(1) General Maung Aye attends opening of Sasana Beikmandaw in Loikaw, Nanacari Nunnery in Phekhon

YANGON, 14 Oct-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, accompanied by Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, the ministers, the director-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office and officials, yesterday left here for Loikaw by Tatmadaw flight and arrived there at 8.15 am.

A ceremony to open Sasana Beikmandaw built in the precincts of Myonan Pagoda in Loikaw was held at the Beikmandaw yesterday. Present on the occasion were General Maung Aye, members of Kayah State Peace and Development Council, departmental officials of Loikaw District and Township, military officers of Loikaw Station, regional national race leaders, others associations and local people numbering 12,000.

Next, the Secretary-2 and Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo formally opened the Sasana Beikmandaw. At 9 am, General Maung Aye formally unveiled the stone plaque of the Beikmandaw.

He then sprinkled scented water on the stone plaque. Next, A ceremony to share merits for donation of Sasana Beikmandaw was held at the Beikmandaw. Congregation received the Five Precepts from member of the Central Working Committee of the Sangha Presiding Sayadaw of Shwedaung Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Loikaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Pannasami. The Sayadaw and members of the Sangha recited parittas.

Chairman of Kayah State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Nyunt Hlaing accepted the donations. General Maung Aye presented offertories to member of the Central Working Committee of the Sangha Presiding Sayadaw of Shwedaung Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Loikaw.

The Secretary-2 and party, national race leaders, well wishers and officials offered alms to 26 Sayadaws and members of the Sangha of monasteries in Loikaw Township. Member of the State Central Working Committee of Sangha Presiding Sayadaw of Shwedaung Pariyatti Sarthintaik of Loikaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Pannasami delivered a sermon.

Then, the General and party shared merits gained for good deeds, and performed a ritual of golden and silver showers. The General and party inspected Sasana Beikman-dawgyi and paid homage to Buddha images inside the Beikmandawgyi.

The General and party left Loikaw, Kayah State, for Pekhon, Shan State, by helicopter at 11.30 AM

The General and party attended the opening ceremony of Nyanasari Nunnery Sarthintaik. The ceremony was attended by departmental officials of Pekhon Township, governmental employees, well wishers, nuns and guests.

Brig-Gen Thura Sein Thaung formally opened the Sarthintaik. Then a merit-sharing ceremony for the Sarthintaik was held at the lecture hall. The General and party and the congregation received the Five Precepts from Chairman of Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw of Nattaw Kyaung Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Pandava.

Next, the General offered alms to the Sayadaw of Nattaw Kyaung. The Secretary-2 and party also offered alms to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha. Donations made to Nyanasari Nunnery Sarthintaik included K 114,000.

After that, the Sayadaw of Nattaw Kyaung delivered a sermon. Then, the General and party and well wishers shared merits gained for good deeds. After the ceremony, the General and party inspected Pekhon. In the afternoon, the General and party went to Taunggyi by helicopter.

The Secretary-2, who accompanied the General to Taunggyi, together with officials, inspected Pyiphyo Poultry Farm in Kyaungyisu Ward. Owner U Maung Hla reported on the raising of over 10,000 poultry, sale and distribution of eggs. The Secretary-2 gave instructions.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party inspected private poultry farms in Chauk-mile Village, Nansi Village-tract, Taunggyi Township. Next, the Secretary-2 and party inspected vegetable plantations set up by Taunggyi Township Development Affairs Committee by the side of Taunggyi-Hopong Road.

In the evening, the Secretary-2 and party visited the vineyard of Myanma Agriculture Service in Htonbo Farm, Taunggyi Township. Foreign strains of grapevine appropriate with regional weather conditions have been grown on the five-acre experimental farm.

Altogether 15,000 grapevines have been grown there. If the farm is successful, grapes will be sold locally. The Secretary-2 and party arrived at Nawnghkio at 5.15 PM and inspected the foreign strain grape vineyard of Eiksitan Agricultural Group. The manager of the farm reported on the cultivation of grapevines on 5.4 acres of land. The Secretary-2 gave instructions. Eiksitan Agricultural Group has got a permit to reclaim fallow and virgin land in Hsihseng and is undertaking agricultural work.


(2) Cash donations to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni exceed K 77m

YANGON, 14 Oct - Mindhamma Hill on Mindhamma Road in Insein Township where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Buddha Image is being carved for public obeisance today saw devotees and visitors including tourists from dawn to dusk. Construction works continued for Gandhakuti Kyaungdawgyi where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Buddha Image will be placed for public obeisance, the northern stairway and the retaining wall on the southern side of the hill.

Preparatory works for construction of the southern stairway began today. Sculptor U Taw Taw and sons also continued carving the image from 7 am to 10 PM. Myanmar architect U Ohn Tin and group carried out carving and painting of other statues. The wut associations recited parittas and chanted poems extolling the virtues of the Lord Buddha, the Pathan scriptures, Dhammacakka Sutta, Anatta Lakkhana Sutta, Dharana Paritta and other parittas.

