(1)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends message of sympathy to Cambodia

YANGON, 22 Sept-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar has sent a message of sympathy to His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk, King of Cambodia on the loss of lives and property as a result of recent devastating floods in Cambodia caused by heavy torrential rains.


(2) Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe accepts credentials of Ambassador of Sweden

YANGON, 22 Sept- Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe accepted credentials of newly-accredited Ambassador of Sweden Mr Jan Axel Nordlander at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 10 am today.  Also present on the occasion were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.


(3) Secretary-1 inspects construction of Gandhakuti Kyaungdawgyi on Mindhamma Hill

YANGON, 22 Sept- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt this evening arrived at Mindhamma Hill where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image takes residence. The Secretary-1 was welcomed by Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Nyi Hla Nge and officials. Deputy Minister U Nyi Hla Nge and engineers of Public Works reported to the Secretary-1 on arrangements for construction of Gandhakuti Kyaungdawgyi in accord with Myanmar architectural design. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt then inspected arrangements being made for construction of Gandhakuti Kyaungdawgyi and carving of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image by sculptors U Taw Taw and sons. The Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions to them and left the hill.

Mindhamma Hill packed with monks and people

YANGON, 22 Sept - Mindhamma Hill on Mindhamma Road in Insein Township was packed today with members of the Sangha and Buddhist devotees who came to pay homage to the Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image. Employees of the Public Works are undertaking construction of Gandhakuti Kyaungtawgyi for the Image. Stone sculptors U Taw Taw and sons continue carving the Image. Wut associations are also reciting religious verses. Well-wishers make donations to the fund of the Image. From 5 August to date, over K 58,160,400 have been received, and the donation centre is kept open on Mindhamma Hill from 7 am to 9 PM daily.


(4) Deputy Prime Minister receives Ambassador of Nepal

YANGON, 22 Sept- On behalf of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Ambassador of Nepal General Satchit Shumshere JB Rana (Retd), who had completed his tour of duty, at the Guest House of the Ministry of Defence at 4 PM today. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.

Minister for Hotels and Tourism meets foreign visitor.

YANGON, 22 Sept-Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Managing Director Mr Norbert Witthinrich of Genesis Liveaboards Co Ltd of Thailand at his office this morning. Also present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, the Director-General, the Managing Director and officials of the ministry.

Minister meets Ambassador of Pakistan

YANGON, 22 Sept-Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung met Ambassador of Pakistan to Myanmar Mr Mian Yousuf Shah at the guest hall of Myanma Radio and Television on Pyay Road at 2 PM today. Also present at the call were Director-General U Khin Maung Htay of MRTV, Managing Director U Tin Kha of the News and Periodicals Enterprise, Managing Director Col Myint Thein of the Printing and Publishing Enterprise, Managing Director U Bo Kyi of the Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise, Adviser to Minister for Information U Kyaw Min and Head of Office Capt Soe Aung.

Minister visits Institute of Marine Technology

YANGON, 22 Sept - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and officials, visited the Institute of Marine Technology on Bayintnaung Road in Kamayut Township this morning. The minister inspected construction of lecture halls, hostels and the canteen and the greening work, and gave instructions on teaching matters. Then, the minister, the deputy minister and party went to No 1 Ahlon Wharf Extension Project jointly undertaken by Myanma Port Authority and Asia World Port Management Co Ltd. Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority U Thein Htay and Managing Director of Asia World Port Management Co Ltd U Tun Myint Naing reported on the project. The minister gave instructions on the implementation of the project in accord with the set standard and worksite safety. Afterwards, the minister, the deputy minister and party inspected the freight handling work at No 2 Ahlon Wharf and progress in construction of the container yard at No 1 Ahlon Wharf.

Hospital Management Diploma Course No 3 concludes

YANGON, 22 Sept - Hospital Management Diploma Course No 3 of the Department of Medical Sciences concluded at the meeting hall of the department this morning. Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein made a speech.  Also present were the directors-general, deputy directors-general, rectors, directors, deputy directors, medical superintendents and officials of departments under the ministry and trainees.

The minister said that the purpose of opening the hospital management diploma course is to raise the standard of hospitals which are providing health care for the people and to make the best use of qualified forces in providing health care. As is known to all, political, economic and social objectives have been laid down and implemented with momentum for the emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation. In accord with one of social objectives calling for the uplift of health, fitness and education standard of the national people and the health policy of the State, the Ministry of Health has drawn and implemented national health plans systematically.

In the world today, the cost of medical treatment is rising due to an increase in the prices of medical equipment and medicines. Well-wishers are making donations in cash and kind to hospitals under the Ministry of Health, and till the end of May 2000, trust funds had been set up at 244 hospitals. At the hospitals, free treatment is given to the poor and needy, and for those who can afford the cost of medical treatment, the cost-sharing health care system is practised. It is necessary to beneficially use trust funds to give free treatment to the poor and needy. Officials of the ministry are required to regard the hospital work as their own work in response to the goodwill of the well wishers and carry out staff welfare programmes. In conclusion, the minister urged all to make the best use of what they has learnt at the course when they resume their duties. Then, the minister presented certificates to the doctor trainees.

