( 1 Senior General Than Shwe and wife arrive back from Malaysia

Yangon, 27 Sept- State Peace and Development Council Chairman Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing arrived back at Yangon International Airport this afternoon by special flight after paying a goodwill visit to Malaysia at the invitation of Prime Minister Dato Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad and wife Datin Seri Dr Siti Hasmah Haji Mohamad Ali.

The Myanmar delegation led by Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing was welcomed back at the airport by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife Daw Khin Cho Oo, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Kyi Min and wife, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe and wife, Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and wife, Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun and wife, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla and wife, Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and wife, ministers, senior military officers, heads of department, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham and wife, heads of diplomatic missions and UN agencies in Yangon and their wives, Charge d' Affaires a.i. of the Malaysian Embassy in Yangon Mr Rustam bin Yahaya and wife.

Myanmar and Malaysia find new areas of bilateral political and economic cooperation

Malaysian Prime Minister and wife host dinner in honour of Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing

Yangon, 27 Sept - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, accompanied by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and members, left here for Malaysia by special flight at 7.15 am on 25 September to pay a goodwill visit there, at the invitation of Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad and wife Datin Seri Dr Siti Hasmah Haji Mohamad Ali, and arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 11 am local time.

 Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and members were welcomed there by Ambassador of Myanmar U Hla Maung and Head of the Protocol Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Mr Datuk Abdullah Haji Kuntom on board the plane.

Then, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and members were welcomed by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Mr Datuk Seri Syed Hamid bin Syed Jaafar Albar and wife, Deputy Minister of Transport Tan Sri Ramly Ngah Talib and wife, Ambassador of Malaysia Mr Dato' Muhammad Bin Noh and wife and members of the welcoming committee. Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and members were greeted by Myanmar Ambassador U Hla Maung and wife, Military Attache of Myanmar Col Ko Ko Kyaw and wife and staff and family members of Myanmar Embassy and the Office of Military Attache at the entrance of VIP lounge.

They were greeted by President of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint, Vice-Presidents U Win Aung and U Htein Win, who had already arrived in Kuala Lumpur. Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and members cordially conversed with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and wife and the Deputy Minister of Transport and wife. Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and members, together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and wife and the Deputy Minister of Transport and wife, went to the Hotel Nikko, at which they will put up, in a motorcade. Senior General Than Shwe, accompanied by Myanmar goodwill delegation members, left the Hotel for Putrajaya, where the Malaysian Prime Minister's Office is located, in a motorcade at 2.30 pm.

 The Malaysian Prime Minister welcomed and introduced them to his welcoming party. Senior General Than Shwe and the Malaysian Prime Minister posed for a documentary photo. The Malaysian Prime Minister cordially greeted Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and Myanmar goodwill delegation members, and they had a group photo taken. Senior General Than Shwe signed in the visitors' book, and together with the Malaysian Prime Minister, posed for a documentary photo.

Senior General Than Shwe and party were briefed by the Malaysian Prime Minister on tasks being implemented for development of Putrajaya. The two Prime Ministers held a private meeting on the fifth floor of the Prime Minister's Office. Also present together with the Senior General were Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Myanmar Ambassador U Hla Maung, and together with the Malaysian Prime Minister were Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Seri Syed Hamid bin Syed Jaafar Albar, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dato Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, Malaysian Ambassador to Myanmar Dato' Muhammad Bin Noh and officials.

Afterwards, the two dele-gations held a meeting on the third floor of the Prime Minister's Office. Present on Malaysian side were Prime Minister Dato Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Seri Syed Hamid bin Syed Jaafar Albar, Minister of International Trade and Industry Dato Seri Rafidah Aziz, Minister of Information Tan Sri Mohd Khalil Yaakob, Minister of Culture, Arts and Tourism Datuk Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir and the deputy ministers, high ranking officials, Malaysian Ambassador to Myanmar Dato Muhammad Bin Noh and officials. They discussed matters concerning maintaining the existing friendship between the two countries and boosting of current undertakings being carried out in the field of trade, investment, tourism and technical co-operation. After the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed.

