(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to President of  Argentine Republic

YANGON, 25 May- Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the  Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Fernando De La Rua, President of the  Argentine Republic, on the National Day of Argentina which falls on 25 May 2001.

(2) Asia Wealth Bank presents K 20m to Myanmar Education Committee and National Health Committee

YANGON, 24 May - Asia Wealth Bank Limited presented K 10 million each to Myanmar Education Committee and National Health Committee at Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road here this evening.

Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt, who is the Chairman of both  Committees, accepted the donations from Vice-Chairman of AWB U Aik Tun.

He also presented a certificate of honour to the donor.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt then thanked the donor, saying that Asia Wealth Bank is always taking part in  and providing assistance to nation-building, health, education, religious and social endeavours of the State.

It can be said that AWB is conducting a noble task as the bank’s assistance to the State’s public welfare tasks  enables the State to enhance its endeavours benefiting the people.

As the State is implementing the tasks for development of the over 50 million citizens of rural, urban and border  areas of Myanmar with high acceleration, the people’s cooperation in the tasks is much required.

Head of State Senior General Than Shwe has given guidance on promoting rural development task to ensure  proportionate progress of the rural and the urban areas.

In his guidance, the Head of State stressed the need to strive for development of the five sectors, which are, to  develop rural roads; to uplift rural public health care services; to open more opportunities for the children of the  rural people to pursue education; to ensure rural water supply; and to render assistance for progress of the economy  and the living standard of the rural population.

In accord with the guidance of the Head of State, the donations made by AWB today will be effectively used for the  significant progress of the rural health and education sectors U Aik Tun also explained the purpose of the  donation. Also present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and  Development Council Office, heads of department, members of AWB board of directors and board of executives  and guests.

(3) Minister for Foreign Affairs sends felicitations to Argentina

YANGON, 25 May- U Win Aung, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of  felicitations to His Excellency Mr Adalberto Rodriguez Giavarini, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Argentine  Republic, on the National Day of Argentina which falls on 25 May 2001.

(4) Hpa-an erects billboard hailing MWVO Conference

YANGON, 24 May-A ceremony to erect a billboard hailing the Myanmar War Veteran Organization Conference  2001 was held at Bogyoke Street, Hpa-an in Kayin State this morning.

It was attended by Chairman of Supervisory Committee for Kayin State WVO Secretary of Kayin State Peace and  Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Win Maung, Chairman of Supervisory Committee for Hpa-an District WVO  Chairman of District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Soe Myint Aung, division/district/township WVOs  members, members of USDA, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Red Cross Society, MCWA, Working Committee for  Women’s Affairs and local people totalling over 500. Lt-Col Kyaw Win Maung, Lt-Col Soe Myint Aung formally  unveiled the billboard and the ceremony came to a close.
 
USDA management course opens in Dawbon

YANGON, 24 May- A ceremony to open the Executives’ Management (Multiplier) Course No 6, organized by  Dawbon Township Union Solidarity and Development Association, was held in conjunction with membership  application presentation ceremony at Dawbon Township USDA Office this morning, with addresses by USDA  Central Executive Committee members U Saw Tun and  Col Maung Pa.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary of Yangon USDA U Aye Myint, Secretary of Yangon East District  USDA U Tin Hlaing, officials, departmental heads and USDA members.

Speaking on the occasion, CEC member U Saw Tun said the training courses have been opened for increasing  number of USDA members with the aims of developing intellectual and intelligentsia, thinking and calibre of the  members; trainees should pursue knowledge and lessons lectured at the training course systematically; and USDA  members must safeguard Our Three Main National Causes as the inborn duty. Then, member of CEC in-charge of  Yangon Division Col Maung Pa gave a speech. Yangon Division USDA Secretary U Aye Myint accepted 2,354  membership applications.

Afterwards, Dawbon USDA Secretary U Than Lwin accepted K 20,000 donated by Dawbon Township Peace and  Development Council, K 5,000 by Dawbon Township Police Force, K 3,000 by Township Immigration and  National Registration Department, K 10,000 by Township Development Committee, K 5,000 by Township Court,  K 1,000 by Township Law Office, K 10,000 by Yamonna Cooperative Society, K 10,000 by Kaba Thein General  Trading and K 5,000 by Annawa Fisheries Trading.
 
New Generation Marine Course trainees visit Kyunsu

YANGON, 24 May - Seventy-five trainees of Basic New Generation Marine Course 1/2001 and Advanced New  Generation Marine Course 1/2001 visited Kyunsu Township on 19 May.

The courses are being jointly conducted by Union Solidarity and Development Association (Central) and Office of  the Commander-in-Chief (Navy) at Myeik Tatmadaw (Navy) New Generation Marine Training Centre.The  trainees were led by Maj Nyi Nyi Lwin, Capt Kyaw Khaing Win and course instructors.

On arrival at Kyunsu, they were welcomed by the commander and officers of Taninthayi Naval Region Command  Headquarters, members of Township Peace and Development Council and executives and members of Township  USDA.

