YANGON, 2 Jan. - Mr Oleg V Kabanov, newly accredited Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the  Union of Myanmar, presented his credentials to Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace  and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 10  am today. Also present on the occasion were State Peace and Development Council Secretary-1 Lt-Gen.  Khin Nyunt, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win and  Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.


(2) Secretary-1 receives Vietnamese delegation

YANGON, 2 Jan. - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and  Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Lt-Gen. Khin  Nyunt received visiting Chairman of the Council of  Nationalities of Vietnam National Assembly of the Socialist  Republic of Vietnam Mr Cu Hoa Van and party at the guest  house of the Ministry of Defence this evening.

Also present at the call together with Secretary-1 of the State  Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt were  Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for  progress of Border Areas and National Races and  Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Social  Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and for Immigration and Population Maj-Gen. Sein Htwa, Deputy  Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura  U Aung Htet. The visiting delegation was accompanied by Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of  Vietnam to Myanmar Mr Pham Quang Khon.


(3) Pyinnya Tazaung Association publishing " Pyinnya Tazaung ", other teaching-learning  periodicals to contribute towards emergence of well-rounded education

YANGON, 2 Jan..- A ceremony to open the Golden Jubilee  Celebration of Pyinnya Tazaung was held at the hall of  Myanmar Educational Research Bureau on Pyay Road in  Kamayut Township at 8 am today, with an address by  Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of  the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin  Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were Chairman of Yangon  Division Peace and Development Council
Commander  Brig-Gen. Myint Swe, the ministers, the Attorney-General, the  Auditor-General, the
Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, the deputy ministers,  officials of the State Peace  and Development Council Office, directors-general and chairmen of  departments and boards under the  Ministry of Education, rectors of universities, deputy directors-general,  the chairman and Central  Executive Committee members of Myanmar Writers and Journalists  Association, honorary patrons of  Pyinnya Tazaung Association, the chairman and executives of the  association, writers of the Pyinnya  Tazaung magazine, the Golden Jubilee Magazine Committee and  editors, officials, guests and students of  Yangon Institute of Education.

First, Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development   Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt delivered an opening address. He said: At present, the entire nation is  making  collective efforts to enhance the national education level; holding of the Golden Jubilee of the  Pyinnya  Tazaung Association and the Pyinnya Tazaung magazine (The Light of Education) amounts to  honouring  the firm and consolidated education association for its efforts to strive for progress of  Myanmar's  education sector for half a century. It is also an honour for the Pyinnya Tazaung Association  for its dutiful  efforts to publish the Pyinnya Tazaung magazine (The Light of Education) for 50 years  since 1952 with  sincere goodwill.

Uplift of the education of the entire nation plays a pivotal role for progress of the nation and the race; all   the education staff today have already accepted the fact that the main responsibility lies with the education   staff to uplift the national education. Endeavours to develop the education sector include all-round efforts   to link the school education and the social conditions with the aim of developing the education sector in   conformity with the process of communal progress; the education development also calls for efforts to link   the formal and non-formal education and for emergence of a learning society.

Uplift of the intellectual level, enrichment of knowledge and possession of correct thoughts in relation to   educational studies, motivation of the will and exerting efforts to pursue education are also vital for   emergence of a learning society. In other words, it can be said that the task to link the respective sectors   within the scopes of the school education and the human society together with promotion of the  intellectual  level of the teachers and the students are also important. Since its founding, the association  has been  serving as a beacon of the education sector in accord with the motto " Panna Sama Abha Natthi"  meaning  there is no brighter light than the light of education.

In addition to its support to the education sector, the association has also promoted the qualifications of  the  teaching staff. It has helped solve the difficulties of teachers and uplift their spirit. It has brought out   writers who can give various categories of artistic value and knowledge not only to teachers, but also to   students. The Pyinnya Tazaung magazine is the oldest periodical of the nation's education sector, serving   the sector's interests throughout the successive eras. It has been recorded as a magazine which has fine   historical, educational, literary traditions. Since the start of publishing the magazine, the association was   formed to systematically manage the education development tasks.

