Secretary-1 inspects all-round construction tasks of Mindhamma Hill

Yangon, 5 Dec-  Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt arrived at Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township at 6.30 pm today. The Secretary-1 was welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Nyi Hla Nge and officials, technicians and members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees. First, the Secretary-1 paid obeisance to the Buddha Image. Then, the Secretary-1 inspected construction of the glass-walled hall in which the Buddha Image is kept. Managing Director U Tint Hsan of ACE Construction Co Ltd reported on construction of the hall. Next, officials conducted the Secretary-1 around the all-round construction project of Mindhamma Hill. Then, the Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions and left the Hill in the evening.

Yangon, 5 Dec-  Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Member of the House of Representatives of Japan Mr Kabun Muto, who is currently here, and members at the guest house of the Ministry of Defence at noon today. Present at the call together with Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar Mr Shigeru Tsumoric.

Yangon, 6 Dec- U Win Aung, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Erkki Tuomioja, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Finland, on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Finland which falls on 6 December 2001.

Construction of roads and bridges inspected in Ayeyawady Division

Yangon, 5 Dec- Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and officials of Public Works arrived at the Wakema bridge construction site in Ayeyawady Division yesterday. At the briefing hall, the minister and party heard a report by Deputy Superintending Engineer U Khin Maung Hse of the project on progress in construction of the bridge and future tasks, progress of work for laying the foundation and a tower on Yangon side, plans to be carried out for driving bole piles, work being done for erection of the towers and requirements.

The minister stressed the need to maintain the momentum of work, ensure worksite safety and to give supervision for minimizing loss and wastage, and fulfilled the requirements of heavy machinery. He next inspected progress in construction of the tower on Yangon bank and erection of bole piles. The minister and party, accompanied by the chairman of Wakema Township Peace and Development Council, gave instructions on construction of Wakema road in coming open season. Then, the minister met with local authorities at the office of Kyonmange Township Peace and Development Council and discussed Wakema-Kyonmange road to be an all weather facility and requirements for implementing the bridge project.

Minister inspects palm oil mill, plantations in Kyaikto

Yangon, 5 Dec- Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by departmental officials, arrived at Ingabo oil palm farm in Kyaikto Township, Mon State, yesterday morning. The managing director of Myanma Perennial Crops Enterprise and officials reported on production of oil palm bunches and raw palm oil this season and boosting production of the raw palm oil at the mill. The minister said that while local entrepreneurs grow oil palms with added momentum, the enterprise is to enable the Ingabo oil palm farm and the raw palm oil mill to become models and to carry out production of edible palm oil with the use of locally-made machines. Then, the minister inspected the nursery of Thithseint (belleric myro-balan) saplings, the raw palm oil mill and new oil palm plantations.

After that, the minister proceeded to Ingabo Horticulture Farm and inspected pomelo plantations, water supply with the use of plastic pipes, pepper farms and saplings. The minister gave necessary instructions. Next, he proceeded to the oil palm farm of Myanma Perennial Crops Enterprise in Kyaikto where officials reported to him on annual production of hybrid oil palms and distribution. At the farm, the minister inspected samples of hybrid oil palms. Then, the minister arrived at Mayangon Rubber Farm in Kyaikto.

At the briefing hall, the person in-charge of the farm reported on production of rubber and substitution of new rubber plants in place of the old ones in view of boosting the production. The minister gave necessary instructions  for boosting the production. In the evening, the minister went to the work site of Kataik Dam Project on Kataik Creek near Kataik Village, Paung Township, Thaton District. At the briefing hall, the director of the Irrigation Department reported him on choosing of plot for constructing the dam, land preparation and construction of the conduit. The director-general gave a supplementary report. Afterwards, the minister together with officials inspected soil condition of the embankment, earth work, the design of main embankment, irrigated area, reclamation of cultivable lands in wet land area at the border region of Thaton and Paung townships on completion of the dam and conditions of creeks in the area. Later, the minister inspected construction of the conduit and gave necessary instructions.

