(1)  Pyitaungtan Tawya Kyaung Rice-Offering Association holds l9th rice-offering ceremony

YANGON, 7 Oct-The 19th ceremony to offer rice to monasteries on Pyay hills, organized by Pyitaungtan Tawya Kyaung Rice-Offering Association, was held ,at Thirikhitta Thireindara Sasana Beikman in Pyay, Bago Division, this afternoon.

Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt supplicated on religious affairs.  The ceremony was graced by the presence of State Ovadacariya Sayadaws, member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, member Sayadaws of the State Central Working Committee of the Sangha, member Sayadaws of Divisional Working Committee of the Sangha, Patron Sayadaws of the rice offering association, Sayadaws, member Sayadaws of Township Working Committee of the Sangha and nuns. The Secretary- 1 and party, well-wishers ant the congregation received the Five Precepts from State Ovadacariya Sayadaw Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Vilasacara of Sagataung Kyaungtaik of Pyay.  Religious buildings are being renovated, new ones built and donated, robes and provisions offered, trust funds set up. Robes and provisions are also being donated to nuns. Then, Chairman of the Association U Khin Maung Tint reported on the functions of the association.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party offered alms and rice to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha. Ovadacariya of the Association Joint Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw of Zawtikayon Pali Tekkatho Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kundalajoti delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits. Then, the Secretary-l and party performed the rituals of golden and silver showers.

At the 19th rice-offering ceremony, the State Peace and Development Council donated 448 bags of rice, families of the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) 448 bags of rice and Yangon City Development Committee 630 bags of rice. The directorates under the  Ministry of Defence, Military Commands, LIDs, local Peace and Development Councils, ministries, departments, factories, entrepreneurs and well-wishers donated 4,265 bags of rice and K 3,739,000.

Then, the Secretary- 1 supplicated on religious affairs. He said that knowing that the rice-offering association is attending to the needs of Sayadaws, members-of the Sangha and nuns who are residing along Pyay mountain ranges, the families of the Tatmadaw ( Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers have been cooperating with the association since 1991. It would be the tenth time rice was to be offered to Sayadaws, members of the Sangha and nuns.


(2) Over 300 basic education high schools open multimedia teaching centres, more ready to follow suit

YANGON, 7 Oct-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by ministers, the Chief of Stiff (Air), deputy ministers, the vice-mayor, the director-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads and officials, left here by air yesterday morning and arrived at Pyay, Bago Division, at 12.55 PM.

The Secretary-l and party, accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye, proceeded to Youth Nurturing Camp (Shwepyitha) in Wethtigan Village, Pyay Township, Bago Division.  At Shwepyitha Hall, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing reported to the Secretary-1 on tasks of the Camp (Shwepyitha) being undertaken. Then, Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win reported on vocational training’s for spiritual and physical development of drug addicts, water supply, land reclamation, agriculture and livestock breeding, training courses and staff welfare programme. The ministers and departmental heads gave supplementary reports.  After hearing the reports, the Secretary-l attended to their needs and urged officials of the respective ministries to undertake the tasks with a view to achieving the aims of the centre. Next, the Secretary-l met trainees at the hall of the camp and gave instructions.

Then, the Secretary-1 inspected training programmes on operating lathes, repairing machines and electrical appliances and welding at the workshop. After that, the Secretary-1 and party arrived at North Nawin Darn in Pyay Township. In the briefing hall, the Secretary-l heard reports on facts of North Nawin Dam Project, annual rainfall in the watershed area, annual water storage capacity of the darn and water supply, kinds of crops including summer and monsoon paddy and sown acreage in the irrigated area of Bago Division western area by Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint and officials.  Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye gave a supplementary report. Then, the Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party went to South Nawin Dam in Paukkhaung Township.

In the briefing hall, Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Deputy Minister U Ohn Myint and officials reported to the Secretary-l on facts of South Nawin Dam Project, annual rainfall in the watershed area, annual water storage capacity of the dam and water supply, cultivation of crops in the irrigated area and arrangements for extension of Special Zone (sugarcane-sesame).

The Secretary-1 gave instructions on the extending of sown acreage of monsoon and summer paddy and cold season crops on the basis of rainfall and the low of water into the dam. At Paungde Basic Education High School, Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee thc Secretary-1 attended the opening ceremony of multimedia teaching center of the school at 5 PM.

