(1) Secretary-1 inspects river-water pumping projects, agriculture work and restoration of ancient pagodas

YANGON,  28 May - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt left here by Tatmadaw aircraft yesterday morning and arrived at NyaungU, Mandalay Division, at 8.15 am.

The Secretary-1 was accompanied by the ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), the deputy ministers, Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Zaw Min, heads of departments and the State Peace and Development Council Office.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed at Bagan-NyaungU Airport by member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Brig-Gen Than Tun of Kyaukpadaung Station and departmental officials.

Later, the Secretary-1 and party inspected Ngathayauk River-Water Pumping Project being implemented near Ohnnechaung Village in NyaungU Township.

In his report, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung said that altogether 66 river-water pumping projects have been implemented in Mandalay Division, and these projects are irrigating 37,584 acres of cultivable land. Another 16 river-water pumping projects are being implemented in Mandalay Division, and on completion of these projects, over 37,000 acres of land can be irrigated.

Director-General of Water Resources Utilization Department U Win Shwe reported on the implementation of Ngathayauk River-Water Pumping Project, the type of water pumps to be used at the project and targeted irrigated acres of land.Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint reported on assistance to be provided for supply of water for agriculture.

The Secretary-1 attended to requirements. The Secretary-1 and party inspected the site chosen for Ngathalauk River-Water Pumping Project. Then, they went to Letpanchepaw River-Water Pumping Project in Letpan-chepaw region, NyaungU Township.

The Secretary-1 inspected cultivation of summer paddy, cotton and sesamum with the use of river water.

In his report, Director-General U Win Shwe said that Letpanchepaw River-Water Pumping Project started in 1995-96, and now the project has been completed. Cultivation can be done on 1,500 acres of land all the year round with the use of river water. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Khin Maung reported on cultivation of crops in Letpanchepaw region.The commander gave a supplementary report.

Next, the Secretary-1 met with local people of Letpanchepaw village. The local people reported on the condition of cultivation work before and after the implementation of the project and education and health requirements of the village.

After attending to their needs, the Secretary-1 said that for the greening of the arid Bagan-NyaungU region, river-water pumping projects are being implemented with the use of large sums of money. On completion of these projects, crops and trees can be grown and the region will become lush and green.

By making the best use of river-water pumping projects, efforts are to be made to improve the standard of living of farmers. The farmers are also to grow not only crops which can augment their income but also crops which can benefit the State.

The Secretary-1 urged departmental officials to strive for the completion of the river-water pumping projects step by step and to make arrangements for the storage of water.

Then, Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented medicines for the rural health centre through Chairman of Letpanchepaw Village-tract Peace and Development Council U Win Maung, and attended to the requirements for the opening of the multimedia teaching centre at the basic education school.

Later, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the water-pumping station of Letpanchepaw River-Water Pumping Project. The Secretary-1 and party went to model experimental agricultural farm of Hon Pan Co on the east bank of Ayeyawady River near Bagan-Chauk motor road in NyaungU Township. At the briefing hall, farm in-charge U Hla Moe reported on cultivation of watermelon, cucumber and grape and preparation for cultivation of durian and pomelo. General Manager U Li Khan Min of Hon Pan Co and farm manager U Kyaw Naing reported on power
supply and communications for the model farm and agricultural tasks to be undertaken. The Secretary-1 gave instructions on cultivation of crops in the arid zone and distribution of strains and cultivation methods to local farmers.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected water melon and mangoes of model experimental agricultural farm of Hon Pan Co and experimental cultivation of grape. The Secretary-1 and party went to the site of Lawka Nanda water pumping project in NyaungU Township. At the briefing hall, Director-General U Win Shwe reported on Lawka Nanda water pumping project and condition of irrigated cultivation. Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin reported on measures undertaken for supply of drinking
water for Bagan-NyaungU Township. Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint gave a supplementary report. The Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions and inspected the site for Lawka Nanda water pumping project.

Lawka Nanda water pumping project to be implemented near Lawka Nanda Swedaw Pagoda can supply water to 11,000 acres of land in NyaungU Township all the year round. The Secretary-1 and party went to Pagoda No 1202 Apeyadana Pagoda built by King Kyansittha and paid obeisance to Buddha image. The Secretary-1 and party inspected preservation of wall paintings in Apeyadana Pagoda.

Deputy Director-General of Department of Archa-eology (Upper Myanmar) U Aung Kyaing reported on work. The Secretary-1 and party went to Bagan Hsinbyushin Kyaungtaik and inspected preservation and decoration of Hsinbyushin Pagoda, lake, ordination hall and wall. Minister for Culture U Win Sein reported on preservation of ancient Bagan Hsinbyushin Kyaungtaik. Deputy Director of Department of Archaeology (Upper Myanmar) U Myo Nyunt reported on records about Bagan Hsinbyushin Kyaungtaik, preservation of the kyaungtaik and restoration of Bagan pagodas and pagodas on hills.

