Yangon, 21 Feb- Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received President of Kansai Economic Federation (Kankeiran) Mr Yoshihisa Akiyama and party at the Guest House of the Ministry of Defence at 3 pm today.

Also present together with Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung Minister for Comrnerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet The guests were accompanied by Ambassador of Japan Mr Shigeru Tsumori.

Ceremony to mark centenary of Maha Gandayon Sayadaw Ashin Janakabhivamsa held in Amarapura

Yangon, 21 Feb- A ceremony to mark the centenary of Amarapura Maha Gandayon Sayadaw Ashin Janakabhivamsa was held in conjunction with the meritsharing ceremony for newly built Chaw Myat Nwe Centenary three-storey Kyaungdawgyi at the Kyaungdawgyi in Amarapura Township this morning.

On behalf of Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint supplicated on religious matters. Present on the occasion were the State Ovadacariya Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Joint Shwekyin Sasanabaing Maha Weikthuddayon Taikthit Zayamedani Waso Sayadaw Bhaddanta Agghiya and members of the Sangha, Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, local authorities, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, wellwishers Dr Tha Yin Myat-Daw Nwe Nwe Aye and family and lay persons.

Wellwishers Dr Tha Yin Myat, wife Daw Nwe Nwe Aye and daughter Chaw Su Myat formally opened the Kyaungdawgyi.

Then, Commander Maj Gen Ye Myint unveiled the stone inscription and sprinkled scented water on it. Afterwards, the ceremony to mark the centenary of Maha Gandayon Sayadaw and merit-sharing ceremony followed.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Agghiya unveiled the picture- of Maha Gandayon Sayadaw. Lay persons paid homage to the picture of the Sayadaw. Members of the Sangha also paid homage to the picture of the Sayadaw. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Agghiya administered the Five Precepts. Members of the Sangha recited parittas. Tipitakadhara Sayadaw of Maha Gandayon Kyaungtaik Ashin Sumingala Linkara read out the biography and religious accomplishments of Maha Gandayon Sayadaw.

Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint supplicated on religious matters. In his supplication, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint said he was pleased to pay respects to members of the Sangha led by State Ovadacariya Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Joint Shwekyin Sasanbaing Waso Sayadaw.

He said Amarapura Maha Gandayon Sayadaw was born in Thayaing village, wetlet Township in Sagaing Division on 7 February 1900 and passed away on 27 December 1977 at the age of 78 and vasa 59.

He said . the Sayadaw wrote 63 treatises including "Future of the Sasana (Religion)". In the book the Sayadaw pointed out some reforms of religious festivals, donations, drafting of education plans for learning of Pali and urged members of the Sangha to lead rural people for promotion of their level of knowledge, he said. The Sayadaw also pointed out weakness and shortcomings of the present condition of Sasana and the book was popular among learners and reading public, he added. The commander spoke on giving lectures, compiling treatises, election of the second Sasanabaing of Snwekyin Gana in 1337 ME and endeavours for unity among the members of the Sangha. The number of members of the Sangha learning dhamma at Amarapura Maha Gandayon Kyaungtaik in creased to over 1,000.

Thus, in memory of their father the late Major Tha Din Gyi and under the patronage of mother Daw Yin Yin May, son Dr Tha Yin Myat and wife Daw Nwe Nwe Aye and daughter Chaw Su Myat of 192, Ingyin Myaing Street, Thuwunna, Yangon, donated

over K 150 million to build the three-story kyaungdawgyi. Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt laid the corner stone on 10 November 1999 to build the Kyaungdawgyi. The commander then wished for the promotion, propagation and perpetuation of the Sasana, saying the State Peace and Development Council has made a firm resolution for the soonest emergence of a new, peaceful, modem and developed nation.

( 2 ) Rules for Armed Forces Day painting and sculpture competitions

Yangon, 21 Feb- The Painting and Sculpture Competitions Sub-Committee under the Poetry and Arts Competitions Organizing Work Committee today issued rules and regulations for painting and sculpture competitions to be held in hailing the 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day.

The painting competition is categorised into six divisions pre-primary school, primary school (kindergarten, first and second standards), primary school (third and fourth standards), middle school (from fifth to eighth standards), high school (ninth and tenth standards, technical and agricultural high schools), and open division.

In sculpture competition, there will be open division only in two genres wood and plaster. The entries for the. preprimary and basic education level painting must be 15 by 20 inches while entries for the open level painting must be 20 by 30 inches. Two passport size photos are to be attached to the entries. The entries for sculpture competition should not be bigger than 36 inches in high and 24 inches in circumference, and must not be the entries of previous years' shows and competitions. Any title can be chosen for the works.

