(1) Secretary-1 inspects arrangements for opening Drug Elimination Museum

YANGON, 15 June- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt  inspected progress of construction work and arrangements for opening of Drug Elimination Museum at  the corner of Kyundaw Street and Hanthawady Street in Kamayut Township this evening. Accompanied  by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt arrived  at the construction site of Drug Elimination Museum at 6 p.m.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council  Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than, the ministers, the deputy ministers, chairmen of various committees of the museum and officials. First, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt inspected progress of construction work, display, documentary photos, paintings and booths of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control on the ground and first floors, displays of work committees, Myanmar Anti-Narcotics Association and Border Development Association on the second floor of the museum. Then, the Secretary-1 gave instructions to officials and left there.

(2) Contract signed for construction of Salingyi Textile Factory Project

YANGON, 15 June-The Myanma Textile Industries of the Ministry of Industry-1 and China National  Constructional & Agricultural Machinery Import & Export Corporation (CAMC) of the People's Republic  of China signed a contract for implementation of the Salingyi Textile Factory Project at Sedona Hotel on  Kaba Aye Pagoda Road yesterday evening.

Present at the ceremony were Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen.
Thein Tun and Brig-Gen. Kyaw Win, directors-general and managing directors of departments and
industries under the ministry, Ambassador of PRC Mr Li Jinjun, Economic and Commercial Counsellor Mr Jin Honggen, Vice-President of CAMC Mr Su Weike, Chief Representative Ms Luo Yan and party  and guests. Managing Director of MTI U Oo Thein Maung explained facts about the project. Then,  Managing Director U Oo Thein Maung and Mr Su Weike signed the contract and exchanged the  documents. Mr Su Weike spoke words of thanks, and the ceremony came to a close.

(3) Minister U Aung Thaung meets foreign guests

YANGON, 15 June- Minister for Indurtry-1 U Aung Thaung met General Manager Mr Toshihide Orita  and party of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) of Singapore at his office yesterday  afternoon and General Manager Mr Sun Ping and party of China Exim Bank of the People's Republic of  China together with Economic Counsellor Mr Jin Honggen of the PRC Embassy at 9 am today. Also  present at the calls were Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen. Thein Tun and Brig-Gen. Kyaw Win, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry.

Transport Minister receives Chinese guests

YANGON, 15 June- Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe received Deputy General Manager  Mr Zhou Zhongyi and party of China Aviation Industry Group Company of the People's Republic of  China at his office yesterday evening. Also present at the call were Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen. Kyaw  Myint and U Pe Than and Director-General Col Nyan Tun Aung of the Transport Department.

Minister U Saw Tun meets Ambassador of India 

YANGON, 15 June- Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun met Ambassador of India Mr  Shyam Saran at his office this morning. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister U Maung Aung and  officials.
 
Thai PM to pay official visit to Myanmar 

YANGON, 16 June-At the invitation of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime  Minister of the Union of Myanmar His Excellency Senior General Than Shwe, His Excellency Dr Thaksin  Shinawatra, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand will pay an official visit to the Union of  Myanmar in the near future.

(4)  Minister visits Nursery Market Festival

YANGON, 15 June - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by
departmental officials, visited the Nursery Market Festival at Kandawgyi Myaypadetha Park in Bahan  Township this morning. The minister inspected the purchase of saplings worth K 3 million to be grown in  Buthidaung and Maungtaw for the development of Rakhine State by the residential office of FAO.  Afterwards, the minister inspected the sale of garden crops, vegetables, fruits, mushrooms and orchids. He  also inspected the vegetable greenhouse, sale of herbal plants and research plantations. The officials  reported on matters related to agricultural work. The minister gave instructions. The minister also  inspected Garden Crop Shop No 2 where fruits, foodstuff, consumer goods and flowers were on sale.

Minister attends conclusion of Basic Management Course 

YANGON, 15 June- The concluding ceremony of Basic Management Course No 4/2000 was held at  Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading at the corner of Merchant Street and Pansodan Street here this  morning. Present were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Kyaw Hsan, Director-General of Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye, Director-General of Border  Trade Department U Nay Win, Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Min Hla  Aung, officials, course instructors and trainees. Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone made a  speech. Next, Minister Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone presented prizes to outstanding trainees of the course.

Ministry of Rail Transportation holds co-ord meeting 

YANGON, 15 June- The Ministry of Rail Transportation held the first four-monthly coordination meeting  at the hall of the ministry this morning, with an address by Minister U Pan Aung. Also present on the  occasion were Deputy Ministers Thura U Thaung Lwin and U Pe Than, advisers, directors-general and  managing directors of departments and enterprises, those in charge of divisions and officials. The minister  gave an address.

