Yangon, 9 Nov-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Managing Director of Fritz Werner Industries Mr W Schoeltzke and party of Germany at the guest house of the Ministry of Defence at 10.30 am today. Also present at the call together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

 Secretary-1 views prize-winning works of photo contest

 Yangon, 9 Nov - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt viewed the prize-winning works of the black and white, colour and digital photo contest organized by the News and Periodicals Enterprise of the Ministry of Information at the meeting hall on the first floor of the City Hall here this morning. The Secretary-1, together with officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the City Hall at 9 am. He was welcomed there by ministers, the Yangon Mayor, deputy ministers, departmental heads, members of the panel of judges of the photo contest and officials. The Secretary-1 viewed the prize-winning works of professional level colour photo contest, amateur level colour photo contest, amateur level digital colour photo contest, professional level black and white photo contest and amateur level black and white photo contest, and then cordially greeted the prize-winners. After giving necessary instructions to the officials concerned, the Secretary-1 left the City Hall.

Industry-1 Minister meets guests

Yangon, 9 Nov - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met with Chairman U Nay Win Tun of Dragon Cement Co Ltd of Pa-O national race group, Shan State (South) Special Region 6, and technician Mr Hong Qi of Guangzhou Hontin Cement Technology Co Ltd of the People's Republic of China and party at his office this afternoon. Also present were Director-General U San Kyi of Regional Industrial Coordination and Inspection Department. Managing Director Col Soe Yi of Myanma Ceramic Industries, General Manager U Myit Thaung and Head of Office U Myint Swe.

Minister Col Thein Nyunt receives Japanese guest

 Yangon, 9 Nov - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt received Chairman of Karamosia International, Japan, Mr Kenichi Kato at his office at 1 pm today. They cordially discussed matters related to implemention of the second phase of the project for all-round development of Shan State (South) and the project for the all-round development of Wa region (South). Also present at the call were directors-general of the departments under the ministry and officials. Then, Director-General of Progress of Border Areas and National Races Department Col Than Swe and Chairman of Karamosia International Mr Kenichi Kato exchanged the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

( 3 ) Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung leaves for UNGA Session

Yangon, 9 Nov -The Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung left here by air this afternoon to attend the 56th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York which begins on 12 September. The Minister was seen off at the Yangon International Airport by Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, departmental heads and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Minster was accompanied by U Min Thein, Officer on Special Duty of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The delegation to the 56th Session of the United Nations General Assembly also comprises Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, U Tin Winn as Alternate Chairman, Permanent Representative of the Union of Myanmar to the United Nations in New York U Kyaw Tint Swe as Vice-Chairman, Ambassador Dr Kyaw Win of Myanmar Embassy in London, U Win Mra, Director-General of the International Organizations and Economic Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lt-Col Hla Min and Lt-Col Sithu of the Ministry of Defence and U Zeyar Oo, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Union of Myanmar to the United Nations in New York as members. Minister inspects factories in Yangon

 Yangon, 9 Nov- Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thein Tun and officials, arrived at the Myanma Pharmaceutical Factory of Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries on Pharmaceutical Factory Street in West Gyogon, Insein Township, this morning. The minister inspected the products of the factory. Then, factory manager U Zaw Win reported on cultivation of herbal plants in Heho, Thandaung, Pwintbyu, Ngazudaung and Hmawby Townships, and Managing Director of MPI U Myint Oo on the breeding of quality strain horses and plans to replace old machines with new ones. The minister gave instructions on production of potent medicines by using local raw materials instead of foreign raw materials, and extended cultivation of herbal plants. The minister and party proceeded to Myanma Umbrella Factory of Myanma General and Maintenance Industries at No 111 on Yangon-Insein Road in Hline Township.

The minister inspected production of men's and women' umbrellas and gave instructions. The minister cordially met with dutiful staff who have 30 years' service and above at the factory, and presented honorary awards to them. He later inspected the pepper plants grown in the factory compound, and discussed extension of cultivation of pepper plants. He headed for the rubber factory of MGMI on Shwe Hin Tha Street, 6 1/2th Mile, the same township. MGMI Managing Director U Thaik Tun and officials reported on installation of new machines with the use of charts. The minister gave instructions on timely completion. The minister inspected production of bicycle tyres, repairs of the building, and production process of automobile tyres, and left necessary instructions.

