Yangon, 21 Aug- At the invitation of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe, President of the Republic of Indonesia Madame Megawati Soekarnoputri will pay a working visit to the Union of Myanmar in the near future.

Yangon, 20 Aug- The goodwill delegation led by Prime Minister of Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Boungnang Vorachith and Madame Khammeung Vorachith, who are currently here on a goodwill visit at the invitation of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, accompanied by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and wife Daw Khin Myo Oo, Myanmar Ambassador to LPDR U Sein Win Aung and wife Daw Htwe Yi, Daw Saw Mya, wife of the Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet, Ambassador of LPDR Mr Ly Bounkham and wife Mrs Onekeo Bounkham and officials, visited Nyaung-hnapin vegetable cultivation and poultry farming special zone in Hmawby Township this morning and City Cultivation and Recreation Camp of Yangon City Development Committee in Uto-Kya-in region in Taikkyi Township in the afternoon.

The visiting Prime Minister and Madame Kham-meung Vorachith and members of the goodwill delegation arrived at Hmawby San Hall of the vegetable cultivation and poultry farming special zone at 9 am. The visiting Prime Minister and Madame Kham-meung Vorachith and members of the goodwill delegation were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, senior military officers, heads of department, entrepreneurs and officials. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than reported on establishment of the special zone in accordance with the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, its location and area, the area where vegetables are to be cultivated and poultry to be raised and fish to be bred, drainage, power supply, job opportunities for local people and future tasks.

The commander and officials replied to the questions raised by the visiting Prime Minister of LPDR and members of the delegation. The visiting Prime Minister of LPDR and members of the goodwill delegation visited the plantations in the zone. They observed vegetables and fruits and seeds in display. The entrepreneurs presented fruits to the visiting Prime Minister of LPDR. The Prime Minister of LPDR and wife and members of the goodwill delegation visited Taing Myan Kyaw Poultry Farm of Yangon Command. The visiting Prime Minister of LPDR and wife and members of the delegation went to Nyaunghnapin Village Basic Education Middle School, where they were welcomed by Deputy Minister Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Director-General of No 3 Basic Education Department (Yangon City) U Tin Win, Headmaster U San Mya, teachers and students.

The visiting Prime Minister of LPDR and Madame Khammeung Vorachith and members of the goodwill delegation observed teaching at the school. They were conducted round by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and officials. Officials replied to the questions raised by the visiting Prime Minister of LPDR. The visiting Prime Minister of LPDR and party went to Shwe Wa Tun Hall of City Plantation of YCDC and Recreation Camp in Uto-Kya-in region. The visiting Prime Minister of LPDR and party were welcomed by Mayor U Ko Lay and wife Daw Khin Khin, Secretary of YCDC Col Myint Aung and members. Mayor U Ko Lay reported on areas and locations of nine camps, implementation of the tasks for 12,000-acre Uto-Kya-in regions, cultivation of paddy, vegetables and fruits beans and pulses, breeding of fish, investment, income and tasks for extended production.

The visiting Prime Minister of LPDR and party visited the fishing breeding pond, YCDC's paddy, vegetables and fruits research centre. General Manager Dr Min Aung reported on the function of the centre. They observed various divisions and quality control laboratory. Mayor U Ko Lay and wife Daw Khin Khin hosted a luncheon in honour of the visiting Prime Minister of LPDR and party at Club House. The visiting Prime Minister of LPDR and the Mayor played golf. Mayor U Ko Lay presented gifts to the visiting Prime Minister of LPDR and party. The visiting Prime Minister of LPDR and party left there.

Secretary-1 inspects all-round construction work on Mindhamma Hill

Yangon, 20 Aug- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials, this morning arrived at Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image is kept. On arrival there, the Secretary-1 was welcomed by Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, the deputy ministers, officials, scholars and members of the pagoda board of trustees. The Secretary-1 and party paid homage to the Image. Then, the Secretary-1 selected the design for the ceiling and inspected construction of Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi in which the Image is kept, northern and southern stairways, Mindhamma Hill Garden and all-round tasks. The officials reported on construction work. The Secretary-1 gave instructions and left there at 8 am.

