(1) Sacred Buddha Images of Inlay PhaungdawU Pagoda conveyed back to Sankyaungdaw

YANGON, 15 Oct - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye today attended the ceremony to convey the sacred Buddha Images of Inlay PhaungdawU Pagoda back to the Sankyaungdaw in Namhu Village, Nyaungshwe Township, Shan State.

The sacred images were conveyed round 21 regions of Inlay for 18 days, from the 1st Waxing to the 3rd Waning of Thadinkyut, for public obeisance.
 
General Maung Aye was accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, the ministers, the deputy minister and officials. They helicoptered to Nyaungshwe early this morning, and proceeded from Nyaungshwe to PhaungdawU Kyaungdaw in Namhu Village by motored boats.

They were welcomed there by departmental officials and members of the Board of Trustees. General Maung Aye and party waited at Mingala Mandat for the sacred Buddha Images to arrive. Tourists were among the devotees, local people and visitors from various parts of the country thronging the precincts of PhaungdawU Kyaungdaw. The sacred images on board Maha Ushaung Karaweik Barge ushered by the Inlay traditional leg-rowing boats, soon-offering boats of Heya Ywama and Soondawgyi Karaweik Barge arrived at Inlay PhaungdawU Kyaungdaw at 9.30 am. General Maung Aye and party, and devotees paid obeisance to the sacred images conveyed by Inlay PhaungdawU Pagoda Ovadacariya Sayadaws, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Dhammacara of Thalay Village-tract, Hlaingkyu Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Mahinda, Heya Ywama Shwebontha Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Vepullabhivamsa, Ovadacariya Sayadaws headed by PhaungdawU Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumuda.

Together with minister and deputy minister, officials are conveyed one sacred image. While the sacred images were being conveyed from the barge to the Sankyaung, devotees and pilgrims paid obeisance all along the way and made cash donations.

After the images had been placed in Sankyaung, General Maung Aye and party offered flowers, lights and water. Next, they offered gold leaves, and the General signed the visitors' book and donated cash.

The General and party visited Namhu Kyaungtaik, paid respects to Inlay Phaung-dawU Pagoda Ovadacariya Sayadaws and presented offertories.

They then attended the finals of Inlay Traditional Boat Race marking the ceremony to convey back the sacred images. General Maung Aye and party presented the prizes to the winning teams.

In Nyaungshwe later, the General and party visited Kangyi Pariyatti Sarthintaik and paid respects to the State Ovadacariya Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Shwekyin Nikayadipati Dhammasenapati, the 13th Shwekyin Sasanabaing Kangyi Pariyatti Sayadawgyi Bhaddanta Vimalabhivamsa. They arrived back in Yangon this evening.


(2) General Maung Aye gives instructions on development of industries in Taunggyi

YANGON, 15 Oct - Chairman of the Central Committee for Development of Industries Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, together with Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party, met with industrialists of Ayethaya Industrial Zone in Ayethaya Myothit, Taunggyi Township, at 11.30 am yesterday.

Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi in charge of Ayethaya Industrial Zone reported on arrangements for the improvement of roads in the industrial zone, power supply, water supply, installation of telephone lines, availability of raw materials and technical assistance.

Chairman of the Committee for Development of Myanma Industries Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung reported on condition of Ayethaya Industrial Zone out of 18 industrial zones in states and divisions and assistance to be provided for the development of the industrial zone. Industrialist U Swe of Ayethaya Industrial Zone reported on condition of industries and requirements for extension of industries.
 
Then, General Maung Aye said that efforts are being made for the economic development of the State on the basis of the agriculture sector, and as a result, production of crops including paddy is improving. As much as production of the main crop, paddy, is increasing, there will be sufficient paddy for local consumption as well as paddy surpluses.

As extra crops have been grown, measures have been taken to switch from conventional farming to mechanized farming. While measures are being taken to introduce a modern mechanized farming system, continued efforts are to be made to build the nation into an industrialized one. The building of an industrialized nation requires enough investment and technology as well as natural resources. To develop scattered private industries, 18 industrial zones including Ayethaya Industrial Zone have been established. Emphasis will be given to modernization and development of private industries which are no far better than a smithy and emergence of import-substitute industries and export industries.

