(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Finland

YANGON, 6 Dec-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of  the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to Her Excellency Ms Tarja Halonen,  President of the Republic of Finland, on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Finland  which falls on 6 December 2000.


(2) Efforts being made to promote human resource beginning from basic education schools  BEHS- 3 in Hpa-an, Kayin State, gets multimedia teaching centre

YANGON, 5 Dec -A multimedia teaching centre was opened at No 3 Basic Education High School in  Hpa-an, Kayin State, this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee  Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Accompanied by ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and  Development Council Office and heads of department, the Secretary-1 left here by air for Hpa-an the  morning On arrival at Hpa-an at 9.30 am, he was welcomed by member of the State Peace and  Development Council Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of  South-East Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, Chairman of Kayin State Peace and  Development Council Col Saw Khin Soe, senior military officers, departmental heads and members of  Union Solidarity and Development Association.

The multimedia teaching centre of the school was formally opened by Headmistress of the school Daw  Mya Mya Kyi and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Saw Yin Htwe. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen  Khin Nyunt unveiled the plaque. The Secretary-1 and party inspected the different sections of the centre.  Headmistress Daw Mya Mya Kyi and member of the school board of trustees U Ko Ko Kyi explained  harmonious efforts being made to open the centre. Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented teaching aids to the  Headmistress.

Secretary of Kayin State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Win Maung, on behalf of  Kayin State Peace and Development Council, presented K 3.8 million to open the centre, U Saw Thein  Myint, on behalf of the school board of trustees, K 800,000, U Khin Maung Yin, on behalf of Kayin  State Traders and Industrialists Association, K 400,000 and U Kyaw Win of Shwe Thanlwin Co Ltd K  500,000. Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt accepted the donations.

Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-1, on behalf of the State, thanked the teachers, wellwishers,  members of the school board of trustees and local authorities for their collective efforts to open the  centre at the school.

He said efforts are being made to nurture the human resources, which are the main requirements in  developing and modernizing the nation, beginning from the basic education schools. The modern  multimedia teaching centres are being opened at schools with the assistance of the public in enabling  students to get access to the ever advancing technologies of the international level. Over 300 schools  now have multimedia teaching centres; it is required to open such centres in many more schools. As the  special four-year programme has been implemented in uplifting the national education level, parents,  people, members of school boards of trustees and teachers should make harmonious efforts in uplifting  the education level of the students to meet international level.

The Secretary-1 and party visited Meboung Monastery and paid respects to Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha  Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Indiya. They also presented offertories to the Sayadaw. They arrived back here  in the evening. Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, who accompanied the Secretary-1, inspected  wards, warehouses, surgical theatre and ICU room at Kayin State People's Hospital today. At his  meeting with the hospital staff, the minister explained points of the special four-year health plan.


(3) Secretary-2 attends 15th meeting of Central Supervisory Committee for Communications   Policy

YANGON, Dec 5 -The Central Supervisory Committee for Communications Policy held its 15th meeting at  the meeting hall of the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs this afternoon, attended by  Chairman of the Central Supervisory Committee for Communications Policy Secretary-2 of the State  Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present were members of the Committee Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung and Minister  for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen  Kyaw Myint, Secretary of the Central Supervisory Committee for Communications Policy Acting  Director of Signals Col Thein Tun and officials.

 At the meeting, Joint-Secretary of the Central Supervisory Committee General Staff Officer (Grade-1)  Lt-Col Hla Thein Swe of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) sought the approval of the  meeting for the minutes of the 14th meeting of the Committee.

Staff Officer (Grade-1) Lt-Col Ye Lwin of Directorate of Signals of the Ministry of Defence sought the  approval of the meeting for the proposals regarding communication equipment submitted by departments  concerned.

Then, Secretary of Central Supervisory Committee Acting Director of Signals Col Thein Tun reported  on matters concerning the proposals for communication equipment for use in agriculture sector.  Afterwards, member of the Central Supervisory Committee Minister for Communications, Posts and  Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin explained the extension of telephone lines, construction of towers for  GSM telephone system, installation of equipment and testing of machines.

 Then, member of the Central Supervisory Committee Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung also  explained the requirements of equipment for broadcasting of Myanma Television programmes by digital  system. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Entrepreneurs urged to cultivate edible oil palm on allotted plots in Taninthayi Division

YANGON, 5 Dec - A coordination meeting on progress of edible oil palm cultivation in Taninthayi Division  was held at the Office of the Prime Minister on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this afternoon.