Yangon, 20 Aug- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Minister of Education Dr Hussein Kamel Bahaa El-Din of the Arab Republic of Egypt at the Guest House of the Ministry of Defence Services here at 4 pm today. Also present at the call were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet, Charge d' Affaires ai of Egypt Mrs Ghada Kassem Essa.

Secretary-1 attends meeting of Myanmar National Olympic Council

Yangon, 20 Aug- Myanmar National Olympic Council held Meeting No 4/2001 in the Ruby Hall of the National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thingangyun Township this evening. Chairman of Myanmar National Olympic Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the meeting.

Also present were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of MNOC, the ministers, the deputy ministers, members of Myanmar Olympic Council, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the director-general of the Sports and Physical Education Department and officials, presidents of Myanmar sports federations, officials and guests. Secretary of MNOC Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint reported on preparations for the participation of Myanmar sports team in the XXI SEA Games such as the establishment of contact with the Organizing Leading Committee of Malaysia, the sending of list of 271 athletes  173 men and 98 women  who will participate in 24 sports events, the sending of Myanma athletes abroad for training, the holding of international invitation competitions, arrangements for Myanmar sports team to go to Malaysia, improvement of the athletes and prospects of Myanmar sports contingents.

Then, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe reported on arrangements to send Myanmar sports team to Malaysia. Next, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung reported on arrangements to send the information group to Malaysia and the transmission of programmes from Myanma Television. The presidents of Myanmar sports federations and officials took part in the discussions. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 said that it is found that arrangements have been made to send Myanmar sports team to the XXI SEA Games. An over-400-member Myanmar sports team is to be sent to take part in 24 sports events in the XXI SEA Games.

It is found that the present sports team has outnumbered the previous sports team sent to the XXI SEA Games. More promising athletes are sent with the aim of winning more medals at international sports competitions. Therefore, all the members of Myanmar sports team are required to adopt the attitude that they are sent on missions assigned by the State. Athletes, coaches and managers are required to make efforts in unity and harmony to achieve success. So, coaches and managers need to cooperate in promoting quality of the athletes, bolstering their morale and coaching athletes systematically. Morale is of vital importance to win the games, and encouragement is to be given to athletes. In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged the athletes, coaches and managers to strive to win medals for the state with unbending spirit.

( 3 ) Wife of Prime Minister of LPDR and party visit Myanma Gems Museum and MMCWA head office

Yangon, 20 Aug- Madame Khammeung Vorachith, wife of Prime Minister of Lao People's Democratic Republic and party who are here on a goodwill visit at the invitation of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing visited Myanma Gems Museum of Myanma Gems Enterprise on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this afternoon.

Madame Khammeung Vorachit and party were accompanied by Daw Khin Myo Oo, wife of Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Daw Khin Swe Soe, wife of Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Daw Htwe Yi, wife of Myanmar Ambassador to LPDR U Sein Win Aung, Daw Saw Mya, wife of Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet, and Mrs Onekeo Bounkham, wife of Ambassador of LPDR to Myanmar Mr Ly Bounkham. On arrival at the museum at 3.30 pm, Madame Kham-meung Vorachith and party were welcomed by Daw San San, wife of Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo and wife Daw Khin Thet Tin and officials. Officials conducted Madame Khammeung Vorachith and party around the museum.

Then, Madame Kham-meung Vorachith signed in the visitors' book. Later, Daw San San, wife of Minister for Mines presented gifts to Madame Kham-meung Vorachith. Afterwards, Madame Khammeung Vorachith and party proceeded to multi-purpose building of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association at the corner of Parami Road and Thanthuma Road in South Okkalapa Township. They were welcomed there by Chairperson of MMCWA Prof Dr Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and executive committee members. First, Prof Dr Daw Kyu Kyu Swe briefed on the association and its endeavours for health, education and social welfare.

Then, a discussion on matters related to maternal and child welfare between the two countries. Then, the guests and the hosts posed for documentary photos. Chairperson Prof Dr Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented gifts to Madame Kham-meung Vorachith and party. Then, Madame Khammeung Vorachith signed in the visitors' book. Madame Khammeung Vorachith and party then viewed the photos showing the activities of MMCWA. Madame Khammeung Vorachith donated cash for the association and left there in the evening.

