(1)  International IT Exhibition 2000 commences

YANGON, 20 Oct - International IT Exhibition 2000, sponsored by Myanmar Computer Scientist Association and Myanmar Computer Industry Association, was opened at the Tatmadaw Convention Centre on U Wisara Road in Dagon Township this morning. Chairman of Myanmar Computer Technology Development Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the opening ceremony.

Also present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, ministers, deputy ministers, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, chairmen, executives and members of Myanmar Computer Federation, Myanmar Computer Industry Association and Myanmar Computer Scientist Association, owners of local and foreign computer companies, teachers, students and guests. Chairman of Myanmar Computer Industry Association U Tin Win Aung explained the purpose of the exhibition.

Then, Chairman of MCIA U Tin Win Aung and Chairman of MCSA U Thein Oo formally opened the exhibition. Next, the Secretary-1 and party and guests viewed the exhibition. Myanmar Computer Industry Association and Myanmar Computer Scientist Association presented a laser printer of OKI type for the Office of the Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence, to the Secretary-1. Altogether 42 local and foreign computer companies have opened 146 booths at the exhibition and put on display electronic equipment related to the computer and modern computer technology from 9 am to 5 p.m. till 22 October.


(2) Secretary-2 attends coord meeting on crime reduction, education and information

YANGON, 20 Oct - A co-ordination meeting on crime reduction, education and information was held in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Home Affairs this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo. Also present were member of the Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and departments and officials.
The Secretary-2 said that due to efforts of the Committee for Crime Reduction, Education and Information, the number of crimes is declining remarkably in the area of Yangon Division year after year; in bringing down the number of crimes, it can be said that success has been achieved to some extent; however, everybody should be satisfied with this success, and they need to keep track of incidence of crime, to take prevention measures and to expose the cases as soon as they break out; it is also required to seek ways and means for the prevention of outbreak of crimes; only then can the outbreak of crimes be prevented and will the people place trust and confidence in the police force.

The Committee for Crime Reduction, Education and Information has been taking measures to bring down the number of incidence of crime by laying down five tasks, and it is found that success has been achieved. As petrols of four districts of Yangon Division have been made by car, boat and bicycle and on foot, more and more action can be taken week after week, month after month.

As regards keeping a close watch on those who are given to committing crimes and likely to do so, prevention measures have been taken according to the law, and in connection with crime suppression, prevention measures have been taken against five kinds of theft; the number of outbreak of theft is not increasing but decreasing week after week and month after month; more and more measures have been taken to prevent outbreak of crimes. With respect to giving education on crime reduction to the people, it can be assessed that success has been achieved to some extent. In taking measures to mete out deterrent punishment, it is found that cases related to ten kinds of offences, five kinds of theft and nine kinds of prevention measures have been sent to the court in a proper and correct way, and the punishment which fits the crime is to be handed down speedily and correctly.

Priority should be given to crime prevention, exposing and taking action against crimes, and handing down just verdicts in reducing the crime rate. Police should be polite in dealing with people, should stay away from acts that may cause public annoyance and should be disciplined. TVs, radio and periodicals should be widely used in launching crime education and information programmes. The committee while maintaining its current success should strive to gain more in the future. He then invited suggestions that may lead to gaining momentum and ensuring harmony in launching crime reduction and prevention activities. Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than explained systematic supervision being given to decrease the number of crimes in Yangon Division and cooperation with other departments in implementing the task.

Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing presented matters relating to cooperative efforts of the departments under the ministry in reducing crime rate and implementing of staff welfare programmes. Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung discussed pros and cons in launching the project. Deputy Chief Justice U Than Oo and Deputy Attorney-General U Khin Maung Aye reported the meeting on matters relating to the law. Director-General of MPF Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Provost Marshal Brig-Gen Saw Hla, Commander of CID Police Brig-Gen Maung Maung Than and officials also took part in the discussions. The Secretary-2 gave suggestions.


(3) Delegates who attended 22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers’ Conference leave for home
 
YANGON, 20 Oct-The delegates and observers who attended the 22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers’ Conference hosted by Myanmar for the first time, left here for home by air today. The delegates of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam left here yesterday morning, those of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Cambodia and Thailand this morning, those of Indonesia and Malaysia this afternoon and those of ESCAP this evening respectively. They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Directors-General of the Ministry of Rail Transportation Col Hla Thaung Myint and U Kyaw Hsan and officials.


(4) Commander visits Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image

YANGON, 20 Oct- Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on Min-dhamma Hill on Min-dhamma Road in Insein Township was teeming with pilgrims, members of the Sangha, tourists and devotees from the morning to evening today. At 6 am today, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than visited the Image.