Industry-2 Minister inspects factories

Yangon, 5 Dec- Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, accompanied by officials, arrived at No 1 Farming Machinery Factory (Sinde) in Padaung Township, Bago Division (West), on 1 December afternoon, and inspected preparations for production of 10-KVA generators at the Workshop No 1, production of 5-HP Kubota engines and power tillers at No 1 Assembly Plant, construction of extended building at Casting Workshop. He was conducted around the factory by General Manager U Kyaw Kyaw and the minister gave instructions on mass production of generators and engines, systematic storage of old machinery of Casting Workshop. On 2 December afternoon, the minister arrived at No 2 Farming Machinery Factory (Malun) in Minhla Township, Magway Division and inspected the factory.

He was conducted around by Managing Director U Than Tun and Factory General Manager U Thein Aung. The minister gave instructions on meeting the production target, production of high quality goods, cleanliness and fire prevention measures for the factory to the officials. On 3 December afternoon, the minister arrived at No 1 Machine and Machine Tool Plant (Nyaung-chayhtauk) of Myanma Machine Tool and Electrical Industries in Padaung Township, Bago Division (West) and inspected production of 17 mm and 8 mm wire and power cable. Managing Director U Kyaw Win and Factory General Manager U Pe Than Hlaing conducted him round the factory. The minister gave instructions on continuous production of wires and seeking market for the products.

Medical Equipment, cash donated

Yangon, 5 Dec- Dr Alein Suisse, anaesthetist of Caen University Hospital in France called on Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein at his office at 9 am today. Dr Alein Suisse presented medical equipment worth US $ 120,100 for use in Intensive Care Unit and Anaesthesiology Department of Yangon General Hospital. Chairman of Myamar Foundation Mr Juergen von Jordan called on the minister at 10 am. Then, the chairman presented K 20 million for Thandwe People's Hospital and K 14.5 million for MraukU People's Hospital. Also present were Deputy Ministers for Health Prof Dr Mya Oo and Prof Dr Kyaw Myint and officials of the ministry.

Minister for Rail Transportation inspects bridges

Yangon, 5 Dec- Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, together with officials, yesterday morning inspected progress of work on construction of Donthami Bridge and earth work for the approach bridge. The minister fulfilled the needs for timely completion. Then, the minister proceeded to Sittaung Bridge in the afternoon. He inspected repairs to the bridge for durability and left necessary instructions.

Minister inspects functions of Cottage Industries Department

Yangon, 5 Dec- Minister for Cooperatives Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe together with Deputy Director-General Lt-Col Tin Win of Cooperative Department and officials, Managing Director Daw Khin Swe Soe of Cooperative Export & Import Enterprise and advisers arrived at Cottage Industries Department in North Okkalapa Township at 10.30 am today. Director-General U Sein Than and directors of the department reported on functions of the department. Then, the minister gave instructions on improvement of Bagan Lacquerware Institute, Hsaungda Weaving School in Amarapura, weaving high schools and basic weaving schools and implementation for the tasks of the department. Next, the minister and party inspected branches of the department, the laboratory, the blacksmith workshop and the soap cream factory. Aferwards, the minister and party inspected value-added wood industry of the department in Kyanginsu Ward in Mingaladon Township and the mill of Anita Asia Limited.

Contract to construct 100-room resort hotel in Phaya Thonzu signed

Yangon, 5 Dec- A ceremony to sign contract to construct 100-room resort hotel of international standard at Phaya Thonzu in Kayin State by Jaguar Travel and Resort Co Ltd of Thialand with cent per cent investment was held at Kandawgyi Palace Hotel on Kanyeiktha Road this evening. Present were Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and officials of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism and the foreign company. Director-General of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism U Khin Maung Latt and General Manager U Tin Htay and Managing Director of Jaguar Travel and Resort Co Ltd Mr Niphat Saisawang and Director Mr Singthong Thammarongwit signed the contract. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin presented the permit of Myanmar Investment Commission to Managing Director Mr Niphat Saisawang. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin spoke on the occasion. Jaguar Travel and Resort Co Ltd will construct the 100-room resort hotel with the investment of US$ 5.25 million in two years.

( 6 Commander attends prize-presentation ceremony

Yangon, 5 Dec- A ceremony to present prizes to those who brought honour to Rakhine State and to present cash donation was held at the town hall of Sittway on 3 December. It was attended by Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western Command Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, Vice-Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Regional Control Command (Sittway) Commander Brig-Gen Phone Swe, Secretary of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thein Kyaing and departmental officials, commanding officers of regiments and units, social organizations, outstanding athletes and prize winners of the Ninth Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions, coaches and team managers.

