(1) Commander-in-Chief (Army) receives Military Attaches

Commander-in-Chief (Army) receives ROK Military Attaches

  YANGON, 28 Sept-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye received Military Attaché of the Republic of Korea to Myanmar Col Lee Nae Chan, who had completed his tour of duty in Myanmar, and his successor Col Yoon Han-Hong at Dagon Yeiktha of Ministry of Defence at 8.30 am today.

  Also present were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies Director of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min and Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than.

Commander-in-Chief (Army) receives Indonesian Military Attaches

  YANGON, 28 Sept-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye received Military Attaché of Indonesia to Myanmar Col Hary Bambang Poernomo, who had completed his tour of duty in Myanmar, and his successor Col Amiruddin Usman at Dagon Yeiktha of Ministry of Defence at 8.50 am today.

Also present were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies Director of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min and Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than.


(2) Minister previews Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium

YANGON, 28 Sept-Patron of the Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, accompanied by Chairman of the Central Committee Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, inspected preview of Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium at Myanma Gems Mart on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 5 PM today.

The minister and party inspected gems lots, jewellery, and jade figurines and jade carvings to be sold at fixed prices on the ground floor, raw jade stones of imperial, commercial, samar and other qualities in the compound of the mart, gem lots and pearl lots on the third floor. The minister gave instructions to officials. Then, the Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee held its second meeting at Myanma Gems Emporium. Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint delivered a speech.

Secretary of Central Committee Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo explained the sale of gems at the previous gems emporiums and the sales programmes for the coming Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium.

Various subcommittees presented their accomplishments sector-wise and the replies received from the invited gems merchants.  The minister and the central committee members took part in the discussions and looked into the requirements.

Mid-Year Gems Emporium to be held 3 Oct

YANGON, 28 Sept - The Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium organized by Myanma Gems Enterprise under the supervision of the Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee of the Ministry of Mines will be held beginning 3 October.

At the emporium, lots of jade and gems of good quality will be put on sale and nearly 400 foreign gem merchants are expected to attend the emporium. National gems entrepreneurs are allowed to attend the emporium with the aim of enabling them to conduct gems sale at the emporium in accord with the market-oriented system, to study the condition of the gem markets abroad, to meet with foreign gems merchants and coordinate gems sale, to get raw gems in order to produce finished gems and to raise proceeds from the sale of gems through competitive bidding.


(3) Minister attends work coordination meeting between DAD and state/division development affairs committees

YANGON, 28 Sept-Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt attended the work coordination meeting between Development Affairs Department and state/division development affairs committees held at the meeting hall of DAD, at No 245, Thanlyetsun Street, Botahtaung Township at 7 am today.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Ministers U Kyaw Tin and Brig-Gen Than Tun, officials and deputy superintending engineers.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Col Thein Nyunt said that the meetings are being held to enable directors and superintending engineers who are taking responsibilities of development undertakings to speedily implement their tasks assigned to them by the Ministry; and priority is to be given to the development of rural areas as the urban areas are gaining a progress to a certain degree; paving of roads is the basic requirement for rural development, leading to improvement of economic, social and education standards of the villages. Building of roads between villages and villages and towns is the basic task in developing the rural areas. from this stage, roads linking states and divisions should be extended; and rural roads and bridges are must be built in accord with five-year plan.

Deputy Minister U Kyaw Tin gave instructions on building of model villages, cleaning and greening of environment, growing of vegetables and engineering work.

Director-General Col Myo Myint discussed the work carried out during the first four-monthly period and the directors of state/division development affairs committees reported on the accomplishments during the first four-monthly period. The meeting continues tomorrow.

Yangon Division Eighth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions (Higher Education Level) opened

YANGON,28 Sept-The opening ceremony of the Eighth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions (Higher Education Level) Yangon Division was held at Kumudra Hall of the University of Culture in Dagon Myothit (South) this morning.

Present were Chairman of the Organizing Committee for Higher Education Level Competitions Rector of Dagon University Dr Maung Thinn, Vice-Chairman Rector of the University of Culture (Yangon) U Tin Soe, officials, judges, competitors and guests.