At the same time, the government, on its part, is setting up heavy industries with the aim of tapping natural resources of the State. Plans designed to produce technicians, engineers and computer technicians needed for a modern, developed and industrialized nation, have been laid down and implemented, and thus human resources are being nurtured.

On account of the correct policy and encouragement of the State, industries which are of great benefit to the nation, are emerging step by step. It is necessary to exert strenuous efforts to enable Ayethaya Industrial Zone to keep pace with other improving industrial zones.

Then, the General had a cordial meeting with the industrialists, and inspected maize-cleaning machines, weeders, drum seeders, iron wire meshes and gears. The General also inspected jeeps at the industrial zone. In the afternoon, the General and party left Ayethaya Industrial Zone for Taunggyi.

The Secretary-2, together with officials, went to Nyaungshwe Township. At the control office of wildlife conservation project, which covers the area of 20 square miles around Inlay Lake, the Secretary-2 and party met with Secretary of Shan State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Win Maung and members and departmental officials of Shan State, Taunggyi District and Nyaungshwe Township. The Secretary-2 said that Inlay Lake is a famous natural lake, and with the passage of time, Inlay Lake has silted up.

Therefore, Head of State Senior General Than Shwe has given guidance on the systematic laying down of plans for the perpetual existence of Inlay Lake, and necessary assistance has been provided. The Secretary-2 also said that the purpose of his meeting with them is to know measures designed to make Inlay Lake beautiful and pleasant and conserve wildlife and to provide necessary assistance.

Next, Chairman of Taunggyi District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Ye Tun Sein and officials reported on the implementation of the works.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on tasks to be undertaken by respective departments and cooperation with local people in working for perpetual existence of Inlay Lake.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected the dairy cow farm of U Sai Yee at Bawritha Village in Nyaungshwe Township. Owner U Sai Yee explained the breeding of poultry and fish.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions. Later, the Secretary-2 and party went to Shwenyaung in Taunggyi Township, where they inspected Tetchaung Poultry Farm.

At Tetchaung Poultry Farm, over 70,000 poultry are being raised. Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met with secretaries and executives of Taunggyi District and Township USDAs at Panglong Yeiktha in Taunggyi in the evening. Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung also went to Taunggyi Education College in the evening, and met with education officers of Shan State and townships, heads of high schools and middle schools, the principal of Taunggyi Education College and staff and trainees of courses opened at the college. The deputy minister gave instructions on educational matters.


(3) Secretary-1 welcomes United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

Yangon, 15 Oct - At the invitation of Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Madame Sadako Ogata arrived here by air this evening for two-day visit in Myanmar.

She was welcomed at the airport by Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Chief of Mission Mr Canh Nguyen-Tang of the UNHCR Office in Yangon, and other officials.

Accompanied by Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Madame Sadako Ogata and party proceeded to the Inya Kantha State House.

After greeting Madame Sadako Ogata, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt left the Inya Kantha State House. Madame Sadako Ogata was accompanied by Director of the Bureau for Asia and the Pacific Mr Francois Fouinal and Special Adviser to the High Commissioner Ms Misako Kaji.

Secretary-1 hosts dinner in honour of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees 

YANGON, 15 Oct- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt hosted a dinner in honour of visiting United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Madame Sadako Ogata and party at the Karaweik Palace today. Also present at the dinner were ministers, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, departmental heads, Chief of Mission Mr Canh Nguyen-Tang of the UNHCR Office in Yangon, and special guests.


(4) Secretary-1 inspects all-round construction work on Mindhamma Hill

YANGON, 15 Oct-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township this afternoon.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed by Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, the deputy ministers, the vice-mayor, departmental heads and officials. Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko reported on construction of Gandhakuti Kyaungdaw, retaining wall and southern and northern stairways, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Nyi Hla Nge on all-round construction on Mindhamma Hill, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa on cash donation, Deputy Chief Engineer (Architect) of Public Works U Aung Kyee Myint on construction of stairways, stone sculptor U Taw Taw on carving of the image and Myanmar architect U Ohn Tin on Myanmar artistic works at Gandhakuti Kyaungdaw and the stairways. The Secretary-1 then gave instructions on carving of the image and completion of the image in time. The Secretary-1 later inspected construction work on Mindhamma Hill.


