Yangon, 12 Oct- Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar has sent a message of congratulations to Her Excellency, Begum Khaleda Zia, Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, on her assumption of the Office of the Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

A&I Minister receives Laotian Ambassador

Yangon, 11 Oct- Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin received Ambassador of the Lao People's Democratic Republic to Myanmar Mr Ly Bounkham at his office on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 2.30 pm today. They cordially discussed matters related to technological cooperation in the agriculture sector between the two countries, opening of two small-scale dams under construction with the technical aids of Myanmar and setting up of model agricultural farms. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, heads of department and officials concerned.

Talks on Knowledge-based Society held

Yangon, 11 Oct- Talks on Building a Knowledge-based Society in the 21st Century was held at the Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road at 2 pm today. It was attended by Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Minister U Myo Nyunt, the directors-general, deputy directors-general, and chairmen of departments and commissions under the ministry, rectors, pro-rectors, professors, principals, associate professors from the universities and colleges of Yangon, IT experts, staff and PGDMA trainees. Chairman of World Wide Web Institute Ltd of Geneva, Switzerland, Mr Bruce Elliott gave a talk on Building a Knowledge-based Society in the 21st Century. The rectors and professors also took part in the discussions, and the talk came to a close.

ISD Shooting Tourney commences

Yangon, 11 Oct- A ceremony to open the 4th Inter-State/Division Shooting Tournament, sponsored by the Sports and Physical Education Department and organized by Myanmar Shooting Federation, was held at the shooting range of South Okkalapa Township at 8 am today, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint. It was also attended by Vice-Chairman of MOC Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Patron of MSF Director of Ordnance Services of the Ministry of Defence Brig-Gen Hla Tun, Director-General of SPED U Thaung Thaik and officials, Chairman of the Federation Col Win Than and officials and guests. The defending champion Yangon Division team, then presented the championship shield to the minister, who then declared the tourney open. Nine teams from states and divisions are taking part in the tournament to be held up to 17 October.

( 3 ) Prizes presented to winners of Ninth Yangon Division Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions

Yangon, 11 Oct- A ceremony to present the flag representing Yangon Division to the Division team which will take part in the Ninth Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions was held at Saya San Hall at Kyaikkasan Grounds in Tarmway Township this evening. Prizes were also presented to winners in the competitions at the cere-mony. Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and wife Daw Malar Tint attended the ceremony.

Also present were Vice-Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint and wife, commanders of military regions and their wives, Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint and members, chairmen of District Peace and Development Councils, members of the panel of judges, contestants of the performing arts competitions and guests. The ceremony was opened by singing a song by the contestants who had taken part in the song composing contests.

Then, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than presented the flag representing Yangon Division to Manager of Yangon Division Team Maj Lu Aye. Afterwards, the commander made a speech. Next, the commander and wife and officials presented prizes to the winners of the Ninth Yangon Division Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions. Ma Wint Thinza Satin and Myanmar orchestra (basic education level 10-15 age group) and Ma Kezin Chit Su and Myanmar orchestra troupe (basic education level 5-10 age group) entertained the audience; nine harpists and five violinists (basic education level 10-15 age group) also entertained the audience; Maung Noe Noe Lapyi and Ma Eindray Kyaw (basic education level 5-10 age group) performed dances; Star Bo Htet and pot-drum troupe also entertained the audience. The commander presented awards to those who entertained the audience. Maung Moe Win, son of artiste U Sein Mar Din and Daw Amar Yee, presented K 50,000 for Yangon Division Team to the commander. The commander presented a certificate of honour to the donor. Later, the commander and wife had a cordial meeting with the contestants.

Cash donation ceremony for Kyaungtawgyi Pagoda held

Yangon, 11 Oct- A ceremony to present cash donations for renovation of the eastern archway of Ghanda-kuti Hall of the Maha Thakya-marazein Kyaungtawgyi Buddha Image was held on the pagoda precinct on 9 October morning. It was attended by Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Central Command Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win and senior military officers, Division Peace and Development Council Secretary Lt-Col Tin Ohn, department officials, Maha Thakya-marazein Kyaungtawgyi Pagoda All-round Renovation Committee Chairman Col Soe Lwin, members of the pagoda board of trustees, Myanmar traditional architects, well-wishers and others.

First, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint paid homage to the Kyaungtawgyi Buddha Image and inspected renovation works. Wellwishers U Chit and Daw Bwint and daughter Daw Tin Thein, Daw Khin Shwe, Daw Khin Aye Hla and Daw Mya Mya Khaing (Man San jewellery shop) between 26th and 66th Streets, Mandalay, handed over cash donations amounting to K 1.02 million to Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint. The Commander presented a certificate of honour to the well-wishers. Afterwards, the Commander and party paid homage to the pagoda and inspected the renovation works. The Commander also gave necessary instructions.

Commander visits Maha Leti Stone Inscriptions in Monywa

Yangon, 11 Oct- Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, accompanied by departmental officials, visited Maha Leti Stone Inscriptions in Monywa on 7 October. The commander observed the work of copying over 120 Leti Dipani treatises and stone inscriptions of Leti Sayadaw, on computer and storing them on CD-ROMs. This project is being carried out under the arrangement of ninth Leti Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kelasa, aiming at distributing these CD-ROMs to the public.

Then, the commander presented two sets of computer to the Sayadaw. The commander and wife and officials presented alms and offered "soon" to 295 members of the Sangha. In the afternoon, the commander inspected Htanzaloak Dam in the same town. Officials concerned reported on water storage of the dam and supply of water to surrounding villages. The commander fulfilled the requirements. Later, the commander inspected plantations of long staple cotton and pigeon pea grown with the use of water from the dam.

Training of Service Providers for Trafficking in Women and Children opened

Yangon, 11 Oct- The Training of Service Providers for Trafficking in Women and Childern jointly organized by Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs (MNCWA) and UN-IAP and sponsored by Mon State Women's Affairs Working Committee was opened at Ramanya Hall of Mon State Peace and Development Council Office yesterday morning. The opening ceremony was attended by Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Brig-Gen Myint Swe.

Also present were Secretary of Mon State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Maw Maw and departmental officials, Leader of Mon State Committee for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation the Commander's wife Daw Khin Thet Htay and Women's Affairs Working Committee members, officials from Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs (MNWCWA), women staff from the departments and trainees. The commander delivered an opening speech. Working Committee member Daw Htay Htay read out the message of Vice-Chairperson of MNWCWA Prof Dr Daw May May Yee. The chairperson of Mon State WCWA, Commissioner of Mon State General Administration Department U Kyin Pe and Leader of Mon State Committee for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation Daw Khin Thet Htay made speeches. Daw Htoo Raw of MNWCWA explained the purpose of opening the course which will last from 10 to 12 October at Domestic Training School. Altogether 33 trainees from 10 townships in Mon State are attending the course.

  Prizes presented to winners of Tatmadaw Beach Volleyball Tourney

Yangon, 11 Oct- The final matches of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services' Shield (Army, Navy and Air) Men's and Women's Beach Volleyball and prize-presentation ceremony were held at the local battalion sports ground of South-West Command at 9 am on 9 October. It was attended by Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Chairman South-West Command Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and wife, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tint Swe and senior officers of the Command, commanding officers of regiment and battalion, their families and fans.

At the prize-presentation ceremony of women's beach volleyball teams, officials presented third prize to the Office of Commander-in-Chief (Air) team and second prize to South-West Command team, and Daw Khin Lay Thet, wife of the commander, first prize to Yangon Command team. The championship Shield and other prizes were also presented to winners. Then, prizes were presented to men's beach volleyball teams.