The commander explained the purpose of presenting prizes to the winners of the competition. Head of General Administration Department Commissioner U Win Aung reported on efforts to achieve the prizes in the competition and then the commander and officials gave away prizes to outstanding athletes and winners in the competition. On behalf of those who received prizes, Ma Thida Moe, winner of 11 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze, spoke words of thanks. Next, the cash donation ceremony followed. Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe presented K 500,000 to the Sittway Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association, K 1,000,000 to the Supervisory Committee for Rakhine State Maternal and Child Welfare Association, K 1,000,000 to the state Auxiliary Fire Brigade and K 500,000 to Red Cross. Afterwards, prize winners of the Ninth Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions presented entertainment.

Commander inspects dam, harvesting of monsoon paddy, bridge, school

Yangon, 5 Dec- Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win and officials, arrived at Sedawgyi Dam in Madaya Township on 3 December morning and heard the reports on inflow of water, water storage and water supply of the dam by Director of Mandalay Division Irrigation Department U Tin Aung and officials. After inspecting the dam and giving instructions to the officials, the commander heard reports on power supply at the hall of the Sedawgyi Power Station by Station Manager U Tun Chit and officials.

The commander then inspected the station and fulfilled the requirements. The dam can store 363,620- acre feet of water it generates and it generates 580 megawatts beginning June. It supplies water to 100,148 acres of lands. At 11 am, the commander arrived at Sintingon Village in the township and inspected the plantations of Peasant U Paw Kyi where Pedisein, corn and Pesingon are thriving. He also inspected harvesting and winnowing of paddy strains at the plantations of Peasant U Win Oo in Lettaunggyi Village.

Altogether 5,240 acres of Pedisein, 6,500 acres of Pesingon have been cultivated and 9,960 acres of monsoon paddy have been harvested. Per acre yield of paddy is 72.75 baskets. Afterwards, the commander proceeded to Tanga bridge construction project near mile post 26/2 on Mandalay-Madaya-Mogok road and inspected construction of approach road, pier Nos 1, 2, 4 and 5 and gave instructions to the officials. The new bridge is of reinforced concrete type. It is 360 feet long and its motorway is 28 feet wide. The commander then arrived at Kanbyu No 2 BEPS in the township. He heard reports on collection of teaching and learning aids for audio lab by Headmaster U Maung Maung Than at the hall of the school. He inspected teaching and learning, school health care tasks and greening tasks of the school and attended to the needs.

( 7 ) Myanmar, Japanese teams jointly conduct surgical operations

Yangon, 5 Dec- Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein inspected Sanpya Hospital in Thingangyun Township this morning. Accompanied by Deputy Minister for Health Prof Dr Kyaw Myint and Director-General of Health Department Dr Wan Maung, the minister visited a course on maintenance of endoscopy conducted by engineer Mr Tanaka of Olympic Company at the hospital. The minister and party then inspected surgical operation on patients with cleft lip and cleft palate jointly conducted by Myanmar and Japanese medical teams. Leader of the Myanmar surgenos team Dr Ko Ko Maung and leader of the Japanese surgenos team Professor Tashiro explained salient points of the project. Afterwards, the minister and party inspected final-year medical students studying practical lessons on surgery and health care services at the intensive care unit. They then comforted the patients. They also visited the obstetric and gynaetology ward. Medical Superintendent Dr M Ja Naw and officials conducted the minister and party around the ward.

Myanmar-Korea Economic Coordination meeting held

Yangon, 5 Dec- Myanmar-Korea Economic Coordination meeting of five member companies of Chung-Nam Trade delegation, Korea and 23 economic companies organizations of Myanmar was held at the Sofitel Plaza at 9 am today. Present were Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Mr Chung Jung-gum and Attache (Commercial) Mr Kim Jae Chan, officials of economic organizations in Myanmar and seven officials of five member companies of Chung-Nam Trade delegation, Korea. They discussed matters related to sales on glasses of Daejin Optical Co Ltd, batteries and electronic parts of Hyun Shin Terminal Co, medicines and medical equipment of Korea United Pharm Inc, electric chokes of IGL Tech Corp, table lamps of SILOAM Lighting. The meeting will continue tomorrow.