MEB state/division managers meet

Yangon, 9 Nov - The 2001-2002 biannual work coordination meeting of state/division managers of Myanma Economic Bank under the Ministry of Finance and Revenue was held at Myanma Economic Bank Branch-1 on Pansodan Street at 9 am today. Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein gave an opening speech at the meeting. Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun, Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, Managing Director of MEB U Aung Myint, departmental heads, state/division managers and invited guests. The minister called on all to implement the aims of MEB in accord with the policies of the State, to contribute to the meeting as regards the present condition of MEB and future tasks and to modernize the banking system. The state/division managers presented their reports. The managing director and general managers attended to the requirements of state/division managers.

Minister for Construction inspects bridges

 Yangon, 9 Nov - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, together with Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint Thein and officials of Public Works, inspected the toll gate of Aungzeya Bridge this afternoon. The minister gave instructions. Then, the minister and party proceeded to the constrction site of Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge No 2. Superintending Engineer U Myint Lwin reported on progress of work. The minister gave instructions on timely completion of construction work and worksite safety. Then, the minister inspected the constrution work and attended to the requirements.

Shwe Asia General Merchandise Cooperative Society Ltd meets

Yangon, 9 Nov-The annual general meeting for fiscal 2000-2001 of Shwe Asia Merchandise Cooperatives Society Ltd tookplace on the first floor of Cooperative Central Department (Saya San Plaza) at the corner of Saya San and Tekkotha Yeiktha Lanthit Roads, Bahan Township, this morning. It was attended by Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, directors-general and managing director of departments and the enterprises under the ministry, chairmen of the cooperative banks, chairmen of cooperative cartels, chairman and members of the Board of Directors of Shwe Asia Cooperatives. Chairman of the meeting Dr Khin Shwe made an opening speech.

Then Minister U Aung San urged all the staff of the cooperative society to strive for achieving more success, to promote export in cooperation with departments, enterprises, and cooperative banks under the ministry and to work in unity so that the association would become a model one. Afterwards, the officials sought the approval of the meeting for the report of the Board of Directors and financial statement. After the meeting, the minister and officials inspected the applied computer technology and foreign language (English) courses of Yangon Cooperative Degree College on the third floor of Saya San Plaza.

( 6Myanmar-Thai CECA and Thai-Myanmar CECA meet

Yangon, Nov 9- Myanmar-Thai Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association and Thai-Myanmar Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association held discussions at Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road here this afternoon. It was attended by Chairman of Myanmar-Thai Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association Lt-Gen Kyaw Than (Retd) and executives, General Secretary of Thai-Myanmar Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association Gen Sanan Kajornklam and officials. After the discussion, Gen Sanan Kajornklam presented US $ 4,000 donated by member of Thai-Myanmar Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association Ms Luxana Jariyawatskul to Myanmar-Thai Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association to Lt-Gen Kyaw Than (Retd).

Subcommittee for Organizing Flag-hoisting and Saluting Ceremony meets

Yangon, 9 Nov - The Subcommittee for Organizing the 54th Anniversary Independence Day Yangon City Flag-hoisting and Saluting Ceremony held its first meeting in the meeting hall of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council this morning. Chairman of the Subcommittee member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than made a speech. Secretary of the Subcommittee Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint explained the work programmes to hold the ceremony. Then, a general round of discussions followed. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the commander. Also present were members of the Subcommittee, chairmen and members of work groups, heads of department, officials of non-governmental organizations and guests.

Myanmar Wushu team accorded rousing welcome

Yangon, 9 Nov - The Myanmar Wushu team, which bagged gold, silver and bronze medals in the Sixth World Wushu Championship held in Yerevan, Armenia, from 1 to 5 November, led by President of Myanmar Wushu Federation U Khin Maung Lay, arrived back here by air this morning. They were accorded rousing welcome at Yangon International Airport by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, leading patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation, Director-General of the Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik and officials, officials of MWF and sports federations, athletes, students, their family members and Myanmar traditional dance troupe. A total of three Myanmar competitors took part in the eight events in the Championship, in which 43 nations participated. Myanmar competitor Maung Pyi Wai Phyo won one gold and two bronzes; Ma Swe Swe Thant, two gold medals and one certificate of honour (World's position 4); Ma Khaing Khaing Maw, one silver medial and one certificate of honour (World's position 4) totalling eight different medals in eight events.