The association has been striving for progress of the education for 50 years. The aims of the association   are: to assist in the realization of formal and non-formal education development activities of the country;  to  build and upgrade the capacity of teaching-learning process and the qualifications of teachers and to   enable teachers and education personnel of the country to be familiar with modern education thoughts and   practices; to assist in developing formal and non-formal teaching-learning process and in conducting   research work; and to cooperate with governmental, non-governmental and international agencies or   organizations from time to time in promoting the education development of the country. In accord with  the  aims, the association is publishing its monthly magazine " Pyinnya Tazaung ", teaching-learning aid  journals  and other periodicals, pictures and charts contributing towards emergence of a well-rounded  education.

The association is also holding literary contests and donating books and teaching aids to schools of
border  areas annually, and has set up its own library. It is also providing books to libraries of the
Information and  Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Information and cooperating with
international  organizations to serve the interests of the education sector. In other words, it has set up an education  media network in serving the national interests from the respective sector. The Secretary-1 praised all  personnel and writers for their greater performance in Pyinnya Tazaung Educational Magazine for 50  years in education sector with noble goodwill and sense of duty.

Now the government is implementing national education promotion special four-year project with
momentum and also undertaking the long-term education project systematically in order to emerge an  education system that can create a learning society and can face the challenges of knowledge age, he  said. He spoke of the need for personnel of the Pyinnya Tazaung Magazine to participate in the  educational tasks of the government. He urged all to make efforts for keeping abreast with international  science and technological development process and for enhancement of intellectual and reasoning power  of students, teachers and literary enthusiasts in accord with lofty objectives of the Pyinnya Tazaung  Magazine that promoted the light of education for over 50 years.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged Pyinnya Tazaung Magazine to make continued efforts for
realization  of the objectives of Pyinnya Tazaung Committee, to participate in successful implementation of the  government's national education projects, to raise educational activities for realization of national objectives  and to preserve the light of education forever in accord with its noble tradition. After the ceremony, the  Secretary-1 posed for the documentary photo together with members of Myanmar Education Committee  and members of Pyinnya Tazaung Association. Next, the Secretary-1 and party and guests viewed  Pyinnya Tazaung magazines and Pyinnya Tazaung special books published within 50 years, Pyinnya  Tazaung teaching aid charts, National Literary Award winning books of Pyinnya Tazaung writers,  documentary photos in the 50-year-journey of Pyinnya Tazaung, photos of Sayagyis who discharged duties  of Pyinnya Tazaung during 50 years, educational documents and the paper on 30-year education project of  Myanmar.


(4) Commerce Minister receives German guests

YANGON, 2 Jan.. - Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone received Managing Director of Siemens  Ltd  of Germany Dr Sepp E Tietze and party at his office at 12.30 p.m. today. Present at the call were  Deputy  Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Kyaw Hsan, Director-General of the Directorate of Trade U  Nyunt  Aye and departmental officials.

 Minister receives Korean Ambassador

YANGON, 2 Jan.. - Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen. Thein Zaw received   Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Mr Chung Jung-gum at his office at 2 p.m. today. Also present were   officials of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications.

Vietnamese delegation calls on Minister

YANGON, 2 Jan.. - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col  Thein Nyunt received a goodwill delegation led by Chairman of the Council of Nationalities of Vietnam  National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Cu Hoa Van at his office at 1.30 p.m. today. At  the call, they cordially discussed matters related to friendship between the two countries and development  tasks for border areas and national races. Also present were Deputy Minister for PBANRDA Brig-Gen.  Than Tun, Ambassador of Vietnam to Myanmar Mr Pham Quang Khon, Director-General of the Progress  of Border Areas and National Races Department Col Than Swe and officials.

Appointment of Ambassador agreed on

YANGON, 3 Jan.. - The Government of the Union of Myanmar has agreed to the appointment of Mr Andres  Carral Cuevas, as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mexico to the Union of Myanmar.  Mr Andres Carral Cuevas is accredited to the Union of Myanmar, with residence in Singapore.


(5) Minister receives Vietnamese delegation

YANGON, 2 Jan.. - Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen. Sein Htwa received a visiting delegation led by Chairman of the Council of Nationalities of Vietnam National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Cu Hoa Van at the Maykhala hall of the ministry at 3 p.m. today. Also present were Director-General of the Social Welfare Department U Sit Myaing, Director-General of the Fire Services Department U Myint Tun, Director-General of the Relief and Resettlement Department U Than Oo, member of the Work Committee for Myanmar Women Affairs Professor Daw Khin Aye Win and Head of the office U Maung Pi.

