(1) MEC Chairman Secretary-1 attends multimedia teaching centres opening ceremonies in Kyaukpadaung, Thazi, Magway

Multimedia teaching centres being opened at schools to upgrade education standard to international level

YANGON, 3 Oct - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected the extension and building of modern guest houses at Popa Mountain Resort yesterday.

Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone and officials briefed the Secretary-1 on construction of the Conference Centre and modern guest houses at the resort, tasks so far completed in greening the eastern side of Mt Popa, water supply from the hot spa to Natkanlei Village, and building of a 19-mile-long 12-foot-wide Popa uphill road. Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt explained in detail the project to build 18-mile Hsongon-Natkanlei-Kyaukpon Road being undertaken by Kyauk-padaung Township Development Committee. The Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions.

Accompanied by member of the Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded from Popa Mountain Resort to Kyaukpadaung.

They later attended the opening ceremony of multi-media teaching centres at Kyaukpadaung Basic Education High School No-1. In his capacity as Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee, the Secretary-1 made a speech. Headmistress Daw Than Than Yin and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Sein Thaung formally opened Kyaukpadaung BEHS-1 multimedia teaching centres.

The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the signboard. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party went round in the prayer hall, printed media room, art room, control room, computer application room, audio visual room, domestic science room, fine arts and music room, and viewed the skills presented by the pupils. The opening ceremony of the multimedia teaching centres continued in the school's assembly hall later.

Headmistress Daw Than Than Yin explained the harmonious efforts of the members of the School Board of Trustees and PTA, and teachers for opening the multimedia teaching centres in keeping with the changing and developing system, so as to nurture the new generation student youths who would become reliable in the future.

Vice-Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Kan Hla also spoke about the endeavours for opening the multimedia teaching centres.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Minister U Than Aung accepted the donations by well-wisher.

The ceremony came to a close with Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt's speech. Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party took documentary photos together with members of the School Board of Trustees and PTA, wellwishers, donors, the Headmistress, teachers and pupils.

They next went to Natkanlei Camp of Popa Mountain Resort, Forest Department, in the township. The Secretary-1 heard reports on the work for greening of the eastern side of Mt Popa and water supply to Natkanlei Village, and inspected the work.

They proceeded to Thazi in Mandalay Division. They later attended the opening ceremony of multi-media teaching centres at Thazi Basic Education High School No-2. The Secretary-1 made a speech at the ceremony.

They viewed the dance performed by the pupils to the accompaniment of well-known national song "Myanma Gonyi" composed by Nandaw-shei Saya Tin and sung by Laybhati Ma Mya Yin.

Afterwards, Headmistress Daw Than Shwe and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Kan Nyunt formally opened multi-media teaching centres of Thazi BEHS-2. The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the signboard. Touring the computer skills room, language lab, audio visual room, computer-aided instruction room, presentation room, printed media room, art room, prayer hall, domestic science and handicraft training, and music room.

Afterwards, the ceremony to open multimedia teaching centre of No 2 BEHS in Thazi Township was held. Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Kan Nyunt explained efforts being made to open the centre, thanking the officials, parents, teachers and wellwishers. Headmistress Daw Than Shwe also gave a speech.

The Secretary-1 presented English-Myanmar dictionaries and the English-Myanmar dictionary in CD ROMs to Daw Than Shwe. The Secretary-1 delivered an address.

On arrival at Magway, Secretary-1 and party attended the ceremony to open multimedia teaching centre of No 2 BEHS in Magway Township. Headmaster U Khin Maung and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Ba Soe formally opened the centre. The Secretary-1 unveiled the signboard of the centre. The Secretary-1 and party then inspected the different sectors of the centre. Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented English-Myanmar dictionaries and the English-Myanmar dictionary in CD ROMs to U Khin Maung. The Secretary-1 then gave an address.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein inspected the 50-bed People's Hospital in Kyaukpadaung Township on 2 October. He inspected the surgery ward, ex-ray unit and other wards. He also inspected the People's Hospital in Thazi Township.


(2) 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Exhibition Committee meets

YANGON, 3 Oct - The 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Exhibition Committee held its meeting at the Directorate of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute this afternoon, addressed by Chairman of the Leading Organizing Committee of the 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Speaking on the occasion, Lt-Gen Tin Oo said the meeting was held to organize the exhibition at the designated time. The exhibition should reflect the ever changing conditions in striving to build a peaceful, pleasant, modern and developed nation. Innovative measures should be taken to win more interest of the people.