Secretary of Mindhamma Hill All-round Construction Committee No 3 Military Region Commander Col Win Maung, stone sculptor U Taw Taw and officials welcomed and conducted the commander round the construction site.  Yesterday evening, the Mindhamma Hill All-round Construction Committee held the weekly co-ordination meeting at the briefing hall. Present were Chairman of the Committee Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Chairman of the Image Carving Committee Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, members and officials.

At the meeting, Chairman of the Committee Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko gave a speech. Officials reported on progress in construction and requirements. The Chairman attended to their requirements.  While engineers and workers of Building Construction Project Special Group-2 of Public Works are constructing Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi, southern retaining wall of the hill and southern and northern stairways of the hill, stone sculptor U Taw Taw and group are carving the Image daily. From 7 am to 10 p.m. daily, Dhammacakka wut associations recited Dhammacakka Sutta, Anattalakkana Sutta, Dharana paritta and religious verses at the Image. Township wut associations, departments and military units also recited parittas yesterday and today. Ministry of Religious Affairs and News and Periodicals Enterprise opened book shops on Mindhamma Hill and sold books on religion and general knowledge. Sarpay Beikman will open its book shop tomorrow. Donations by the public have amounted to K 81,772,696 from 5 August to date. The Fund-raising Unit opens on the hill from 7 am to 9 p.m. daily.


(5) Minister meets athletes who are going abroad

YANGON, 20 Oct-Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint addressed the athletes who are going abroad, at the meeting hall of the ministry this afternoon.  The ceremony was attended by Secretary of Myanmar Olympic Committee

Director-General U Thaung Htaik of Sports and Physical Education Department and officials and members of Myanmar sports teams. First, members of Myanmar sports teams were introduced to the minister.  Then, the minister delivered a speech. He urged the athletes to strive to enhance the dignity of Myanmar as good citizens and to try to acquire valuable experiences. He also urged the chess players to strive to make Myanmar known to the world. Later, officials reported to the minister on preparations for a visit to be paid by Myanmar Team led by Director U Maung Win of Sports and Physical Education Department to Japan from 25 October to 1 November and the trip of Myanmar Chess Team to take part in the 34th World Olympic Chess Championship to be held in Turkey from October 28 to November 12. Then, the minister gave necessary instructions.

Primary Teachership Course No 32 of University for Development of National Races concludes

YANGON, 20 Oct - Primary Teachership Course No 32 of the University for Development of National Races concluded in Pinlon Hall of the university this morning. Present on the occasion were Chairman of UDNR Council member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, division-level officials, Pro-Rector of UDNR Daw Khin Si Si, professors, heads of department, registrars, lecturers, faculty members, officials, students of the course No 32 and their parents. Rector of UDNR Col Zaw Min Thein read the report on the points of the course.

Vice-Chairman of UDNR Council Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board Dr Than Nyunt presented certificates to 97 students of Sagaing Division, Taninthayi Division, Bago Division, Magway Division,  Mandalay Division, Mon State, Rakhine State and Yangon Division, and Rector of UDNR Col Zaw Min Thein, to 164 students of Shan State North, Shan State South, Shan State East, Ayeyawady Division, Kachin State, Kayah State, Kayin State and Chin State. Representatives of State/Division Peace and Development Councils presented appointments to them. Chairman of UDNR Council member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win presented prizes to students who were outstanding in the course.

Speaking on the occasion, the commander said the students should strive with their utmost efforts to uplift the dignity of the university which is systematically producing hard-core education staff for regional development.  Their first duty is to organize the national race youths of the regions to have the desire to learn and to teach them basic education. They should strive to promote human resources in developing border areas. Education plays a vital role in developing human resources. Thus, efforts should be made to upgrade the education level of national youths. As interrelations between nations are increasing due to globalization, the developing nations are striving to free themselves from the influences of some big countries. All should make efforts to ensure that changes are occurring in conformity with the history and traditions and culture of the nation.

The government is implementing the education system based on computer science and information technology in producing new generation intellectuals and intelligentsia who are brilliant in all-round sectors. It is striving to develop the nation on all fronts in enabling Myanmar to stand as a modern nation in the future. Efforts should be made to uplift the education, ability and morale of the youths. The students should try to develop the Union Spirit of the national youths. It is the duty of the young persons to enable the developing Myanmar to stand tall among the world nations.

Our Three Main National Causes is the essential requirement in implementing the task. Thus, they should always uphold Our Three Main National Causes with is the national conviction. As they are members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, they should actively take part in the association’s activities. They should make contacts with the USDAs at different levels when they arrive back to their respective places and should organize their pupils to partake in the USDA functions. Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win, Chairman of CSSTB Dr Than Nyunt and party cordially greeted the students. They then posed for photo together with the students.

