Yangon, 13 Nov-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received President Mr Sasakawa Yohei of Nippon Foundation Sasakawa Peace Foundation of Japan and members at the guest house of the Ministry of Defence this evening. Present on the occasion together with the Secretary-1 were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

Secretary-1 receives Chairman of C.P Group of Thailand

Yangon, 13 Nov-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Chairman Mr Dhanin Chearavanont of C.P Group of Thailand and members at the guest house of the Ministry of Defence this evening. Present on the occasion together with the Secretary-1 were Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Deputy Chief of Defence Services Intelligence Bureau Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Ambassador of Thailand Mr Oum Maolanon.

  Minister receives Japanese guests

Yangon, 13 Nov-Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt received President Mr Sasakawa Yohei of Nippon Foundation of Japan at his office this afternoon. Construction of 100 primary schools in border areas and rural areas were discussed. Present were Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt, the directors-general of the ministry and officials. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun and President Mr Sasakawa Yohei of Nippon Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on construction of 100 primary schools. They then exchanged the documents.

Industry-2 Minister receives Japanese guests

 Yangon, 13 Nov- Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin received General Manager of Kinsho Corporation (Yangon Branch), Japan, Mr Takenori Kosaka at his office at 2 pm today. They cordially discussed areas of bilateral economic and industrial cooperation. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister for Industry-2 Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw and officials.

Health Minister receives Japanese guests

Yangon, 13 Nov- Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein received President of Nippon Foundation, Japan, Mr Sasakawa Yohei and party at his office at 10 am today. Also present at the call were Deputy Ministers for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo and Professor Dr Kyaw Myint and officials.

 Yangon, 14 Nov- U Tin Oo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Lao People's Democratic Republic, presented his credentials to His Excellency Mr Khamtay Siphandone, President of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, on 6 November 2001, in Vientiane.

Ambassador U Sein Win Aung presents credentials to President of PRC

Yangon, 14 Nov - U Sein Win Aung, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the People's Republic of China, presented his credentials to His Excellency Mr Jiang Zemin, President of the People's Republic of China, on 8 November 2001, in Beijing.

  Minister for Religious Affairs leaves for Nepal

Yangon, 13 Nov-Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin left here this evening to attend the opening ceremony of a Dhammayon on the plot of land in Lumbini Park in Nepal. The delegation was accompanied by Joint Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kundalajoti and members. The minister and the Sayadaw were seen off at the airport by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Adviser to the State Peace and Development Council U Arnt Maung, Charge d' Affaires ai of the Nepal Embassy Mr Harishchandra Ghimire and officials. Members of the delegation are Director-General of the Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Sann Lwin, Staff Officer U San Thin Hlaing of Religious Affairs Department and U Tin Wai Lwin of the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Myanma Insurance holds biannual coord meeting

Yangon, 13 Nov Ñ The biannual coordination meeting of the Myanma Insurance for the fiscal year 2001-2002 was held at the hall of the Myanma Insurance (Head Office) on Merchant Street here this afternoon, with an address by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein. Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Governor U Kyaw Kyaw Maung of the Central Bank of Myanmar, Managing Director Col Thein Lwin of the Myanma Insurance and departmental heads and insurance agents from Myanma Insurance offices in states and divisions. Minister U Khin Maung Thein delivered an opening speech. He said that the Myanma Insurance is a state-owned service, and it is serving the interests of the State and the public. The essence of the service is to pay compensation to the insured for their loss, failure and damage, and all are to make suggestions on the processes of the service and to strive for the improvement of services, he said. Then, the attendance made discussions.

Marine technology to be upgraded

Yangon, 13 Nov - A coordination meeting on upgrading marine technology at the Institute of Marine Technology of the Ministry of Transport was held at the Institute on Bayintnaung Road this morning, with an address by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe. Also present were Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Nyi Hla Nge, Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt, Deputy Ministers for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, Commander of Naval Dockyard Command Headquarters Commodore Paw Tun, the principal of the Institute, directors of departments concerned and invited scholars. The deputy ministers, departmental heads and scholars reported on drawing upgraded curricula, appointment of the more teachers, and increasing of number of students. The meeting came to a close with concluding remarks by the minister.

Energy Minister inspects agricultural tasks in Nyaunghnapinkwin

Yangon, 13 Nov-Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi inspected the vegetable patches of the ministry at Nyaunghnapinkwin Agricultural Zone in Hmawby Township yesterday. Officials of the ministry reported on marketing the vegetables from the patches to tax-free markets in Yangon. Sales of the produce in October were over K 400,000, they added. The minister said that in accord with the guidance of the Head of State, vegetables are to be cultivated and distributed at reasonable prices for the convenience of Yangonites and in the experimental stage, advice and help should be sought from experts to grow horseradish which bears fruits the whole year round.

