(1) Yankin BEHS 2 gets new building, multimedia teaching centre

YANGON, 19 Sept - A ceremony to hand over a new building and to open a multimedia teaching centre at the Basic Education High School No 2 in Yankin Township was held this morning at the school, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were the ministers, the deputy ministers, the deputy director-general of No 3 Basic Education Department, officials, the township education officer, school heads, members of school board of trustees and parent-teacher association, Headmistress Daw Khin Khin Oo, teachers and students.

Headmistress Daw Khin Khin Oo and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Ba Han formally opened the centre by cutting a ribbon. Secretary-1 unveiled the signboard marking the opening of the centre. After inspecting the computer application media, study room, audio visual lab, computer aided instruction, prayer hall, art room and music room, the Secretary-1 and party observed the demonstration of the all-round education skills of the students.

Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-1 said due to the active participation of the people, parents and well-wishers, greater success has been achieved in implementing the State’s education promotion programmes.

The Secretary-1, on behalf of the State, thanked the parents, members of the school boards of trustees and well-wishers for their active participation in enabling students to acquire international level education, promoting the all-round education and producing intellectuals and intelligentsia for the nation. He then posed for a photo together with the members of the school board of trustees and parent-teacher associations, school heads, teachers and students. Headmistress Daw Khin Khin Oo thanked the parents, teachers, members of the school board of trustees and well-wishers for their assistance in opening of the multimedia teaching centres and the K 19.2-million worth three-storey building.

She said she and the staff would try their best for education promotion of all the national people. Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Ba Han explained efforts made for construction of the building and opening of the centre. Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung accepted the donations. Daw Khin Khin Oo presented the related documents of the building to Deputy Director-General of No 3 Basic Education Department U Tin Win.


(2) Setting up of Barlar Farming Zone in Yangon Division gaining momentum

YANGON, 19 Sept - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected farming at Barlar Zone, Hlegu Township, Yangon Division, this evening.

Secretary-2 went to the Control Office of the farm which is being undertaken by the No 11 Light Infantry Division. The farm is located on the No 3 Highway in the township.

Yangon Division Director of Irrigation Department U Tin Maung Win reported to the Secretary-2 on land reclamation along the Barlar Creek and the surrounding areas in the township, joined in by Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint. Col Khin Maung Than said the LID has been permitted to cultivate 376 acres at the zone; it has put 200 acres under crops this season; efforts are being made to build drainage and feeder canals and bridges. Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu explained condition of fish farming in the zone.

After attending to their needs, the Secretary-2 said agricultural and livestock breeding areas such as Uto, Kya-in and Nyaunghnapin zones have been set up in Yangon in order to distribute basic foodstuff to the city dwellers at fair prices.

The Secretary-2 inspected the thriving paddy fields, building of embankment and digging of canals with the use of heavy equipment.  The Secretary-2 and party then inspected the fish breeding ponds.


(3) Appointment of Ambassador of Netherlands agreed on

YANGON, 20 Sept- The Government of the Union of Myanmar has agreed to the appointment of HE Mr Gerard Johan Hendrik Christiaan Kramer as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Union of Myanmar in succession to Her Excellency Ms Maria Laetitia Alice Crispiniana van den Assum.


(4)Ambassador U Wunna Maung Lwin presents credentials to Israeli President

YANGON, 20 Sept- U Wunna Maung Lwin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the State of Israel, presented his credentials to His Excellency Mr Moshav Katsav, President of the State of Israel on 12 September 2000, in Jerusalem.

Minister meets member of House of Representatives of Japan

YANGON, 19 Sept- Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin met member of House of Representatives of Japan Mr Seiken Sugiura at his office this morning. They discussed bilateral cooperation in promotion of agricultural technology between Myanmar and Japan. Also present at the call were heads of department and officials of the ministry.