The officials presented third prize to the Office of Commander-in-Chief (Navy) team and second prize to South-West Command team, and Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tint Swe first prize and individual prize to Yangon Command team. Later, on behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann presented the championship Shield to Yangon Command team. Afterwards, the ceremony came to a close. The commander also attended a ceremony to present the flag to participants of Ayeyawady Division who will take part in the Ninth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions at Ayar Shwewar Hall, Pathein Township, at 8 am on 10 October. In charge of Ayeyawady Division team Maj Maung Htay reported on programmes regarding the competition. Then, the commander presented the flag to Maj Maung Htay, and the ceremony came to an end.

Mayor inspects agricultural and livestock breeding works

Yangon, 11 Oct- Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, accompanied by responsible officials, inspected agriculture and livestock breeding projects for staff welfare of Mingaladon Township General Administration Department in Mingaladon Township, Yangon Division, this morning and fulfilled the requirements. Head of the Department U Myint Swe and officials reported on work being carried out for vegetable patches, raising of ducks, pigs and broilers to the mayor. The mayor gave instructions on meeting the target in raising layers, broilers and pigs, extension of vegetable cultivation and selling farm produce at tax-free markets and local markets at reasonable prices.

At the Htaukkyant Layers Farm, Deputy Head of Production Division Maj Tin Tun Win reported on raising of 130,000 layers, daily egg production and selling of the fish, meat and eggs at the tax-free markets to the mayor who left necessary instructions. Chicks for layers from the farm are being sold to private breeders on commercial scale, and chicks for broilers will also be sold soon. Those who want to buy the chicks may dial 600296 or 727085.

( 6 Visiting Thai delegation tours Yangon

Yangon, 11 Oct- Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein met with visiting Thai goodwill delegation led by General Secretary of Thai-Myanmar Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association General Sanan Kajornklam at his office at 9 am yesterday. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein and departmental heads. Minister for Culture U Win Sein met the Thai goodwill delegation at his office at 10.30 am yesterday.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt and heads of department. Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met with the Thai goodwill delegation at his office at 1 pm yesterday. Also present were Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun and departmental heads. The Thai goodwill delegation called on Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone at the minister's office at 2 pm yesterday. Also present were departmental heads. The Thai goodwill delegation, accompanied by Secretary of Myanmar-Thai Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association Col Ba Hein (Retd) and officials, arrived at the Shwedagon Pagoda at 4 pm on that day. They were welcomed there by members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees. After making donations, they paid homage to the pagoda.

The goodwill delegation, together with Secretary Col Ba Hein (Retd) and officials, visited the Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image and donated cash to the image funds this morning. They proceeded to Myanma Gems Museum and the Gems Mart, where they were welcomed and conducted round the Museum, the Gems Mart and Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium. Afterwards, they went to the Drug Elimination Museum. After viewing the booths in the museum, the members of the delegation signed in the visitors' book. Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met with General Sanan Kajornklam and party at his office this afternoon. Also present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and departmental heads. The Thai goodwill delegation left here for home by air this evening. They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Secretary of Myanmar-Thai Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association Col Ba Hein (Retd) and members.

Entries invited for Marching and Military Songs Competitions

Yangon, 11 Oct- Hailing the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, which falls on 27 March 2002, the Sub-committee for Organizing Marching and Military Songs Competitions of the Work Committee for Poem and Arts Competition chaired by Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt announced today that the Sub-committee will hold the Marching and Military Song Competitions. There will be only one open level in the marching song competition and two levels level 1 and level 2 in the military song competition. First, second, third and special prizes will be presented to winners.

The entry songs are to feature the 12 objectives of the State, the objectives of the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day and twelve noble traditions of the Tatmadaw. Anyone can take part in the marching song competition; composers and vocalists who can take part in the level 1 militry song competition are not entitled to participate in the level 2. Those who have won first, second and third prizes at the level 2 military song competition are to take part in the level 1. Competitors individually or in groups are allowed to send one entry only.

The marching songs are to be composed in accordance with the styles and systems of marching songs. Entries are to be composed in accord with the traditional culture and composing method of Myanmar. The duration of a song must be between four and six minutes. Only one song is to be recorded on each tape. A suitable title for the entry can be given. Ten copies of lyrics of the entry and a copy of musical notes, together with a tape, are to be sent. The entrants are to send their curriculum vitae with three passport size colour photos. After the entries have been tentatively selected, the entrants will be informed. The entries are to be sent to Secretary of the Sub-committee U Ko Ko Htwe, Myanma Radio and Television, Pyay Road, not later than 31 December.