Minister inspects mining projects, plants in Shan State (North), PyinOoLwin

YANGON, 2 Jan..-Minister for Mines Brig-Gen. Ohn Myint and party arrived at Namtu Mine in Shan State  (North) on 30 December. Managing Director U Saw Lwin of No 1 Mining Enterprise and General Manager of Namtu Mine U Aung Win reported on mining and smelting of metals. The minister urged officials to strive for exceeding the production target. Then, the minister and party inspected workshops of  the mine.

The minister then inspected construction of Zinc Oxide Plant. On 31 December, the minister and party inspected packaging of loose soil containing zinc at the place 32 miles from Namtu. Member of Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Brig-Gen. Ohn Myint met USDA members at Namtu Township USDA Office. The minister and party proceeded to the basic on-job training school of No 1 Mining Enterprise and gave encouragement to the trainees. Afterwards, the minister and party inspected coal exploitation of AAA Co. in Sanlaung region, Hsipaw Township, and gypsum mining of No 3 Mining Enterprise in Hsipaw. On 1 January, the minister and party inspected No  1  Iron and Steel Plant in PyinOoLwin and gave instructions on production of accessories to substitute imported spare parts, maintain production and increase the production of fuel-wood substitute coal. The minister and party inspected Patheingyi Limestone Work Site, staff welfare agriculture tasks and the fish breeding pond.


(6)  Minister meets I&P, FSD staff

YANGON, 2 Jan.. - Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen. Sein Htwa met with staff  of Immigration and Population Department and Fire Services Department at the Kawthoung Township  Immigration and National Registration Office on 29 December. Then, the minister gave instructions on  duties assigned, disciplines, moral and staff welfare and inspected the I&P Office and Fire Services  Department in Kawthoung District. The minister met with the staff of I&P and FSD at the I&P office in  Bokpyin Township on 30 December. On 31 December, the minister arrived at the Day Nursery in Dawei  Township and gave presents for the children. Then, the minister met with the staff of I&P and FSD at the  Taninthayi Division I&P Office.

Vietnamese delegation visits Shwedagon Pagoda, Drug Elimination Museum

YANGON, 2 Jan..- The visiting goodwill delegation led by Chairman of the Council of Nationalities of Vietnam  National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Cu Hoa Van, accompanied by Director-General Col Than Swe of Progress of Border Areas and National Races Department, paid obeisance to Shwedagon Pagoda this morning. Officials of the pagoda board of trustees welcomed the delegation and conducted them round the pagoda.

The delegation made cash donations to the pagoda. Then, the guests arrived at Women's Development Centre of Social Welfare Department on Thanlwin Road. Director-General U Sit Myaing conducted the guests round the centre. After that, they visited Nationalities Youth Resources Development Degree College (Yangon) of Education and Training Department of the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs. Principal U Sein Htay and officials welcomed them.

They then visited Drug Elimination Museum at the corner of Hanthawady and Kyundaw Streets. At 7 p.m.,  Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt  hosted a dinner in honour of the Vietnamese delegation led by Mr Cu Hoa Van at Ottara Hall of Karaweik  Palace in Kandawgyi. Before the dinner, traditional dances were presented. Then, they exchanged gifts.


(7) Myanmar Forest Products and Timber Merchants Association meets

YANGON, 2 Jan.. - The eighth meeting of Myanmar Forest Products and Timber Merchants Association was  held at the IBC of the Ministry of Forestry on Pyay Road on 29 December, with an address by Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun. Also present were President of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint, Chairman U Aung Lwin of MFPTMA and executives, General Secretary of UMFCCI U Zaw Min Win, CEC members and executives, members of MFPTMA and guests. First, Chairman U Aung Lwin made a speech. Then, Joint General Secretary of MFPTMA U Saw Hlaing submitted the EC reports and financial reports and the reports were approved. Afterwards, Deputy Minister Col Thaik Tun, UMFCCI President U Win Myint and Vice-President U Htein Win accepted K 3.5 million and U$ dollars 743 donated by 26 wellwishers.