Secretary of the Committee Director of Defence Service Museum and Historical Research Institute Col Ye Htut reported to the meeting on organizing the previous exhibitions and plans to hold the present exhibition. Directors-general and managing directors of the respective departments and enterprises explained arrangements to open the ministry-wise booths. Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave suggestions.


(3) Minister for F&R meets Singaporean guests

YANGON, 3 Oct-Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met General Manager Mr Peter Frankl of Standard Chartered Bank, Singapore, and party at his office this afternoon. They discussed cooperation of mutual interest between the two countries. Also present was Governor U Kyaw Kyaw Maung of the Central Bank of Myanmar.


(4) Special Senior Officials Meeting for Transnational Crime concludes

YANGON, 3 Oct - The Special Senior Officials Meeting for Transnational Crime dealing with establishment of the ASEAN Centre was held at the Traders Hotel for the second and final day today.

Present at today's session were Deputy Director-General Mr Ahmad Mokhtar Selat of the ASEAN Secretariat and delegates, and the delegates of the ASEAN member nations, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar and Singapore. Discussions were focused on establishment of the ASEAN Centre for Transnational Crime. Meeting Chairman Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win made the closing address. Later, accompanied by MPF Chief of Staff Police Brig-Gen Zaw Win and officials, the delegates to the Special Senior Officials Meeting for Transnational Crime visited Myanma Gems Emporium Hall on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road.


(5) Gandhakuti Kyaungdaw for Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image under construction

YANGON, 3 Oct- Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on Mindhamma Hill on Mindhamma Road in Insein Township was crowded with members of the Sangha, nuns and devotees from morning to evening today. Employees of Public Works participated in the construction of Gandhakuti Kyaungdaw in which the Image will be kept. Preparations for construction of the northern stairway of the Image began yesterday. Stone sculptor U Taw Taw and sons are carving the Image daily. Wut associations of departments and townships recited religious verses on the hill. Donations by the public have amounted to K 67,180,330 from 5 August to date. The Fund-raising Unit opens from 7 am to 9 PM daily.


(6) Those who render assistance in fund-raising film show honoured

YANGON, 3 Oct-A ceremony to honour those who rendered assistance in the fund-raising film show aimed at paying respect to the aged of Myanmar Medical Association (Yangon) Women's Chapter was held at the hall of MMA on Theinbyu Street, here, this afternoon.

Present on the occasion were leading patron of MMA (Yangon) Women's Chapter Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, members of Panel of the Patrons, Chairperson of Women's Chapter Dr Daw Yi Yi Hla and executives and those who rendered assistance in the fund-raising film show. Secretary of WC Dr Daw Khin Mar Aye acted as master of ceremonies. First, Chairperson of WC Dr Daw Yi Yi Hla extended greetings and explained the purpose of the women's chapter, work being carried out for national, religious, education, health and social activities. Then, leading patron of MMA (Yangon) Women's Chapter Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented certificates of honour and gifts to those who rendered assistance in the fund-raising film show.


(7) Ministry of Information holds second four-monthly coord meeting

YANGON, 3 Oct- The Ministry of Information held the second four-monthly coordination meeting for year 2000 at the Head Office of Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise on Kokkine Yeiktha Road in Bahan Township this morning, attended by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung.

Head of Office Captain Soe Aung acted as master of ceremonies. At the meeting, Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung delivered an address. Myanma Radio and Television, Information and Public Relations Department, Printing and Publishing Enterprise, News and Periodicals Enterprise , Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise of officials reported on the work done in the second four-monthly period. Then, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein gave a supplementary report. After hearing the reports, Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung gave necessary instructions. Later, the minister gave the concluding remarks and the meeting came to a close.



(8) Caffeine proclaimed narcotic drug, precursor chemical

YANGON, 3 Oct - The Ministry of Health of the Union of Myanmar yesterday proclaimed caffeine a narcotic drug or a chemical used as a precursor in making psychotropic substances, in exercise of sub-section (b) of SectionÊ16 and sub-section (b) of Section 30 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. It was carried by Notification No-3/2000 issued yesterday.

Drug user gets 20 years

YANGON, 3 Oct-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Kengtung Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched the house of Juya, 46, of Ward 1, Sanpya Akhar Village in Kengtung, and arrested him together with 947.12 grams of raw opium on 12 June. The Kengtung Police Station filed him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Kengtung District Court handed down five years' imprisonment under Section 15 and twenty years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on him to serve concurrently on 28 August 2000.