Present on the occasion were Maj-Gen Tin Aye, ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), deputy ministers, thc vice mayor, the director of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, officials, USDA members, social associations, well-wishers, officials of No 1 Basic Education Department, the Township Education Officer, school heads, members of School Board of Trustees and Parent-Teacher Association, Headmaster U Myint Sein, teachers and students. Headmaster U Myint Sein and Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Than formally opened the multimedia teaching centre of Paungde Township BEHS.

Then, Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee the Secretary-l pressed the button to unveil the signboard of multimedia teaching centre. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected the prayer room the audio visual media, the language lab, the computer aided media, the visual presenter, the printed media, the photo and art room, the domestic science and handicraft room and thc music room and skills of the students. The opening ceremony of the centre of the school was the held  Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented teaching aid tape to Headmaster U Myint Sein. Well-wishers presented cash for the school. In his address, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt thanked the local authorities, members of the School Board of Trustees, parents, teachers and wellwishers for their efforts for successfully opening the multimedia teaching centre at Paungde Basic Education High School. Due to cooperation of wellwishers and parents to implementation of the education promotion programme, over 300 basic education high schools have been opening multimedia teaching centres one after another contiguously, and there are more schools getting ready to follow suit.

Afterwards, the Secretary-l and party had documentary photos together taken with members of the School Board of Trustees, PTA members, cash donors, the Headmaster.  They later return to Pyay and stopped for the night at Khittaya Guest House.  The secretary-1 and party together with Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye, went to Pyay to Bago Division by car, and arrived at Shwedaung at 8.15 am today. Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l Lt Gen Khin Nyunt attended and addressed the opening ceremony of the multimedia teaching centre of the basic education high school in Shwedaung Bago Division.  Headmistress Daw Tin Tin Win and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Khin Maung Than formally opened the multimedia teaching centre. The Secretary-l formally unveiled the signboard of the centre.

Afterwards, the Secretary-l and party inspected the computer-aided instruction mom, the computer application and e-mail room, the electronic media (video system) room, the electronic media (Language lab) room, the visual presenter room, the printed media (reading corner) room, the domestic science room, the handicraft room, the painting room, the photo and wall newspaper room and the music and art room. Later, the ceremony to mark the opening of the multimedia teaching centre was held in the school hall.

Next, the Secretary-l presented video tapes for the school to Headmistress Daw Tin Tin Win .Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and Commander Maj- Gen Tin Aye accepted donations for the wellwishers. The Secretary-l and party had the photo taken together with members of the School Board of Trustees, members of PTA, teachers and students.  The Secretary-l and parry inspected model paddy field in Kokwinsin Village in Shwedaung Township.

The Secretary-l and party proceeded to historic Shwebontha Muni Pagoda in Padaung Township where they were welcomed by members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel, members of USDA, social organizations and Pagoda Board of Trustees. The Secretary-l and party paid obeisance to Buddha images. They then visited the Shwebontha Muni Pagoda.  The Secretary-l accepted the donations for the willwishers.. Assistant Engineer U Than Aye of No 1 Farm Machinery Factory reported on renovation of Aungmyin Zeya Pagoda in Taungdwingyi. The Secretary1 then gave instructions.

The Secretary-l supplicated on religious matters at the ceremony to donate provisions to Pyay .Taungdan Tawya Kyaungs at Thiri Khitta Thireindhara Sasana Beihnandaw in Pyay this afternoon.  The Secretary-l paid homage to Presiding Patron of Yadana Meanaung Tawya Kyaungtaik Kaba Shweyinaye Sayadaw Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajodka Bhaddanta Vijjabala and presented offertories to him.  Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party arrived back here in the evening. Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung met division and township education officers, the principal of education college and trainees of education college and explained education promotion programmes, teachership course and management affairs. Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo yesterday visited the Township Hospital in Pyay. He also met the Medical Superintendent of the hospital and staff


(3) Farmers urged to strive to boost paddy production applying agri high-tech, chemical fertilizers

YANGON, 7 Oct-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected agriculture, livestock and construction projects in Yangon Division today.  He was accompanied on his tour by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister at the Office of Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments.

They attended the ceremony of harvesting monsoon paddy on sample plots of the model plot near Targwa Village in Taikkyi Township on Yangon-Pyay Road this morning.

