(1) Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Bhutan

YANGON, 17 Dec- On the occasion of the National Day of Bhutan which falls on 17 December 2000, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, King of Bhutan.


(2) Senior General Than Shwe inspects river water-pumping projects, dam projects in Magway Division

YANGON, 16 Dec - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence
Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected river water-pumping projects and dam projects in Magway Division yesterday.

The Senior General, while in Popa, Kyaukpadaung Town- ship, Mandalay Division, inspected the extension of Popa Mountain Resort at 8 am yesterday. Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone and officials reported to the Senior General and party on arrangements for the extension of the resort with the use of charts and maps. The
Senior General gave instructions. Accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin,
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, ministers, the deputy minister for health, senior military officers, the chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development
Council and officials, the Senior General left Popa for Umin Koepauk River Water-Pumping Project in Chauk Township, Magway Division by helicopter at 9.15 am.

In the briefing hall of the project, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported to the Senior General and party on implementation to the project and progress of work. Director-General of Water Resources Utilization Department U Win Shwe reported on the digging of the main canal and secondary
canals for the pumping of water from the Ayeyawady River, progress of work in building lakes, tertiary canals and sluice gates and matters related to the pump and power supply. Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw reported on the population of the township, paddy-sown acreage and paddy yields.

Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Win Myint also reported on necessary matters. The Senior General gave instructions and inspected the site chosen for the pump and progress of work in building the main canal. It is learnt that measures are being taken to complete Umin Koepauk River Water Pumping
Project by the end of December. On completion of the project, 7,800 acres of land in Sale region can be irrigated throughout the year. The Senior General and party proceeded to Tanyaung River Water-Pumping Project in Salin Township by helicopter.

In the briefing hall of the project, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported on the project being undertaken by the Water Resources Utilization Department, and Director-General U Win Shwe on progress of work. The Senior General said that efforts are to be made to complete the river water-pumping projects in course of
implementation, and measures are also to be taken to cultivate monsoon paddy in the irrigated area and to strengthen the main canals and secondary canals. In order to ease poor conditions of rural people in Anya region where the weather is scorching hot and water is scarce, huge sums have been invested in the projects
for supply of water such as dams and river water-pumping projects.

Local people are to carry out agricultural work strenuously in conjunction with livestock breeding work. On completion of Tanyaung River Water-Pumping Project, 15,000 acres of land can be irrigated. The Senior General and party left for Salin Dam Project in Salin Township by helicopter at 11.10 am. They were
welcomed by Tactical Operations Commander Col Tun Kyi, member of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Police Col Ye Myint and officials. In the briefing hall of the project, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported on the project and Director-General of the Irrigation Department U Kyaw San Win on
progress of work.

The Chairman of Division Peace and Development Council reported on the agricultural work of the region. The Senior General gave instructions. Afterwards, the Senior General and party inspected construction of the main embankment and the conduit. Salin Dam, about 22 miles away from Linzin Diversion Weir, is being
built on Salin Creek near Shwedwintoo Village in Salin Township. The embankment, 2,770 feet long and 220 feet high, is built of earth. On completion of the project, the dam will be able to irrigate 33,000 acres of land. The Senior General and party went to Mon Creek Multi-purpose Dam Project in Sedoktara Township by
helicopter at noon.

They were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Electric Power U Myo Myint and officials. In the briefing hall of the project, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported on the project with charts and maps, Deputy Minister U Ohn Myint on matters related to the dam and
Deputy Minister U Myo Myint on generation of hydroelectric power. The Senior General gave instructions on the project. Afterwards, the Senior General presented a basket of fruits to engineers of CITIC of the people's Republic of China. Next, the Senior General and party inspected the project. On completion of Mon Creek Multi-purpose Dam Project in Sedoktara Township, 108,000 acres of land can be irrigated and three generators with 25 mega watt each installed to produce electricity.

After inspecting the project, the Senior General and party went to Magway by helicopter in the afternoon. Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Col Thein Nyunt, who accompanied the Senior General, together with Chairman of Magway Division Peace and
Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, met with Secretary of Magway Division USDA U Thwin Lin and executives, secretaries and executives of district and township USDAs in Magway, Minbu, Thayet and Pakokku Districts and executives and organizers of Ward USDAs in Magway at the office of Magway Division
USDA at night. Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, who accompanied the Senior General, together with Director-General of the Department of Medical Science Dr Maung Maung Wint, visited Magway people's Hospital yesterday morning and met with the staff. The minister also met with instructors and trainees of the nurses training school.


(3) Secretary-1 receives members of International Meditation Association

YANGON, 16 Dec- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received
members of International Meditation Association led by Sri Chimmoy at the guest house of the Ministry of Defence at 11.45 am today. Also present were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint. After the call, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt had a souvenir photo taken together with the guests.