Entries for ASEAN Photo Contest invited

YANGON, 24 May-Entries are invited for ASEAN Photo Contest for 2001 under four titles.  The authorities  announced that the entries are to be sent to U Than Tun, Acting Director (Production) of Information and Public  Relations Department at 22-24, Pansodan Street, Yangon not later than 31 May. As the deadline is drawing nearer,  the participants are urged to send the entries to the above-mentioned address.

(5) Love Myanmar Expo’ 2001 opens

YANGON, 24 May- A ceremony to open the Love Myanmar Expo’ 2001, sponsored by New Grace International  Exhibition Services Co. Ltd with the permission of the Ministry of Commerce, was held at Yangon Trade Centre  on Upper Pazundaung Road in Mingala Taungnyunt Township this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and  Irrigation Brig-Gen. Khin Maung, Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen. Kyaw Win, Deputy Minister for  Construction Brig-Gen. Myint Thein, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, departmental heads, guests,  members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Red  Cross Society.

Minister Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone and Managing Director U Karu Larein of New Grace Int’l Exhibition Services Co Ltd  formally opened the expo. Then, Managing Director U Karu Larein extended greetings to the guests. Afterwards,  the minister, the deputy ministers and guests viewed goods displayed at the expo. The expo opens up to 27 May  from 9 am to 9 p.m.

Malaysian Minister observes tasks of Annawa Fisheries Holdings

YANGON, 24 May- To observe economic and trading opportunities between Myanmar and Malaysia, Minister of  Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Mr Tan Sri Muhyiddin Bin Haji Mohd Yassin of Malaysia and party,  currently here, accompanied by Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Muham-mad Bin Noh and Director U Myo Win of  Directorate of Trade, went to Annawa Fisheries Holdings Ltd in Pazundaung Township this morning and observed  condition of fish and prawn markets.

Then, members of Board of Directors Dr Mya Hlaing and U Paw Inn explained catching of fish and prawn and  export matters to the visiting minister and party.  At 11 am, entrepreneurs who accompanied the Malaysian  Minister went to Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry Building. President of the  federation U Win Myint extended greetings. They discussed trade promotion and bilateral cooperation in economic  matters. In the afternoon, the Malaysian Minister and wife and party visited Myanma Gems Emporium.
 
e-English Summer Course No 1 continues

YANGON, 24 May-Under the national education promotion programme, the e-English Summer Course No 1  continues at e-Education Learning Centres in High Schools and Education Colleges today. The courses were  broadcast from the main studio of the University of Distant Education of Myanmar Education Research Bureau  from 9 am to noon except Sunday till 31 May.

The course books compiled by the English professors have been distributed to the trainees who are attending the  course at 163 e-Education Learning Centres all over the country including learning centres at No 1 BEHS,  Kyimyindine Township, No 1 BEHS, Lanmadaw Township, No 4 BEHS, Pazundaung Township and No 1 BEHS,  Pabedan Township.

(6)  Youths from Tanai Region and Nationalities Youth Resources Development Degree College novitiated

YANGON, 24 May - A ceremony to collectively novitiate youths from Tanai Region and Nationalities Youth  Resources Development Degree College, under the organization of Kachin State Peace and Development Council,  was held at Sasana Beikmandawgyi in Myitkyina on 21 and 22 May.

On 21 May, procession of 105 would-be-novices took place in Myitkyina. On 22 May, they were novitiated, and the  merit sharing ceremony was held at the same venue in the morning.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee  Presiding Sayadaw of Myitkyina Wuntho Kyaung-taik Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddham-majotika  Bhaddanta Silavamsa.

Also present were members of the Sangha, Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council  Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and wife Daw San San Yee, Commander of Myitkyina  Air Base Headquarters Brig-Gen. Bo Kyi, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen. San Tun, senior military officers,  Secretary of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myint Thein, departmental personnel, members  of social organisations, wellwishers and guests.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Silavamsa invested the congregation with the Eight Precepts. Members of the Sangha recited  parittas. The commander and wife and officials presented offertories to the members of the Sangha, followed by  sharing of merits gained. Then, the commander and wife performed rituals of golden and silver showers. After the  ceremony, the commander and wife and wellwishers offered "soon" to the members of the Sangha.

(7) Commander attends law enforcement meeting of Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 24 May- A law enforcement meeting of Ayeyawady Division was held at the office of the Division  Peace and Development Council on 19 May afternoon.

The meeting was a sector of the coordination meeting to review accomplishments of 2000-2001 and work  programmes of 2001-2002. Present at the meeting were Chairman of the Division Peace and Development Council  Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen. Tint Swe, high  ranking military officers, members of Division, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, division  level departmental officials, judges and law officers of districts and townships in the Division and guests.

The commander gave a speech on the occasion. Then, the Division Judge U Po reported on work being carried out  for crime reduction and prevalence of law and order, and the chairmen of District and Township Peace and  Development Councils on work being done for crime reduction.

The concluding remarks given by the commander brought the meeting to a close.

Commander inspects education, construction, irrigation tasks in Mandalay Division

YANGON, 24 May- The opening ceremony of the Computer Course of the Orphanage Care School was held at  the school at the corner of 62nd and 30th Streets in Chanayethazan Township on yesterday morning.