(5)  Secretary-1 attends opening of multimedia teaching centre in Hlaing Township

YANGON, 15 Oct-A ceremony to open multimedia teaching centre of No 1 Basic Education High School, Hlaing Township in Yangon Division was held at the school at 11 am today, with an opening address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, officials, Headmaster U Chit Hlaing and teachers and students. Headmaster U Chit Hlaing and Chairman of SBT U Pyone Cho cut the ribbon to open the multimedia teaching centre. Then, the Secretary-1 pressed the button to open the signboard of the teaching centre.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected computer application room, computer aided instruction room, audio visual teaching centre, study room, arts room, domestic science room, music room and watched the skills demonstrated by the students. Then, the opening ceremony was held at the assembly hall of the school.

Headmaster U Chit Hlaing said according to the education promoting programme and under the guidance of Ministry of Education, the multimedia teaching centre of the No 1 BEHS, Hlaing was opened for the students to have more advanced teaching aids, and modern teaching centres will be set up with the help of SBT, PTA, well-wishers and teachers. Chairman of SBT U Pyone Cho explained the efforts made for the emergence of the centre.

Then, the Secretary-1 presented videotapes on teaching aid for the school to Headmaster U Chit Hlaing. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 delivered a speech and spoke words of thanks on behalf of the State to local authorities, members of SBT, parents, old students, well-wishers for their help to open the teaching centre. After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and party, together with members of SBT and PTA, headmasters, teachers and students had photos taken.

Ambassador U San Thein accredited to Poland

YANGON, 16 Oct-The Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar has appointed U San Thein, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Federal Republic of Germany, concurrently as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Republic of Poland.

Myanmar tourism delegation leaves for Thailand
 
YANGON, 15 Oct-A Myanmar tourism delegation led by Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism left here for Thailand by air this morning to hold the " Third Myanma Tourism Exhibition " sponsored by the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism at Baiyoke Sky Hotel in Bangkok from 16 to 19 October for the development of Myanma Tourism Industry.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, officials, family members and relatives of the delegates. The delegation comprises General Manager U Tin Htay, Directors Daw Nyunt Nyunt Than and Lt-Col Sein Phoe, Deputy Director U Kaung Htut and branch-in-charge Daw Khin May Oo of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism and 100 entrepreneurs of hotels, travel agencies and airlines.

Deputy Minister leaves for India

YANGON, 15 Oct-At the invitation of Secretary of Ministry of External Affairs of India Mr Lalit Mansingh, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win left here for New Delhi, India, by air this afternoon to attend secretary level bilateral talks.

The deputy minister was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Ahmad Rahim, Charge d' Affairs of the Indian Embassy Mr Ashok Tomar and officials. On his way back from New Delhi, he will visit Bangladesh as the special envoy of the Government of the Union of Myanmar on 20 October. Deputy Director-General of Political Department of Ministry of Foreign Affairs U Thaung Tun and Head of Branch 1 Daw Khin Thidar Aye accompanied the deputy minister.

Delegation arrives to attend ASEAN Railway GMs' Conference

YANGON, 15 Oct- A seven-member delegation led by Vice Transport Minister Dr Dao Dinh Binh of Vietnam arrived here by air this evening to attend the 22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers' Conference in Myanmar. They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin and departmental heads and officials of the Vietnamese Embassy.

Entrepreneurs to attend GBOC-200

YANGON, 15 Oct- A 32-member delegation led by Executive Committee members U Hla Myint and U Than Htay of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry left here by air yesterday evening to attend the (Global Business Opportunities Convention) GBOC-2000 to be held in Osaka, Japan, from 16 to 19 October. The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Vice-President of UMFCCI U Htein Win, General Secretary U Zaw Min Win and officials.

Extended prawn breeding work inspected

YANGON, 15 Oct-Chairman of Extended Prawn Breeding and Production Committee Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Vice-Chairman Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and officials arrived at extended prawn breeding zone in Kyauktan Township this morning.

Minister Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and party inspected construction of shrimp fry farm of Advance Sea Food Co and breeding ponds and gave instructions. The chairman of the committee and party proceeded to the site of inland deep sea water prawn breeding project of United Fisheries Enterprise.