Yangon Command wins Defence Services C-in-C's track & field c'ship shield

Yangon, 13 Nov - The opening ceremony of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief's shield Track and Field Tournament 2001 was held at Aung San Stadium here this morning. Chairman of the Defence Services Sports and Physical Education Administration Committee Adjutant-General Maj-Gen Thein Sein, on behalf of the Defence Services Commander-in-Chief, made an opening address on the occasion. It was also attended by the chief of staff (Navy), the chief of staff (Air), the vice adjutant-general, the deputy commander of Yangon Command, senior military officers, the director-general of the Sports and Physical Education Department, Tatmadawmen, families and fans. Altogether 24 teams took part in the tournament. The final matches were held and the senior military officers and officials presented prizes to the winners. Then, the ceremony to present the Defence Services Commander-in-Chief's Track and Field Championship shield was held. The Yangon Command team won the championship shield in men's events, the South-West Command team, in women's events. On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo presented championship shields to the winning teams, and the ceremony came to a close.

Auditor-General meets officials

Yangon, 13 Nov - Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye met with township level officials and service personnel of the Accounts Office at Hlegu Township Peace and Development Council Office this morning. The auditor-general discussed auditing work, production, management, staff affairs and staff welfare. He also looked into the requirements presented by the officials. Brig-Gen Tin Aye was accompanied by Director of the Auditor-General's Office U Khin Maung Lin.

( 6 )   Talks on Asian Ethno-Forms-Lacquerwares continues

 Yangon, 13 Nov - The talks on Asian Ethno-Forms-Lacquerwares organized by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Cooperatives, Japan Foundation and Japanese Embassy to the Union of Myanmar continued at the multi-purpose hall of the National Museum this morning. Present were directors-general and managing directors of the departments and enterprises under the Ministries, deputy directors-general, officials, member of Myanma History Commission Dr Khin Maung Nyunt, Japanese Lacquerwares Scholar Professor Dr Kaneko Kazushige, diplomats, lacquerware scholars from Bagan and enthusiasts. Dr Kaneko Kazushige and Dr Khin Maung Nyunt gave talks on lacquerwares. Then, those present viewed the lacquerwares round the exhibition hall.

Measures for organizing Armed Forces Day Literary and photo competitions co-ordinated

Yangon, 13 Nov -The first co-ordination meeting of the 57th Anniversary (2002) Armed Forces Day Literary and Photo Competitions Organizing Work Committee was held at the meeting hall of Myanma Radio and Television on Pyay Road at 1 pm today. It was attended by Work Committee Chairman Deputy Minister for Information U Thein Sein and members MRTV Director-General U Khin Maung Htay, News and Periodicals Enterprise Managing Director U Tin Kha, Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise Managing Director U Bo Kyi, Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung), Adviser of the Ministry of Information U Kyaw Sunn, and officials concerned. Work Committee Chairman U Thein Sein delivered an address. He invited all to take part in the discussions and make suggestions for successfully holding the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day commemorative short story, novel, article, colour photo and extempore talks competitions reflecting the glory and prestige of the Tatmadaw. Next, Work Committee Secretary MRTV Director (Broadcasting) U Ko Ko Htwe explained matters on the work programme for holding the competitions. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by Deputy Minister U Thein Sein.

( 7Dipavali Day and New Year Celebration held

Yangon, 13 Nov- A reception to mark the Dipavali Day for Year 2001 and the new year celebration sponsored by Myanmar India Business Club was held at the Traders Hotel yesterday evening. Present were Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Ambassador of India to Myanmar Mr Vivek Katju and wife, departmental heads, President of MIBC and merchants, families and invited guests. President Mr Om Prakash of Myanmar India Business Club extended greetings. Then, Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint and Ambassador Mr Vivek Katju extended greetings marking the Dipavali Day and new year. Afterwards, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko and Ambassador Mr Vivek Katju lighted the oil lamps marking the Dipavali Day and opened the ceremony. Later, ladies of family members of MIBC entertained with the dances.

Myanmar canoe team wins seven gold, two silver, one bronze

Yangon, 13 Nov - The Third ASEAN Canoe Race is being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Myanmar canoe team led by U Tun Oo is taking part in the race and has bagged seven gold, two silver and one bronze up to 12 November. The race started on 11 November and will continue till 14 November.

Sepak Takraw Tournament opens

Yangon, 13 Nov -The Third Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman's Trophy Sepak Takraw Tournament was opened at the gymnasium of the Sepak Takraw Federation here at 1 pm today. Present on the occasion were Myanmar Olympic Committee Vice-Chairman Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Secretary of the Committee Director-General of the Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik and officials, Myanmar Sepak Takraw Federation President Deputy Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Brig-Gen Zaw Win and Executive Committee members and fans. Myanmar Olympic Committee Vice-Chairman Brig-Gen Maung Nyo delivered an address and declared the tournament open. The teams of various ministries and clubs are taking part in the tournament which will be held till 22 November 2001.

( 8 )  8.387 kilos of marijuana seized

Yangon, 13 Nov - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, while waiting at Anauk Myopat Street in Ward 3/Kha, Mingaladon Township and searched a suspect, Ma Khine (a) Ma Myint Kyi of No 2 Street, Ward 5 in DaikU, and found six packets of marijuana weighting 8.387 kilos in her plastic basket on 11 November. The police station filed her in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