Organizing Traditional Medicine Practitioners Conference

YANGON, 16 Dec - The 30th Meeting of the National Health Committee was held in the meeting hall of the National Health Committee at the Office of the Ministry of Health this morning with an address by Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present at the meeting were ministers, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee, deputy ministers, members of the National Health Committee, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, directors-general and officials of the departments under the Ministry of Health. Chairman of the
National Health Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said Myanmar Traditional Medicine Practitioners Conference is going to be held very soon, and the NHC meeting has to discuss the plans for the Conference and the needs to be fulfilled by the government. He lauded MRTV for telecasting interviews and songs in honour of the Myanmar Traditional Medicine Practitioners Conference, but noted that preparations could be assumed sufficient.

He called on the meeting to present the requirements which the government is to fulfil. The previous meeting underscored the need for the Ministry of Health and other related ministries to cooperate and lay down effective plans for implementation in the fight against the scourge of HIV-AIDS while serious attention is being paid to control of HIV-AIDS internationally. He spoke of the need to systematically adopt the health sector-related human resource development programmes including appointment of doctors to meet the demand of the growing population and to provide effective health care services.

In keeping with the guidance of Senior General Than Shwe on implementation of the four-year National Education Promotion Plan, the Ministry of Health has to supply adequate modern teaching aids to the institutes of medicine and lay down effective programmes on proper academic training for the increasing number of students, he said. Secretary of the National Health Committee Director-General of the Health Planning Department Dr Kyi Soe reported on implementation of tasks in accord with the minutes of the 29th
Meeting of the National Health Committee.

Afterwards, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo explained the AIDS control special project and Director-General of Traditional Medicine Department Dr Kyaw Myint Tun the preparations being made for holding Traditional Medicine Practitioners Conference and Traditional Medicine and Medical Equipment Exhibition.
Those present joined in the discussions on implementation of the AIDS control special project, plans for organizing Traditional Medicine Practitioners Conference and Traditional Medicine and Medical Equipment Exhibition, and the school hygiene week movement. The meeting came to an end with the Secretary-1's
concluding remarks.


(4) Information Minister meets private video producers

YANGON, 16 Dec- Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung met with private video producers and gave instructions on producing TV programmes at the meeting hall of Myanma Radio and Television this morning. Also present at the meeting were Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director-General of
MRTV U Khin Maung Htay and officials and private video producers. The deputy minister reported on producing TV programmes and Director-General U Khin Maung Htay on TV programmes. The minister gave instructions on production of TV programmes. Then, the minister and the deputy minister replied to queries raised by the private video producers.

Minister for Transport inspects Myeik Airport

YANGON, 16 Dec- Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Director-General of Department for Civil Aviation U Win Maung, Managing Director of Myanma Five Star Line U Khin Maung Kyi, Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority U Thein Htay, left here for Myeik by air at 7 am today.

The minister and party arrived at Myeik Airport at 8 am. Deputy Commander of Coastal Region Command Brig-Gen Tin Latt, Director of Military Engineers Col Khin Maung Myint and Lt-Col Hla Htay in charge of Myeik Airport conducted the minister and party round the airport. At the briefing hall, Lt-Col Hla Htay
reported to the minister on the project. Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tin Latt, Director-General U Win Maung and Col Khin Maung Myint presented supplementary reports to the minister. Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe gave instructions.

The minister and party then arrived Division Myanma Port Authority Office. Officials reported to the minister on progress of work. The minister attended to their needs. The minister and party proceeded to Seiknge Bridge and inspected mv Loikaw and mv Shweli of Myanma Five Star Line and private vessels. The minister and
party went to Myeik Airport and gave instructions to officials. The minister and party then left for Kawthoung.

Third week mass Hiking held

YANGON, 16 Dec- The mass walking for the third week of December was held in front of Aung San Stadium at 6 am today. Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and officials, Myanmar, Motion Picture Asiayon members, teachers and students of No 2 Middle School in
Mingala Taungnyunt Township, athletes and local people totalling over 900 participated in the walking. The activity started at Aung San Stadium and finished at the same venue. Similar activities were held in Tamway and Thingangyun Townships.


(5) Tatmadaw families, wellwishers offer provisions to monasteries in Mingaladon, Insein

YANGON, 16 Dec- Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and wellwishers made donations to 15 monasteries including Aryudigha PyoOoYin, Maha Winayayama (Shwekyeetha), Tipitaka Maha Gandhayon and Kanthonhsint monasteries in Mingaladon Town- ship this morning.