Seminar on promoting cooperative exports held

Yangon, 20 Aug- A ceremony to open the seminar on promoting cooperative exports was held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Cooperatives this afternoon. It was attended by Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Director-General of the Cooperative Department Col Soe Win, Director-General of the Cottage Industries Department U Sein Than, Managing Director of the Cooperative Export and Import Enterprise Daw Khin Swe Soe, officials, principals of Cooperative Degree Colleges and representatives. The minister spoke on the occasion. A total of 64 representatives  33 from Cooperative Departments in States and Divisions and 31 from cooperative societies are attending the five-day seminar.

Energy Minister attends opening of LPG Handling and Safety Training Course

Yangon, 20 Aug- Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi attended the opening ceremony of the LPG Handling and Safety Training Course No 13 held at the Training School of No 1 Oil Refinery (Thanlyin) this morning. Also present on the occasion were Deputy Ministers U Tin Tun and Brig-Gen Thein Aung, departmental heads, course instructors, trainees and officials. Altogether 18 trainees form the Myanma Petrochemical Enterprise are attending the four-week course.

CPT Minister inspects communication services

Yangon, 20 Aug- Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, accompanied by officials from Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, inspected communication services in Yangon Division, Bago (West) Division and Ayeyawady Division on 18 August. The minister inspected Hmawby and Taikkyi township Post and Telegraph Offices, Hmawby and Taikkyi Auto Exchanges and Taikkyi Microwave Station in Yangon Division. After giving instructions there, the minister proceeded to Thayawady, Minhla, Zigon, Paungde, and Imma microwave stations and post and telegraph offices in Bago (West) Division and gave instructions. The minister also inspected the microwave station in Pyay and heard the reports of the division manager at the hall of the Division Manager's Office in Pyay. Yesterday, the minister arrived at Sinde microwave station and inspected machinery there. Then he inspected post and telegraph offices in Kyangin and Myanaung. Afterwards, the minister inspected Hinthada auto exchange, post office and microwave station, and post offices in Zalun, Danubyu and Nyaungdon in Ayeyawady Division.

18th work coord meeting of justices of Supreme Court and judges

Yangon, 20 Aug- The 18th work coordination meeting of justices of the Supreme Court and judges of states, divisions and districts took place at the Supreme Court this morning. Also present were the Chief Justice, the deputy chief justices, justices of the Supreme Court, directors, advisers, judges of states, divisions and districts, deputy directors and the head of the Office. Chief Justice U Aung Toe made a speech. Deputy Chief Justice U Than Oo and U Khin Maung Latt made speeches. The director-general of the Supreme Court (Yangon) and the director-general of the Supreme Court (Mandalay) discussed measures taken for the reports presented at the 17th meeting. Then, a general round of discussions on judicial affairs followed.

Attorney-General meets with State/Division law officers

Yangon, 20 Aug- The 19th coordination meeting of the Attorney-General and State/Division law officers was held at the Attorney-General's Office this morning. Present at the meeting were Attorney-General U Tha Tun, Deputy Attorney-General U Khin Maung Aye, Director-General of the Attorney-General's Office Dr Tun Shin, Deputy Director-General U Han Shein, directors, State/Division law officers, deputy directors, district law officers and the head of office. The Attorney-General delivered a speech on the occasion. Then, State/Division law officers read out the reports, followed by a general round of discussions. The meeting continues tomorrow.

English Proficiency and Modern Fire-fighting Course No 2 opens

Yangon, 20 Aug- English Proficiency and Modern Fire-fighting Course No 2 of the Fire Services Department under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement was opened at the training hall of the Fire Fighting Training School in Mayangon Township this morning with an address by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa. Also present were Deputy Minister U Hlaing Win, directors-general of the departments under the ministry, the deputy director-general of the FSD, officials, course instructors and trainees. Twenty-four graduate officers are attending the course, which continues till 29 September.