Myanmar to host ASEAN Railway General Managers’ Conference from 17 to 19 Oct

Yangon, 22 Sept- A meeting was held to coordinate hosting of the 22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers’ Conference in Myanmar at the Ministry of Rail Transportation this morning.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung pointed out Myanmar became a member of ASEAN Railways Association at the 20th ASEAN Railway General Managers’ Conference which was held in Hanoi, Vietnam, in August 1998. Laos also became a member of the association at that meeting. Cambodia became a member of the association at the 21st conference held in Bali, Indonesia, in June 1999. Of the ten ASEAN nations, eight nations except Singapore and Brunei are members of the association.  The 21st conference approved to hold the 22nd conference in Myanmar. Thus the 22nd conference will be organized at Traders Hotel in Yangon from 17 to 19 October.

Successful hosting of the conference will enable Myanmar to show her fine traditions such as hospitality, amity and culture.  The nation can also show its beautiful, pleasant, peaceful, tranquil and secure conditions. Officials of Myanma Railways should give priority to the efforts for efficiency, exchange of technology and spare parts and extending of friendly relations and cooperation among ASEAN nations. The respective subcommittees should present frank views at the meeting. Also present at the meeting were Deputy Ministers for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin  officials and members of the respective subcommittees.

Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin presented requirements for hosting the conference. Chairman of ASEAN Section of the ministry Director-General of Transport Planning Department U Kyaw Hsan and Managing Director of MR Col Min Swe reported to the meeting on preparations being made to host the conference. The respective subcommittees then presented progress of work so far carried out. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister.

Deputy Minister inspects hotels in Pyay, Thandwe

YANGON, 22 Sept- Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, accompanied by officials, arrived at Ngapali Beach in Thandwe District to inspect arrangements for promotion of hotels, motels and inn on 18 September.  The next day, Director of Lonemalay Co Ltd Daw Khin Htay and officials reported to the deputy minister on renovation and construction of buildings and buildings to be constructed with the aid of charts. The deputy minister and party inspected Sandoway hotel, Bay view Beach hotel and LinthaU guest house and gave instructions to officials.
Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and party inspected Beverage Enterprise of the ministry in Thandwe on 20 September. The deputy minister met staff and looked into the requirements. Then, the deputy minister inspected reconstruction of buildings at Mingala Garden Hotel in Pyay. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and party inspected Thiri Maha hotel, Yoma Royal hotel and Pyay hotel in Pyay on 21 September. The deputy minister also inspected beverage industry and warehouse and gave instructions.


(7) Greater number, higher quality jade, gems at Mid-Year Gems Emporium on 3 October

YANGON, 22 Sept - Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint Thein, arrived at Myanma Gems Emporium Hall this morning. The minister inspected preparations for the emporium and display of jade lots and gems mined from Mongshu to be put on sale, and gave instructions. The Mid-Year Gems Emporium for the year 2000 due on 3 October will put on sale a greater number and higher quality of jade and gems. Jade lots will include those mined from the Hte Lone Sein Mine, Hmaw Kyan Hmaw Mine and Sama Mine, which are the source of high quality jade stones. Commercial jade and imperial jade as well as precious gems mined from Mongshu will also be on sale. Invitations have been sent to foreign gem merchants to visit the Mid-Year Gem Emporium. Those who do not receive the invitations may do so by contacting the Myanmar Embassies and Consulates concerned.


(8)  Minister attends BSI second four-monthly work coordination
meeting

YANGON, 22 Sept-The second four-monthly work coordination meeting for the year 2000 of the Bureau of Special Investigation was held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Home Affairs this morning with an address by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing. Speaking on the occasion, the minister said BSI should strive to implement the 12 political, economic and social objectives laid down by the State. Preventive measures should be taken in striving to ensure national peace and stability. The minister also urge officials concerned to conduct speedy and correct investigation and expose corrupts service personnel and unscrupulous businessmen and to take action against them.  The Deputy Minister also spoke at the meeting.


(9) Woman jailed for trafficking stimulant tablets

YANGON, 22 Sept-The Mandalay District Court sentenced a woman to 14-years imprisonment for trafficking stimulant tablets, on 30 August 2000. A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and members of Pyigyidagon Township Police Station, acting on information, searched Ma Aye Shwe who was putting up at Room No 1 of Man Shwe Myodaw Lodging House on 31st Street (between 80th Street and 81st Street) in Mandalay and arrested her together with 3,949 stimulant tablets on 9 March 2000. The Mandalay Police Station No 8 filed Ma Aye Shwe, 45, daughter of U Yan Kwe Hsai, of Hmawthitgon Ward in Phakant in accordance with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Mandalay District Court then sentenced her to 14 years imprisonment under Section 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(10) Over 56,169 eligible voters of Paukkhaung Township unanimously  petition for dissolving NLD

YANGON, 22 Sept-Voters from Paukkhaung Township in Bago Division, unanimously expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolving it at the sports ground in Paukkhaung Township on 30 August morning. Over 23,000 local people from five wards and 52 village tracts rallied at the sports ground in Paukkhaung Township on 30 August. On behalf of the local people, farmer U Tun Tin from Ngakhuai Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Farmer U Saw Hmu from west Gyogon Village, on behalf of local people, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Judge Daw Khin Khin Hla. The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogans Our Three Main National Causes.

There are 57,837 eligible voters in Paukkhaung Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolving it, was 56,169 voters or 97.11 per cent.


(11) 20 Yamethin Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 22 Sept-Twenty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Yamethin Township, Mandalay Division. Twenty members of Yamethin Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Yamethin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 16 January 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
