Yangon, 23 Nov - The meeting between Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council  General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and official goodwill Myanmar delegation, who were on  a friendly visit to India, and the chairman and members of the board of directors of the Confederation of  India Industry and Indian industrialists was held at Le Meridian Hotel in New Delhi on 17 November  afternoon.

Chairman of CII Mr Arum Bharat Ram extended greetings. Speaking at the meeting, General Maung Aye  said Myanmar and India have been friendly nations since ancient times and there have been bilateral  relations between the peoples of the two nations.

He expressed hope that his visit has further strengthened the existing bilateral cooperation. He said  Myanmar regained her independence on 4 January 1948; but due to the internal strife, the country did not  achieve progress and lagged behind in development. The present government since its assumption of the  State duties has given priority to the national peace and stability; and the 17 armed groups understanding  the goodwill of the State and the Tatmadaw returned to the legal fold and are implementing national  development tasks together with the government. Due to the efforts of the government, the nation is able to  lay good foundations in the political, economic, social and administrative sectors. As the Union of Myanmar  is home to 135 national races, the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and  Development Affairs was set up to work for the development of the entire nation including the border  areas.

In addition to fulfilling the basic requirements of the transport, health and education sectors, the government  is also creating favourable economic opportunities. Poppy cultivation and production in the former poppy  cultivated areas are declining as the areas are achieving greater peace and stability, progress in economic  and social sectors and enjoying a higher living standard. All the targets were realized in implementing the  first four-year short-term economic plan which began in 1992. This is the final year of the five year  economic plan, which began in 1996-97; during the five-year plan period, the nation has seen the annual  GDP growths exceeding the respective year's targets. This year's per capita income is K 44,000 up 23  times from K 1,940 in 1988. As the national economy is growing, the nation is able to significantly hike the  monthly salaries of the government staff.

A large number of roads, bridges and irrigation facilities, which are the infrastructure required for nation  progress, have been built; in the past there was only one bridge on Ayeyawady River, which is the longest  watercourse in the nation; at present, four new bridges have been completed on the Ayeyawady and  another four are under construction. Efforts are being made for the progress of human resources required  in building a modern and developed nation. It is hoped that India, which is enjoying development in technical  sector, would assist Myanmar's technical development programmes.

There are many sectors and opportunities for Myanmar and India to work on common interest. Deputy  Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla said Myanmar is effectively implementing  the market-oriented economic system; it is inviting local and foreign investments and technical knowhow in  striving to promote the industrial sector. He explained the areas such as the technical-knowhow, economic,  trade, investment, the private, the State-own, industrial, rail transport, agriculture, heavy hydel power  projects, mineral exploration and pipe laying sectors in which Myanmar and India can launch mutual  cooperations. He also sought means to invite direct investment in the industrial, agricultural, farming,  forestry, mineral and energy sectors.