 Present at the meeting were Chairman of the Committee for Regional Agriculture Sector Development  Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary of the Committee  Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, deputy minister, officials and   entrepreneurs of edible oil palm farms in Taninthayi Division.

 Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the cultivation of edible oil  palm in Taninthayi Division and establishment of farms by companies, and he urged the entrepreneurs to  present their difficulties encountered in their work. He underscored the need for the entrepreneurs to  implement projects drawn up based on their own arrangements so that the objective for Taninthayi  Division to become the " edible oil pot " of the country can be materialized in the targeted period.

As Taninthayi Division is poised for development with its natural resources, the government is paying  serious attention to construction of roads for efficient transport in the division spending large sums of  funds. Although Myeik-Taninthayi Road can now be used all the year round, it is still difficult to use  Taninthayi-Bokpyin Road in the rainy season, he said and added that the road is being repaved to  become a hard, smooth gravel-road in this open season.

Efficient transport, he pointed out, will bring about considerable progress in the division and it will  contribute a great deal to cultivation of edible oil palm and production of edible palm oil. He called on  the entrepreneurs to strive their utmost for materialization of the aims in the agriculture sector while the  government is providing all-out support.

Next, Brig-Gen Lun Maung spoke of the need for the entrepreneurs to check their cultivation acreage of  edible oil palm and the targets for cultivation in the following year with the main data. He said the  entrepreneurs to whom plots have been allotted for cultivation of edible oil palm have to grow the crop  according to the project, and necessary supplies such as strains, fuel and machinery will be provided.  The entrepreneurs reported on completion of cultivation of edible oil palm, stock of edible oil palm  strains, transport, purchase of fuel needed for running machinery and plans to expand cultivation acreage.

Managing Director U Myint Oo of Myanma Perennial Crops Enterprise explained the companies'  cultivation of edible oil palm in Taninthayi Division, arrangements for organizing a seminar on edible oil  palm cultivation technology, land use procedures, marketing and mechanized production, and plans to  form an organization of perennial crops entrepreneurs.

Managing Director of Myanma Agriculture Enterprise U Tun Than spoke of the plans for sufficiency of  rice in the division and cultivation of other crops. Leader of the land use and work implementing special  group Director-General of Settlements and Land Records Department U Gwan Shein reported on  allotment of plots to the entrepreneurs for cultivation of edible oil palm in Taninthayi Division, land  reclamation and areas covered by edible oil palm plantations. Lt-Col Thein Lwin of the Union of  Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd spoke of the plan to supply fuel oil. The meeting came to a close with  the concluding remarks by the Secretary-2.


(4) Minister receives officials of Mitsubishi Corporation

YANGON, 5 Dec- Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received General Manager Mr Shuho  Yamanokuchi and party of Yangon-based Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan at his office this afternoon.  Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thein Tun, directors-general and managing  directors of departments and enterprises.

YANGON, 5 Dec- Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko met Leader of  Kanagawa Religious Association of Japan Mr Royujo Kurata and party at his office at 11 am today.  Also present were directors-general of departments under the ministry and officials.


(5) Minister inspects factories in Yangon Division

YANGON, 5 Dec-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen  Thein Tun and officials, inspected Enamel Ware Factory No-2 of Myanma General and Maintenance  Industries in Okkyin, Hline Township, this morning. First, officials reported to the minister on work.  Then, he inspected production processes of the factory.

Products of the factory are available at Win Thuza Shops, on market ships and at the shops and pagoda  festivals. He gave instructions on manufacturing quality products and doing more research work. Central  Executive Committee member of Union Solidarity and Development Association U Aung Thaung, in the  afternoon, attended membership card presenting ceremony and membership application presenting  ceremony held at Myanmar Pharmaceutical Factory in Gyogon, Insein Township. Factory Manager U  Zaw Win presented K 20,000 to Secretary U Naing Win of Insein Township USDA. Afterwards, the  secretary presented 1,568 membership cards to the factory manager. Organizer U Tun Tun presented  1758 applications to the secretary. Then, the CEC member gave a speech.