 It was attended by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, the ministers, the deputy ministers, the Myan-mar ambassador, heads of department, the Prime Minister of Malaysia and the ministers, the deputy ministers, the Malay-sian ambassador and high-ranking officials. Minister at the Office of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel and Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Seri Syed Hamid bin Syed Jaafar Albar signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of Malaysia on the Information Co-operation ( In the field of News Exchange, Radio and Television Broadcasting) and exchanged the documents.

 Then, Minister at the Office of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel and Minister of Culture, Arts and Tourism Datuk Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir signed Agreement Between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of Malaysia on Cooperation In Tourism and exchanged the documents. After the ceremony, Senior General Than Shwe and party left the Prime Minister's Office for Hotel Nikko.

 The Prime Minister of Malaysia saw off Senior General Than and party. Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party attended a dinner in their honour hosted by the Malaysian Prime Minister and wife at Seri Perdana in Putra Jaya in the evening. On arrival at Seri Perdana in Putra Jaya at 8.30 pm, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and members of Myanmar delegation were welcomed by Prime Minister Dato Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad Ali and wife Datin Seri Dr Siti Hasmah Haji Mohamad Ali.

Then, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing signed in the visitors' book. Next, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, the Malaysian Prime Minister and wife and the Malaysian Foreign Minister and wife met in the special room and had a cordial chat. Afterwards, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing presented gifts to the Malaysian Prime Minister and wife. The ministers, the deputy ministers and high-ranking officials of Malaysia who attended the dinner cordially greeted Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing. Members of Myanmar delegation, the Myanmar Ambassador to Malaysia and wife, the Military Attach'e and wife cordially greet the Malaysian Prime Minister and wife.

Next, the ambassadors, Charge d' Affair's and their wives of ASEAN member countries, Japan and People's Republic of China who attended the dinner cordially greeted Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, the Prime Minister of Malaysia and wife. Then, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, the Prime Minister of Malaysia and wife had a group photo. The Prime Minster of Malaysia and wife hosted the dinner to Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party. The guests were entertained to songs during the dinner. The Malaysian Prime Minister and wife cordially greeted Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing and the delegation members. The Myanmar delegation rest for the night at Hotel Nikko. Daw Kyaing Kyaing together with Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of the Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council, Daw Khin Swe Soe, wife of the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Puan Sri Raja Noora Ashikin Raja Abdullah, wife of the Deputy Minister of Transport of Malaysia, Daw Thanda Khin, wife of the Myanmar Ambassador, Military Attache Col Ko Ko Kyaw and wife Daw Thuza Myat Mon, visited the Royal Selangor Sdn Bhd on 25 September. They were conducted around the production sectors by Director of the company Datin Padulea Chen Mun Kuen and officials. Daw Kyaing Kyaing and the company director exchanged gifts.

Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party then visited Kuala Lumpur City Centre. Senior General Than Shwe and delegation, accompanied by Deputy Minister of Transport of Malaysia Tan Sri Ramly Ngah Talib, the Myanmar Ambassador, the Malaysian Ambassador and officials, visited Multimedia Development Corporation at Cyberjaya. They were welcomed by Executive Chairman of the company Tan Sri Dato Dr Othman Yeop Abdullah, members of the board of directors and experts. The executive chairman extended greetings. He explained setting up of a multimedia super corridor in Putrajaya and Cyberjaya new towns as the first step in establishing a constant learning society in Malaysia and functions of the corporation with audio-visual aids. The Senior General after asking questions, expressed pleasure to know the practical successes of the corporation. The executive chairman and experts replied to queries raised by the Myanmar ministers and deputy ministers. The Senior General exchanged gifts with the executive chairman. The Senior General and delegation then visited Petronas Twin Towers.

