Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-2 said a team led by him had toured the division from 8 to 11 December to inspect production of palm oil, paddy and other crops and road transport. The meeting was held as there are matters which should be coordinated and which should be explained to the respective ministers. The private companies have cultivated oil palm on nearly 30,000 acres in the division at present and have made plans to put more land under the crop in the coming year. The entrepreneurs cultivating oil palm in the region are facing some problems.

Of these problems, the government is giving priority to solving the transport and security problems. Other problems can be solved through coordinations between the respective ministries. As the Myeik-Taninthayi-Bokpyin-Kawthoung Road Project is an important one, transport of heavy equipment, earth works and stone production tasks should be completed as scheduled.

At present Taninthayi Division can produce up to 70 per cent of its food requirements as the government is providing assistance to ensure rice sufficiency in the region. Efforts are required to extend paddy sown acreage and to introduce quality strains that are suitable to the climate condition of the division in enabling the division to ensure cent per cent rice sufficiency. Secretary of Leading Committee for Region-Wise Development of Agriculture Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung explained progress in undertaking Taninthayi Division Development Projects.

Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun reported to the meeting on arrival of heavy equipment to Taninthayi-Bokpyin Road project and requirements and Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin on the ministry's provision of assistance to ensure sufficient rice production in the region and develop oil palm cultivation.