Commander inspects harvesting of monsoon paddy in Patheingyi Township

YANGON, 5 Dec-Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of  Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Tactical Operations Commander Col Tun Kyi and officials  inspected harvesting of paddy at the farm of U Thaung Han in Thamantaw Village in Patheingyi  Township on 3 December. Altogether 28,763 acres of monsoon paddy have been cultivated in the  Township for 2000-2001 and 1,682 acres were harvested. Average per acre yield is 89.73 baskets.  The commander and party inspected construction of Nadaungkya Bridge and paving of the road on the  approach structure.

He also inspected Lucky Plastics Factory of Myanmar Plastics Industry Co Ltd in Industrial Zone-1 in  Pyigyidagun Township. The commander and party inspected private auto workshops and fulfilled the  requirements. The commander went to Mandalay People's Hospital and inspected construction of  three-storey rehabilitation hospital donated by U Han Shein and Thiha Thudhamma Theingi Thiri  Thudhamma Theingi Daw Mya Mya Lay.

The commander paid respects to State Ovadacariya Gainggyoke Kyaung Sayadaw in Nanhsan Agga  Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Bhaddanta Kondanna receiving treatment at the hospital and inspected  installation of lift at the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital in Mandalay.

Minister inspects milling and distribution of groundnut oil in NyaungU

YANGON, 5 Dec-Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San arrived at oil mill of Anawrahta General  Economic Enterprise Cooperative Syndicate in NyaungU Township and inspected milling and  distribution of groundnut oil and warehouses on 4 December. The minister inspected the production  process of groundnut oil. Officials reported on purchase of raw materials, milling, sale of oil to Yangon  and Mandalay at reasonable price. The minister gave instructions on laying down plans for oil sufficiency  in the country in cooperation with cooperative societies and marketability.

The mill sells ground-nut oil packed in 50 ticals and one viss bottle. The minister went to Kyaukpadaung  and inspected storage of pesinngon, pedisein and corn for export at the warehouses. The minister met  teachers and students at Myanma Lacquareware Institute and presented clothes donated by International  Academy Association (IAA) of the Republic of Korea to the principal.


(6) Commander of South-West Command receives study group from LPDR

YANGON, 5 Dec-Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of  South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann received study group from Lao People's  Democratic Republic at the command in Pathein on 1 December. The group was here to study measures  for preventing iodine deficiency, Universal Salt Iodination (USI) and Potassium Iodate Revolving Fund  (PIRF) in Myanmar.

The commander attended the opening ceremony of farm machinery showroom of Good Brothers Co  Ltd in Pathein. The commander and Managing Director of Good Brothers Co Ltd U Hla Oo spoke. Secretary of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Sein Maung and Managing  Director U Hla Oo formally opened the showroom and the commander formally unveiled the signboard.

The commander and guests observed the farm machinery. The commander spoke at talks held to  commemorate the World AIDS Day. Head of Division Health Department Dr Than Aung and Dr Aung  Sein of anti-AIDS branch gave talks on ill-effects of AIDS. The commander and officials presented  prizes to winners of cartoon, painting, poster and quiz in commemoration of AIDS Day.

Commander, Minister attend pile-driving ceremony for construction of Sittoung River Bridge (Shwekyin-Madauk)

YANGON, 5 Dec-A pile- driving ceremony for construction of Sittoung River Bridge (Shwekyin-Madauk)  was held at the construction site in Madauk, Bago Division, this morning. Present were member of the  State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council  Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun,  heads of department, military officers, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Union  Solidarity and Development Association and Red Cross Society and local people. At the briefing hall,  Project Senior Engineer U Win Aung explained the construction project and waterway of Sittoung River  to the Commander, the Minister and party.

Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye and Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun attended to their needs. Then, the  pile-driving ceremony was held. Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye and Minister for Construction Maj-Gen  Saw Tun delivered speeches. Then, Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun and  Police Commander of Bago Division Police Col Aung Gyi took the respective places. At the auspicious  time, the piles were driven and scented water was sprinkled onto them. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun,  Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye and Police Col Aung Gyi sprinkled scented water on the piles. Later,  Officials performed the ritual of golden and silver showers to mark the success of the ceremony.