On the 41st floor of the Tower No 1, Senior General Manager of the Petronas Company Mr Emcik Mohd Azhar Osman Khairuddin reported on points of the Twin Towers. The Senior General and delegation proceeded to the Tower No 1 through the bridge linking the two buildings at the 42nd floor. On the 83rd floor of the Tower, Senior General Than Shwe signed in the visitors' book. They also viewed the development of Kuala Lumpur. The Senior General and delegation cordially met with Chairman of Petronas Company Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican and members at the Petronas Club. The Senior General exchanged gifts with the chairman. On 26 September afternoon, Senior General Than Shwe attended the luncheon held by National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia in his honour at Renaissance Hotel.

Also present at the luncheon were Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister U Aung Thaung, Minister Brig-Gen Abel, Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister U Thaung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Deputy Minister Prof Dr Kyaw Myint, Myanmar Ambassador U Hla Maung, Military Attache Col Ko Ko Kyaw, Director-General Lt-Col Pe Nyein, heads of department, President of UMFCCI U Win Myint, Vice-Presidents U Win Aung and U Htein Win and officials.

Malaysian Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid bin Syed Jaafar Albar, high level officials, Vice-President of National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia Dato Syed Amin Aljeffri, officials and entrepreneurs. Dato Syed Amin Aljeffri, extended greetings, explaining the areas of bilateral economic cooperation. Senior General Than Shwe said the goodwill and cooperation between the two nations are further flourishing, thanking Malaysia for its diplomatic and economic assistance. Malaysia, which is the third largest investor in Myanmar, plays a vital role in Myanmar's nation-development undertakings. The volume trade between the two nations is also increasing. There still left many new areas of cooperation, expressing belief that combination of the rich resources of Myanmar and advanced technology and investment from Malaysia will benefit the peoples of both nations. Ministers Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, U Aung Thaung, Brig-Gen Abel, Brig-Gen Lun Thi and U Thaung met with the vice-president of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysian and Malaysian merchants and industrialists.

 Minister Brig-Gen Abel explained matters related to the market economic system being practised in Myanmar and encouragement being given to investors, and replied to queries raised by the Malaysian merchants and industrialists. Then, President of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint and Vice-President of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia Dato Syed Amin Aljeffri signed an agreement on cooperation of the chambers of commerce and industry of the two countries, and exchanged documents.

 

 The National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia hosted a luncheon in honour of Senior General Than Shwe and delegation members and invited guests. During the luncheon, the Senior General and the vice-president of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia exchanged gifts. After the luncheon, the Senior General and party left for the Hotel Nikko. The Senior General and wife and Myanmar delegation, accompanied by the deputy minister of transport of Malaysia and wife and officials, left the Hotel Nikko for TUDM airforce base in Subang. The Senior General and wife and party left for Langkawi in Kedah Province by special flight.

They were welcomed by Chief Minister of Kedah Dato Seri Syed Razak bin Syed Zain and wife Datin Seri Sharifah Hamidha binti Syed Hamib and officials. The Senior General and wife and party proceeded to the Andaman Hotel. The Chief Minister of Kedah hosted a dinner in honour of the Senior General and wife and Myanmar delegation at the Andaman Hotel. Present together with the Senior General and wife were the Secretary-1 and wife, ministers, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win and wife, Deputy Minister Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, the Ambassador of Myanmar to Malaysia and wife, the military attache and wife, the director-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office and heads of department. The dinner was also attended by the deputy minister for transport of Malaysia and wife, the chief minister of Kedah and wife, heads of department and officials. Before and during the dinner, traditional dances of Langkawi region were presented.