He said that those in charge of divisions are to report weak and strong points in carrying out tasks of the  ministry; as the ministry has laid down a work policy, officials of respective divisions must draw work  plans systematically and manage to assign duty to employees; preparatory tasks are to be carried out  annually for prevention measures of natural disasters; and he stressed the need to undertake development  tasks of human resources and turn out qualified service personnel. The officials reported on  implementation of projects in their respective sectors. Later, the minister and the deputy ministers gave  necessary instructions.

(5) Work coord meeting of Construction Ministry held

YANGON, 15 June-The first four-monthly work coordination meeting for the Year 2001 of the Ministry  of Construction was held at the meeting hall of Public Works (Head Office) on Shwedagon Pagoda Road  at 10.30 am today with an address by Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun. Also present were  Deputy Ministers U Tint Swe and Brig-Gen. Myint Thein, Managing Director of PW U Nay Soe Naing,  Director-General of Human Settlement and Housing Development U Ant Kyaw, Director-General U Soe  Tint of Construction Inspection Department, departmental heads, superintending engineers, deputy  superintending engineers and officials. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun stressed the need of officials to  conduct field tours and supervise work at the grassroots level, to minimize loss and wastage, to train  service personnel to be well-versed and disciplined and to constantly inspect roads and bridges for  durability.

NPED Ministry holds first four-monthly meeting

YANGON, 15 July-The first four-monthly work coordination meeting for Year 2001 of the Ministry of  National Planning and Economic Development was held at the meeting hall of the National Archives  Department on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Street this morning, with an address by Minister for National  Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha.

Also present on the occasion were directors-general of departments under the ministry, deputy directors- general, directors, deputy directors, planning officers of states, divisions and districts and officials. Speaking on the occasion, Minister U Soe Tha stressed the need to fulfil the objectives of this year after  reviewing advantages and disadvantages and work performance of last year; in this regard, the four  objectives of the ministry are to be used as norms in assessing work performance. Some states and  divisions which could not make full efforts last year for the development of State economy are to thoroughly assess causes and to make concerted efforts at the beginning of this year, and to pay heed to correct figures in presenting reports on economic development. Then, the directors-general of departments  concerned presented work being carried out for 2000-2001 department-wise and progress of work during  the first four months for Year 2001. The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the minister.

(6) Cash assistance provided to children of staff

YANGON, 15 June- A ceremony to present cash assistance for students of staff families of the Ministry of  Immigration and Population was held at the Population Department on Maha Bandoola Road this  morning, attended by Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun. Also present were Deputy  Minister U Maung Aung, Director-General of Immigration and National Registration Department Col  Maung Htay, Director-General of Population Department Col Tin Yi, the deputy directors-general, the  directors and staff families. Minister U Saw Tun delivered a speech. Minister U Saw Tun and Deputy Minister U Maung Aung presented cash to officials for 637 students. Two persons from the staff families spoke words of thanks.

Minister inspects Yangon East Auto-exchange

YANGON,15 June- Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen. Thein Zaw arrived at the construction site of the new office of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications in Ahlon Township this morning. At the briefing hall, officials of MPT reported on construction work, the director of Myanma Industrial Construction Services on the blue print of the office and progress of work to the minister.

The minister attended to their needs and inspected construction of building. Then, Minister Brig-Gen. Thein Zaw arrived at computer section of MPT. Officials reported matters relating to formation of staff,  function and production of telephone bill to the minister. The Chief-Engineer of Yangon Auto-Telephone  explained the location of Yangon East auto-exchange, formation of staff and installation of exchange  equipment to the minister. Minister Brig-Gen. Thein Zaw inspected production of telephone bill,  installation of telephone equipment and work.

(7) Health staff urged to implement projects with added momentum

YANGON, 15 June - The Ministry of Health held the first four-monthly meeting at Medical Research  Department (Lower Myanmar) this morning, with an address by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.  Also present at the meeting were Deputy Ministers Prof. Dr Mya Oo and Prof. Dr Kyaw Myint, directors-general, deputy directors-general, rectors, directors, deputy directors, heads of State/Division Health Department Offices, medical superintendents and officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein said it is required to effectively implement the projects laid down by the State, to conduct rural health care undertakings with greater momentum and to  apply thrifty methods. More health teams which include specialist physicians will visit the people in rural  areas. Deputy Minister Prof. Dr Mya Oo explained human development programmes for progress of the  rural areas, and Deputy Minister Prof. Dr Kyaw Myint urged the health staff to discharge their duty with  goodwill. The heads of departments then reported to the meeting on sector-wise implementations. A  general round of discussions then followed. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister.

MMB explains modern banking services in Mandalay

YANGON, 15 June- The briefing on modern banking services of Myanmar May Flower Bank Ltd to entrepreneurs in Mandalay City was held at Oriental House at the corner of 64th and 27th Streets in  Chanayethazan Township on 13 June. Present on the occasion were Secretary of Mandalay Division Peace  and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Ohn, District Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Tin Tun, MMB Chief Executive Officer U Aik Htein, Executive Director U Win Naing, Managing  Director U Khin Maung, officials and guests. Chief Executive Officer U Aik Htein explained policy of the bank, development of the bank, monetary matters and investment with the use of audio-visual and slides. Managing Director U Khin Maung also explained matters related to modern banking services of MMB and service of bank branches. Then, the CEO and the managing director answered the queries. After the briefing, those present were served with the dinner, and CEO U Win Naing presented souvenirs to them.

(8) Auditor-General's Office holds first four-monthly co-ord meeting

YANGON, 15 June - The first four-monthly meeting and the State/Division officers of the Auditor-
General's Office was held at the Office this morning, with an address by Auditor-General Brig-Gen. Tin Aye. Also present were Deputy Auditor-General U Khin Win, Director-General of the Auditor-General's Office Daw Thin Thin, the deputy director-general, directors, deputy directors, heads of State/Division Accounts Offices and others. Auditor-General Brig-Gen. Tin Aye urged the staff to take part in nation-building tasks with higher acceleration, to strive to implement the projects and to reduce expenditure. State/Division account officers then presented the accomplishments of their sectors, staff strength, staff welfare programmes, building of staff quarters, progress in realizing the resolutions of the previous meeting and the work plan for fiscal 2001-2002. The Auditor-General, the Deputy Auditor-General, the director-general and officials gave suggestions. Then, Auditor-General Brig-Gen. Tin Aye gave the concluding remarks.

Hotel management course concludes

YANGON, 15 June- The hotel management course, organized by Directorate of Hotels and Tourism and Byoke Kandawgyi Hotel Co. Ltd, concluded at Kandawgyi Palace Hotel on Kanyeiktha Road in Mingala Taungnyunt Township this morning. Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen. Aye Myint Kyu gave a speech. Then, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Aye Myint Kyu and Director-General of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism U Khin Maung Latt and officials presented certificates for the junior hotel management course and the basic hotel service course to trainees. A total of 20 trainees attended the junior hotel management course, 34 at the receptionist course, 22 at the hotel roomkeeper course, 32 at the beverage course and 77 at the beverage production course. More junior hotel management courses will soon be opened.

(9) Mayor inspects agricultural and livestock breeding works in Uto-kya-in region

YANGON, 15 June-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor of Yangon City U Ko Lay,  together with officials, inspected agricultural and livestock breeding project in Uto-kya-in Region, Taikkyi  Township, this morning. The Yangon City Mayor inspected cultivation of monsoon paddy and perennial  lime plants along the Uto-Kya-in road as well as cultivation of various kitchen crops with green house system.

The Mayor gave instructions on weeding in the patches and constant sale of vegetables at tax-free
markets and markets in Yangon. Mayor U Ko Lay then arrived at the paddy drying plant in the project  and left instructions on supervision for drying paddy in time, minimum wastage and systematic use of  paddy husk and broken rice. Afterwards, Mayor U Ko Lay inspected production at Paddy Husk Briquette  Factory of Myanma Machine Tool and Electrical Industries of the Ministry of Industry-2, and gave  instructions. Later, YCDC Chairman Yangon City Mayor U Ko Lay went to Oil Mill and left instructions on sale of edible oil and use of groundnut expeller cakes as feedstuff.

2001-Myanmar Sports Medicine Course concludes

YANGON, 15 June-A ceremony to conclude 2001-Myanmar Sports Medicine Course of IOC Medical Commission was held at the Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel at 4 p.m. today, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen. Thura Aye Myint.

Also present were Secretary of Myanmar Olympic Committee and Director-General U Thaung Htaik of Sports and Physical Education Department and officials, officers of Directorate of Medical Services, the Ministry of Defence, officials of Medical Commission of International Olympic Committee, rectors, professors, medical experts and guests. First, the minister made a speech. Then, member of Medical Commission of IOC Professor Keun Youl Kim of the Republic of Korea gave a speech. Afterwards, the minister presented completion certificates to the trainees. One trainee each from Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam, eight trainees from eight sports federations and 16 trainees of Sports and Physical Education Committees of States and Divisions attended the course.