YANGON, 19 Sept-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay received Ambassador of Israel Mr Baruch Ram at his office at 11 am today. Also present on the occasion were Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary Col Myint Aung, Joint-Secretary U Kyi Win and members, heads of department, deputy heads of department and Adviser to the Mayor U Kyaw Shein.

YANGON, 19 Sept-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met Ambassador of Pakistan to Myanmar Mr Mian Yusuf Shah at his office at 1 PM today. Also present at the call were Director-General of Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye, Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Min Hla Aung, Deputy Director-General of Border Trade Department U Thein Lwin and officials.

YANGON, 19 Sept-Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt met Managing Director Mr Kazuhisa Matsuoka of Department-1 for South-East Asia and Indo-China Region of Japan International Co-operation Agency at his office at 2 PM today. Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun, Director-General of Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races Col Than Swe and officials.

Industry-1 Minister meets PRC guests

YANGON, 19 Sept - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met a 13-member study delegation of the people’s Republic of China led by Vice-Governor Mr Liu Yiping of Hong He Nani and Yi Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, PRC, at his office this morning. Also present at the call were directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry and officials.


(6) Myanmar delegation attends 21st General Assembly of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization in Singapore

YANGON, 19 Sept-A Myanmar delegation led by Chief Justice U Aung Toe left here for Singapore to attend the 21st General Assembly of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization held there from 10 to 14 September.

The delegation comprised member of Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission U Aye Maung and Joint-Secretary of National Convention Convening Work Committee U Thaung Nyunt. Executive Committee comprising leaders of delegations from member countries and leaders of special study groups from Myanmar and Brunei Darussalam held its meeting at Shangrila Hotel in Singapore at 8 PM on 10 September.

The meeting passed the agenda of the General Assembly and matters to be discussed. Leaders from member countries and permanent special study groups and leaders of study groups met Chairman of ASEAN Parliamentary Organization Mr Tan Soo Khoon at Casuarina Room of Shangrila Hotel at 9 am on 11 September.

At 9.45 am on that day, opening ceremony of the 21st General Assembly of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization at Island A Ballroom of Shangri-la Hotel. Chairman of General Assembly Mr Tan Soo Khoon delivered an opening address. Acting Prime Minister of Singapore Brig-Gen Hsien Loong also made a speech.

At 10.30 am, the 21st General Assembly of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization was held at Island B Ballroom. The messages sent by the Heads of State to the 21st General Assembly of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization were distributed to delegates. Leader of Myanmar delegation U Aung Toe said the government is implementing the tasks of non-disintegration of the Union, non-disintegration of national solidarity and perpetuation of sovereignty after reviewing the experiences passed in the course of history. These are the duties of all citizens. He said the government is determined to practise discipline-flouring democracy in the country in accord with the desire of the people and preparations are under way.

He said the National Convention Convening Commission is drafting the basic principles and detailed facts for emergence of an enduring State constitution. On the other hand, the government has been building infrastructure needed for a new nation, he said. These endeavours will be beneficial not only for Myanmar but also for security, peace, perpetuation and development of South East Asia region as a whole, he added. He said the entire people including 17 armed groups that returned to the legal fold for the first time in Myanmar history after regaining independence support nation-building tasks.

He said concerted efforts are being made for emergence of a peaceful, stable and strong nation and these efforts will contribute peace and tranquillity and perpetuation in the entire South East Asian region. Delegates from member countries of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization, permanent special study groups and study groups and delegates from dialogue partner countries. The General Assembly concluded successfully on 14 September. The Myanmar delegation arrived back here on 15 September.


(7) Executive Vice-President of (ANA) arrives on opening day of Mandalay International Airport

YANGON, 19 Sept-Executive Vice-President of All Nippon Airways Co Ltd (ANA) Mr Kazuhisa Shin and members arrived at Mandalay International Airport by Boeing 747 in the evening of 17 September, the opening day of Mandalay International Airport.

They were welcomed at the airport by Director-General of Department of Civil Aviation U Win Maung, General Manager of Mandalay International Airport Lt-Col Tun Hlaing and officials.

Then, Executive Vice-President of All Nippon Airways Co Ltd (ANA) Mr Kazuhisa Shin and party called on Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and Director-General of Department of Civil Aviation U Win Maung at the guest room at the airport.

They discussed civil aviation matters between the two countries. Then, they exchanged gifts to mark the opening ceremony of the airport. Afterwards, they inspected Mandalay International Airport. Mr Kazuhisa Shin and party left there in the evening. They were seen off at the airport by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and officials.


(8) Chief Justice presents prizes to outstanding trainees

YANGON, 19 Sept- A ceremony to present prizes to outstanding trainees of On-job Training Course No 12 for Judicial Officers and Basic Civil Service Course No 152 was held at the hall of Supreme Court this morning. Present were Chief Justice U Aung Toe, Deputy Chief Justice U Than Oo, Supreme Court Justices, officials and 48 trainees. Chief Justice U Aung Toe and Deputy Chief Justice U Than Oo presented prizes to outstanding trainees. Then, Supreme Court Justices presented certificates and assigned duty to trainees of the Judicial On-job Training Course.


(9) MNWCWA holds meeting No 3/2000

YANGON, 19 Sept- Myanmar National Working Committee for Women’s Affairs held the meeting No 3/2000 at Bogyoke Aung San Hall of Social Welfare Department on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this afternoon.

Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented certificates and gifts to the well-wishers by MNWCWA. Adviser to Education Group Daw Khin Than Nwe presented cash towards the staff welfare programme. On behalf of the wellwishers, Deputy Director (Retd) U Thaung Shwe of SWD spoke words of thanks.

Then, MNWCWA held the meeting No 3/2000. Vice-Chairperson Professor Daw May May Yi gave an opening speech. On behalf of the Secretary, Director of SWD U Khin Aung reported on work done. Afterwards, heads of Working Groups for Education Affairs, Health Affairs, Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation, Economic Affairs, Cultural Affairs, Girls and Adult Affairs, Environmental Conservation and Information and Communications presented reports on their respective sectors. Those present took part in the discussions. Later, Vice-Chairperson Professor Daw May May Yi gave the concluding remarks.


(10) Extended Prawn Breeding Committee meets prawn breeders of Kyauktan Zone

YANGON, 19 Sept-Extended Prawn Breeding Committee met prawn breeders of Kyauktan Zone at Fisheries Department in Ahlon Township this afternoon, with an address by Chairman of Extended Prawn Breeding Committee Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe.

Vice-Chairman of Extended Prawn Breeding Committee Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and Secretary Deputy Minister U Aung Thein took part in the discussions.

The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by Minister Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe. The ninth meeting of Fowl-Prawn Breeding and Production Committee was also held at the meeting hall of the same department.

Chairman of Fowl-Prawn Breeding and Production Committee Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and Vice-Chairman Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein spoke on the occasion.

Taninthayi Division Fowl-Prawn Breeding and Production region in-charge Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Yangon Division Fowl-Prawn Breeding and Production region in-charge Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, members of State and Division Fowl-Prawn Breeding and Production Sub-committees and departments concerned reported on work done and future tasks. The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by Minister Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe.


(11) Drug possessor jailed for 15 years

YANGON, 19 Sept-A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and Kyonpyaw Township MPF, acting on information, searched the house of Zaw Min Lwin (a) Tayokkyi on Strand Road, Kyonpyaw, on 13 December 1999 and seized 143 grams of marijuana. Zaw Min Lwin (a) Tayokkyi, 29, son of U Win Maung, was filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Kyonpyaw Police Station. He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment under Section 19 (A) and 5 years’ imprisonment under Section 15 to serve separately by Pathein District Court on 24 August 2000.


(12) 13 Maukme Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 19 Sept-Thirteen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Maukme Township, Shan State. Thirteen members of Maukme Township NLD, Shan State, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Maukme Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 6 August 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