The chief minister of Kedah spoke on the occasion. The chief minister of Kedah and the Senior General exchanged gifts. Daw Kyaing Kyaing also presented gifts to the wife of the chief minister of Kedah. The Senior General and wife and Myanmar goodwill delegation stopped for the night at the Andaman Hotel in Langkawi on 26 September. The Senior General and party left for the office of Langkawi Development Authority at 8.30 am this morning in a special motorcade. General Manager Dato Fainal Karib bin Abdul Rahim gave an account of the location of Langkawi island and area, development tasks, future tasks and the annual arrival of tourists to the island with audio-visual aids. The Senior General spoke words of thanks.

Then, the general manager and the Senior General exchanged gifts. Next, the Senior General and party went to the Galeria Perdana Museum and viewed the objects displayed at the museum including the photos of Prime Minister Dato Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad and wife, paintings and gifts presented by other nations and international organizations. The Senior General signed in the visitors' book. The curator and the Senior General exchanged gifts.

Then, the Senior General and party left for the Andaman Hotel in a special motorcade. The Senior General and wife and Myanmar goodwill delegation left the Andaman Hotel for Langkawi International Airport in a special motorcade at 2.30 pm today. The Senior General and wife and Myanmar delegation were seen off at the airport by the deputy minister of transport of Malaysia and wife and the chief minister of Kedah Province and wife, the Ambassador of Myanmar to Malaysia and wife, the military attache and wife, the Ambassador of Malaysia to Myanmar and wife and officials.

Afterwards, the Senior General and party left Malaysia for Myanmar by special flight at 3.15 pm local standard time and arrived back here this evening. Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin met with Malaysian dealers of agricultural produce at the Hotel Nikko in Kuala Lumpur at 9.30 am on 26 September and discussed import of maize, sunflower, sesame, cotton, beans and peas and vegetables to Malaysia.

 Under the arrangement of Malaysia-Myanmar Friendship Association, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin had discussions on matters related to investment opportunities of the Myanmar agriculture sector for Malaysian agricultural entrepreneurs and import of rice, broken rice, cotton, maize, sunflower, sesame and vegetables to Malaysia at the Hotel Renaissance in Kuala Lumpur at 11 am. Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi met with Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Tan Sri Bernard Donpok, who is undertaking the oil and natural gas exploration work, at the office of the Prime Minister in Putrajya, Kuala Lumpur, at 8.45 am on 26 September, and discussed matters pertaining to energy. Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi met with Chairman of Petronas Company Tan Sri Mohdhassam Marican at the Petronas Twin Towers at 10 am and discussed matters relating to cooperation in the energy sector.

( 3MWJA CEC meets

Yangon, 27 Sept-The Central Executive Committee of the Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association held its meeting No 9/2001 at the meeting hall of MWJA this afternoon. It was attended by MWJA Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung), Vice Chairman U Than Maung (Than Maung ), Secretary U Hla Tun (Hla Tun-Twantay) and CEC members. Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung) presided over the meeting and CEC member U Khin Swe (Shwe Son Nyo) acted as master of ceremonies. Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung) made a speech on the occasion. Members of the Work Committee reported matters on office works. Then, a general round of discussions followed. The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the MWJA chairman.

Chairman of Armed Forces Committee of Upper House of Thailand concludes visit

Yangon, 27 Sept - A goodwill delegation led by Chairman of Armed Forces Committee of Upper House of Thailand General Arthit Kamlang-Ek and party left here by air this evening. The Thai General and party were seen off at Yangon International Airport by State Peace and Development Council Member Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Yangon Command Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Chief of Defence Services Intelligence Bureau Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, senior officers of the Ministry of Defence, Ambassador of Thailand to Myanmar Mr Oum Maolanon and Military Attache Col Chaiwat Satondee and officials.

London Myanmar (PGA) C'ship Golf Tour continues

Yangon, 27 Sept- The London Myanmar (PGA) Championship, organized by Myanmar Professional Golfer's Association and Asian Professional Golfer's Association and mainly sponsored by Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd continued for the second day at Yedagun Golf Club of Mandalay City Development Committee this morning.

