(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Ethiopia

YANGON, 28 May- On the occasion of the National Day of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia which falls on 28 May 2001, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development  Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Dr Negasso  Gidada, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

(2) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Azerbaijan

YANGON, 28 May-On the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan which falls on 28  May 2001, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the  Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Heydar A Aliyev, President  at the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Indian delegation arrives

YANGON, 27 May-An Indian trainee delegation of National Defence College of  India led by Rear  Admiral RM Kshetrapal AVSM arrived here by air at 6 p.m. today on a study visit. The delegation was  welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Commandant of National Defence College Maj-Gen Moe  Hein and officials, Military Attaché Col Shakit Gurung and officials of the Indian embassy.

Health Minister addresses World Health Conference

YANGON, 27 May-A Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, who made an  address at the 54th World Health Conference held in Geneva, Switzerland, arrived back here on 25 May  evening. The delegation attended the opening of the conference on 14 May and discussed matters related  to implementation of mental health tasks in Myanmar. On 16 May, the minister made an address at the  general meeting of the WHO. At the conference, Myanmar was elected as one of 12 new executives and  the minister attended the meeting of the executive members.
 
Minister for Education inspects school  enrolment week activities

YANGON, 27 May- School enrolment week for all  school-age children is being launched for this year  in cooperation with the people. Minister for Education U Than Aung inspected the activities at basic education schools in Yangon and Bago Divisions yesterday. Minister U Than Aung arrived at Basic Education High School No 1 in Dagon Myothit (East) Township. The  minister was welcomed by the directors-general and chairmen of departments and boards,  members of Township and Ward Peace and  Development Councils, officers from regional battalions, members of Township Union Solidarity and  Development Association,  Material and Child Welfare Association and Women's Affairs Committee,  Township Education Officer, the school head, teachers and parents.

The minister and party inspected school enrolments and presented text book's and stationery donated by  the Ministry of Education to the headmaster. The minister and party also inspected school enrolments at-  No 4 Basic Education Middle School in Dagon Myothit (East) Township, Indaing Village No 2 Basic Education Primary School, Salaykwin Village Basic Education Primary School in Bago Division and  Pwesargyigon Village No 9 BEPS (Oktha Myothit). The minister, the directors-general, the principal of  Bago Degree College and wellwishers donated text books, stationery and school uniforms. Meeting with  local people, the minister said school enrolment for all school-age children is a basic national task in  implementing the national education promotion programme, and spoke of cooperation and the important  role of people to achieve the objectives of the long-term education project.

Donated cash exceeds K 184m at Mindhamma Hill

YANGON, 27 May-Mindhamma Hill, where the Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni image is kept,  was visited by members of the Sangha, novices, nuns, devotees and pilgrims from far and wide today.

Stone Sculptor Siri Sudhamma Manijotadhara U Taw Taw and sons put the finishing touches to the
image.  Engineers and workers of Public Works, continued all-round construction and decoration tasks.

Tasks are also taken for the garden at the south of the hill with the help of the machinery from Public
Works. Wut associations recited religious verses daily.  Bookshops of Ministry of Religious Affairs and  Ministry of Information are opened at the hill. Myanmar Traditional Artistes and Artisans Asiayon also  opened a souvenir shop there. Donation Centre is also opened there and donations made by the public  have amounted to K 184,868,282 from 5 August 2000 to date.

(4) Naing Ngant Gon Yi Magazine presents K 500,000 to MWJA

YANGON, 27 May-A ceremony to mark the second anniversary of Naing Ngant Gon Yi Magazine  published by Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association and to present cash to MWJA was held at  Soranto Villa building of Sarpay Beikman Printing Press on Pyay Road this morning, attended by Patron  of Naing Ngant Gon Yi Magazine Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen.  Aung Thein, the managing director and directors-general of enterprises and departments under the  Ministry of Information, Chairman of MWJA U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung), CEC members, Chief Editor of  Naing Ngant Gon Yi Magazine Lt-Col Ohn Maung (Retd) (Myinmu Maung Naing Moe), members of  editorial staff, literati and guests.

Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung spoke on the occasion. Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung) extended  greetings and Chief Editor of Naing Ngant Gon Yi Magazine Lt-Col Ohn Maung (Retd) (Myinmu Maung  Naing Moe) reported on publication of the magazine and  expressed thanks for contributors.

Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung presented gifts to literati.  Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen. Aung  Thein presented gifts to Chairman of Naing Ngant Gon Yi Magazine Publication Committee and  members and Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung) and members of editorial staff of the magazine. Chief  Editor Myinmu Maung Naing Moe presented K 500,000 for MWJA to Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko  Hsaung).

Total donation of the Naing Ngant Gon Yi Magazine to MWJA is K 2.4 million. Deputy Minister U Soe  Nyunt (Htilar Sitthu), Writers U Hla Kyaing (Paragu) and Daw Yin Yin (Saw Mon Nyin) then discucssed  literary affairs.