The entrant must inscribe his or her name, National Registration Card number, date of birth, father's name, occupation and address at the bottom. All entries must be based on the 12 national objectives, the 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day objectives, and the 12 fine traditions of the Tatmadaw. All entries (open division) are to be sent to U Tin Maung Lwin, Head of Arts Department, University of Culture, not later than 5 March or Tatmadaw Convention Centre on U Wisara Road from 1 to 5 March. All entries (other division) are to be sent to U Thaung Shwe, Director of Education Planning and Training Department, Sixstorey Complex Building, not later than 16 February 2001. Then, Dr Tha Yin Myat explained the purpose of donating the building. Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife, the mayor and wife, the deputy commander and wife and Dr Tha Yin Myat and family and wellwishers presented offertories to Sayadaws. Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Maha Dhamma-kahtika Bahujana Hitadhara Ashin Indalabhivamsa delivered a sermon. The congregation shared the merits gained. The commander and the donor family offered " soon " to Sayadaws.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General U Khin Maung Latt, Managing Director U Kyi Tun and officials and General Manager of Bayview Hotel Mr Oliver E Soe Thet.

Yangon, 21 Feb-Discussions economic ma between Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industry and Japan Kansai Economic Federation (Kankeiren) were held at Traders Hotel here at noon today. It was attended by Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Adviser to UMFCCI Dr Kyaw Htin, Vice-Presidents U Htein Win and U Win Aung, General Secretary U Zaw Min Win, President of Kansai Economic Federation (Kankeiren) Mr Yoshihisa Akiyama and 37 members, President of Japan Chamber of Commerce (Yangon) Mr Shigeki Ura and members, Managing Director of JETRO (Yangon) Mr Yoshihiro Araki and others. Minister Brig-Gen Abel made an opening speech. Then, Vice-President U Htein Win and President Mr Yoshihisa Akiyama extended greetings. Next, UMFCCI CEC member U Way Phoe presented the paper on Business Opportunities in Myanmar. Afterwards, Kansai Economic Federation (Kankeiren) hosted a working lunch. A general round of discussions was made over lunch.

Yangon, 21 Feb-Cruiseliner MV Crystal Symphony carrying 643 tourists arrived at Thilawa Jetty here this evening under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, the Ministry of Transport and Myanmar Voyages International Tourism Co Ltd. Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority U Thein Htay and officials gave close supervision to the boat. The cruiser with 238 metres in length, 51,044 deadweight-ton and 7.6 metre-draught is the biggest among those that have ever arrived in Myanmar. The majority of the tourists are Americans, and some of them visited the Shwedagon Pagoda while the rest visited Bagan and Mandalay by a special flight. On 22 February morning, the tourists will tour Bago and downtown Yangon. The boat will leave here at 1.30 pm on 22 February.

President of Kansai Economic Federation of Japan arrives

Yangon, 21 Feb-The members of Kansai Economic Federation of Japan led by President Mr Yoshihisa Akiyama arrived here by air this evening. They were welcomed at Yangon Airport by officials of the Ministry of Commerce, Vice-President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Htein Win and officials.

Yangon, 21 Feb-National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting at the meeting hall of NCCC Office at 2 pm today. Present on the occasion were Chairman of NCCC Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairmen Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, and commission members. National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management Committee reported on matters relating to National Convention. Members of the Commission took part in the discussions. Afterwards, the meeting ended with concluding remarks by Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.

Sixth Meeting of Health Secretaries of Countries of WHO South East Asia Region concludes

Yangon, 21 Feb-The Sixth Meeting of Health Secretaries of the Countries of WHO South East Asia Region continued for the third day at Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this morning. Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Kyaw Myint chaired the meeting. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by Deputy Minister Professor Dr Kyaw Myint and Director of South East Asia Region Dr Uton Muchtar Rafei.

Observance of International Women's Day coordinated

Present at the meeting were Chairperson of Leading Committee for Organizing the International Women's Day Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Vice-Chairperson Professor Dr Daw May May Yee and members, advisers, members of Working Committee and Sub-committees and officials of SWD.

Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe made an opening address on the occasion. The leaders of various sub-committees reported on progress of work for observing the International Women's Day ceremony. Then, all-round discussions followed. The meeting came to a close with concluding remarks by Chairperson of the Leading Committee for Organizing the International Women's Day Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe.

( 6 ) Htidaw hoisting ceremony for Kyaikhtiyoe Pagoda coordinated

Yangon, 21 Feb - A coordination meeting of Work Committee and Sub-committees for All-round renovation and Htidaw hoisting of Kyaikhtiyoe Pagoda was held at the meeting hall of Union Solidarity and Development Association Office yesterday morning. Present were Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Nyi Hla Nge, Director-General of Religious Affairs Dr Myo Myint. Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo, the Deputy Director-General of Myanma Radio and Television and others. Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko made a speech. Then, Chairman of Finance Committee Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung explained their work.