Seminar on importance of disinfecting programme for livestock breeding held

YANGON, 3 Oct-The seminar on " The Importance of Disinfection Programme" jointly sponsored by Lighthouse Enterprise and Green Field International of Myanmar and Genpharma of Malaysia was held at Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein delivered a speech. He said that in Myanmar, all forms of commercial breeding and marketing of livestock and livestock products is owned, managed and operated by the private sector, while extension services are provided by the various Government organizations. During the last decade or so, all livestock population increased with various growth rates, poultry achieving the highest.

The Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries has set an objective to achieve drastic improvement in the livestock industry so as to increase animal population, increase meat , milk, and egg production for domestic consumption and share the surplus with other countries. This, in turn, would also upgrade the socio-economic status of livestock farmers.

In this seminar, we will exchange views and experiences on disinfection programmes, sanitation, preventative and curative medicines and animal health care. There are some of the measures which we should not ignore in our present society, and Myanmar needs to upgrade its present status. Then, Manager Mr Raymond Tan of Pahang Pharmacy Sdn Bhd (Malaysia) gave a detail explanation on the veterinary medicines manufactured by Genphama Sdn Bhd, the importance of disinfection programme and the use of sanitation medicines.

Kachin State wins championship shield of 5th ISD Under-17 Soccer Tournament

YANGON, 3 Oct- Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the final match of the 5th Inter-State/Division Under-17 Soccer Tournament and the prize presentation ceremony at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna at 3.30 PM today.

Also present at the match were Vice-Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Director of People's Militia and Frontier Forces Brig-Gen Than Maung, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, Deputy Director of Public Relations and Psychological Warfare Col Kyaw Myint, senior military officers, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik, officials and guests. In the final match, Kachin State beat Yangon Division 3-2.

After the match, the prize presentation ceremony was held. Director of SPED U Than Zaw presented joint-third prize to Mandalay Division and Shan State (East); Director U Maung Win of SPED presented the second prize to Yangon Division; Deputy Director-General Lt-Col Thein Aung presented best goalkeeper award to Maung MB Zaw Gun of Kachin State, best defender award to Maung Ye Win Naing of Kachin State, best mid-fielder award to Maung Wai Yan Maung of Yangon Division and best striker award to Maung Lwin Zaw Zaw Han of Kachin State. Then, Director-General U Thaung Htaik presented best player award to Maung Lwin Zaw Zaw Han of Kachin State, best fair play team award and championship shield to Kachin State.

President of UMFCCI meets Ambassador of Japan

YANGON, 3 Oct-President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint met Japanese Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Shigeru Tsumori at his office at 11 am today. They discussed matters concerning promotion of trade between the two countries, the visit to be paid to Japan by the delegation led by the President of UMFCCI and the third meeting of Japan Myanmar CCI Business Cooperation Committee to be held in Yangon on 3 November.

Ambassador U San Thein accredited to Austria

YANGON, 4 Oct-The Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar has appointed U San Thein, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Federal Republic of Germany, concurrently as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Republic of Austria.

Cambodian, Myanmar trainees studying natural forest management

YANGON, 3 Oct - A training course on natural forest management and timber production systems, the joint planned action of the Ministry of Forestry of Myanmar and the Ministry of Forestry and Fisheries of Cambodia, opened at the Forest Development Training Centre of the Forest Department in Hmawby yesterday.

The opening ceremony was attended by officials and advisers of the departments under the Ministry of Forestry, First Secretary Mr Chhay Songheng of the Embassy of Cambodia and guests. Director (Training and Research) U Oo Gar of the Forest Department delivered the opening speech. Advisers to the Ministry of Forestry of Myanmar and officials of the Forest Department and Myanma Timber Enterprise are giving lectures theoretically and practically at the 2-30 October training. The training plan for three trainees of the Forest Department of Cambodia and seven of the Forest Department and Myanma Timber Enterprise of Myanmar also includes the tour and study of natural forests, extraction camps, forest plantations, watershed areas, and the regions covered by the Project for Greening of the Dry Zone.

Myanmar delegation leaves for Thailand

YANGON, 3 Oct-A delegation led by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone left for Thailand to attend the third meeting of ASEAN Investment Area Council, which will be held in Changmai from 4 to 5 October, this afternoon. They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun and officials from Ministry of Commerce.

Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita title recipient Sayadaw of Watsiparavat Monastery in Bangkok honoured

YANGON, 3 Oct- A ceremony to honour Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kodan a of Watsiparavat Monastery in Bangkok, Thailand, Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita title recipient Sayadaw, presented by the Government of the Union of Myanmar was held in conjunction with the opening ceremony of the new hall for staff of the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok at the hall on 16 September.

