-mayin, Pathi, Adun Pyattha-taik,  Mepyekyun, Yangon Pauk and other regions. Next, Head of Yangon Division Fisheries  Department U Khin Maung Win gave a supplementary report. The commander gave  instructions on extension of fish breeding ponds from 41,549 acres to 50,000 acres in Yangon  Division next year. Efforts are now being made for supplying sufficient  fish and meat to  Yangon city dwellers and earn foreign exchange through exporting surplus. The commander  also attended to the needs.

Afterwards, the commander and party inspected breeding of fish on over 900 acres of  breeding ponds in  Shwemayin region. The commander gave instructions on planting of coconut  palms, drumsticks, paukpan-byu, papaya and banana on the embankments of the fish breeding  ponds. Next, the commander inspected catching of fish from 200-acre land of breeding ponds  of U Ba Thet, and gave instructions. At the office of Twantay Township Peace and  Development Council, the commander met with township level departmental officials from  Twantay, Kawhmu, Kungyangon, Dalla and Seikkyi Khanaungto townships. He said that  Yangon South District is reliable region for the agriculture and livestock breeding sector. He  urged officials to strive for development of their respective townships.

As regards rural development, focus should be made at developing education, health and  transport
sectors; ensuring the prevalence of peace and tranquillity and the rule of law and  enhancing the economic development. Yangon South District Peace and Development Council  Chairman Lt-Col Sein Hlaing reported on matters relating to the district. Township Peace and  Development Council chairmen of Kun-gyangon, Kawhmu, Dalla, Seikkyi Khanaungto and  Twantay townships reported matters on agriculture and regional development works of their  respective townships. The commander gave necessary instructions and fulfilled the  requirements. This year, Yangon South District has put 66,631 acres under summer paddy,  245,905 acres under pulses and beans and 34,316 acres under oil crops.


(9)  Drug control measures co-ordinated

YANGON, 19 Jan.-A coordination meeting on cooperation of Myanma-Thai narcotic drugs control works  was held at the office of Tachilek anti-drugs (special) squad in Tachilek yesterday afternoon. It was  attended by Myanmar delegation led by Secretary of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Police  Maj-Gen. Soe Win and Thai delegation led by General Secretary of Thailand Narcotic Drug Control Mr  Kitti Limchaikit.

At the meeting, Police Maj-Gen. Soe Win mentioned that cordial discussions with leaders of Thailand  were made during the goodwill visit of the delegation led by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and  Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt to Thailand and the visit of CCDAC Chairman Minister for  Home Affairs to ministerial-level drug control meeting of Myanmar, China, Laos and Thailand held in  Beijing in August 2001. As a result, Wa region development plan has been co-ordinated between the  two countries. The two delegations visited Yawngkha village at 9 am today and discussed regional  development tasks with Wa national race leader U Pauk Yuyi. They left the village at 10 am.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Foreign monks, nuns and laymen who apply for one-year Diploma course must have passed at least the  Matriculation or  equivalent. For the layman who is Myanmar citizen must have their first degree, B.A. or  B.Sc. Myanmar monks and nuns who apply for  Diploma course must not be younger than 18 and not  older than 45. Age limit for students who apply for one-year Diploma course only will be given consideration. The Selection Board reserves the right to decide whether a particular applicant has met the  requirements or not.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

Foreign candidates are required to sit for the written examination at the Embassy of Myanmar in country  of their residence, or at the  examination centre in Yangon, Myanmar. There will be two question papers,  namely, one on English proficiency and the other on general Knowledge relevant to Buddhism. The  closing date for submitting application form for Diploma course is 15th December 2001.  The written  entrance examination for Diploma course will be held on 8th January 2002. A candidate  who passes the  written examination must sit  for personal interview at the Embassy of Myanmar in the country of their  residence before joining the University. The admission policy of the University is  liberal and flexible  enough to get the qualified students for Diploma course. Priority will be givento foreign students.  The  students who joins the University is required to bring a proper medical certificate recently taken from any  recognized authority showing physical and mental fitness.

VISA & OTHER EXPENSES

Once a foreign student is admitted to the Diploma course, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will take care  of visa application and its extension. Tuition, boarding  and messing for foreign students will be provided  free by the University. Travelling expenses for joining the University will not be borne by the University.