Deputy Vice-Chairman of Work Committee Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Nyi Hla Nge reported to the meeting on preparation work for Shwethingan offering ceremony. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the chairman. Then, the deputy ministers and party paid homage to Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Kyaikhtisaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannacipa. Afterwards, well-wishers presented cash and gold to Deputy Ministers. The deputy ministers shared the merits. Bhaddanta Panacipa explained the Seinbudaw, Hnetmyatnadaw and Shwehtidaw. Then, the deputy ministers and party arrived Kyaikhtiyoe pagoda and inspected preparation works for Shwehtidaw hoisting ceremony and Shwethingan offering ceremony at the pagoda. Then, the deputy ministers and party paid homage to Kyaikhtiyoe Taungpaw Kyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannawa.

Yangon, 21 Feb-Chancellor of Thidagu World Buddhist University on Sagaing Hill Honorary Professor of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maaha Saddhammajotikadhaja Maha Dhammakathika Bahu-janahitadhara Ashin „anissara left here for the Republic of Korea by air this evening to carry out missionary work there. The Sayadaw was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Pro-Rector (Admin) of ITBMU Dr Hla Pe, Professor U Maung Maung Lay and officials and lay disciples.

( 7 ) Minister inspects construction site of Lagunpyin Reservoir

Yangon, 21 Feb - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by departmental officials, arrived at construction site of Lagunpyin Reservoir constructed by Yangon Division Irrigation Department at the border line of Yangon and Bago Divisions this morning. At the briefing hall, Director-General of Irrigation Department U Kyaw San Win and officials reported to the minister on work done and work being carried out and storage of water at the reservoir. Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin gave suggestions.

The minister inspected construction of outlet conduit pipe, diaphragm wall and sample of soil, construction of the main reservoir and spillway. The minister and party proceeded to summer paddy special zone in Thanatpin Township. Managing Director of Myanma Agriculture Service U Tun Than and Bago Division Manager U Hla Myo conducted the minister round the construction site. The minister then inspected summer paddy plantation of U Kyawt Shwe and U Aung Maung. The minister and party went to construction site of Paing Kyone sluice gate constructed by Irrigation Department Construction Group No 6 in Kawa Township. Officials reported to the minister on construction project. The minister inspected construction of the sluice gate. In the afternoon, the minister and party met farmers at Samart Village in Khayan Township. The Minster then inspected pedi shwewa plantations in Kayin Seik Village in Thanlyin Township and gave suggestions.

Medal recipients honoured

Yangon, 21 Feb-A ceremony to honour titles and Good Public Service Medal recipients of Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs for 2001 was held at the meeting hall of Development Affairs Department on Thanhlyetson Street in Botahtaung Township this afternoon, attended by Minister Col Thein Nyunt. The minister presented gifts to those who were awarded titles. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun presented gifts to those who were awarded Good Public Service Medals. On behalf of the medal recipients, Deputy Director-General Lt-Col Myint Swe of Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races spoke words of thanks.

Health Minister inspects new hospital in Nyaungdon

Yangon, 21 Feb-Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, accompanied by officials, inspected the work done and installation of machinery of Sarmalauk Village 25-Bed hospital in Nyaungdon Township, Ayeyawady Division this morning. He inspected the installation of hospital equipment and arrangements for power supply of the hospital donated by Myanmar Known You Seed Co Ltd. Then, he inspected the operating theatre delivery room, outpatient department, X-ray room, laboratory, ECG room, halls and bathrooms and gave necessary instructions. He also inspected staff quarters and hostels and gave instructions on effective treatment and cleanliness of the hospital.

Minister inspects construction of Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge No 2

Yangon, 21 Feb- Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by officials of the Public Works, arrived at the construction site of Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge No 2 this afternoon. At the briefing hall, Superintending Engineer of Bridge Construction Group No 1 U Myint Lwin reported to the minister on progress of work, future tasks and collection of construction material. The minister gave necessary instructions to officials. Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge No 2 has 12 approach piers and one approach structure on the bank of Yangon and 14 approach piers and one approach structure on the bank of Thanlyin and totalling 19 piers in the centre of the bridge. The bridge, 4,540.foot long has a 72-foot wide six-lane motorway and six-foot pedestrian lanes on either side. The reinforced concrete bridge can withstand 60-ton loads.