(7) Ninth Buddha Pujaniya of Alodawpyay Pagoda opens

YANGON, 5 Dec- The Ninth Buddha Pujaniya of Alodawpyay Pagoda was opened at the pandal of the  pagoda in NyaungU at 9 am today. Members of the Sangha and the congregation recited Namo Tassa  three times and Alodawpyay Sayadaw administered the Five Precepts. Also present were chairmen of  NyaungU District and Township Peace and Development Councils and members, departmental officials  and guests. Chairman of NyaungU District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Oo  formally opened the Pujaniya. Members of the Sangha started to recite Pathana. Entertainment  programmes include at the Pujaniya up to till 19 December.

Donation ceremony for Shwedagon Pagoda held

YANGON, 5 Dec - The 355th donation ceremony for Shwedagon Pagoda was held at Ancient Buddha  Images Tazaung of the pagoda this afternoon. Wellwishers totalling 205 presented gold foils and cash  amounting to K 15,061,768 for the pagoda. Members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees accepted the  donations and presented certificates of honour to the donors. The congregation then shared the merits  gained.

Pre-contests of Tatmadaw Rowing Championships held

YANGON, 5 Dec- The pre-contests of the Year 2000 Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services' Shield  Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Traditional, International and Kayak Rowing Championships were  held for the second day at Inya Lake, the Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation, today. Six events  of the championship were held today. The championships continue tomorrow.

 Third Inter-Ministry Yuzana Trophy Taekwondo Tournament opens

YANGON, 5 Dec- The opening ceremony of Third Inter-Ministry Yuzana Trophy Taekwondo Tournament  was held at Aung San Gymnasium this morning. Among the spectators were Secretary-General of  Myanmar Olympic Committee Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department U  Thaung Htaik and officials, President of Myanmar Taekwondo Federation Chairman of Yuzana  Construction Group U Htay Myint, vice-presidents, executives, Secretary U Naw Taung and guests.  Secretary-General of MOC Director-General of SPED U Thaung Htaik made a speech and opened the  tournament. Then, selected Myanmar Taekwondo athletes demonstrated their skills. The tournament will  continue up to 7 December.


(8) Course on control of narcotic drugs, precursor chemicals opened in Mandalay

YANGON, 5 Dec - A course on control of narcotic drugs and precursor chemicals sponsored by the  Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC) and the Japanese International Cooperation  Agency (JICA) was opened in Aung San Hall of Mandalay Division Police Commander's Office  yesterday. Joint Secretary of CCDAC Police Colonel Kham Aung made a speech. Next, Mr Takeru  Hamabe of Japan National Police Force extended greetings. Four officers of Japan national Police  Force and officers of Myanmar Police Force are giving training on control of narcotic drugs, and  carrying out search and seizure of precursor chemicals. Altogether 35 trainees of the narcotic drug  control units are attending the 12-day course.

Talks on danger of narcotic drugs to students

YANGON, 5 Dec-A ceremony to open talks on the danger of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances  co-organized by Kyauktada Township Drug Abuse Control Committee and Township Anti-Narcotics  Association was held at the hall of No 1 Basic Education High School, Kyauktada Township, this  morning. Also present on the occasion were the township health officer, physicians from Psychiatric  Hospital, the chairman of Township Peace and Development Council and members, members of USDA,  MMCWA, Myanmar Red Cross Society and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, the Township Education Officer,  the principal, teachers and students. Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Maung  Maung Soe delivered an opening speech. Vice-President of Myanmar Anti-Narcotics Association U  Nyunt Maung and Dr U Ba Thaung of the Psychiatric Hospital gave talks on the danger of narcotic  drugs and psychotropic substances with the use of slides and the viewed the exhibition.

 0.58 kilo of heroin seized in Muse Township

YANGON, 5 Dec-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and MPF, acting on  information, searched a passenger car (Tha/9453) which left Kutkai for Muse, Shan State (North), at  the check point at the entrance to Muse on 15 November and arrested Kyon Kaung Myin, passenger,  son of U Kyo Yok Hwun, Naunghant Village, Kutkai Township, together with two cakes of heroin  weighing 0.58 kilo. Action was being taken against him according to the law.


(9)  26 members resign from Kyunsu Township NLD of own accord

YANGON, 5 Dec - Twenty-six members resigned of their own accord from the National League for  Democracy of Nyaungbee Village tract, Kyunsu Township, Taninthayi Division. Twenty-six members  resigned of their own accord from the NLD of Nyaungbee Village tract, Kyunsu Township, Taninthayi  Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty  Democracy General Election Sub-committee and the party concerned on 7 September 2000 as they no  longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