Cash donated towards the funds of the pagoda from 5 August till today has amounted to over K-77.9 million. The donation centre is open on the hill from 7 am to 9 PM every day.


(3) Myanmar information delegation arrives back

YANGON, 14 Oct-A Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein arrived back here by air this evening after attending the Sixth ASEAN Information Ministers Meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam, on 12 and 13 October.

The delegation was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry, officials and families of the delegation members. The members of the delegation' Lt-Col Tin Oo of the Ministry of Defence, Director U Win Kyi, Manager U Ra Khant and Staff Officer U Ye Linn of the Ministry of Information also arrived back on the same flight.


(4) Minster inspects banking services in Mandalay

YANGON, 14 Oct-Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, accompanied by Director-General U Chit Swe of Internal Revenue Department, Managing Director Col Thein Lwin of Myanmar Insurance and officials met with officials and government employees of departments under the ministry from Mandalay Division, Sagaing Division and Pyin Oo Lwin District at the meeting hall of head of division internal revenue department office in Mandalay yesterday morning.

First, departmental officials reported to the minister on progress of work and the minister fulfilled the needs. Then, the minister elaborated on objectives of the State, projects being implemented for the development of the country, State's policies for the development of economy and advancements. Then, he urged the employees to strive for exceeding targeted work. Afterwards, the minister and party proceeded to Central Bank of Myanmar (Upper Myanmar Monetary Branch) and Myanma Economic Bank and Myanmar Investment and Trading Bank. He inspected work of the banks, fulfilled the needs and gave instructions on performing tasks effectively to meet the needs of the people.

Later, Secretary of Union Solidarity and Development Association (Central) Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met with executive committee members and organizers of division, district and township USDAs and trainees of management course 6/2000 at the office of Maha Aungmyay Township USDA. Secretary of Maha Aungmyay Township USDA U Than Tun Oo reported to him on progress of work and matters related to management course for executives and he gave necessary instructions. Then, he elaborated on matters related to establishment, organization, planning of the association, future tasks laid down by the 2000 Annual General Meeting of USDA and courses being opened for increasing quality of members.

Then, Secretary U Khin Maung Thein donated cash to Secretary of Maha Aungmyay Township USDA U Than Tun Oo for training courses of USDA. U Than Tun Oo presented 2,000 membership application forms of wards in the township to Secretary U Khin Maung Thein. Later, trainees of multiplier management course 6/2000 for executive committee members Maung Kyaw Kyaw, Ma Yin Yin Myo and Mg Aung Than Oo expressed thanks. Secretary Minister U Khin Maung Thein cordially greeted with the trainees.


(5) Minister inspects ancient pagodas

YANGON, 14 Oct-Minister for Culture U Win Sein, accompanied by officials of Archaeology Department, yesterday arrived at Maha Thakyaranthi Kyauktawgyi Pagoda at Taungthaman Village, Amarapura Township, and inspected renovation of wall paintings at Gandakuti Pagoda. He gave instructions on renovation tasks. Then, he proceeded to TadaU Township and inspected the completed renovation of pagoda Nos 230 and 231, prayer hall and groups of Yadana Hsimi Pagoda in ancient Inwa City and the wall of Inwa. The minister gave instructions on maintenance of the wall.

At Hsinkyon Village in ancient Inwa City, he paid homage to Maha Lawka Tharaphu Pagoda built by King Taninganwe in 1092 ME and gave instructions. The minister also inspected maintenance of Bagaya Monastery and the archway of the ancient Inwa.

Minister inspects progress in construction of Thabbyinyu Stupa

YANGON, 14 Oct- Chairman of the Leading Committee for Construction of Thabbyinyu Stupa Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Deputy Minister for Industry-2 Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw and Managing Director U Ye Tun of Myanma Industrial Construction Industries, arrived at the construction site of the stupa at 4 PM today.

Deputy Minister Thura U Thuang Lwin reported to the minister on fund-raising for construction of the stupa and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko on progress of the construction work and future tasks. The minister gave necessary instructions. Then, the minister and party inspected construction site of the stupa and left there at 6 PM.

ITBMU students visit Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image

YANGON, 14 Oct-Members of the Sangha, nuns and, laity who are studying at Inter- national Theravada Buddhist Missionary University, together with Pro-rector (Teaching) of ITBMU Bhaddanta Neminda, Pro-rector (Admin) Dr Hla Pe and officials, paid a visit to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image which is to be kept on Mindhamma Hill, Mindhamma Street, Insein Township, at 7.45 am today.

At the briefing hall, Myanmar Historian Professor Dr Khin Maung Nyunt explained to the students the background history of the Image, conveyance of to Image from Sakyin Hill Yadana Jetty, Madaya Township, Mandalay Division, to Gyogon Yadana Jetty, Insein Township, Yangon Division, along the Ayeyawady River by Thonlutaukpa Yadana Shwephaungdawgyi (barge) and from Gyogon Yadana Jetty onto Mindhamma Hill by Yadana Natpan Yahta (wagon) with audio visual aids.  Then, Historian Profess; Dr Khin Maung Nyunt replied the queries raised by the students.

