(1) Senior General Than Shwe sends message of congratulations to Nepalese King

YANGON, 10 June-His Excellency Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and
Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of congratulations to His Majesty  King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev on His Majesty's ascension to the Throne of the Kingdom of  Nepal.

(2) National Health Committee holds 32nd meeting

YANGON, 10 June- The 32nd meeting of the National Health Committee was held in the meeting hall of  the committee at the office of the Ministry of Health in Dagon Township this morning, attended by  Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen. Khin Nyunt.

Also present were the ministers, members of the National Health Committee, the deputy ministers, the vice-mayor, the director-general of the State Peace and Developments Council Office, heads of departments and officials. The Secretary-1 said that the population of the Union of Myanmar has reached 50 million, and the task of providing health care for the people has become greater and more extensive.  Extensive and effective measures are being taken to ensure that public health care is provided in rural areas and border and far-flung areas which lagged behind in development.

The Secretary-1 said that while giving the guidance on accelerating the implementation of development  tasks for rural areas, Head of State Senior General Than Shwe stressed the importance of improvement of  transport in rural areas, availability of clean and hygienic drinking water and water for agriculture and  improvement of the standard of education, health and economy of the people living in rural areas. Therefore, arrangements are to be made to ensure that public health care is improving and becoming effective according to the time and circumstances.

Now, the rainy season has set in, and systematic measures are to be taken to prevent such diseases as malaria, diarrhoea, dengue hemorrhagic fever which are very common in the rainy season. In accord with the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, potent medicines for malaria, tuberculosis, hypertension, diabetes, diarrhoea and dysentery are to be produced and used extensively.

In addition, the Central Food and Drug Administration Board is required to examine the quality of medicines and to make sure that prices of medicines are reasonable. Systematic supervision is to be provided to make sure that national entrepreneurs can produce western medicines in the country.

Now, Myanma traditional medicines are highly efficacious, and they are being used extensively not only  in rural areas but also in urban areas. It is found that production of traditional medicines has become  extensive. As much as traditional medicines are produced and used, it is required to make sure that these  medicines are free from harmful effects and highly efficacious. At the same time, encouragement is to be  given to production of traditional medicines, and measures are to be taken to ensure that traditional  medicines are of international standard and can compete with western medicines.

Myanmar traditional medicine practitioners conference is to be held regularly in order to preserve and  promote traditional medicine. Arrangements are to be made to produce doctors and nurses, especially for  the areas where doctors and nurses are in great demand, with the aim of providing effective treatment at  hospitals and reducing medical expenses for the poor and needy. Secretary of the National Health  Committee Director-General of the Health Planning Department Dr Kyi Soe reported on implementation  of the resolutions made at the 31st meeting of the committee. Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and  Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa reported on establishment of the centres for women care.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein reported on the healthy human resources development programme  covered by the national education promotion special four-year plan being implemented in accord with the  guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe. Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Kyaw  Myint reported on the drawing of the Myanma health vision. Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr  Mya Oo reported on the opening of postgraduate courses.

Then, Director-General of Medical Science Department Professor Dr Maung Maung Wint reported on  the sending of scholars abroad for further studies. Director-General of the Medical Research Department  (Lower Myanmar) Professor Dr Paing Soe reported on the conducting of research on herbal plants for  malaria, tuberculosis, hypertension, diabetes, diarrhoea and dysentery.

Director-General of the Health Planning Department Dr Kyi Soe reported on the drawing of the rural  health development plan (2001-2006) in accord with the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than  Shwe. Then, a general round of discussions followed. Dr Kyi Soe declared the approval of 12 decisions  made by the 32nd meeting of the National Health Committee. In replying to the reports, the Secretary-1  said that attention is to be paid to implementation of the decisions made at the present meeting.

It is necessary to systematically implement the national health plans, the national education promotion  special four-year plan (the health sector) and the plans for the health sector. To provide health care for the  people in rural areas, the participation and cooperation of social organizations, the people and  international organizations is of paramount important. Therefore, all the responsible personnel are to organize the people and social organizations to participate in the task of providing public health care.

Not only the Ministry of Health alone but also other ministries, the people and social organizations are  responsible for the task of uplifting the standard of health and fitness of the entire people, and all the  ministries and departments are to work unitedly with national awareness. After the meeting, the Secretary-1 and party observed traditional medicines displayed by the pharmacists cooperative  society Ltd  and private traditional medicine producers.

(3) Secretary-1 inspects construction of Myanmar Information and Communications Technology (MICT) Park and Bagan Cybertech building

YANGON, 10 June-Chairman of Myanmar Computer Science Development Committee Secretary-1 of the  State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt inspected construction of Myanmar  Information and Communications Technology (MICT) Park and Bagan Cybertech building in Hline  Township this evening.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council  Office, arrived at the office of MICT Park Construction Project at 4.45 p.m.

They were welcomed by Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Communications, Posts and  Telegraphs Brig-Gen. Thein Zaw, the deputy ministers and officials of Myanmar Computer Federation,  Myanmar Computer Scientists Association, Myanmar Computer Industry Association. State Peace and  Development Council Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt was briefed on progress of work and tasks to be  undertaken by U Aung Zaw Myint and U Pyone Maung Maung of MICT Park Construction Committee.

The Secretary-1 then gave instructions. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt inspected construction of MICT  Park and Bagan Cybertech building. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt gave necessary instructions and left  the construction site in the evening.

Secretary-1 inspects display of exhibits at Drug Elimination Museum

YANGON, 10 June-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt  inspected completion of Drug Elimination Museum and preparations for display of exhibits at the museum  at the corner of Kyundaw Road and Hanthawady Road in Kamayut Township this evening. The Secretary- 1, together with officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the mu seum at 3  p.m.

They were welcomed by ministers, deputy ministers, chairmen of Committee for Construction of Drug  Elimination Museum, Committee for Display of Exhibits and Work Committee and officials. The  Secretary-1 inspected paintings and dummies in the booths and documentary photos arranged by the  Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control on the ground and first floors, booths on the second floor and  exhibits of Myanmar Anti-Narcotics Association and Border Areas Development Association. The  Secretary-1 inspected land preparation in front of the facade of the museum and gave instructions.

(4)    Secretary-1 attends closing of Dhammacariya Course of Aungmyebodhi Dhammayeiktha Alodawpyi  Kyaungtaik in Tamway Township

YANGON, 10 June-The closing ceremony of the third Summer Dhammacariya Course of Aungmyebodhi  Dhammayeiktha Alodawpyi Kyaungtaik on Pinshwe-nyaung Street, Tamwaylay Ward, Tamway  Township, was held at the Kyaungtaik this afternoon. Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development  Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony and presented books and stationery to the trainees.

Also present were Presiding Nayaka of the Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Agga Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja  Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Ariyavamsa, course instructor Sayadaw Bhaddanta  Sucittabhivamsa and Sayadaws, trainee members of the Sangha, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung  Khin, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, officials of  the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, departmental personnel, wellwishers and trainee  nuns. The Secretary-1 and party paid obeisance to the Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw. They then presented  books and stationery to the trainees. A total of 1,249 members of the Sangha and 350 nuns attended the  course which began on 27 April.

(5)  UMFCCI Official leaves for Japan

YANGON, 10 June-CEC member of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce &  Industry U Sein Win Hlaing left for Japan to attend the AMEICC Training Programme for Organizers at  Centres at Excellence (AMOG) to be held from 11 to 15 June in Japan yesterday evening. Secretary- General U Zaw Min Win and officials saw him off at the airport.

NPE adviser arrives back

YANGON, 10 June-Adviser to News and Periodicals Enterprise, Ministry of Information, U Myat Thu  (Takkatho Myat Thu) arrived back here by air yesterday after attending the Seventh International  Conference on West Asia Affairs held in Tokyo, Japan, from 7 to 8 June. The adviser was welcomed back  at Yangon International Airport by Director (News) of NPE U Hla Tun, officials and family members.

Myanmar delegation leaves for PRC

YANGON, 9 June-At the invitation of Yunnan Medical Group, Marketing Inc of the People's Republic of  China, a nine-member delegation led by Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce &  Industry Joint-Secretary Myanmar Medicine and Medical Equipment Entrepreneurs Association  Chairman Dr Maung Maung Lay left for China this morning to visit medical factories in Kunming  Shanghai and Beijing and to attend the Kunming Trade Fair 2001.

They were seen off at the airport by UMFCCI President U Win Myint, Secretary-General U Zaw Min Win  and Vice-Chairman of MMMEEA U Nyunt Tin, Secretary Dr Saw Hla Tun and others.

(6) Tipitakadhara Dhamma Bandagarika Title recipient Sayadaw honoured

YANGON, 10 June-Under the sponsorship of Yesagyo Township Association (Yangon), a ceremony to  honour Tipitakadhara Dhamma Bandagarika Title recipient Yesagyo Sayadaw Ashin
Vayamindabhivamsa was held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Association and a ceremony  to present prizes to those outstanding in their studies at Myatheindan Kyaungtaik in Pazundaung  Township, here, this morning, attended by member of the State Peace and Development Council  Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than.

Also present were Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru  Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara and members of the  Sangha, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Forestry  Col Thaik Tun, Commander of No 4 Military Region Commandant of Defence Services Records Office  Brig-Gen. Myo Myint and executives and members of the Association. The Magway Sayadaw  administered the Five Precepts. Chairman of the Association U Ko supplicated on the purpose of holding  the ceremony. Executive of the Association U Tun Aung Kyaw read out the title recipient Sayadaw's  biography. The commander, the deputy ministers and members of Panel of Patrons of the Association  presented offertories to the members of the Sangha. Then, Yesagyo Sayadaw Tipitakadhara Dhamma  Bhandagarika Ashin Vayamindabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained. Later, the annual meeting and prize presentation ceremony followed.