Also present among the officials and departmental heads were divisional agricultural supervisory committee members, departmental personnel of Taikkyi, Hmawby, Htantabin and Hlegu townships and farmers. At the ceremony, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung explained the projects for boosting production of crops and cultivation of paddy on model plots with the application of high technology by Myanma Agriculture Service and private companies.

The Secretary-2 opened the harvesting ceremony by reaping the Hmawby-hsan paddy plants on the designated sample plots of the model farm with the golden scythe.  Then farmers started reaping on their respective sample plots. Meanwhile, the Secretary-2 and party viewed the documentary photos on preparations for cultivation of monsoon paddy with the use of modern technology on model plots, pesticides, sample seeds and fruits. Vice-President of CP Group Mr Vichai explained the agriculture and livestock breeding sectors in Myanmar.  Then, some farmers of Taikkyi and Hmawby Townships spoke of successful cultivation of paddy on model plots with the proper use of chemical fertilizers.

Later, the Secretary-2, the Commander and the deputy minister presented the first, second and third prizes to the farmers who could estimate the paddy yield most approximately, those who could best harvest the plots and those for having reaped the stalk with maximum number of paddy seeds. Managing Director of Myanma Agriculture Service U Tun Than and officials presented awards to the best nine farmers of high-tech paddy project farms.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than thanked the local and foreign private organizations for providing assistance, and spoke of the need for service personnel of Yangon Division and farmers to strive their best for their interest as well as in the interest of the nation. Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun spoke of the need to carry out livestock projects together with the agriculture projects.  Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party proceeded to Tawlati Village. They visited Tawlati Monastery and paid obeisance to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Indaka and presented offertories.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on improvement of roads linking nearby villages, the health and education sectors of the village. Then, on their way to Bawlei River Bridge (Yay-bawthaung), the Secretary-2 and party inspected paddy fields and conditions of the wetlands. At the bridge, they were welcomed by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint Thein and officials.
At the bridge construction project office, departmental officials reported to the Secretary-2 on the tasks to fulfil the requirements of the education and health sectors in Tawlati Village. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than gave instructions on endeavours for regional development.  Next, Head of Division Water Resources Utilization Department U Myint Soe reported on Thabyedan Water Pumping Project which will irrigate 5,000 acres in Taikkyi Township, Yaybawthoung Water Pumping Project which will irrigate 3,000 acres in Htantabin Township and Gyogon Water Pumping Project which will irrigate 5,000 acres in Htantabin Township. The Commander gave supplementary report. Nine small-scale water pumping projects were undertaken in Taikkyi and Htantabin Townships.
Out of 17, three water pumping projects are being undertaken as the first priority. The projects will be useful for cultivation of summer paddy. The Secretary-2 fulfilled the requirements. He said Bawle River Bridge (Myo-chaung) and Yaybawthoung Bridge were built for development of Aikalaung, Bawle, Tetthitkyun regions. He spoke of the need to make efforts for boosting production and regional development after realizing the goodwill and endeavours of the government. The Secretary-2 inspected completed Bawle River Bridge (Yaybawthoung).

The Secretary-2 and party inspected hatchery at a poultry farm on Pawdawmu Pagoda Road in Hmawby Township. They inspected poultry farms. The Secretary-2 and party inspected experimental plantation of Japanese flowers of Green Leaf Co Ltd on Boe Boe Gyi Street in Hmawby.


(4) Minister arrived back from ASEAN meeting

YANGON, 7 Oct-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe arrived back here by air this afternoon after attending the Sixth ASEAN Transport Ministers Meeting in Brunei, on 4 and 5 October.  He was welcomed back at Yangon Intentional Airport by Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Ambassador of Brunei Mr Pengiran Dato Paduka Asmalee Ahmad and officials.

At the 6th ASEAN Trans port Minister’s Meeting, Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe delivered an address. He spoke about endeavours of Myanmar for implementation of transportation plans of ASEAN countries. Matter on construction of infrastructures and road, rail, water and air transportation in line with Hanoi Plan-of Action were discussed’ at the meeting. Construction of ASEAN highways as well as Singapore-Kunming railroad were also coordinated at the meeting.