Present on the occasion were Ambassador of the Union of Myanmar to Thailand U Hla Maung, embassy staff and Myanmar families. The congregation opened the ceremony by reciting Namo Tassa three times and received the Five Precepts from the Sayadaw. Ambassador U Hla Maung explained the purpose of holding the ceremony. Then, the brief biography of the Sayadaw was read. Afterwards, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kodan a gave an Ovadakatha. Ambassador U Hla Maung offered the certificate of honour to the Sayadaw. Next, well-wishers donated 100,000 bahts including 38,916 bahts by U Myo Win of Sun Far Co of Bangkok, 10,000 bahts by Ambassador U Hla Maung and wife Daw Thanda Khin family and 10,000 bahts by Mr Lee and family of Tiger Balm Co to the Sayadaw. Later, the congregation shared merits gained.

Trainees of Primary Teachership Course No 32 conclude on their  excursion tour

YANGON, 3 Oct- Trainees of Primary Teachership Course No 32 of University for Development of National Races led by Pro-Rector Daw Khin Si Si and supervisor teachers and officials left Industrial Training School (Sinde) of Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries at 5.30 am on 29 September.

They arrived at Pithano Ancient City in Taungdwingyi Township at 11.45 am. Incharge of Department of Archaeology in Taungdwingyi U Maung Maung Gyi explained the excavation of Pithano Ancient City to the trainees. The trainees visited the city. They proceeded to Magway in the evening and visited the Ayeyawady River Bridge (Magway) which is under construction by Public Works.

Then, they visited Myathalun Pagoda. A ceremony to welcome the trainees of Primary Teacher-ship Course No 32 of UDNR sponsored by Magway Division Peace and Development Council was held at Magway City Hall in the evening. Secretary of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Aung extended greetings. A trainee spoke words of thanks. The next day morning, they arrived at Bagan-NyaungU. Chairman of Magway District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Aye extended greetings on the platform of Shwezigon Pagoda.

Pro-Rector of the University Daw Khin Si Si and a trainee spoke words of thanks. Director of Department of Archaeology in Bagan U Kyaw Oo Lwin explained facts about the Bagan ancient pagodas. The trainees then visited the pagodas in Bagan and stopped over for the night in Poppa Taungkalat in the evening. On 1 October morning, they arrived Kyetmauk Diversion Dam in Kyaukpadaung Township.

Staff Officer U Tun Shwe explained facts about the dam. They then went to Kinta Diversion Dam and Kinta Hydro Electric Power Plant in Myittha Township in the evening. Assistant Director of Irrigation Department U Aye Ngwe explained the facts about the Kinta Diversion Dam, Deputy Division Engineer of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise U Sein Win on distribution of electric power in upper Myanmar and Factory Manager of Kinta Hydro Electric Power Plant U Ye Myint Htay on facts about the plant. A trainee thanked the officials and they visited the plant. They arrived back the University in the evening.

Work for increase in breeding, production of poultry, prawn discussed

YANGON, 3 Oct-The tenth work coordination meeting of the Committee for Increasing Breeding and Production of Prawn and Poultry was held at the meeting hall of Fisheries Department on Hsinmin Street in Alone Township, this afternoon. Chairman of the Committee Minister at Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and Vice-Chairman of the Committee Minister for Livestock and Fisheries attended the meeting and gave instructions on extending breeding and production of poultry and prawn. The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by Committee Chairman Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe.

358 jewellery merchants arrive

YANGON, 3 Oct- The Year 2000 Mid-Year Myanmar Gems Emporium continued at the Myanma Gems Mart on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road today. A total of 358 jewellery merchants Ñ 185 of 82 companies from seven foreign countries and 173 of 70 local companies' have arrived here recently. They inspected jade, gems and jewellery displayed at the emporium from 9 am to 5 PM today. Secretary of the Central Committee for Holding Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium Managing Director U Khin Oo of Myanma Gems Enterprise, secretaries of jade, gems and pearl sub-committees welcomed the merchants and conducted them round the emporium. More merchants will arrive here tomorrow and they will inspect the jade, gems and jewellery and pearl at the Mid-Year Myanmar Gems Emporium.


(10) 30 members resign from KhinU Township NLD of own accord

YANGON, 3 Oct- Thirty members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of KhinU Township, Sagaing Division. Thirty members of KhinU Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to KhinU Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 19 January 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