The Secretary-1 then gave instructions. The Secretary-1 and party went to NyaungU District People's Hospital where they were welcomed by Chairman of NyaunU District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Oo, Medical Superintendent Dr Myo Than, specialists and staff. Medical Superintendent Dr Myo Than reported on constructed buildings, common diseases in the region and treatment. Deputy Minister Professor Dr Mya Oo gave a supplementary report. The Secretary-1 then gave necessary instructions and inspected operation theatre and wards.

The Secretary-1 and party visited Dhammarajaka Pagoda. The Secretary-1 presented donations to the Pagoda Board of Trustees. This morning, the Secretary-1 and party attended a collective ordination and novitiation ceremony held at Aungmye Bodhi Dhamma Yeiktha Alodawpyi Kyaungtaik in NyaungU Township. Thirty-six men and 315 boys from 11 wards and 52 villages in NyaungU Township were ordained and novitiated respectively. Families of Defence Ser-vices Intelligence and Central Command presented offertories to newly-ordained monks and members of the Sangha.

(2) Secretary-3 inspects preparation for holding Myanmar War Veteran Organization Conference

YANGON, 28 May-Chairman of Central Organizing Committee of the Myanmar War Veteran Organization Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, accompanied by members of the Central Organizing Committee Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt and Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, and senior military officers, this afternoon arrived at the Hsinphyushin Hall of Defence Services Orthopaedic and Reconstructive Surgery Hospital (500-bed) in Mingaladon Township, at which the conference will be held.

The Secretary-3 was welcomed there by Vice-Chairman of the Central Organizing Committee Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, member Secretary of Leading Committee for Holding the Conference Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, members of the Central Organizing Committee Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, member of the Central Organizing Committee member of Decoration Sub-committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary of the Central Organizing
Committee Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Joint-Secretary Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo and officials.

The Secretary-3 inspected preparation for holding the Conference Sub-committee wise and sale centres being opened by Ministries, and was conducted round them by the officials. Then, the Secretary-3 attended the coordination meeting on holding the Conference at the same venue. Officials of the Sub-committees reported on work done and future tasks. Afterwards, theSecretary-3 gave necessary instructions, and left the hall in the evening.

(3) Myanmar protests against malicious writings in Thai media

YANGON, 28 May-The Thai media has been carrying out a vicious campaign to denigrate Myanmar and it has been found that lately the malicious attacks have reached new heights with articles aimed at destroying national unity, tarnishing the image of the country and the government, inciting instability and unrest and even making suggestions on matters that should not even be contemplated. Therefore, the Director-General of the Political Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, U Thaung Tun delivered an Aide Memoir protesting in the strongest terms the malicious articles in the Thai press to the Thai Charge d’ Affairs ai in Yangon Mr Raden Suwannakorn at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this evening.

The Aide Memoir stated that the article, "Tactics to Counter Myanmar" by Tairat Suthorn Paraphart that appeared in the 18th May 2001 issue of the Thai language newspaper, "Daily News" and the article, "Dangerous Escalations" by Surathjinakul that appeared in the Bangkok Post on 20th May 2001 exceed the bounds of decency and are aimed at creating misconceptions about Myanmar in the mind of the Thai public. If such a campaign is allowed to continue unabated, it could adversely affect the relations between Myanmar and Thailand.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs protested to Thailand in the strongest terms the malicious attacks on the Government and the leaders of Myanmar, it is learnt.

(4) 30th meeting of BOD of ACU held

YANGON, 28 May-The opening ceremony of the 30th Meeting of Board of Directors of Asian Clearing Union (ACU) hosted by Myanmar was held at the Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road here at 9 am today.It was attended by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, ambassadors of member countries of ACU to Myanmar, Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, chairmen and members of delegates of central banks of member countries - Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India and Iran, general secretary and members of ACU, director of Economic andSocialCommission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP), observers; officials of ASEAN Secretariat and monetary authority of Maldives, directors-general and managing directors of Ministry of Finance and Revenue, chairmen of local private banks and guests.

Minister U Khin Maung Thein delivered a speech. He said; Asian Clearing Union was set up in 1974 and Myanmar became a member in 1977. Since then, with might and main, Myanmar has been taking part in cooperation among member countries in trade and monetary matters that is an objective of ACU. Countries in South Asia have been endeavouring for the development of agriculture and industry sectors with the use of information technology in parallel with international countries. Moreover, they are making concerted efforts unitedly for development economy in the region. In the meeting, matters related to tasks among member countries are to be discussed in line with the objectives of the union. Member countries are to cooperate in trade and monetary matterswith greater momentum for development of economy in the region.

Then, ministers, chairmen of central banks of member countries of ACU and leaders of delegations posed for documentary photographs before the ceremony came to an end.Afterwards, work coordination meeting of ACU was held at Min Don hall of the hotel. Governor of Central Bank
of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung presided over the meeting. Chairmen of central banks and delegates of eight member countries took part in discussion.

Members of ACU are Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India and Iran. The head office of ACU is opened at the Central Bank in Tehran, Iran and daily routine are performed. ACU was set up with the objectives of promotion of cooperation among member nations in trade and monetary matters, saving foreign currency in trade and other payments among member countries and supporting matter related to ordinary payments. There are many advantages in trade as a result of cooperation among the member countries in matters related to monetary including payments and clearing of accounts.

Meeting of BOD of ACU is held in member countries yearly by turns. It was held in Myanmar in 1987 and 1994. This is the third time for Myanmar to host the meeting.
 
Entries invited for short story, article, song, poem, cartoon, painting and poster competitions

YANGON, 28 May - The Crime Reduction, Education and Information Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs invites entries for the short story, article, song, poem, cartoon, painting and poster competitions marking the fifth anniversary of the committee.

The entries are to be composed artistically in accord with the mottoes laid down by the committee.
There is only an open division for the short story and article competitions. Words for bothcompetitions are between 3,000 to 5,000.

For the song competition, there is an open division. The song can be sung individually or in groups. Only a song is allowed for the competition. The tape on which the entry song is to be recorded, is to be sent together with musical notes and two copies of lyrics.

For the open division of the poem competition, the entry poem is to have from 50 to 100 lines. The cartoon, painting and poster competitions are put into four divisions  under 10 years, from 10 to 15 years, from 15 to 20 years and above 20 years.

The size for the cartoon is 15" x 20"; that for the painting is 15" x 20"; that for the poster is 20" x 30". A person can send one entry for each competition. To be attached to the entry are the entrant’s two passport size photos, name, pen- name, National Registration Card Number, address, brief biography and his statement that the entry is not printed in any publications. Entries are to be sent to Police Col Win Kyi, Chairman of Information Subcommittee, Office of Yangon Division Police Command, Bank Road (corner of Strand Road and Sule Pagoda Road) during office hours by 31 July 2001. The entry for song competition is to be sent to the same address by 30 August 2001.

The first, second and third prize winning entries will be announced on 1 October.

(5) Minister visits factories

YANGON, 28 May-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, together with Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thein Tun and departmental officials, arrived at Leather Factory of Myanma General and Maintenance Industries on Insein Road in Hline Township this morning.

The minister inspected the production line, finishing process and raw materials at the factory and gave instructions.The minister inspected various kinds of rubber slippers, leather wares, bags, shoes, gloves, chemicals and raw materials in the briefing hall. He then gave instructions on boosting production, invention of new products, quality control and dissemination of techniques to new generation youths at the briefing hall.The minister proceeded to No 1 Shoe Factory of MGMI on Insein Road in Mayangon Township and inspected production of tyre compound and boots and warehouses, and gave instructions to the officials.

Fourth seminar on Myanmar-Japan economic cooperation begins

YANGON, 28 May - The fourth seminar on Myanmar-Japan economic cooperation was opened at the International Business Centre here this afternoon.

The seminar is aimed at promoting opportunities and prospects for wider economic cooperation between Myanmar and Japan, encouraging Japanese entrepreneurs to make more investment in Myanmar and conducting technical and training programmes for development of human resources.

Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman’s Office Brig-Gen Abel made an opening speech.Chairman of Keidanren of Japan Mr Iwao Toriumi and Japanese Ambassador Mr Shigeru Tsumori also spoke on the occasion. Also present were Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board Dr Than Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Myint Thein, Deputy Minister for Energy U Tin Tun, Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung, officials of departments concerned, members of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Japanese entrepreneurs. The seminar will continue tomorrow.

(6) Minister inspects road and bridge construction in Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 28 May-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, together with Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint Thein and officials of Public Works, inspected construction of roads and bridges in Ayeyawady Division yesterday morning.

The minister inspected Yangon-Pathein Road, Mau-bin-Hsamalauk Road and Maubin Bridge, and gave instructions on maintenance of the bridge.

Then, he inspected Maubin-Kyaiklat Road. He arrived at Ayeyawady River Bridge (Dedaye) Construction Project in the afternoon. At the briefing hall on Kungyangon bank, Deputy Chief Engineer U Khin Maung Win reported to the minister on progress of putting up piles of approach bridge and main bridge and future tasks.