Afterwards, the students paid obeisance to the Image, and were briefed on facts about carving the Image by Sculptor U Taw Taw and Myanmar handicraft technician U Ohn Tin and officials. They later had a photo taken in front of the Image, donated cash for all-round construction of Mindhamma Hill and left there later in the morning.

Tatmadaw families donate provisions to monasteries in Mayangon Township

YANGON, 14 Oct- Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers donated provisions to monasteries in Mayangon Township this morning. Present on the occasion were Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, senior military officers of Ministry of Defence, officials and well-wishers.

A ceremony to donate provisions to KanU Zaytawun, Kaytumadi, Yadana Beikman, NanU and Paukzedi monasteries in Mayangon Township by families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers was held at KanU Zaytawun Monastery this morning.

The congregation received the Five Precepts from Presiding Nayaka of KanU Zaytawun Monastery Agga Maha Ganthavaaka Pandita Bhaddanta Nandasamibhivamsa.

Then, well-wishers donated provisions to Sayadaws and K 391,000 to the funds of monasteries through officials. Similarly, Tatmadaw families and local people donated provisions to Ariya Mandaing, Pyithsimayon, Thukhakari, Nyaungthonbin, Bawana Nuyawgayama, Minkyaung, Gandayon and 8th Mile Masoeyein monasteries.

At Ariya Mandaing Monastery, Camp Commandant of the Ministry of Defence Brig-Gen Hla Aung Thein, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thien and Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe offered rice donated by Tatmadaw families to the presiding Nayaka Sayadaw of the monastery. Likewise, well-wishers donated provisions to the Sayadaws and K 400,000 towards the funds of these monasteries to Maj-Gen Myint Swe (Air), Captain Soe Thein (Navy) and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan.

Deputy Minister arrives back from Thailand

YANGON, 14 Oct-Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung and party, after attending the Conference of ASEAN Nations on Combating Drugs in 2015 held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 11 to 13 October, arrived back here by air this morning. They were welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Col Soe Win, directors-general of departments and officials.


(7) Third Mon State Products Exhibition and Market Festival opens

YANGON  14 Oct- A ceremony to open the Third Mon State Products Exhibition and Market Festival was held at modern four-storey Yadana Market in Mawlamyine on 11 September.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun, Secretary of Mon State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Maw Maw, departmental officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, teachers, students and guests. Chairman of Mawlamyine District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thaw Zin and Chairman of Smart Business Group Co Ltd U Win Myint formally opened the exhibition and market festival. Then, Chairman U Win Myint reported on the holding of the exhibition, and Lt-Col Thaw Zin gave a speech. Afterwards, the commander, the deputy minister and guests viewed the booths at the exhibition.

Archery team wins gold medals

YANGON, 14 Oct- Myanma archers of Myanmar Archery Team won gold, silver and bronze medals in Malaysia International Championship Shield Archery Competition being held in Kualalumpur, Malaysia

A total of four gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals, were won in the competitions. Thin Thin Khaing won three gold medals and one bronze medal, Thi Thi Win one gold medal and a bronze medal and Myat Thu Zar Myint two silver medals in women's events.

Nyi Nyi Tun won one silver medal in the event for men. Altogether 62 archers from Myanmar, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Katar, Mongolia and Hongkong are taking part in the competition.

Yangon City volleyball team emerges champion

YANGON, 14 Oct - Yangon City volleyball team beat Shahalam City volleyball team of Malaysia 25:19, 25:16 and 25:21 in the semi-final of 2000 Shahalam Asia Inter-City Volleyball Invitation yesterday held in Silinga Province of Malaysia. In the final, Yangon City volleyball team beat Malaysia Volleyball Association team 25:15, 25:19 and 25:13 this evening.

Kachin State under-17 soccer team honoured

YANGON, 14 Oct- Kachin State under-17 soccer team won the championship shield in the year 2000 Inter-State/Division Soccer Tournament and arrived back at Myitkyina on 9 October. The Kachin State soccer team was welcomed back in Myitkyina by Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and wife, other associations and local people totalling over 30,000. In the evening, dinner was host in honour of the team on the lawns in front of Ayeya-1 Yeiktha in Myitkyina. Head of Kachin State Sports and Physical Education Department U Tin Maung Yi and Best Striker Award and Best Player Award winner Maung Lwin Zaw Zaw Han handed over the championship shield to the commander. Officials reported on efforts made for achieving the success of the tournament. The commander then presented prizes to the winners. Later, trainee teachers of Myitkyina Education College presented songs to the audience.


(9)  52 Ngazun Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 14 Oct - Fifty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ngazun Township, Mandalay Division. Fifty-two members of Ngazun Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ngazun Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 24 June 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