( 8 ) Ygn-Mgy-Mdy flight launched

Yangon, 5 Dec- Myanmar Airways has launched Yangon-Magway-Mandalay flight every Sunday and Wednesday and Mandalay-Magway-Yangon flight on Mondays and Thursdays by Fokker F-27, beginning today. Enquiry can be made at Myanmar Airways (Head Office), No 104, Strand Road.

Myitkyina Majoi Manau Festival and Myitkyina Majoi Consumer Expo to be held

Yangon, 5 Dec- Myitkyina Majoi Manau Festival and Myitkyina Majoi Consumer Expo/2001 jointly organized by Manau Festival Organizing Committee and New Grace Int'l Exhibition Services Co Ltd with the supervision of Kachin State Peace and Development Council will be held at Citapu Manau ground in Myitkyina from 27 December 2001 to 2 January 2002. Big companies such as Mikko, Gold Roast, Scorpion C-plus, Accel Int'l Co Ltd, Mega Co Ltd, VeVe soft drinks Co, Rococo Garment, Revlon Cosmetics, UPG, Ever Seiko and PMG, local entrepreneurs and cooperative societies will participate in the expo. Construction equipment, electrical goods, clothing, fashion designs, cosmetics, medicines, plastics, foodstuff, furniture, arts and crafts, electronic equipment and stationery will be put on display at the expo. Admission is free and the expo includes sale promotion programmes.

December mass sports activities held

Yangon, 5 Dec- With a view to uplifting health and fitness of entire nation, the year 2001 December mass sports activities are being held in various regions on Saturdays. The staff and their families of the Sports and Physical Education Department, trainees of the Sports and Physical Education Institute, those from Tamway, Bahan and Yankin Township Peace and Development Councils and social organizations, students and townselders totalling over 5,000 collectively took a walk along the ring road of Kyaikkasan Grounds.

Then, they took physical exercises at the sports grounds of SPEI. Members of aerobic teams from ten basic education schools in Tamway Township presented a skill demonstration. Afterwards, sports games were held. Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint formally opened track and field events, President of Myanmar Hockey Federation Commandant of Defence Services Records Office Brig-Gen Myo Myint hockey goal-shooting competition and Chairman of Myanmar Football Federation Director-General of the Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik football goal-shooting competition. After the competitions, officials presented prizes to the winners. The Milo (Nestle) Co added the prizes and served the athletes with Milo nutritious powder. Tamway Township also added the prizes and served refreshments.

( 9 ) 200 drug-related cases exposed in October

Yangon, 5 Dec- The Tatmadaw, the Myanmar Police Force and the Customs Department exposed 200 drug-related cases in October 2001. Among the seizures were 7.0866 kilos of opium in 14 cases, 0.7218 kilo of heroin in 68 cases, 1.1925 kilos of opium oil in three cases, 8.2816 kilos of low-grade opium in 11 cases, 25.0821 kilos of marijuana in 21 cases, 51.95 litres of phensedyl in three cases, 9,592,412 stimulant tablets in 53 cases, 111.3 kilos of Ephedrine in two cases, 0.005 kilo of stimulant powder in one case, 7.5 litres of cough syrup in one case, six kilos of caffeine in one case, 472.784 litres of Acetic Anhydride, 4734.684 litres of chemical liquid in one case, 66.5 kilos of chemical powder, 86 other tablets, 17 cases for failure to register and four other cases. Action was taken against 321 persons 250 men and 71 women in connection with 200 drug-related cases in October 2001.

Drug traffickers sentenced

Yangon, 5 Dec- A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Bago Special Anti-drug Squad, acting on information, searched Ma Mya Oo, Ma Shwe Kyi and Ma Tin Ngwe, who were on board the bus with the number plate 4-Kha/5480 en route from Toungoo at Polan Check Point in Bago at 1 pm on 18 November 2000. The authorities seized 8.25 kilos of marijuana kept in their leather bag and basket. The police station concerned filed Ma Mya Oo, 32, daughter of U Tun Ngwe of Theingone Village in Htantabin Township, Ma Shwe Kyi, 36, daughter of U Aung Gyi and Ma Tin Ngwe, 38, daughter of U Maung Sein under section 15/19 (A)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Bago District Court on 23 November 2001 handed down 13 years' imprisonment each on them under section 19 (A) of the Law.