57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Marching and Military Song Competition   to be held

YANGON, 2 Jan..- The Subcommittee for Marching and Military Song Competition under the Work Committee for Organizing the Poetry and Arts Competitions chaired by Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe  Nyunt has announced that the marching and military song competitions will be held in
commemoration of  the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day which falls on 27 March 2002. There will be the open level in the  marching song competition and two levels level 1 and level 2in the military song competition. In addition to  the first, second and third prizes, special prizes will be presented to the winners in every competition.

The songs are to be composed highlighting the 12 objectives of the State, the objectives of the 57th
Anniversary Armed Forces Day and the 12 fine traditions of the Tatmadaw. Anyone can take part in the marching song competition, but composers and vocalists included in the level 1 are not allowed to participate in the other two levels. Those who have won the first, second and third prizes in the level 2 of military song competition in the previous years may take part in the level 1 only. Competitors individually or  in groups are allowed to send only one entry. The entry must be Myanmar traditional melody and style and  its duration must be from 4 to 6 minutes.

The entry is to be recorded on a tape. A suitable title for the entry can be given. Ten photo copies of
lyrics of the entry and a copy of musical notes, together with a tape, are to be sent. The entrants are to send their curriculum vitae with three passport size colour photos. The committee will contact tentatively selected competitors. The tentatively selected competitors must take part in the final contest with tapes. The entries are to be sent to Secretary of the Subcommittee, U Ko Ko Htwe, Myanma Radio and Television, Pyay Road, not later than 31 January 2002.

Myanmar Products Expo' 2002 to be held in Lashio

YANGON, 2 Jan..- Dragon Exhibition Ltd will hold the Myanmar Products Expo' 2002 with the
permission of  Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council at City Hall in Lashio from 9 to 13  January. Various  kinds of textile and personal goods, plastics products, paper, stationery and packaging  materials, small-sized  machines and parts, computer sets and spare parts, sports equipment and general  services will be exhibited  in conjunction with the products demonstration. Admission is free.


(8)  Myanma Lacquerware Festival in Bagan on 19-23 January

YANGON, 2 Jan.. - Under the sponsorship of the Cottage Industries Department of the Ministry of
Cooperatives and with the joint cooperation of lacquerware technicians and entrepreneurs, the Myanma Lacquerware Festival will be held at the Myanma Institute of Lacquerware in Bagan from 19 to 23 January.

The purpose of the festival is to publicize Myanma traditional lacquerwares at home and abroad and to promote the standard of Myanma lacquerware. At the festival, a wide range of lacquerwares, Myanma artistic handicrafts and personal goods will be on sale, in conjunction with talks on lacquerware, paper  reading sessions, and lacquerware contests. Interested enterprises and organizations may contact the Myanma Institute of Lacquerware (062-70208, 70231) and the Cottage Industries Department (01- 661353,  661046, 02-39609). The festival will be held from 9 am to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Applied accounting and management course opened

YANGON, 2 Jan..- Organized by the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry  (UMFCCI), the opening of the applied accounting and management courses of level 1 batch (9) and level  II batch (3), which are conducted with the sponsorship of the Myanmar Society of Accountants (MSA),  was held at the UMFCCI Training Centre on Bo Sun Pat Street, Pabedan Township at 1.30 p.m. on 29  December.

It was attended by Patron of UMFCCI Dr Kyaw Htin, Vice-President U Htein Win, General Secretary U Zaw Min Win and CEC members, MSA executives and others. UMFCCI General Secretary U Zaw Min Win, Chairman of Economic and Education Affairs Committee U Sein Win Hlaing and the representative of MSA spoke on the occasion. The level I course is being attended by 53 trainees and the level II course 27 trainees.


(9)  First Leg of Han Golf Masters Junior Golf C'ship held

YANGON, 2 Jan..- The First Leg of the Han Golf Masters Junior (Age-wise) Golf Championship 2002 and the  Golf Tournament in commemoration of 54th Anniversary Independence Day, organized by Myanmar Golf  Federation and mainly sponsored by Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd with the aim of turning out new generation  golfers, were held at Silvery Golf Course of Yangon City Development Committee this morning. Present  were President of MGF Brig-Gen. Win Hlaing, General Secretary U Aung Kyi, executives, guests and  spectators. After the tournaments, on behalf of the president of MGF, General Secretary U Aung Kyi  explained the new generation golf tours to be held in 2002.