( 6 MWVO provides cash assistance to war veterans in Kayah State

Yangon, 20 Aug- The Central Organizing Committee of Myanmar War Veterans Organization presented cash assistance to war veterans aged 75 and above, disabled war veterans and outstanding students who are children of war veterans at the City Hall in Loikaw yesterday.

Vice-Chairman of the Central Organizing Committee of Myanmar War Veterans Organization In-Charge of Kayah State WVO Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, member of the Central Organizing Committee Director-General of the Population Department Col Tin Yee, Chairman of the Supervisory Committee for Kayah State WVO Chairman of Kayah State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Nyunt Hlaing, Chairman of the Supervisory Committee for Loikaw District WVO Chairman of Loikaw District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Tun, members of township USDAs, social organizations and invited guests attended the ceremony. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Chairman of Supervisory Committee for the Kayah State WVO Brig-Gen Nyunt Hlaing made addresses on the occasion. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Chairman Brig-Gen Nyunt Hlaing and Director-General Col Tin Yee presented K 1.85 million to war veterans of aged over 75 and above, disabled war veterans and outstanding students.

MWVO provides cash assistance to war veterans in Shan State (South)

Yangon, 20 Aug- A ceremony to present cash assistance for war veterans aged 75 and above and disabled war veterans by the Myanmar War Veterans Organization Central Organizing Committee was held at the City Hall in Taunggyi at noon on 18 August, with an address by Patron of the Shan State (South) War Veterans Organization Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo.

Also present on the occasion were Vice-Chairman of Myanmar War Veterans Organization Central Organizing Committee Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, member Director-General of Population Department Col Tin Yee, state level departmental officials, chairmen and executives of Supervisory Committees for state/district USDAs, senior officials from the command, members of state/district/township USDAs, Women's Affairs Work Committee, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Myanmar Red Cross Society, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, members of WVO and outstanding students. Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo and Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun made speeches on the occasion, and presented K 11.65 million to 10 disabled war veterans and eight war veterans aged 75 and above, three outstanding students who are children of members of the organization and 17 township WVOs. On behalf of the war veterans and students, members of Taunggyi Township War Veterans Organization Lt-Col Tint Shein (Retd) spoke words of thanks.

( 7Bangladeshi delegates call on Chief of Armed Forces Training, visit National Defence College

Yangon, 20 Aug- A Bangladeshi excursion delegation comprising trainees and course instructors of the Armed Forces War Course 2001 of the National Defence College of Bangladesh paid a courtesy call on Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint at the Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning.

Also present were Principal of the National Defence College Maj-Gen Moe Hein, Director of Military Training Brig-Gen Aung Kyi, senior military officers and Military Attache of Bangladesh Brig-Gen Salim Akhter. Afterwards, the guests were conducted around the museum by Director of Defence Services Museum and Historial Research Institute Col Ye Htut. The guests then called on Commandant of the National Defence College Maj-Gen Moe Hein at the college. The Commandant extended greetings to the guests and briefed them on the college with the help of slides. Officials from the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development briefed them on facts about the respective ministries. The Commandant and the leader of the visiting delegation exchanged gifts. The guests looked around the college and left there.

Study group of National Defence College of Indonesia arrives

Yangon, 20 Aug- A study group led by Vice-Admiral Si Putu Ardana of National Defence College of Indonesia arrived here this morning. The group was welcomed at the airport by officials of the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Military Attache of Indonesian Embassy Col Amiruddin Lisman. The study group leader Vice-Admiral Si Putu Ardana and members met Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win at Wungyi Padethayaza Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Present were the directors-general of departments under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the deputy directors-general and officials. Members of the study group visited the National Museum on Pyay Road and they were conducted round by officials of the Department of Cultural Institute. Vice-Admiral Si Putu Ardana signed in the visitors' book.

( 8 Egyptian minister visits universities, schools

Yangon, 20 Aug- The Egyptian education study delegation led by Minister of Education of the Arab Republic of Egypt Dr Hussein Kamel Bahaa EI-Din, currently on a goodwill visit here, together with officials, visited Yangon University of Foreign Languages this morning. There the visiting minister and Rector of the University Dr Soe Win discussed matters related to bilateral educational cooperation. The visiting minister and party then visited Yangon University, Physics Department of the University. Afterwards, they proceeded to Basic Education High School of the Institute of Education (Yangon) and observed the multimedia teaching centre of the school. They later headed for No 1 BEHS in Dagon Township. Headmaster of the school U Kyaw Kyaw presented souvenirs to the visiting minister.

Conclusion of tourist guide course to be held

Yangon, 20 Aug- The results of Tourist Guide Course (Basic) No 1/2001 organized by the Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services under the supervision of the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism were announced at the training school at No 40 on Bo Son Pat Street here. The concluding ceremony will be held at the Karaweik Palace at 9.30 am on 28 August.

( 9Advanced Course on Detection of Narcotic Drugs opens

Yangon, 20 Aug- Opening ceremony of Advanced Course on Detection of Narcotic Drugs sponsored by the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control and United Nations Drug Control Programme was held at the Sofital Hotel here this morning. The course was conducted under the drug abuse control project and collection and exchange of information and uplift of efficiency project among law enforcement groups being implemented in accord with the MoU singed by six countries.

It was attended by, member of CCDAC Head of Department of the Office of the Strategic Studies Col Kyaw Thein, General Staff Officer (Grade-I) Lt-Col Min Lwin of Directorate of Defence Services Intelligence, Joint-Secretary of CCDAC Police Col Kham Aung, Commander Col San Maung of Criminal Investigation Department, Resident Representative of UNDCP Mr Jewan-Luc Lemahieu, Mr Cedric Netto of AFP Office and Mr John Whalen of DEA of the US Embassy. On behalf of CCDAC Joint-Secretary Police Col Kham Aung made a speech. Course instructor Mr Mark Dinnison of AFP of Australian Police also spoke. Altogether 25 trainees of Directorate of Defence Services Intelligence, Customs Department and Myanmar Police Force are attending the course which will continue till 24 August.

Entries invited for marching and military songs competition

Yangon, 20 Aug- Marching and Military Songs Competition Organizing Sub-committee under Poem and Arts Competition Organizing Committee will hold a marching and military songs competition in commemoration of the 57th Anniversary of Armed Forces Day which falls on 27 March 2002. The songs are to be composed in accordance with the 12 objectives of the State, the objectives of the 57th Anniversary of Armed Forces Day and the 12 fine traditions of the Tatmadaw.

The marching song competition is open to all. There are two divisions for the military songs competition Ñ level-1 and level-2. Composers and vocalists who are at the level-1 are not allowed to enter the level-2 competition. The first, second and third winners of previous level-2 competitions are allowed to enter only the level-1 competition. Only one song composed individually or in groups is allowed for the competition. The marching songs are to be composed in accordance with the styles and systems of marching songs. They are to be in Myanmar style. The duration of all the marching and military songs are to be from four to six minutes. Only one song is to be recorded on one cassette tape or reel. The title of the song can be given appropriately. The brief biography of the competitor and three colour passport-size photos, 2 inches x 2 1/2 inches, are to be sent together with the entry. If the entry is tentatively selected, the competitor will be informed. The first, second, third and special prizes will be presented to winners. The entry is to be sent to U Ko Ko Htwe, Secretary of Armed Forces Day Marching and Military Songs Organizing Sub-committee, Myanma Radio and Television, Pyay Road, not later than 31 December 2002.

Selected Myanmar amateur golfers leave for S'pore

Yangon, 20 Aug- Selected Myanmar amateur golfers Zaw Zaw Latt, Zaw Zin Win and Nanda Kyaw who are under training for the XXI SEA Games left for Singapore to partake in the 54th Singapore Open Amateur Championship 2001 to be held at the Seletar Country Club in Singapore yesterday morning. They were seen off at the airport by Secretary of the Myanmar Golf Federation U Aung Kyi, executive U Ko Ko Lay and families. The Myanmar golfers will also take part in the XXI SEA Games to be held after the championship. The Myanmar Brewery Ltd sponsored the golfers.