Exhibition on Teaching Skill Promotion with IT opens

YANGON, 28 Sept- The opening ceremony of Exhibition on Teaching Skill Promotion with IT was held at the Institute of Education (Yangon) this morning. This exhibition is part of the activities of installing multimedia resource centre at institutes, degree colleges and colleges, which are contributing to teaching and research work with the use of IT, and the exhibition is also aimed to extend these activities so as to disseminate knowledge about training and work programmes as well as modern technologies.

Present were Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Ministers for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung , officials and guests. Before the ceremony, students of Education Practising School of the Institute of Education presented an entertainment programme.

Then, tenth standard students Maung Lu Aye Oo, Maung Sai Win Myint Oo and Maung Phyo Wai Aung presented 3D Animation with the use of 3D Studio Max Software. Rector of the Institute of Education (Yangon) U Han Tin formally opened the exhibition. Minister for Education U Than Aung and party viewed the IT booths of Queen Star Co Ltd, CMC and Winner Computer Group, booths of Myanmar Education Research Bureau, Pyinnyatazaung, book stores of Wisdom Book Club, Thuta Co and the Institute of Education (Yangon), the booth named Education in Myanmar, the teaching aid room, the art and sculpture room, the photo room, the laboratory room, the display of arts, multimedia resource centre and entertainment programmes of students. The exhibition continues up to 30 September from 9 am to 4 PM daily.

Sewing and cookery courses of MMCWA conclude

YANGON, 28 Sept-A ceremony to conclude Sewing Course No 12/2000 and Cookery Course 11/2000, in conjunction with the opening ceremony of Sewing Course No 13/2000 and Cookery Course 12/2000, was held at Multi-purpose Hall of the Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, at the corner of Parami Road and Thanthuma Road, South Okkalapa Township, this morning.

It was attended by Vice-Chairperson of MMWCA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and CEC members, honorary patrons, course instructors and trainees. First, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe delivered a speech. Then, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Patrons of Course Supervisory Committee Daw Yin Yin and Daw Khin Myint Myint presented certificates to 44 trainees. Anyone may apply to take sewing and cookery courses which are conducted bimonthly.

UMFCCI Executives leave for Thailand

YANGON, 28 Sept-Executives of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Aung Lwin, Dr Pwint Hsan, U San Tun Hla, U Hla Myint and U Kyaw Thein left here for Thailand by air this evening to attend Seminar on Golden Opportunities of the Subregion to be held in Changmai from 28 September to 1 October. They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by President of UMFCCI U Win Myint and officials.

Third Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour 2000-2001 begins in Lashio

YANGON, 28 Sept- A ceremony to open the Third Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour 2000-2001, organized by Myanmar Golf Federation and Myanmar Professional Golfers' Association and mainly sponsored by Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd, was held at Lashio Golf Club in Lashio, Shan State (North), this morning. Present on the occasion were Deputy Commander of North-East Command Brig-Gen San Thein, executives of Myanmar Golf Federation, Deputy Managing Director Major Paw Khant and officials of Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd, senior military officers, guests and spectators. First, all golfers took designated positions at 10th Tee.

Then, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen San Thein, executive of MGF and Myanmar PGA U Ko Ko Lay and Corporate Affairs Manager U Myint Thein of Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd teed off as the opening of the first round of the tour. After the first round of the professional division, Myint Shwe who had never secured the champion led the tour in the first position with 69 strokes. Runner-up were second leg champion Aung Win in the second position with 72 and Maung Pyone, first leg champion Soe Kyaw Naing and Myint Thaung shared the third place with 73 each.

In the Amateur Division, second leg champion Min Naing and Zaw Zaw Latt tied in the first position with 72 strokes, followed by Thein Han and Yin Aung Latt tied in the second position with 73 each and Nay Lin Tun in the third position with 74. Tiger Beer, Yangon Airways, Canon, Star Cola (MGS Beverages) and Wilson also sponsor the tour with the aims of turning out golfers all over the country and raising the Myanma golf standard. The tour is being organized by Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd. The second round of the tour continues tomorrow.

Mandalay, Yangon enter semi-final

YANGON, 28 Sept- Quarterfinal matches of the 5th Inter-State/Division Under-17 Soccer Tournament began this evening. At Thanlyin Township Sports Ground, Mandalay Division beat Shan State (South) 2-0. Similarly, Yangon Division beat Bago Division 2-0 at Salin Sports Ground. Mandalay Division and Yangon Division entered the semi-final.