(5) Mayor inspects extension of road

YANGON, 7 Oct-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, accompanied by officials, inspected extension work of Shwepyitha Bridge Road linking the approach road of the bridged across Hline River and Hlinethaya-Nyaungdon Road in Shwepyitha Township this afternoon. Engineers and officials reported on the progress of work. Mayor U Ko Lay gave necessary instructions and attended to their needs.


(6)Minister inspects Yangon Eastern Hospital

YANGON, 7 Oct-Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein inspected the Yangon Eastern Hospital this morning. Director-General of Health Department Dr Wan Maung and officials and Medical Superintendent of the Hospital Dr Nu Nu Tha reported on tasks being carried out at the hospital. The minister gave instructions to officials on carrying out the cost-sharing health care service in accordance with policies laid down by the State, and boosting funds for giving treatments to needy patients with free charges. Then, the minister visited the patients warded in the hospital and attended to their needs. Afterwards, he inspected sites where medical equipment provided by the State to upgrade the standard of hospitals, will be installed, and fulfilled the requirements.



(7)  Construction of Gandhakuti under way for Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image

YANGON, 7 Oct-Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on Mindhamma Hill on Min Dhamma Road in Insein Township was crowded with devotees including members of the Sangha and tourists from morning to evening.  Employees led by Deputy Superintending Engineer U Nyunt Maung San of Public Works carried out construction of Gandhakuti Kyaung taw in which the Image will be kept. They made preparations for construction of northern stairway and retaining wall in the south of the hill.  Stone sculptor U Taw Taw and sons are carving the Image daily. Wut associations of departments and townships recited religious verses on the hill. Donations by the public have amounted to K 69,505,730 from August 5 to date, The donation centre opens daily from 7 am to 9.


(8)Rice donated to monasteries, nunneries in Bahan Township

YANGON, 7 Oct- Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers offered provisions to monasteries and nunneries in Bahan Township this morning.  Present on the occasion were Minister for Hotels and Tourism Mai-Gen Saw Lwin, officials and well-wishers. A ceremony to donate provisions to Maha Aungmyebonsan, Wimalayama Nathryun, Danyawady, Aungban, Yadana Beikman, Mandalakanyon and Yatthazeyayon monasteries in Bahan Township by Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers was held at Maha Aungmyabon san Monastery this morning.

Vice-Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Pannindabhivamsa. Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, General Staff Officer (Grade-I) (Navy) (Mechanical) Cmdr Aung Min and Officiating Colonel General Staff (Mechanical) (Air) Lt-Col Ye Chit Pe offered rice donated by Tatmadaw families to the Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw. Then, well-wishers donated provisions to Sayadaws and K 473,000 to the funds monasteries to officials.


( 9) Minister inspects production of fluorescent cent tubes

YANGON, 7 Oct-Accompanied  by officials concerned, Minister for Industry-2 Maj- Gen Saw Lwin arrived at the electric bulb and fluorescent workshop of the electrical appliance and electronics factory under Myanma Machine Tool and Electrical Industries in Mayangon Township this morning.  Managing Director U Kyaw Win of MMTEI and officials reported on preparations being made for more production of quality fluorescent tubes. The minister and party proceeded to Workshop No 2 of Machine and Machine Tool Factory No 2 and inspected production work of the workshop. At the meeting hall of the workshop, Managing Director U Kyaw Win and officials reported on production condition of Machine and Machine Tool Factory to the minister, who left instructions on quality control and fire prevention measures.


(10)  Minister inspects Gems Emporium

YANGON, 7 Oct-Patron of Central Committee for Myanma Gems Emporium Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint arrived at Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium in progress at Myanma Gems Mart at 2.50 PM today. He was welcomed there by Chairman of the Central Committee Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Secretary of the Central Committee Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo and CEC members. The minister viewed sale of jade lots through competitive bidding system. A total of 20 lots of jade worth US $ 1,531,127 were sold through competitive bidding system from 9 am to 5.30 PM today. Fixed price gems and jade carvings realized US $ 1,238. Lots of raw jade will be on sale through competitive bidding system at 9 am on 8 October. To date, 620 local and foreign gems merchants have arrived here.


(11)  364 Ngazun Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 7 Oct-Thirty-six members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ngazun Township, Mandalay Division. Thirty-six members of Ngazun Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ngazun Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 21 April 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD .
