Yangon, 5 Oct-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe received the high-ranking delegation of the International Labour Organization led by former Governor-General of Australia the Right Honourable Sir Ninian Stephen at Credentials Hall of Pyithu Hluttaw Building on Pyay Road at 3 pm today. Present on the occasion together with Senior General Than Shwe were Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet. Present together with former Governor-General of Australia the Right Honourable Sir Ninian Stephen were former Secretary of Labour of the Philippines Ms Nieves Roldan-Confesor, former Chief Justice of Sri Lanka Mr Kulatilaka Arthanayake Parinda Ranasinghe and former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland and Judge of European Court of Human Rights Mr Jerzy Makarczyk.

 Secretary-1 previews Mid-year Myanma Gems Emporium

Yangon, 5 Oct - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt previewed the Mid-year Myanma Gems Emporium for 2001 this morning. The Secretary-1, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Myanmar Gems Hall on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 9.20 am.

 On arrival there, the Secretary-1 and party were welcomed by ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, deputy ministers, members of the Central Committee for Organizing the Mid-year Myanma Gems Emporium and officials. The Secretary-1 and party inspected lots of gems to be sold at fixed prices, jewels, jade figurines, private jewellery shops and gems mosaic shops on the ground floor of the building of Myanmar Gems Hall and raw jade stones displayed around the building.

 Then, the Secretary-1 and party inspected lots of gems and pearls on display on the third floor. Patron of the Central Committee Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Chairman of the Central Committee Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein and Secretary of the Central Committee Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo conducted the Secretary-1 and party round the emporium. The Secretary-1 left instructions.

Myanmar-Thai Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association meets

Yangon, 5 Oct -Myanmar-Thai Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association held a meeting at the Tatmadaw Guest House this evening with an address by Patron of the Association Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

 The Secretary-1 said the association was formed to enable not only government bodies but also non-governmental organizations to extend bilateral relations and cooperation with Thailand. The Thai side has also formed a similar NGO. The association should foster relations and cooperation with its sister association in Thailand to serve the interests of the two nations.

 The meeting was held with the participation of the association patrons to make known the association's organizational set-up, sector-wise functions, coordination work being made for the future programmes and the present situation and to ensure that the State can render necessary assistance to it. Chairman of the Association Lt-Gen Kyaw Than (Retired) and executives reported to the meeting on renovation of the building of the Association and efforts for development of the Association.

The Secretary-1 gave suggestions. Also present at the meeting were patrons of the Association ministers, the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, invited ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and guests.

 Yangon, 5 Oct- Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha met FAO resident representative Mr. Bhaskar Barua at his office at 1.30 pm yesterday afternoon. Also present at the call were officials of the ministry.

Present were Deputy Minister for Hotels & Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism U Khin Maung Latt, Managing-Director U Kyi Tun of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and Officials.

Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee meets

Yangon, 5 Oct - The 2001 Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee held a meeting at Myanma Gems Mart this morning, with an address by Patron of the committee Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint. Also present were Chairman of the committee Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Vice-Chairmen Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, Secretary Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo and the Central Committee members. The meeting discussed replies received so far from foreign gem merchants and work done by jade, gems, pearl management and security subcommittees to hold the Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium.

Myanmar delegation arrives back from China

Yangon, 5 Oct - Chairman of Myanmar Artists and Artisans Association (Central) U Thaung Han, Vice-Chairman U Saw Hlaing, Treasurer U Aung Thwin and Secretary U Thant Zin (Bagyi Hla Tin Tun) arrived back here by air yesterday morning after attending the opening of the centenary Chinese painting exhibition held in Beijing on 30 September at the invitation of the Chinese Painters Association of the People's Republic of China. The Myanmar delegation also attended the seminar on the prospects of Asian painting held on 30 September in Beijing. The Myanmar delegation members submitted papers on the evolution of Myanmar painting, the outlook on the centenary Chinese painting exhibition and the future of Asian painting. Delegations from 21 nations attended the seminar.

Minister inspects new microwave links in Bago

Yangon, 5 Oct - Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, together with officials, inspected the machinery installed for Yangon-Bago digital microwave link at the microwave station in Bago this morning. Then, the minister went to Bago Auto-Exchange and inspected the installation of machinery to extend auto-exchange lines. Later, the minister proceeded to Nyaunglaybin and inspected the plot chosen for construction of the building for the microwave station in Nyaunglaybin. Afterwards, the minister inspected the installation of machinery for Bago-DaikU digital microwave link at DaikU Microwave Station. Then, the minister also inspected the auto-exchange in DaikU and gave instructions.

Translated book to mark 55th Armed Forces Day comes out

Yangon, 5 Oct-Poetry and Art Competitions Organizing Work Committee for 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, with Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt as chairman has published a book that carries English translation of prize winning poems, articles, essays and short stories. In the foreword of Chairman of the committee Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, it is mentioned that by reading this book, one will enjoy full pleasure of various kinds of literary works and find the spirit, courage, strength and culture of Myanmar.

( 6 Export and Import Procedure Course concludes

Yangon, 5 Oct -Export and Import Procedure Course No 20 sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce concluded at the ministry this morning, with an address by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone. Also present were Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, the directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry, officials, course instructors and trainees. First, the minister delivered an address. He then presented certificates to the trainees. A trainee spoke words of thanks.

 

"Soon" offered to members of Sangha

Yangon, 5 Oct -The Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading offered "soon" to 450 members of the Sangha in Mogok Soonsar Kyaungsaung at State Pariyatti Sasana University (Yangon) this morning, attended by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone. Officials led by Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and wife Daw Aye Pyi Wai Khin, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan presented offertories to the monks.

Minister's Cup Soccer Tourney opens

Yangon, 5 Oct -A ceremony to open Minister for Commerce's Cup Soccer Tournament for the first time was held at the Aung San Stadium this afternoon. Present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, departmental heads, guests, enthusiasts and footballers. The minister made an opening address. Officers of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading team beat officers of Minister's Office, the Directorate of Trade and the Border Trade Department team 3-2 today.

( 7 Commander inspects preparations for opening of multimedia teaching centres

Yangon, 5 Oct -Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, together with Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tint Swe and departmental officials, inspected the preparations for the opening of a multimedia teaching centre at No 4 Basic Education High School in Pathein yesterday morning.

The commander and party also enjoyed an entertainment programme presented by students. Headmistress Daw Thi Thi Aung and Secretary of the School Board of Trustees U Thein Aung reported on efforts for the opening of the multimedia teaching centre. The commander called for concerted efforts for the promotion of education standard, and attended to the requirements. Then, the commander went to No 6 Basic Education High School in Pathein. The headmistress and officials reported on efforts for the opening of a multimedia teaching centre. The commander and party enjoyed an entertainment programme presented by students. Headmistress Daw San San Htay and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Ba Ngwe reported on concerted efforts for the opening of the multimedia teaching centre, and attended to the requirements.

Co-ord meeting between Divisional Council and departments held

Yangon, 5 Oct - A coordination meeting between Bago Division Peace and Development Council and division level departments was held at the meeting hall of the Division Peace and Development Council in Toungoo yesterday morning. It was attended by Bago Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Southern Command Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Secretary Lt-Col Aung Min and members, chairmen of Bago District and Taungoo District Peace and Developemnt Councils and departmental officials.

 The Commander spoke of the need for cooperation of departments for exceeding the project targets, boosting of production, extension of agricultural work, promotion of education and health standard and ensuring of smooth transport. The officials concerned reported on work being done and future tasks. The secretary of the Division Peace and Development Council gave a supplementary report. The ceremony came to a close with the concluding remarks by the commander.

( 8 USDA executives in Yangon Division meet

Yangon, 5 Oct-Member of the Central Panel of Patrons of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Patron of Yangon Division USDA Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than attended the monthly coordination meeting of division/district/township USDA executives of Yangon Division at the office of Yangon Division USDA on West Race Course Road this morning and made a speech on the occasion.

Also present on the occasion were USDA CEC Member In-charge of Yangon Division Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Commander of No 4 Military Region Brig-Gen Myo Myint, Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint and members, chairmen of District Peace and Development Councils, Secretary of Yangon Division USDA U Aye Myint and executives, and others.

 Daw Thin Thin Moe of Yangon Division USDA and Daw Hnin Ei Ei Khin of Mingala Taungnyunt Township USDA acted as masters of ceremonies. Speaking on the occasion, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than spoke of the need to increase the number of the members of the association, to raise the funds, to carry out the tasks systematically, to abide by rules and to have good morals, to constantly carry out organizational work and to make concerted efforts for qualitative and quantitative improvement of the association. Then, the commander and party inspected the computer course conducted by Yangon Division USDA and attended to the needs. Afterwards, USDA CEC member Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa gave instructions on work to be carried out by division/district/township USDA executives in Yangon Division in the second session of the meeting.

Nursery Market Festival continues

Yangon, 5 Oct - People visited the Nursery Market Festival at the Myepadetha Park in Bahan Township and studied the booth on agriculture today. The growers were provided with agricultural methods at the festival. Books on agricultural methods are available there.

( 9 )  1.92m stimulant tablets seized in Kengtung

Yangon, 5 Oct - Kengtung District Court handed down prison terms on five people for drug trafficking on 4 September this year. A combined team comprising the local intelligence unit and Kengtung Special Anti-drug Squad, acting on information, stopped and searched a ten-wheeled truck with number plate 2Kha/3952 and seized 1,920,000 stimulant tablets bearing the letters "WY" on 2 January 2001. Kengtung Police Station filed driver Zaw Win, 30, son of U Ko Lay of No 41, Hintha Street, Kantha Ward, Taunggyi, Tun Yee, 28, son of U Maung San of Mante Village, Bahmo Township, Aung Zaw Min, 22, son of U Than Myint of Wapya Ward, Kyauggyisu, Taunggyi, manager of the truck Sai Nyi, 56, son of U Khe Hsai of No 136, Yayayekwin Ward, Taunggyi, and Win Myint, owner of the truck, 44, son of U Paw San, No 40, Kyaingin Ward, Ward 5, Kengtung, under Section 15/19(A)21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Kengtung District Court heard the case and sentenced Zaw Win to 15 years' imprisonment under Section 19(A), Tun Yee, Aung Zaw Min and Sai Nyi to life imprisonment under Section 19(A) and Win Myint to life imprisonment under Section 19(A)21.