The minister gave instructions on worksite safety, constant construction laying out plans and systematic use of construction materials and heavy machinery. He attended to the needs and inspected progress of the construction. The Ayeyawady River Bridge (Dedaye) is being built on Yangon-Dalla-Kanbe-Kawhmu-Kungyangon-Dedaye-Pyapon Road near Ingapu. Lower structure of the bridge and approach bridge are reinforce concrete and main bridge is steel frame. Total length of the bridge is 4,088 feet long and it has a 28-foot-long motorway and two six-foot-wide pedestrian lanes on both sides. It has a clearance of 390 feet length and 36 feet width and it can
withstand 60-ton load.
 
MNWCWA presents cash for schoolchildren

YANGON, 28 May-Hailing the school enrolment week activities for school-age children, Myanmar National Working Committee for Women’s Affairs presented cash for school children atthe Social Welfare Department in Mayangon Township this morning.

Present were Vice-Chairperson of MNWCWA Professor Daw May May Yi, Advisers Daw Khin Than Nwe and Daw Khin Cho Oo, members of MNWCWA, and others.

Professor Daw May May Yi spoke on the occasion. Daw Khin Than Nwe, wife of Lt-Gen Tin Oo, and Daw Khin Cho Oo, wife of Lt-Gen Win Myint, presented K 100,000 each to Professor Daw May May Yi. Other well-wishers presented K 290,000 to Daw May May Yi and Daw Khin Cho Oo. Total donations for today are K 2.62 million. The donations will be provided to 262 school children.

(7) Minister supervises establishment of forests in Mandalay Division

YANGON, 28 May - Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone inspected construction of Mt Popa Garden, the upgrading of the herbal garden, the greening work of Natkanle Village east of Mt Popa and cultivation of crops and forests from 26 to 28 May. Then, the minister went to Taungtha and inspected cultivation of trees for the greening of Taungtha Hill. The minister gave instructions on the growing of trees in the watershed areas of Taungphela Hill and Myinsaing Hill in Myingyan District and the hills east of Mt Popa. Afterwards, the minister inspected Lawkananda Sanctuary on Tayun Hill in NyaungU and tasks for the establishment of forests to be carried out in the rainy season.

Deputy Minister for Education inspects school enrolment week activities

YANGON, 28 May-School enrolment week for all school-age children is being launched nationwide in cooperation with the people. Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung inspected the school enrolment activities at the Basic Education Schools in Sagaing and Mandalay Divisions from 25 to 27 May.

On 25 May, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, accompanied by Director-General of No 2 Basic Education Department (Upper Myanmar) Lt-Col Win Htain and officials, arrived at Yaychan-O Village Basic Education Primary School in PyinOoLwin Township. The deputy minister and party inspected school enrolments and presented text books and stationery to the school.

He also inspected school enrolments and presented text books and stationery to Naunglon Village BEPS and Wetwon Village BEMS. On 26 May, the deputy minister and party inspected school enrolments and presented text books and stationery to Chinzu BEPS in Sagaing Township, Ywahtaung BEPS and Soonchet Village BEMS.

On 27 May, the deputy minister, accompanied by Deputy Director-General of No 2 Basic Education Department U Khin Maung Yin and officials, inspected school enrolments at No 17 BEPS in Aungmyayethazan Pyilonchantha Ward in Mandalay, No 7 BEPS in Bondawtoe Ward and presented exercise books and pencils. The deputy minister and party inspected school enrolments at Bogon Village BEPS in Madaya Township in Mandalay Division and Kyauktada Village BEMS and presented exercise books and pencils to the schools. Meeting with local people, the deputy minister said school enrolment for all school-age children is a basic national task in implementaing national education promotion programme, and spoke of cooperation and the important role of people to achieve the objectives of long-term education project.

(8) Myanmar, Korean entrepreneurs meet

YANGON, 28 May-A coordination meeting, organized by Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), between Myan-mar entrepreneurs and Korea Sungnam City Trade Mission of Sungnam, the Republic of Korea, on mutual interest between the two countries was held at Hotel Equatorial on Alanpya Pagoda Road here today. Ambassador of the ROK Mr Chung Jung-gum, Commercial Attach' Mr Kim Jaecham, 12 entrepreneurs from six Korean companies and entrepreneurs from 39 Myanmar companies attended the meeting.

(9) Woman drug trafficker gets 12 years

YANGON, 28 May-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Lashio Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, stopped Ma Shauk San, 40, of Tapahaw Village in Namhu Village-tract, Kunlong Township on 24 December, 2000. The policewomen sear-ched and found 15 sachets each containing 200 stimulant pills bearing the letters" WY " in her underwear. The Hsenwi Township police station filed her under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Lashio District Court handed down twelve years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on her on 28 March
