(1) General Maung Aye receives Japanese military attaches

 YANGON, 5 July-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye receives Defence Attach' of  Japan Col Hirofumi Yasa, who has completed tour of duties in Myanmar, and new Defence Attach' Col  Hideaki Kitahara at the guest house of the Ministry of Defence at 8.30 am today. Also present at the call  were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office of the Strategic Studies  Director of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt and Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min.

(2) Pitaka treatises worth K 423m presented to Buddhist institutions

YANGON, 5 July - International Dhammagiri Vipassana Association of Mumbai, India, presented treatises of tri-Pitaka worth K 423 million to Pariyatti Sasana Universities, sarthintaiks, libraries and religious associations this afternoon. Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen.  Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony which was held at Wizaya Mingala Dhamma Thabin Hall, Kaba Aye,  Yangon.

Also present were Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee led by Secretary of the Committee Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Bhaddanta  Kumara, the ministers, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office,  heads of departments, world's Buddhist vipassana instructor Maha Saddhamma Jotika-dhaja U Goenka,  members of the International Dhammagiri Vipassana Association and departmental personnel. U Thein  Aung of the International Dhammagiri Vipassana Association explained the purpose of the donation.

The Secretary-1 and party and donors presented offertories to the Sayadaws. U Goenka presented the  treatises to the Secretary-1 who handed the books over to Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin.  The congregation shared the merits gained. The treatises included three volumes of Sutta treatises, three  volumes of Pannasa treatises, three volumes on the five collections of Buddhist canons, three volumes of  Inguttara treatises, five volumes of Viniya treatises, 12 volumes of Abhidhamma treatises, 11 volumes of  Koddaka Nikaya treatise and seven volumes of Jatakatha Kahta treatise worth K 423 million.

(3) Secretary-1 inspects finishing touches at Mindhamma Hill

YANGON, 5 July-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt arrived at  Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township, where the Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni image is kept, at 5  p.m. today.

The Secretary-1 was welcomed there by Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister  Brig-Gen. Thura Aung Ko, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Nyi Hla Nge, responsible  officials, experts and members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees.

After paying homage to the image, the Secretary-1 inspected the finishing touches and heard the reports  by the officials and experts. Then, the Secretary-1 inspected the progress of Gandhakuti Kyaungdawgyi.  The officials reported on all-round construction tasks of the hill with the use of charts and models to the  Secretary-1.

Then, the Secretary-1 inspected completion of 108 features of Buddha's foot-print on quartz confirmed by  the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and heard the reports by Stone Sculptor Siri Sudhamma  Manijotadhara U Taw Taw. He also inspected completion of retaining wall, southern stairways and  installation of Myanmar handicrafts and digging of Mingala Lake at the south of the hill with the use of  the machinery. He gave instructions and inspected Dakkhinasakha Maha Bodhi young plant and left there  at 6 p.m.

(4) Foreign Affairs Minister receives Indian guests

YANGON, 5 July-Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung received Mr Amiya Gooptu of Bengal Initiative Group, Calcutta, India, and party, who are on a goodwill visit in Myanmar, at his office here  this afternoon. Also present on the occasion were the directors-general and deputy directors-general from  the ministry.

YANGON, 5 July-Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Tin Winn received Ambassador of Australia  Mr Trevor David Wilson at his office in the Pyithu Hluttaw Office compound here at 4 p.m. today.

MAI passenger jets make maiden flights

YANGON, 5 July - Two new aircraft of Myanmar Airways International, Air Bus 321 and Boeing 737-300, made maiden flights to Bangkok and Singapore this morning. The Boeing 737-300 left the airport  for Bangkok at about 7.30 am and the Air Bus 321, for Singapore at 8 am.

Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and Director of MAI Mr George Yin Soon formally  commissioned the planes into service at the airport.

Also present at the ceremony were Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Minister  for Transport Brig-Gen. Kyaw Myint, heads of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of  Transport, the chairman of MAI, members of the board of directors, staff and guests.

Wives of Ambassadors and UN resident representatives visit Drug Elimination Museum

YANGON, 5 July-Led by Daw San Yon, wife of the minister for Foreign Affairs, Daw Khin Swe Soe,  wife of the deputy minister, and Daw Saw Mya and wife of the director-general of the Protocol  Department, wives of Ambassadors of foreign embassies in Yangon and resident representatives of UN  agencies visited the Drug Elimination Museum at the corner of Hanthawady and Kyundaw roads, here,  today. They were conducted round the museum by Director of Central Committee for Drugs Abuse  Control Police Col Sit Aye and officials.

(5) Dinner hosted for successful opening of Drug Elimination Museum

YANGON, 5 July-Honouring the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Chairman of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing hosted a dinner to those who rendered assistance for the successful opening of Drug Elimination Museum  on 26 June at the management hall of the museum at 7 p.m. today.

It was attended by Vice-Chairman of CCDAC Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister at the  Prime Minister's Office U Tin Winn and members, Director-General of the State Peace and Development  Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein and departmental heads, Secretary of CCDAC Director-General of  Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and officials of the work committees, members of the  museum construction committee and museum exhibition committee and guests. At the ceremony, CCDAC  Chairman Minister Col Tin Hlaing spoke words of honour to those who rendered assistance for successful  opening of the museum and hosted the dinner to all those present.

Medical treatment given to nuns and children

YANGON, 5 July  -A group comprising executives led by Leading Patron of the Women Chapter of  Myanmar Medical Association (Yangon) Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe gave medical treatment and presented  stationery and medicines to nuns of Daw Dhammesi Nunnery in Mayangon Township, here, this morning.

They then headed for Day Nursery of Maternal and Child Welfare Association of the Ministry of Industry-2 where they were welcomed by Patron of the Association wife of the minister for Industry-2 Daw Moe  Moe Myint and executives. Dr Khin Mar Aye presented medical equipment donated by the Women  Chapter and Dr Daw Beauty Kyi of EAC (Dumex), milk powder and gifts by EAC (Dumex) to the  Nursery through Patron Daw Moe Moe Myint who presented certificates of honour. Afterwards, Patron  Daw Moe Moe Myint presented gifts to Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare  Association (Central) Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and guests. Later, the specialists of the Women Chapter  gave medical checks to the children and infants and also medical treatment. Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and  guests viewed taking care of the children and infants at the Nursery.

Mayor inspects poultry farms

YANGON, 5 July - Yangon City Development Committee Chairman Mayor U Ko Lay accompanied by officials arrived at Aung Mingala Poultry Farm and Htaukkyant Poultry Farm of YCDC in Mingaladon Township and inspected the farms yesterday afternoon. The Mayor heard the reports on raising of 25,000 fowls and arrangements for raising of 50,000 fowls by officials. After leaving instructions there, the Mayor proceeded to Htaukkyant Poultry Farm where officials reported on raising of over 100,000 chicken and production of eggs, growing of flowers and vegetables in the farm. He gave instructions on preventive measures against diseases, setting up a committee-owned factory for mixing of feedstuff, distributing of clean and fresh feedstuff at reasonable prices to the camps under the committee, and minimizing of  production costs and wastage.

(6) Diesel Multiple Unit (301) train undergoes test run

YANGON, 5 July - Diesel Multiple Unit (301) train left Mandalay Railway Station on 3 July on a test run between Mandalay and Yangon. Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung and officials oversaw the test run of the 500-seater train. Specially designed for ensuring convenient commuter transport services during the rush hours in the cities, it was built at Ywahtaung Workshop by mechanical and electrical engineers and staff of Myanma Railways. The Ywahtaung and Pazundaung workshops of Myanma Railways will continue to build Diesel Multiple Unit (301) trains for Yangon city circular and other commuter services.

Commander attends opening of anti-AIDS billboard in Mandalay Division

YANGON, 5 July-The opening ceremony of anti-AIDS billboard created by youth members of Mandalay Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association was held in front of Yadanabon Market in Chanaye Thazan Township, Mandalay on 3 July. Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint and departmental officials attended the ceremony.

Then, the commander attended four-monthly coordination meeting of Mandalay Division Police Force at Aung San Hall of Mandalay Division Police Commander's Office and gave instructions on community peace and prevalence of law and order, crime reduction and cooperation with the people in nation- building tasks. The meeting was attended by commanders of Mandalay, PyinOoLwin, Meikhtila, Myingyan, Nyaung-U, Kyaukse and Yamethin District Police Forces and Mandalay Division Police Commander Police Col Hla Myo laid down the future plans.

Later, the commander addressed the ceremony to mark Myanmar Women's Day organized by Mandalay Division Working Committee for Women's Affairs at the National Theatre in Aungmye Thazan Township. Next, the commander presented prizes to the winners in painting contest to mark World Health Day 2001 and the outstanding-performance award winners of Chanaye Thazan and Kyaukse Township Maternal and Child Welfare Associations.

Afterwards, the Mayor of Mandalay and the Secretary of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council presented prizes to those who won awards in education, sports, Fire Brigade and Red Cross activities. Member of the Working Committee Dr Daw Tin Lin Myint presented K 1.2 million donated by well-wishers for the evening schools of women's affairs to the chairpersons of the district working committees for women's affairs, and accepted K 300,000 donated by Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council for the Working Committee. Chairman of Mandalay Division Working Committee for Women's Affairs U Kyin Lin accepted the cash donations and the meeting ended. The commander then inspected the Mandalay General Hospital.

(7) Commander inspects industrial zone in Kachin State

YANGON, 5 July-Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win met with district/township-level departmental officials, chairmen of ward/village-tract peace and development councils, officials of social organisations and towns elders in Kachin State at the City Hall in Myitkyina on 29 June morning. The commander gave instructions on agricultural, education, health and social development.

In meeting with industrialists at Industrial Ward near Tatkon Village in Myitkyina in the evening, the commander heard a report presented by Secretary of Myitkyina District Peace and Development Council Major Than Htay on the work being carried out in the ward. The commander gave instructions to the industrialists and attended to their needs. Afterwards, the commander together with officials, inspected the work being carried out for the industrialists, welding, painting, production of spare parts and industrial tools at the industrial zone.

Commander attends opening of Kokeshi Dolls Exhibition, inspects Plywood Factory

YANGON, 5 July-Member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West
Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, accompanied by Deputy Commander Brig-Gen. Tint Swe, attended the opening of Kokeshi Wooden Dolls Exhibition, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Japan Foundation, Embassy of Japan under the cultural exchange programme, at the Cultural Museum in Pathein on 4 July morning.

It was also attended by senior military officers, officials from the Division Peace and Development Council, departmental officials and invited guests. The commander delivered a speech and an official of the Japanese Embassy explained the purpose of opening of the exhibition. Then, the commander and the official formally opened the exhibition. All those present viewed the display of the exhibition. Afterwards, the commander inspected Winthuza Shop of the Ministry of Industry-1 in Pathein and met with the staff in the afternoon. After giving instructions there, he proceeded to No 4 Plywood Factory of Myanma Timber Enterprise. He gave instructions on meeting the production target, matters related to the shop of Staff Welfare Committee and inspected the factory. Later, he heard reports on production process by the officials at the briefing hall of Pathein Glass Factory, and attended to the needs and inspected the worksite.

(8) Myanmar Women's Day observed in Loikaw

YANGON, 5 July-Myanmar Women's Day sponsored by Kayah State Women's Affairs Working Committee was observed at the city hall in Loikaw Township on 3 July. Present were Chairman of Kayah State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen. Nyunt Hlaing, members of State, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, members of Kayah State Working Committee for Women's Affairs, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Associations, departmental officials, commanding officers of regiments and units and their wives, members of social associations, teachers and students. Chairman of the Working Committee U Sein Thin and Secretary of Sub-group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation Daw Khin May Oo reported on tasks for women's affairs. Patron of Kayah State Women's Affairs Working Committee Daw Nan Aye San presented prizes to outstanding women from Kayah State.

Cash donated to Taninthayi Division WCWA

YANGON, 5 July-Under the sponsorship of Taninthayi Division Working Committee for Women's Affairs, cash and prize presentation ceremony to mark Myanmar Women's Day was held at the Pale Yadana Hall in Myeik on 3 July. Present at the ceremony were Chairman of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Coastal Region Command Brig-Gen. Aye Kyway and wife Daw Khin Khin Win, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen. Tin Latt, members of the Working Committee, commanders of stations and battalions and their wives, departmental officials, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association and social organizations and guests. The commander delivered an opening speech. Chairman of Division WCWA U Than Aye explained the purpose of holding the ceremony and presenting gifts to outstanding women.

Then, eight companies in the Division presented K 295,000 to Division WCWA through the commander's  wife and the commissioner of Division General Administration Department who presented certificates of honour to the wellwishers. Afterwards, the commander presented gifts to the gold medal winner in the eighth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competition; the commander's wife to the first prize winner in poetry competition to mark the Armed Forces Day and the deputy commander and officials to the outstanding girl students and women in matriculation exam (2000 academic year) and skill contests.

(9)  Drug trafficker sentenced to 25 years

YANGON, 5 July - A drug trafficker was sentenced to separately serve a five-year prison term and another 20-year term on drug charges in Taunggyi on 30 April this year. The trafficker, Chit Tee (a) Hla Myint, was caught together with 489.9 grams of marijuana, 16.33 grams of opium and four grams of opium residue when the authorities searched his house on 13 October last year. The authorities, the members of a local intelligence unit and anti-drug squad, were acting on a tip- off when they found the drugs in his possession at the house located on Kyaunggyi Street at Ward 2, Aungban Township. Police of  Aungban took action against the 55-year-old drug trafficker under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotrophic Substances Law.