Present on the occasion were Patron of the school Maha Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Çandima, Chairman of  Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, senior  military officers, Secretary of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Ohn, departmental  officials and guests.

At the ceremony, Director-General Lt-Col Win Htein of Department of Basic Education No 2 (Upper Myanmar)  and Head of Mandalay Division Social Welfare Department U Tin Oo formally opened the course.

A total of 124 students from fourth to tenth standards are attending the course.

At 10.30 am, the commander met the chairmen of Kyaukse District and Township Peace and Development  Councils and departmental officials at Kyaukse District Peace and Development Council Office. The commander  gave instructions on regional development, transportation, agriculture and livestock breeding, education and health  matters and attended to their needs.

Then, the commander inspected construction of the new two-storey building of No 3 Basic Education High School  in Ayemya Kyilin Ward in Kyaukse. The commander also inspected construction of the school building of BEPS in  Kin Village and the artisan well of the school. Next, the commander fulfilled the requirements.

Kin Village BEPS , 120 feet in length and 30 feet in breadth, will have six classrooms being built at a cost of K 2  million by Ministry of Education and K 500,000 by local people.

Afterwards, the commander inspected Hanmyintmo-Myogyi section in Kyaukse Township, greening tasks to be  carried out on both sides of the roads and bridges on the road.

In the afternoon, the commander inspected thriving of summer sesame plantations in the irrigated summer sesame  special zone and long-staple cotton plantations in Kyaka Village of Kyaukse Township.

After that, the commander arrived at Zawgyi Water-pumping Project in Kin Village. Head of Mandalay Division  Water Resources Utilization Department U Than Hlaing reported on river water pumping task, water supply and  condition of pumps. Then, the commander inspected functions of the water-pumping station by five pumps.

The commander, then, inspected Ngapyaung Diversion Weir near Than Village of Kyaukse Township and fulfilled  the requirements.

Ngapyaung Diversion Weir is irrigating 27,956 acres of land with Ngapyaung, Nwatet and Upper Linzin feeder  canals.

(8) Mayor inspects Uto-Kya-in Agriculture and Livestock Breeding Project tasks

YANGON, 24 May- Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, accompanied by officials, inspected tasks of Uto-Kya-in Agriculture and Livestock Breeding Project in Taikkyi Township, Yangon Division, this morning and fulfilled the requirements.

First, the mayor inspected fish fry pond, head regulator, strength of the head regulator and Tawyat fish farm and  gave instructions on strengthening tasks of the head regulator to be emphasized.

Then, the mayor proceeded to the Paddy, Vegetable and Fruit Research Centre built by YCDC. The mayor inspected installation of modern research apparatus at the computer room and laboratories and left necessary instructions.

Lecture on Minimum Intervention Dentistry 3 June

YANGON, 24 May- Under the arrangement of education promotion programme for dental surgeons who joined  the Myanmar Dental Surgeons Association, Dr KT Nathan of GC Asia Dental Pte Ltd of Malaysia will give  lectures on Minimum Intervention Dentistry (III) at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road, here, from 9 am to 3  p.m. on 3 June and Sedona Hotel, Mandalay, from 9 am to 2 p.m. on 6 June. Interested dental surgeons may attend  the lectures.

(9) Prize-presenting ceremony of New Generation Golf Championship held

YANGON, 24 May-A ceremony to present prizes to the winners of the Third Leg of the Han Golf Masters New Generation Age-Group Golf Championship, co-organized by Myanmar Golf Federation and mainly sponsored by Pan-West and Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd, was held at Silvery Golf Course of YCDC this morning.

It was attended by President of Myanmar Golf Federation Brig-Gen. Win Hlaing, General Secretary U Aung Kyi  and executives, invited guests and fans. After the second day of the championship, the prize-presentation ceremony  was held. President Brig-Gen. Win Hlaing spoke words of honour and encouragement to the new generation  golfers. Director U Aung Hla Han of HGM presented special prize to six and a half years old Yune Sande,  executive of MGF Director of HGM U Ko Ko Lay to Phone Myat Min Khaing, Wai Phyo Min Tun and Aung Myat  Khin, Joint-Secretary of MGF U Yay Htet Doe to Sandi Toe Saung (Third), Yadanar Moe (Second) and Hnin  Marlar (First), executive of MGF Managing Director of HGM U Chan Han to Ye Myat Win (Third), Lin Moe Tun

Then, President of Myanmar Golf Federation Brig-Gen. Win Hlaing  presented prizes to Phyo Teza Aung (Third), Nay Lin Tun (Second) and Naing Naing Lin (First). Official co- sponsors of the championship were Canon, Wilson, Raipier (Australia), City Golf Restaurant (Swimming Club)  and Star Ice-cream. Academy Science Co Ltd and Sea Green Co Ltd presented special prizes to the golfers.

Woman drug trafficker gets 25 years

YANGON, 24 May-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and local police force, acting  on information, searched the house of Ma Hla Win, 40, of Padamya Street, Kanna (West) Ward in Insein  Township and arrested her together with 3.166 grams of heroin on 10 December, 2000. Insein police station filed  her under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Yangon North District Court handed down twenty- five years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on her on 17 May.
