The government has been continuously striving for peace, stability and economic progress of the nation and to promote the economic and social sectors. As long as there is peace and stability and the people join hands with the government, more favourable foundations for national economic development will emerge.

As the favourable foundations are emerging, the government is giving priority to gaining proportionate progress in all the regions of the nation and further improving the economic and social standards of the people. Despite the many favourable conditions there, the road transport was poor in the state; in this regard, Head of State Senior General Than Shwe has given guidance to develop the transport infrastructure of the state within three years to implement the regional development projects. In accord with the guidance, many motor roads including the Yangon-Sittway Highway and bridges including over 10 large bridges have been built to link all the parts of the state. As An Township, Rakhine State's gateway to other parts of the nation, is located on the new highways including the Yangon-Sittway Highway, it will develop together with the rest of the state.

Local authorities, departmental officials and local people should harmoniously strive to gradually develop An in accord with the characteristics of a modern town. At the same time, they should make efforts for progress of agriculture, which is the nation's basic economy, to help develop regional and national economy. At a time when endeavours are being made for all-round progress of the nation, the entire people should practise thrifty methods in using everything including cooking oil, fuel and power. Cultivation and production of oil crops such as sesamum, groundnut and mustard should be extended. Moreover, experimental cultivation of export crops such as cotton, beans and pulses and rubber should  also be promoted.

As Rakhine State is home to various national races, all should live in amity and harmony and to serve
each other's interests to strengthen the spirit of national solidarity and Union Spirit. Local authorities and  departmental personnel should take the leading role in consolidating the national solidarity. The social organizations including the Union Solidarity and Development Association which are actively taking part  in all the regional development, education, health and social endeavours, must be consolidated and  extended. Their force should be effectively used in regional development undertakings. Afterwards,  Secretary-1 cordially greeted those present at the meeting.