 It was attended by officials of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council, Secretary of Mandalay City Development Committee Lt-Gen Maung Pu and committee members, invited guests, Group Brand Manager of Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd Mr Bob Ortega and Corporate Affairs U Myint Thein and officials, executives of Myanmar Golf Federation, golfers and golf fans. Humid conditions made storing difficult on the beautifully upgraded Yedagun Taung golf club Mandalay site of second day's play of the inaugural London-Myanmar PGA championship 2001.

As score wilted under the hot sun, Soe Kyaw Naing and APGA player tying second on the first day, kept his cool to fire 3 birdies en route a 1 over 73 and a total of 143 to lead by 1. Yesterday's leader Myint Thaung, winner of numerous events on the local tour blamed his 75 on tiredness.

 "I just would not hit the green", he complained. But he is confident of making the winners circle on the final day. Aung Hla Han (HGM) played badly struggled to a 79 to drop himself to 17th position. The Thai pair of Songphan Phuakhong and Pornsakon Tipsanit shot 147 and 148 to trail by 3 and 4 shots respectively. In the Amateur division, up and coming national team player Win Htwe Hlaing fired a brilliant 4 Birdie 1 Eagle 72.

This however, was not enough to catch overnight leader and Mandalay local Amateur stand out Chit San who also fired back to back 36 to shoot 72 to be in overall third position for the tournament and lead the Amateur division by 4 strokes. Other notable scores are Than Aung (KM golf centre) (74-73) 147 and Zaw Paing Oo (Pan West) (74-73) 147. The Pro cut-off of 40 players stands at 163 and 9 Amateurs made it. KM Golf Centre, Callaway Golf, Wilson Golf and Ping open golf stores for local golfers and those interested in golf at the club. Yangon Airways, Canon, Kaung Myat, Pan-West (Callaway), Ping, Wilson, Novotel Hotel also co-sponsored the tour with the aim of promoting Myanmar's golf standard and turning out outstanding golfers. Fuji Gems, Chanlon Gems, UE Tiger's Head Cement, Ve Ve soft drinks, Mandalay Textile Factory, Europe-Asia Commercial, AWB Bank and Hong Pang wires also sponsored the tour. The third round continues tomorrow.

( 6 The Myanma Alin and the Kyemon to be published in Magway and Taunggyi

Yangon, 27 Sept-The Ministry of Information has been implementing a plan to publish dailies in States and Divisions starting from 2001-2002 fiscal year. According to the plan, the Myanma Alin, the Kyemon and the New Light of Myanmar dailies have been published in Mandalay and directly distributed to the cities in States and Divisions in Upper Myanmar since 1st March 2001. Sub-printing houses of the Myanma Alin and the Kyemon in Magway and Taunggyi have been already equipped with modern offset printing machines. The Myanma Alin and the Kyemon will be published at the printing houses in the above-mentioned cities and directly distributed to cities, towns and villages in the respective regions starting from 1 October. Sales agents of the dailies are to collect the Myanma Alin and the Kyemon at the printing houses and to deliver them to the subscribers. The New Light of Myanmar continues to be delivered as before. The sub-printing house in Taunggyi will publish and directly distribute the dailies to Taunggyi and the towns in Shan State (South) including Loikaw and the towns in Kayah State. The sub-printing house in Magway will publish and directly distribute the dailies to Magway and the towns in Magway Division plus An Township and the townships in An region.

( 7 Drug trafficker gets imprisonment

Yangon, 27 Sept - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Lashio Special Anti-drug Squad searched the bus on its way to Lashio from Kutkai at Yepu check-point, Hsenwi, at 2.45 pm on 26 May and seized 7,000 stimulant tablets. The authorities arrested passenger Kyaw Win, 34, son of U Than Htay of Zedan Ward, Ywangan and filed a case against him under Sections 15 and 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. On 16 August, Lashio District Court sentenced him to 5 years' imprisonment under Section 15 and 15 years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) to serve separately.