( 8 ) Commander inspects Psychiatric Hospital Project in Amarapura

Yangon, 21 Feb-Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by departmental officials, inspected construction site for Psychiatric Hospital (25-Bed) on Myitnge-Htonebo Road in Amarapura Township in Mandalay Division on 18 February morning. The Commander heard reports on construction of the hospital by Head of Mandalay Division Health Department U Thein Tun and gave instructions. Then, the Commander paid obeisance to Naya Kyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Maydiyabhivamsa at Dakkhina Rama Phayagyi Kyaungtaik in Chanmyathazi Township and offered alms to the Sayadaw.

On 19 February morning, the Commander attended the third-fourth monthly coordination meeting of Mandalay Division Police Force held at Aung San hall of Division Police Commander's Office. After leaving instructions there, the Commander attended the coordination meeting of bank managers of Myanma Economic Bank (Upper Myanmar) held at Mandalay City Hall. The Commander and Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein delivered opening speeches. Afterwards, the Commander together with Minister for Education U Than Aung and departmental officials attended the ceremony to hand over the new buildings of No 22 BEMS, Pyigyitagon Township and No 45 BEPS, Kinbat Village in Amarapura Township donated by wellwishers in the afternoon. The Commander and the Minister formally opened Thazin building of No 22 BEMS in Pyigyitagon Township and gave speeches.

Owner of UE Tiger Head Cement Factory Daw Khin Yee explained the donation, and handed over the documents related to the building to the director-general of No 2 Basic Education Department. The Commander, the Minister and Donor Daw Tin Tin formally opened two new school buildings of No 45, BEPS, Kinbat Village Amarapura Township. The director-general of No 2 Basic Education Department accepted the documents related to the buildings. Thazin two-storey building of No 22 BEMS in Pyigyitagon Township worth K 4.6 millions was donated by Daw Khin Yee, UE Tiger Head Cement factory. A building of No 45, BEPS, Kinbat Village in Amarapura Township worth K 1.4 million was donated by Daw Tin Tin and family of Maha Aungmyae Township, and another building worth K 1.2 million by local people and wellwishers from Mandalay.

Third four-monthly coord meeting of Kayah State Development Committee held

Yangon, 21 Feb-The Kayah State Development Committee held its third four-monthly coordination meeting at the town hall of Loikaw on 17 February morning. Present at the meeting were Chairman of Kayah State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Nyunt Hlaing and members, the chairmen of District/Township Peace and Development Councils and members, the director of Kayah State Development Committee, executives of the Township Development Committee, engineers in charge and staff. Chairman Brig-Gen Nyunt Hlaing made a speech. Director U Win Maung and Chief Engineer U Thein reported on work done in the third four-month period and directions by superiors. Then, the executive officers of Loikaw, Shadaw, Dimawhso, Pruhso, Bawlake, Mesai and Pasawng Township Development Committees reported on work done and needs regionwise. The meeting came to a close with concluding remarks by the director of Kayah State Development Committee.

( 9 )  23rd ISD Golf Championship continues

Yangon, 21 Feb-The 23rd Inter-State/Division Golf Championship co-organized by Sports and Physical Education Department and Myanmar Golf Federation and sponsored by Isuzu Motors Ltd, Japan continued for the second day at Yangon Golf Club in Danyingon this morning. After the second round, Aung Aung Kyaw of Mandalay Division was leading with 150 (73+77), and the runner-up was Thein Zaw Myint of Yangon Division with 152 (72+80) in the men's individual scratch event. Myat Htut Lwin and Aung San Win of Yangon Division and Than Naing of Bago Division tied at the third place with 153 each. Yangon Division was leading with 458 strokes, followed by Mandalay Division with 465 and Champion Bago Division with 468 in the team scratch event. Shan State (South) was leading with 405 strokes, followed by Sagaing Division with 414 and Mandalay Division with 417 in the team handicap event. Bow Aung of Shan State (South) was leading with 133 strokes, and the runner-up was Yin Aung Latt of Shan State (South) with 135 and Aung Win of Sagaing Division with 136 in the men's individual handicap event. The championship continues tomorrow.

575 stimulants tablets seized in Kamayut

Yangon, 21 Feb-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on tip-off, searched two men at the corner of Thanlyin Street and Chindwin Street, Ward 10, Kamayut Township on 26 January 2001. The authorities found 575 stimulant tablets on Tun Moe (a) Tin Htut, son of U Ohn Maung of 62, Third Floor, Myaynigon Market Street, Sangyoung Township and Tin Maung Oo, son of U Khin Maung Than of 100, Bogyoke Street, Ward 4, Mongkai, Shan State (South). Action was taken against the two in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Law.