Chief of Staff (Navy ) Captain Soe Thein, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig- Gen Win Sein, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, senior military officers, officials, Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint, wellwishers and guests at- tended the donations ceremony at Aryudigha PyoOoYin Monastery.

Chairman of Mingaladon Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Presiding Nayaka of Maha Gandhayi Monastery Bhaddanta Pandava administered the Eight Precepts.

The Chief of Staff (Navy), the Chief of Staff (Air), deputy ministers and officials offered donation to Sayadaws. Then, Vice-Adjutant- General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein and Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe offered rice donated by Tatmadaw families to the Township Chairman Sayadaw and nuns of Myayaunggyi and Myatheingi nunneries.

Afterwards, U Thet Win- Daw Myint Myint Khaing and family of Diamond City Company presented K 1.8 million for construction of the archway of Aryudigha PyoOoYin Sarthintaik to Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe. Next, wellwishers donated provisions to Sayadaws and cash towards the funds of the monasteries through the Chief of Staff (Navy) and deputy ministers.

Aryudigha PyoOoYin Sarthintaik Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw Maha Saddham- majotika ,Culavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Ariyavamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

Similarly, Tatmadaw families and wellwishers donated offertories to Myatthanda, Shwenyaungbin, Byugon Tawya, KanU, Athawkayin and Aung Dhamma Waiyon monasteries in Insein Township today.


(6) Workshop on the Social, Cultural and Global Significance of the Family held

YANGON, 16 Dec- The opening ceremony of Workshop on the Social, Cultural and Global Significance of the Family sponsored by World Association of Non Governmental Organizations (WANGO) Myanmar, was held at Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this afternoon.

The workshop was hosted by Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (MMCWA) and Women's Federation for World Peace (WFWP) Myanmar.

Present were Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and EC members, honorary patron members, members of Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs, President and members of WFWP, Director of Foundation for Development and Peace Mr Tony Aparo, resident representative of WANGO, officials of Psychology Department of Yangon University, representatives of Township MCWA and guests.

President of Women's Federation for World Peace (WFWP)-Myanmar Mrs Mieko Saarna extended greetings.

Director of International Affairs, Foundation for Development and Peace Mr Tony Aparo spoke on the occasion.

Chairperson of MMCWA Prof Daw Kyu Kyu Swe discussed "Why do a man and woman need on another in an ideal marriage?" and Representative of WANGO Mr Peeter Saarna"What is the role of the family in supporting young to maintain an obstinent lifestyle before marriage?".

Then, Vice-Chairperson of MMCWA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe discussed "The parent's responsibility in the family", President of Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) Dr Kyaw Win on "What is true love and why is this so important for a civil society" and Head of Master of Psychology of Yangon University Professor Daw
Khin Aye Win "The family should be supported by educators".

Then, those present took part in the discussions. The workshop ended with concluding remarks by Daw Kyu Kyu Swe.

Workshop on reproductive health survey

YANGON, 16 Dec- The Dissemination Workshop on Detailed Analysis of 1997 Reproductive Health Survey was held at the Population Department on Maha Bandoola Road this morning. Present were Deputy Minister for Immigration & Population U Maung Aung, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, heads of department, officials of foreign embassies, UN agencies, NGOs and guests.

Refresher Course on skeletal pain

YANGON, 16 Dec- Refresher Course on Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome organized by Medical Rehabilitation Society, Myanmar Medical Association, was conducted at the auditorium of MMA on Theinbyu Road here this morning. Present were Leading Patron of Women's Chapter of MMA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and members,
Chair- man of MMA Professor Dr Myo Myint and executives, medical superintendents, specialists and guests.

Professor Dr Myo Myint made an opening speech. Dr Pandora Aung Gyi acted as master of ceremonies.

Four topics were presented by Professor U Than Toe on back pain, Prof U Ye Hlaing on knee pain, Dr Sai Woon Ma on shoulder pain and Dr Khin! Myo Hla on neck pain.


(7) Demonstration on Jafra cosmetics

YANGON, 16 Dec -Demonstrations on skin care cosmetics, jointly sponsored by the Myanmar Women's Entrepreneurs Association and Jafra Cosmetics International (Thailand) were held at Hotel Equatorial this afternoon. First, MWEA Chairperson Daw Sein Sein delivered an address. Jafra Co President Mr Thiravat Kettratad explained the company's history. Next, Sales Director Mr Ju Lai Wan introduced Jafra products through a demonstration of the products. Then, Sales Manager Ms Paposanum donated K 100,000 to MWEA.

Sony Products demonstrated

YANGON, 16 Dec-Sony Recording Media and Energy Myanmar Seminar 2000 coorganized by TMW Enterprise Ltd and Mr Sony Marketing Asia Pacific Pte Ltd was held at Sedona Hotel here this morning.