5-hr interruption of CDMA on 14, 20 Oct

Yangon, 11 Oct- There will be a short interruption of CDMA telephone lines in Yangon on 14 October beginning 00.30 am as new equipment will be installed at Weluwun and Shwegondaing CDMA exchange stations. Operation of CDMA mobile phones (0980 3xxxx) and CDMA fixed phones (70xxxx and 71xxxx) will be stopped for about five hours during the installation period beginning 00.30 am on 14 October at the Weluwun exchange. At the Shwegondaing exchange, operation of the CDMA fixed phones (72xxxx) will be interrupted for about five hours beginning 00.30 am on 20 October. The existing machines of the two stations will be substituted with the new ones to improve the functions of the CDMA phone system.

( 8 ) Mid-year Myanma Gems Emporium continues

Yangon, 11 Oct- Sales of jade lots through tender system of Myanma Mid-year Gems Emporium continued for the second day at Myanma Gems Mart on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road from 9 am to 5 pm today. Local and foreign gem merchants bought 18 jade lots at a price of US $ 2,287,269 today. Moreover, fixed price gems, jade figurines and jade carvings fetched US$ 2,580. Sales of jade lots through competitive bidding system continues tomorrow. A total of 603 gem merchants  298 from abroad and 305 local merchants  arrived here to attend the emporium.

Muse Consumer Products Expo' 2001 opened

Yangon, 11 Oct- The opening of Muse Consumer Products Expo' 2001 was held at the entrance to the Golden Palace Travel Centre in Muse on 2 October morning. It was attended by the officials of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council, member of Muse District Peace and Development Council Head of Muse District Administration Department U Thaung and township level officials, departmental heads, Managing Director of Dragon Exhibitions Ltd U Aung Aung and members, officials from the booths and invited guests.

Head of District Administration Department U Thaung, Mayor of Shwe Lee in Tehon Sub-division Shi Sein Cheng and Managing Director of Star Travel Agency U Kyi Myint formally opened the expo organized by Dragon Exhibitions Ltd and held with the permission of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council. Then, officials and guests looked around the expo. Textiles from home and abroad, cosmetics, personal goods, plasticwares, foodstuff, electronic appliances, house-wares, small machines and tools, skin lotions, paper and stationery, sportswares were displayed with demonstration for sales promotion of Super Stars Models Agency led by Ko Thurein (Cho Gyi) at the expo held from 2 to 6 October.

( 9Tatmadaw under-21 Soccer Final on 12 Oct

Yangon, 11 Oct - The final of the 2001 Defence Services Commander-in-Chief's Trophy 17th Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Under-21 Soccer Tournament will take place in the Youth Training Centre, Thuwunna, at 3.30 pm on 12 October. The Central Command will play against the South-West Command in the match. To secure the third place, Camp Commandant's Office of the Ministry of Defence beat the South-East Command 4-0 at today's match of the tournament.

Milk powder for day nursery

Yangon,11 Oct- A ceremony to donate milk powder to the Day Nursery of Social Welfare Department in Hpaan was held on 9 October and it was attended by Chairman of Kayin State Peace and Development Council Col Maung Shein and officials, Executive Secretary of MRCS Col Aung Than and Red Cross Supervisory Committee members and departmental officials. Head of Day Nursery Daw Aye Aye Maw accepted two bags of milk powder for pre- primary school children. Afterwards, Col Maung Shein attended the ceremony to present bicycles to seven townships in Kayin State, held at the meeting hall of the Kayin State Peace and Development Council the same day. Bicycles and milk powder were donated by the Myanmar Red Cross Society and the International Red Cross Committee. Head of Kayin State Health Department Dr Myo Lwin accepted the bicycles.