They inspected digging of ponds with the use of machinery and work of King Fisheries. Extended Prawn Breeding and Production Committee met entrepreneurs at Kyauktan Township Fisheries Department Office. They discussed work, shrimp fry, power supply and machinery. Entrepreneurs from 10 companies reported on breeding of prawn. Ministers Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and Joint Secretary of the Committee Deputy Director-General of Fisheries Department U Hla Win took part in the discussions.


(7) Provisions offered to monasteries in Thakayta, Dagon Myothit (North) Townships

YANGON, 15 Oct- Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers offered provisions to Hinthada Atwin Padamya, Aungthabye Tawya, Tipitaka Lankara, Hsin-byutaung, Shwesayan, Htandaw, Aungzeya Thiri, Hmangin, Aungsetkya Mogok, Natmauk, Zaytawun, Thuseiktalankara, Palikari and Abhayayama monasteries in Thakayta Township this morning. Present at the ceremony held at Pobbayon Prayer Hall within the precinct of Maha Bodhi Swedawshin Pagoda, members of the Sangha, nuns, the Chief Justice, deputy ministers, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, district and township authorities, officials and well-wishers.

The Chief Justice, the deputy ministers, the senior military officers and well-wishers donated provisions to the Sayadaws. Next, well-wishers donated provisions to Sayadaws and K 767,000 to the funds of monasteries to officials. Similarly, Tatmadaw families and well-wishers presented provisions to Mohnyin Theingi, Mingala Aye, Dhammagonyi, Aungmye Yadana, Maha Gandayon, Mingalayama and Aungchantha monasteries at the Dhammayon of Pyigyichantha Maha Zedi in Dagon Myothit (North) Township this morning.

The congregation received the Five Precepts from Presiding Nayaka of Mingalayama Pariyatti Monastery Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vayama. Senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence donated provisions to members of the Sangha. Well-wishers and departments offered provisions to Sayadaws and K 573,500 to officials.


(8) Myanmar delegation attends Sixth ASEAN Information Ministers Meeting in Hanoi

YANGON, 15 Oct-The Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein attended the Sixth ASEAN Information Ministers Meeting held in Hanoi, Vietnam, from 12 to 13 October.

Also present were Information Ministers from ASEAN countries, Deputy Ministers, ambassadors, the ASEAN Secretary-General, officials of ASEAN Secretariat and observers from Vietnam. Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Manh Cam delivered a speech and formally opened the meeting.

Establishment of ASEAN satellite channel, latest development on regional and national ASEAN website and promotion of its efficiency, regular holding of ASEAN forum on Internet, continued implementation of information sector of Hanoi Plan of Action, effective use of media for disseminating of ASEAN news and programmes in and outside the region were discussed and future tasks were also laid down.

A Memorandum of Understanding on National Communication Plan to be carried out by ASEAN nations was then signed. On 13 October, ASEAN Information Ministers paid a courtesy call on President of Vietnam Mr Tran Duc Luong.

International White Cane Day observed

YANGON, 15 Oct - Yangon Mayor's Trophy Walking Race for the Blind was held to mark the International White Cane Day in front of People's Square this morning. Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay formally opened the race.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, officials and Development Associations, the chairman and officials of the committee for organizing the walking race, contestants and officials. Then, a ceremony to give away prizes to winners of the walking race was held on the first floor of the City Hall. The vice-mayor spoke on the occasion and presented gifts to those participating in the race. The vice-mayor also presented sun-glasses to blind children.

Myanmar archers win gold

YANGON, 15 Oct-Myanmar men and women archers won gold medals in International Malaysia Championship Invitational Archery Competition in Kuala Lumpur today. Myanmar men's archery team includes Nyi Nyi Tun, Win Min Zaw and Nan Aung and women's team comprises Thi Thi Win, Thin Thin Khaing, Khin Than Nwe and Myat Thuzar. In men's team event, Myanmar stood first, Thialand second and the Philippines third. In women's team event, Myanmar was first, Vietnam second and Malaysia third. Victorious archers will arrive back here on 16 October.


(10) 34 Pale NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 15 Oct-Thirty-four members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pale Township, Sagaing Division. Thirty-four members of Pale Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pale Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 5 April 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