( 7 ) Launching of National Immunization Days discussed

 Yangon, 9 Nov - The Central Leading Committee to Launch the Seventh National Immunization Days held a meeting at Medical Research Department (Lower Myan-mar) in Dagon Township here this afternoon, with an address by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein. Also present were Deputy Ministers for Health Prof Dr Mya Oo and Prof Dr Kyaw Myint, Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Prof Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, directors-general of departments under the Ministry of Health, department heads of the related ministries, members of social organizations, members of the leading committee, division level health officers and officials. The minister said the meeting was held to assess the implementation of the committee's tasks laid down at the first meeting. Taking the lessons from the experiences gained during the period of six years, all should strive from their respective sectors for the success of the tasks. Secretary of the leading committee Director-General of Health Department Dr Wan Maung reported to the meeting on the accomplishment of the tasks. The officials then took part in the discussions. The leading committee members gave suggestions. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister.

Gifts for No 2 Military Hospital (500-bed), military hospitals in remote areas

 Yangon, 9 Nov-A ceremony to donate medicines and medical equipment to No 2 Military Hospital (500-bed) and military hospitals in remote areas was held at No 2 Military Hospital (500-bed)) at 4.30 pm today. Present on the occasion were Director of Medical Services of the Ministry of Defence Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, Brig-Gen Saw Hla Min of Phugyi Station, Commandant of No 2 Military Hospital (500-bed) Col Min Naing, Specialists Col Ye Thway and Col Tun Myint, officials and well-wishers. Brig-Gen Saw Hla Min and Dr Ko Ko Gyi of Diamond Star Co Ltd explained the purpose of the donation while Specialist Col Ye Thway explained about the sharing of cash donated by well-wishers. Brig-Gen Saw Hla Min of Phugyi Station and well-wishers presented medicines and medical equipment worth K 9.03 million for No 2 Military Hospital (500-bed) and well-wishers presented medicines and medical equipment valued at K 2 million for military hospitals in remote areas. Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han accepted the donations and spoke words of thanks. Yangon, 9 Nov-Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and party donated clothes and cash to 220 aged persons of Hninzigon Home for the Aged in Bahan Township this afternoon. Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe donated K 106,750 for 220 sets of dress for the aged, Lt-Gen Kyaw Than (Retd), wife Daw Khin Swe Nyunt, daughter Ma Khin Sandar, son Maung Nay Lin and daughter Ma Thazin Soe family K 10,000, Dr Pe Thein, Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and family K 10,000, Col Ba Hein (Retd), Daw Htay Htay and family K 10,000, U Maung Maung (7), Daw Khin Myint Myint and family K 10,000, U Aye Mu, Daw Thin Thin and family K 10,000 and U Maung Tin, Daw Khin Aye Kyi and family K 25,000 to Chairman of the Supervisory Committee for Hninzigon Home for the Aged U Maung Tin and Vice-Chairman Lt-Col Kyaw Shein (Retd).

( 8 ) Drug traffickers jailed

Yangon, 9 Nov - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Monywa Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched the guest house at Sulegon Ward in Monywa on 23 September morning 2000 and seized 209 100-mm bottles of Phensedyl totalling 20.9 litres concealed in two iron buckets, a flask and baskets from Ma Yi Yi Thein, Ma Khin Htay and Ma Khin Aye Myint. In connection with the case, Monywa Police Station No 1 filed Ma Yi Yi Thein, 41, daughter of U Cho of Aungmingalar Ward, Kalay, Ma Khin Htay, 34, and Ma Khin Aye Myint, 42, daughters of U Hla Thaung of Aungthitsar Ward, the same town under Section 15/19(A)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Monywa District Court handed down 12 yearsŐ imprisonment on each of them under Section 19 (A) on 25 October.

55,000 stimulant pills seized in Hsenwi

 Yangon, 9 Nov - Members of local Intelligence unit and special anti-drug squad seized Sai Min Thu together with 55,000 stimulant pills at Yepu check point in Hsenwi Township on 27 October. Mao Sihaik, son of U Mao Khaik Wai, of Loilan, was at the wheel when the car, which was on its way from Laukkai to Lashio, was stopped and searched at the check point. The authorities found the drugs in possession of Sai Min Thu, son of U Po Lein, of Ward 1, Namhsan. No 1 Lashio Police Station took action against the two.