Then, Director of Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd professional golfer U Kyi Hla Han presented special prizes to two youngest players Ye Yint Thu, three and a half year of age and Aung Shin Thant, four and a half  year of age and first, second and third prizes to Hnin Marlar with 102 strokes, Sandi Toe Hsaung with 114  and Yadana Moe (Tamway BEHS-2) with 122 in the girls' division respectively. Managing Director of  Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd professional golfer U Chan Han presented first, second and third prizes to Ye  Myat Win with 49 strokes, Nyan Lin with 50 and Myat Tha Oo with 52 in the boys' under-10 age division respectively.

General Secretary of MGF U Aung Kyi presented first, second and third prizes to Nay Bala Win Myint with 82 strokes, Lin Moe Tun with 82 and Kaung Myat Win with 90 in the boys' 11-12 age division respectively. President of MGF Brig-Gen. Win Hlaing presented first, second and third prizes to Yan Naing  Phyo with 80 strokes, Min Thura Aung with 82 and Yan Myo Aye with 84 in the boys' 13-14 age division  respectively and first, second and third prizes to That Zaw Htwe with 77, Naing Naing Lin with 77 and Bo  Lay with 80 in the boys' 15-17 age division respectively. Professional golfer U Kyi Hla Han gave a training  on basic golf techniques to new generation youth golfers who participated in the first leg golf tournament,  for about an hour. The tournaments were co-sponsored by Pan-West (Myanmar), Wilson, Rapier, City  Golf Resort, Star Ice-cream, U Kyi Hla Han & Family.

140,000 stimulant tablets seized in Muse

YANGON, 2 Jan.. - The Muse District Court handed down a sentence of imprisonment on an illicit drug  trafficker on 20 November last year. A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and  Muse Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, stopped and searched the car, Sunny pick-up, with  the number plate 1Kha/2898 bound for Muse from Mutaung Village and seized 140,000 stimulant tablets  weighing 13.3 kilos at 6 p.m. on 11 March 2001. The Muse police station took action against Aung Li (a)  Kyauk Kyin Gan, at the wheels, 32, son of U Kyauk Pi Chin, near the junction of Great Wall Lodging  House Street, Ward 7, Lashio, under Section 15/19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances  Law. The Muse District Court heard the case and sentenced him to 20 years in prison under Section 19  (A).


INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADMISSION

International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University will open in June for 2002 academic year. The first semester for academic year 2002 begins in June and ends in October. The second semester begin on  1st December and ends in March 2003. EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Foreign monks, nuns and laymen who apply for one-year Diploma course must have passed at least the  Matriculation or  equivalent. For the layman who is Myanmar citizen must have their first degree, B.A. or  B.Sc. Myanmar monks and nuns who apply for  Diploma course must not be younger than 18 and not  older than 45. Age limit for students who apply for one-year Diploma course only will be given consideration. The Selection Board reserves the right to decide whether a particular applicant has met the  requirements or not.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

Foreign candidates are required to sit for the written examination at the Embassy of Myanmar in country  of their residence, or at the  examination centre in Yangon, Myanmar. There will be two question papers,  namely, one on English proficiency and the other on general Knowledge relevant to Buddhism. The  closing date for submitting application form for Diploma course is 15th December 2001.  The written  entrance examination for Diploma course will be held on 8th January 2002. A candidate  who passes the  written examination must sit  for personal interview at the Embassy of Myanmar in the country of their  residence before joining the University. The admission policy of the University is  liberal and flexible  enough to get the qualified students for Diploma course. Priority will be givento foreign students.  The  students who joins the University is required to bring a proper medical certificate recently taken from any  recognized authority showing physical and mental fitness.

VISA & OTHER EXPENSES

Once a foreign student is admitted to the Diploma course, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will take care  of visa application and its extension. Tuition, boarding  and messing for foreign students will be provided  free by the University. Travelling expenses for joining the University will not be borne by the University.