(5) Commander supervises sanitation work in Lashio

YANGON, 27 May- Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander of  North-East Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, together with departmental officials,  visited collective sanitation work at Lanmadaw Street and Sasana 2500 Hill in Lashio on 19 May.

Tatmadaw members, departmental personnel, members of Myanmar Police Force, Development
Committee personnel, members of social organizations and local people totalling 800 cleaned bushes and  planted shade trees for the greening of the region.

On 20 May, the commander and departmental officials arrived at the construction site of the concrete  bridge on Nannin Creek near Holi village, Kunlon Township. Officials of the Public Works reported on  work done.

The commander inspected the building of the approach road from Holi village to the bridge, and gave  necessary instructions. Then, the commander and party proceeded to No 1 Basic Education High School  and viewed the basic computer application course for teachers of Kunlon District. The commander met the  officials at the office of the school and attended to their needs.

(6) National level seminar on fishery industry held

YANGON, 27 May - The Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries held the national level seminar on fishery  industry to ensure fish and food sufficiency for millennium in the meeting hall of the Department of  Fisheries in Ahlon Township this morning. Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen. Maung Maung  Thein addressed the seminar.

Deputy Director-General of the Department of Fisheries U Hla Win spoke on the occasion.

The scholars from the Department of Fisheries discussed matters related to the marine product and
livestock breeding sector, fresh water and sea fish breeding management sector, sea fish catching sector,  marine product and marine resources conservation sector and fishery industry statistic sector.

Then, a general round of discussions followed. The seminar also discussed matters related to ASEAN- SEAFDEC Conference to be held in Thailand in November 2001. Also present were Deputy Minister for  Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, directors-general and managing directors of departments and  enterprises under the ministry, officials of Myanmar Fisheries Federation, professors and lecturers of  Yangon University, Dagon University and Mawlamyine University and entrepreneurs exceeding 180.
 
Certificates presented to 333 students in Myitkyina

YANGON, 27 May - A ceremony to present high school, middle school and primary school education completion certificates for 2000-2001 academic year was held at No 3 Basic Education High School in  Myitkyina on 21 May. Headmaster U Ba Tun explained the purpose of presenting the certificates.

He presented certificates to high school education completion certificates to 150 students, middle school  education completion certificates to 133 and primary school education completion certificates to 130.

(7) Myanmar journalist delegation back from PRC

YANGON, 27 May-Myanmar journalist delegation led by Chief Editor of Myanma Alin Daily of News  and Periodicals Enterprise of the Ministry of Information U Ye Myint Pe, arrived back here by air this  evening after 11-day study in the People’s Republic of China under the China-Myanmar cultural exchange  programme.

The delegation was welcomed back at the airport by Director (News) of NPE U Hla Tun, Deputy Chief  Editor U Tin Hlaing of Myanma Alin Daily, Manager U Nyunt Hlaing, Cultural Attaché Mrs Ren Xiuzhi  and Second Secretary Mrs Shi Yingi of PRC Embassy and families.

Members of the delegation Chief Editor Maj Kyi Min of Yadanabon Daily, Acting Chief Editor Maj Myo  Nyunt Aung of Myawady Press, Editor U Win Myint of Myanma News Agency (Internal), Editor U Hla  Oo Maung of Kyemon Daily and Editor U Tha Sein of The New Light of Myanmar also arrived back on  the same flight.

(8) Conclusion of New Generation Aviation Course held

YANGON, 27 May-The conclusion ceremony of the New Generation Aviation Course No 7/2000 of the  Union Solidarity and Development Association (Central) and Commander-in-Chief’s Office (Air) was  held at the hall of Namhsan Station on 25 May morning, with an address by Brig-Gen. Kyaw Aung of  Namhsan Station. Also present on the occasion were the commanding officers and company commanders  of the station, chairmen and members of Loilem District and Namhsan Township Peace and Development  Councils, departmental officials, course instructors and trainees.

(9) Commander inspects construction of IPRD library in Shwebo

YANGON, 27 May-Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of  North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, together with officials, inspected construction of Pyinnya Alin  modern library at the office of the Information and Public Relations Department in Shwebo on 24 May  morning. The chairman of Shwebo District Peace and Development Council and responsible persons  reported on progress of the construction, and the commander attended to the needs.

The commander then arrived at Thaphanseik Dam Project in Kanbalu Township, and inspected storage of  water and progress of construction of electric power station. He gave instructions to the officials. Afterwards, the commander and party met with chairmen of Shwebo District and Kanbalu Township  Peace and Development Councils and members of the Maha Shwesigyi Pagoda in Kanbalu at the pagoda.  The commander left instructions on future tasks for maintenance of the pagoda and greening the  surrounding areas of the pagoda. In the afternoon, the commander inspected Zigon all-round agriculture  and livestock breeding farm of North-West Command at Zigonlay Village in Shwebo. After being  conducted round the farm by officials, the commander fulfilled their requirements.