First, Managing Director U Wai Lwin of TMW Enterprise Ltd made a speech. Sony RME Managers Mr Joc Lee and Mr Steven demonstrated Sony products. Present were sales agents and representatives of cording studios, department of health, education a computer.

UMFCCI President tours Tamu

YANGON, 16 Dec - Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industry President U Win Myint and officials arrived Tamu on 9 December afternoon and they were welcomed by Tamu-Kalay-Kalaywa Border Traders Association Chair-man U Hla Maung and CEC members. They discussed matters on border
trade at the meeting hall of the Tamu Township Border Trade Department. After- wards, U Win Myint and party visited' border trade ware houses in Tamu and inspected export items to India. They also visited Nanphalon market.

Commander participates in mass walking in Bago

YANG0N, 16 Dec- The five-mile mass walking took place at the Sports Ground of Bago Division, Bago, this morning.

Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Secretary Lt Cc.l Aung Min and members, commissioner U Chit Maung of Division General Adminiatration Department and the Division Police Commander Police Col Aung Gyi, the chair- men of Bago
District/Township Peace and Development Councils and members, Assistant Director of the Division Sports and Physical Education Department U Win Htut and division level officials, USDA members, Fire Brigade, Red Cross Society, members of Police Force, teachers and students, local people and athletes totalling over
29,500 participated in the mass walking.

Myanmar youth delegation arrives back

YANGON, 16 Dec- A 33- member Myanmar youth delegation arrived back here by air from Japan yesterday after visiting Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Thai- land, Malaysia, the Philip- pines, Vietnam and Japan on the 27th South-East Asian Voyage sponsored by Youth Affairs Management and Cooperation
Agency of Prime Minister's Office of Japan from 24 October to 15 December.

The delegation was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Union Solidarity and Development Association Central Executive Committee members U Than Shwe and U Thein Sein and officials of the USDA Headquarters.

7th Leg Myanmar London Golf Tour continues for third day

YANGON, 1 6 Dec- The Seventh Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour 2000- 2001, organized by Myanmar Golf Federation and Professional Golfers Association and mainly sponsored by Rothmans of Pall Mall Pte Ltd, continued for the third day at Ngan Tay Golf Club in Mawlamyine, Mon State, this morning.

After the third round, Than Aung was leading the professional division with 221 strokes. Min Naing, Soe Myint Lay and Myint Shwe scored 223 strokes each, Aung Win, Win Naing Tun and Win Aung tied at 224.

Zaw Zaw Latt was still leading the amateur division with 220. Zaw Zin Win (Han Golf Masters) fired 2 30, Thein Zaw Myint 233, Nanda Kyaw and Yin Aung Latt were 234 each.

The tour is being co-sponsored by Tiger Beer, Yangon Airways, Canon, Star Cola and Wilson with the aim of turning out golfers who can bring honour to; the State.

Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd organizes the tour. The final round of the tour 4 continues tomorrow.

Yangon bustling with life

YANGON, 16 Dec- The pagodas were packed with devotees, amusement parks and recreation centres with holiday-makers and shopping centres with buyers in Yangon City today.

Members of the Sangha, nuns and laity including tourists flocked to such pagodas as Tooth Relic Pagoda (Yangon), Thiri Mingalar Kaba Aye and Melamu Hsutaungpyi and made meritorious deeds. Similarly, Happy World modern playground in Thirimingalar Market was teeming with holiday-makers enjoying amusement rides and playing different kinds of game joyfully. Likewise, supermarkets, plazas, markets and stores were busy with buyers and cinemas with movie-goers.

Under-25 Advanced Division Soccer Tournament continues

YANGON, 16 Dec- The First Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman's Trophy Under-25 Advanced Division Soccer Tournament, organized by Myanmar Football Federation, continued at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna at 3 pm today. Finance & Revenue beat Energy (Oil) 4-0 in the first match.

Soe Myat Min of Finance & Revenue won the man of the match award. In the second match, Commerce beat Construction 2-0. Tun Tun Win of Commerce won the man of the match award. Transport (A) meets Royal FC in the first match and Forestry will play against Defence in the second match tomorrow evening.

Outstanding students honoured

YANGON, 16 Dec- The Parent-Teacher Association's meeting of No 4 BEMS branch of Defence Services Record Office was held today in conjunction with the ceremony to honour outstanding students. Patron of the PTA Brig-Gen Myo Myint and responsible personnel presented prizes to outstanding students.


(9) 13 members resign from Myittha Township NLD of own accord

YANGON, 16 Dec- Thirteen members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Myittha Township, Mandalay Division. Thirteen members of Myittha Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myittha Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 28 July 2000 as they no longer wished to
participate in party politics of NLD.