Dinner held in honour of concluding ceremony of UDNR teachership course

YANGON, 20 Oct- Vice-Chairman of University for Development of National Races Council Chairman of Central Management Committee of the University Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board Dr Than Nyunt hosted a dinner in honour of the concluding ceremony of the No 32 primary teachership course at the gymnasium of the university yesterday evening. Present on the occasion were Chairman of UDNR Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, members of departmental officials, the Pro-Rector and officials, trainee teachers and guests.
Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win and Chairman Dr Than Nyunt cordially met trainee teachers. During the dinner, variety songs were presented to the guests and trainee teachers. After the dinner, trainee teachers presented traditional dances and songs to the extinguished guests. Then, Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win and Chairman Dr Than Nyunt presented the flower basket and cash prize to the trainee teachers who presented with traditional dances and songs.

Minister meets foreign guests

YANGON, 20 Oct-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met Hong Kong entrepreneurs and agents of the companies which are running their business in Myanmar, at Meeting Hall No 1 of the Ministry of Commerce on Strand Road this afternoon. They discussed matters relating to investment and promotion of trade. Also present at the call were Adviser at the Ministry of Commerce U Hla Tin, directors-general, managing directors and officials. Similarly, the minister also received Chairman of Myanmar Tractors and Trading Co Ltd Mr A Mazumdar and party at his office this morning. Also present at the call were directors-general, managing directors and officials of the Ministry.

Deputy Minister receives Japanese guests

YANGON, 20 Oct-Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan received Managing Director of Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) Mr Yoshihiro Araki and party at his office on Strand Road this morning. Also present at the call were Director-General of Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye, Director-General of Border Trade Department Col Nay Win and officials of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading.


Medical equipment donated to YGH

YANGON, 20 Oct-The officials of Premier Petroleum Myanmar Ltd in Yangon donated an autoclave worth US $ 2,000 to Yangon General Hospital this morning. It was attended by Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Myo Thant, professors, the deputy superintendent and members of YGH Board of Directors. First, the donor explained the purpose of the donation. Then, the autoclave was presented to Dr Myo Thant who presented a certificate of honour to the donor.


(7) Schedule of examination centres and special lectures of UDE Mandalay announced

YANGON, 20 Oct-The final examinations for 1999-2000 academic year of Mandalay University of Distance Education will be held and second batch special lectures given at Mandalay University, Magwe University, Taunggyi University, Monywa University, Myitkyina University, Meikhtila Degree College, Pakkoku Degree College, Shwebo Degree College, Kalay Degree College, Lashio Degree College, Yenan-gyoung College, Loikaw College and Kengtung College.  Special lectures will be given from 24 October to 2 November. Examinations will be held from 6 to 14 November. First year students majoring in Art, Law and Economics and third year Art and Law students who are registered at the UDE Mandalay are to attend special lectures at Mandalay University.

(8)  Spellings of 12 kinds of narcotics substituted

YANGON, 20 Oct- By exercising the power given according to sub-section B of section 30 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law, the Ministry of Health announced in its notification on 20-4-93 that according to sub-section A of section 2 of that law, 125 kinds of drugs were designated as narcotics. According to Notification No 4/2000 issued yesterday by the Ministry of Health, out of these 125 kinds of narcotics the spellings of 12 were substituted as follow Acetyl-dihydrocodeine, Acetyl-methadol, Beta-hydroxyfen-tanyl, Clonitazene, Furethidine, Metazocine, Methado-neintermediate, Metopon, Nicocodine, Norpipanone, Pholcodine and Thebaine.

Drug traffickers get 25 years in prison

YANGON, 20 Oct-The Yangon West District Court handed down a sentence of 25 years’ imprisonment each on two men on 29 September this year. A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and Yangon Special Anti-drug Squad, at Lanthit Street, Lanmadaw Township, at 7.30 am on 19 April 2000, searched two suspects Lwin Soe and Win Htay and seized 2.562 kilograms of marijuana. The Lanmadaw Township Police Station filed Lwin Soe, 30, son of U Hla Kyi, of Thukhathaya Street, Zegon Village, Shwepyitha Township, and Win Htay, 32, son of U Thet Nyunt, Uyinthaya Street, the same township, under Sections 15/19 (A)/ 21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Yangon West District Court sentenced the two to 25 years each in prison under Section 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(9) 11 members resign from Kungyangon Township NLD of own accord

YANGON, 20 Oct- Eleven members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Kungyangon Township, Yangon Division. Eleven members of Kungyangon Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kungyangon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 12 August 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