(6) 52 armed group members exchange arms for peace in August

YANGON, 28 Sept- The State Peace and Development Council, upholding Our Three Main National Causes, is implementing national reconsolidation work with might and main, for emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation. Remnant armed groups, realizing that their destructive acts did not benefit the nation and the people and that it retarded development of their regions, and understanding the genuine goodwill and correct endeavours of the government, have been exchanging arms for peace individually or in groups.

Cpl Ba Ngwe and Pvt Kyaw Thet Oo of No 1 Brigade of KNU armed group, bringing together with one AK-47 automatic rifle, one M-79 launcher, one magazine, 15 rounds of ammunition and one walkie-talkie and Pvts Moe Kale, Saw Hti Mu and Saw Tha Gae of No 6 Brigade in South-East Command region; educational employee Ma Khin Mar Aye of ABSDF armed group in Northern Command region; Pvt Mong La (a) Kissanai of ABSDF armed group in North-East Command region; Pvt Toe Laung of SURA armed group in Eastern Command region; Pvt Lyan Hso of CNA armed group in North-West Command region; Pvt Saw Thu Khe together with one AK-47 automatic rifle,  one magazine and two rounds of ammunition; cadres Saw Lwi Lo, Saw Me Me and Cor Fi Mitt, Pvt Lu Pu (a) Kyaw Than and wife Ma San San Nwe and mother Daw Khin Thein Yin, with one AK-47 automatic rifle, one magazine and two rounds of ammunition, cadre Saw Pho Kyaw, wife Naw Pary, son Saw Lah Kyaung, daughter Ma Naw Mari Kam, father-in-law Saw Lay with one long barrel shotgun and two rounds of ammunition, cadre Saw Kalay with one gun, Pvt Soe Oo (a) Mar Law with one grenade, Sgt Ta Nu, Pvt Lo De and cadre Saw Phee with one M-16, one AK-47, one magazine and 20 rounds of ammunition, Sgt Tun Yi's wife Mei Gae Thi, daughter Naw Mu Naw, sons Pho Hlu and Bar Palet, younger sisters Ma Ni and Nay Mu Dah, nephew Win Yi, cadre Chi Po's wife Naw Mei Chu, sons Hla Oo, Saw Kalay, Saw Shi Mo and Saw Hsa Dah, daughters Naw Thamee and Naw Kaphoo with one M-16, one AK-47, two magazines and 12 rounds of ammunitions; Saw Taw Ni's wife Naw Chit Chit and mother-in-law Daw Pu, Saw Pha Kauk's wife Daw Thu; cadres Shu Kay, Maik Tawt, Ohn Maung and Kin Hnoke with one AK-47, one .22 revolver, one magazine, 27 rounds of ammunition and one grenade of No 11 Battalion of KNU armed group, cadre U Kyu Toe of DO No 7 Battalion; cadre Moe Pyan of No 4 Brigade with one M-16 and two magazines; Pvts Saw Hsa Hsaik, Saw Hsa Phwee and Saw Naing Htoo with two M-16s, one M-22, three magazines and 35 rounds of ammunition of Coastal Region Command region exchanged arms for peace at the respective military camps from 1 to 31 August. Officials of the respective military camps warmly welcomed 52 persons who exchanged arms for peace and attended to their requirements. More persons of remnant armed groups are going to exchange arms for peace.


(7) 130 stimulant tablets seized

YANGON, 28 Sept-A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and Myan-mar Police Force, acting on information, waiting at the corner of Kaba Aye Pagoda Road and Kanyeiktha Road, Mayangon Township, arrested Thein Htaik Soe (a) Nyi Nge Lay, son of U Tin Soe, of Baho Street, Ward 47, Ahneiktaw Village-tract, Aungmyay Thazan Township, Mandalay, who came to traffick narcotic drugs, together with 130 stimulant tablets bearing the words "WY" on 17 September this year. Action was taken against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.



(8) 18 Hnarein Village-tract NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 28 Sept-Eighteen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Hnarein Village-tract, Htantalan Township, Chin State. Eighteen members of Hnarein Village-tract NLD, Thantlan Township, Chin State, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Thantlan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 3 August 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