(7)  Wan Chai knocks out Doug Evans

YANGON, 10 June-Myanma traditional boxing challenge and Myanmar -Australia European Boxing  Turn-up continued for the second day at National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna at 2.30 pm toady.  Among the spectators were Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa,  Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman Minister for  Sports Brig-Gen. Thura Aye Myint, Yangon Command Deputy Commander Brig-Gen. Hsan Hsint and  fans. In the Myanmar-Australia European Boxing Turn-up, Tun Tun Oo of Myanmar beat Nathan  Croucher of Australia. Officials presented prizes to the winners. Then, matches of international and  Myanma traditional boxing challenge were held. World golden belt champion Doug Evans was beaten by  Myanma traditional boxer Wan Chai in the first-round knockout. Minister for Sports Brig-Gen. Thura  Aye Myint presented a golden belt to Wan Chai.

Roads and bridges inspected

YANGON, 10 June-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, together with officials, arrived at 37- mile construction site on Yangon-Pyay Highway where Deputy Superintending Engineer U Soe Nyunt of  Road Construction Special Group-15 and officials reported on maintenance of the highway on 6 June  morning. After leaving necessary instructions there, the minister and party inspected Pyay-Okshippin- Taungup Road and Taungup-Ma-ei Road.

The minister said the roads linking the delta and Rakhine State are very important and road sections and  bridges on the roads are to be constructed in accord with the set target. The Taungup-Ma-ei Road is to be  built under the supervision of officials from Road Construction Special Group-8 so that it can be  serviceable in this rainy season. He heard the reports on work done and future plans presented by  Superintending Engineer U Thein Kyaw of Rakhine State and Deputy Superintending Engineer U Tin  Htut. He then arrived at the construction site of Tanhlwe Bridge on Taungup-Ma-ei Road. Deputy   Superintending Engineer of the project U Soe Myint and officials reported on construction of the approach  road and piers to the minister who then gave instructions on timely completion of the bridge. Afterwards,  the minister proceeded to the construction site of Lamu Creek Bridge on Taungup-Ma-ei Road. He  inspected the site and gave necessary instructions there. He then arrived at Ma-ei Bridge.

He said that reinforced concrete frames are to be used in building the bridge and the officials are to
supervise it according to the instructions. He headed for Kyaukgyipauk Bridge on Ma-ei-Kyaukpyu Road  by boat and attended to the requirements for drinking water and the site. Later, he inspected the  construction site of Sanepauk Bridge on Ma-ei-Kyaukpyu road where Project Engineer U Saw Myint Kyi  reported work done and future tasks.

The minister said it is a main bridge on the road and to be constructed to meet the standard of other
bridges on the road. The minister and party No 8/1 mile post road section and heard the reports on future  plan and work done on construction of the road using Geotextile System by Deputy Superintending  Engineer U Soe Tint of Road Construction Special Group-2 and officials. The minister said as the system  is to be used in Myanmar for the first time, officials are to carry out the tasks according to the instructions.  He then inspected the site and left there.
 
Minister inspects Mandalay International Airport

YANGON, 10 June-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe accompanied by departmental  officials inspected the six-lane entrance road and bridges to the Mandalay International Airport yesterday.  The minister also inspected construction of staff quarters and the combined office. Officials reported the  minister on work. The minister attended to the needs.

(8)  Minister inspects communication work

YANGON, 10 June-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen. Thein Zaw inspected  communication work at Overseas Communication Station of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications in  Mayangon Township yesterday. At the meeting hall, officials reported to the minister on work. Then, the  minister inspected communication devices, telephone exchanges and auto-radio telephone and microwave  rooms. The minister gave necessary instructions.

Taninthayi Division Inter-Township Soccer Tourney concludes

YANGON, 10 June-The final match and prize presentation ceremony of Year 2001 Taninthayi Division  Peace and Development Council Chairman's Trophy Under-21 Inter-Township Soccer Tournament were  held at Myoma Sports Ground in Myeik on 8 June afternoon. Among the spectators were Division Peace  and Development Council Chairman Coastal Region Command Commander Brig-Gen. Aye Kyway,  senior military officers, Division Peace and Development Council Secretary Lt-Col Khin Maung Nyo,  departmental officials and members of social organisations. In the final match, Myeik Township Team  beat Dawei Township 3-2. Then, prizes were presented to the winners and the championship shield to  Myeik Township Team.

(9)  Agricultural works and Soon Creek Dam inspected

YANGON, 10 June-Magway Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Col Zaw Min together  with officials concerned visited Magyeekan village in Magway Township and inspected the cultivation of  crops and gave necessary instructions. Thence, the Chairman and party proceeded to construction site of  Soon Creek Dam and inspected progress of work. The dam will be able to store 30,000 acre-ft of water  and irrigate 7,000 acres of crop land.
